[Q] Does 1GB and 2GB RAM really matters? - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am planning to buy Note2 or SG3 but m lil bit confused btween these two awesome devices..the only pro i see in note 2 is larger screen,s-pen and 1GB additional RAM compared to SG3.Whereas SG3 has lot more functions and features than note 2.
So i need help from u guys that which phone is better among the two..
Also does 2GB of RAM really matters for a PHONE??I mean its a phone not a PC..what do u guys think?

It does. That's why I sold away my s3 before its value depreciates too much.
It's pretty frustrating when your app closes whenever you open a few more apps.

Believe me go for the note from 2 it has a lot of more features. I had the s3 for a month and it is nothing special compared to the note 2.

No competition. Note 2 or nothing!
Haha. But S3 is good as well.
An extra gig of RAM could go a long way.

Is S3 anyway better than note 2 ? S3 has better pixel density(306 ppi) compared to note 2(~267ppi).. Has anyone noticed any difference in display and clarity?

With the screen calibration of Perseus and other kernels' you don't need to stress about pixels per inch.

Means,i need not to worry about the screen clarity and display as S3 has..does it has any noticeable change in screen when both are seen side by side?

Perseus both on S3 and Note 2, there will be more clarity on the S3 of course because of more PPI.
But with screen calibration, it could possibly beat a retina Apple display.

in my opinion the S3 is not as clear.
this is because the S3 has a pentile screen(2 colors per pixel instead of the regular 3), so while it has a slightly higher ppi it has a lower sppi and a noticeable pattern in the screen that looks a bit like a chain link fence.
and I don't know what you've heard about the features on the S3, but as far as I know the note 2 has all features the S3 has and some exclusive features.

It would be safe to say that with additional ram on the note 2, it's future proofed against newer Rom updates. 2GB is becoming the trend and will be required as more and more features are being added to roms. Since you mentioned the S3 has more features, I am curious to know what extra features does the S3 have over the Note 2?

It is the Note 2 which has the greater range of features, not the other way around.

After reading above comments and user reviews,my reaction towards S3 is-How the fu**in hell i was wondering to buy S3 ..fu*k u S3.

The international LTE version of s3 has 2gb ram and the same processor as note 2

Samsung Galaxy S3 = Phone benchmark
Samsung Galaxy Note 2 = Phone BENCHMARK ALL CAPS

mannyvinny bro, i was also in same situation when i was planning to buy the phone about a month back. Both are lovely sets. In my case, in the end .. 2gb ram was THE ONLY reason i bought the note2. See s4, xperiaz, htc one .. all new devices are coming with 2gig ram. Trust me this was real factor i got this beast. Secondly larger screen is always plus. And pixel density, i dont hardly see any difference :silly:
So, my suggestion.. go for note 2. Spend your hard earned money on some feature proof device.
edit, do read the SDS issue related thread before purchasing!

Buy an S3 i9305 with 2gb. I'm thinking of moving there as my note's size is beginning to bug me. Yes 2gb is a bliss when I tap to open Facebook and it opens instantly, as opposed to my previous note1 which killed it everytime in need of free ram, as it is a really heavy app 70+MB. Because in reality 1gb ram translates in 200-300mb free, which can be filled really quickly and it's really frustrating and embarrasing waiting for some secs for apps to load, when I have a beast of a phone.

i used both GN2 and S4.....and i like note2 more than s4......big screen long hr battery for internet surfing and gaming....and how can my fingers replace the amazing spen

There's still an issue with the S3 LTE which is the fact that LTE consumes more power and yet the battery pack remained unchanged. Also the LTE version only has an additional ram but not the same CPU clock speed as the Note 2, by default at least.

I owned an S3 and a Note 2 and I can tell you in my opinion it does make a difference, Note 2 is noticeably better.

its all a matter of opinion really
I had the note 1, went to the galaxy nexus then now the S3, I saw that while i liked the pen, the screen was large enough for quick things but not large enough to be a really effective pen based device...
so I'll probably get the note 10.1 for a good pen based device vs the smaller screen...
good luck on your decision!
I was thinking the same thing for awhile now.. I let me know why you do

I would say yes if you want the next version of Android. It starts out with JB out of the box. And the S3 only has ICS as of right now.

Well It's a definite upgrade from the galaxy s3 for many reasons such as:
- Bigger battery, the note 2 has a 3100mah battery
- Gorgeous display, unlike the s3 the note 2 doesn't use the pentile matrix giving it an improved display
- S pen, some like it some don't but the point is that it's there
- More features, if you watch videos on youtube you will see that the note 2 has more features packed into it that the s3 doesn't, such as multi windows, which is basically true multitasking.
So if you don't mind the bigger screen then I would definitely recommend it.

You do not know what you are talking about lol. Those software feautures can easily be ported to our device and not really an upgrade since that quad core cpu is still using the old technology and as it regards the battery you gotta make a ratio comparison battery size/screen size and then say if it is an upgrade or not.

Well let's go ahead and assume someone ports the features to our phones, that still leaves 3 (possibly more) features that the note 2 has that the galaxy s3 doesn't. If you look online and watch reviews you will hear that the note 2 has amazing battery life even with heavy usage, and you will also find that the display in fact does not use the pentile matrix, therefore it is technically an upgrade from the s3.

They used to say the same when note one came out and battery life sucked. I do not need to read reviews online just go to the note 2 forum and read all complaints about battery life. As it regards the screen difference you would not notice any difference if they didnt tell you which is which. Anyway to each their own.

Well I actually went to the note 2 forum and I did not see any complaints about battery life, I also googled "galaxy note 2 bad battery life" and I did not get any results of a person complaining about battery life so I'm going to go ahead and say based on facts/research the note 2 has good/great battery life. As far as the screen goes it is noticeable, and regardless of whether you notice a difference or not it's there none the less and is technically an upgrade. Look at it this way, if someone were to offer you a galaxy s3 with a screen that didn't use the pentile matrix and had a 2800mah battery would you take it?

I am not taking any phone that does not have a15 cpu. Samsung is very good at marketing. I had note one when came out and it is fun for first week only and then nothing special. I use an anker 4400 and get 9 hrs screen on time heavy usage sp if the choice was cuz of battery life only nah then. The screen yes sucks if you try to read out in the sun or at the beach but i do not think sammy has made any changes to fix that considering all the galaxy line phones historically have had bad screen brightness compared to their competitor htc for example.

Told you how it is not an upgrade it has old technology cpu, still same camera. You say got better screen, i say normal user notices no difference. Battery is bigger but does not mean anything cuz screen is bigger too so it spends more juice. software features as i said are not worth mentioning cuz once gs3 came out features were easily ported to gs2 and as u moght have noticed we are already using note2 camera+gallery.

- "old cpu technology"
Well it will be coming to the U.S with a exynos processor which is fantastic and benchmarks show that it's faster then our dual core s4 processors.
- "You say got better screen, i say normal user notices no difference."
Again this is your opinion but regardless it is still technically an upgrade to the screen, sort of like the difference between 1080p and 720p, some say it's not noticeable on a display this small but regardless it would still be an improvement.
- "Battery is bigger but does not mean anything cuz screen is bigger too so it spends more juice."
Well based on the fact that I went to the note 2 forums as you suggested and saw no negative posts about battery life I'd say it's definitely better. Not good enough for you, read this: http://www.phonearena.com/reviews/Samsung-Galaxy-Note-II-Review_id3134/page/4
- "software features as i said are not worth mentioning..."
While this is true, there is currently no port for the note 2 features so it doesn't matter if it's possible because there is currently no port for it.
Anything else?

i'm not with you here.
there are several useful gestures via hovering with the s-pen that would never be replicated on the s3. the note2 is somewhat approaching desktop like functionality and packing it in a device that fits in your pocket.
My only gripe is that it might be too big, I'm loving the s3's size even after getting rid of my note. To say all the note 2 features can be ported over is a joke, and everyone complains about the pentile display. Not to mention the s3s default brightness values are even lower than the note 1. Out of the box the note 2 will have better performance and features. Size is the only thing that would hold people back.
If samsung made a Note 1.5 which would be the same size/design as the S3 packing the same goodies don't really think it would be a contest people would obviously pick the phone with better technology.
No one can make that decision but you. Everyone has their own opinion.

Note 2 or S3?

I have done much research, and have almost made up my mind. Please, convince me...
The number one factor in my decision is how fast the fan-boys reply... Lol/JK... I'm sorry, but seriously, nobody yet?
Having owned both, I can unequivocally say, the Note 2. The difference in size is not much, but the extra battery and screen estate is REALLY awesome :good: And the best part, the 2gb of RAM. I used to notice lags with the 1gb of RAM on the international version of the S3, however with this phone, nothing seems to bring it to its knees.. EVER!!

Everything said is true but the size part. The Note 2 is better in every aspect than the S3 but honestly I still not feel comfortable with its size (after more than 1 month) regarding a normal phone usage with one hand such as while standing on a train and so on. (of course when you can use it with 2 hands the big size goes back to be a positive)
Note 2. Why are you even considering another ?
Sent from my GT-N7100 using xda premium
I currently have both and hands down prefer the Note 2. Though you really need to take into account the size. Some people just cannot hold the Note 2 comfortably.
That being said, I'm about 5'5" and can type one handed with minimal issues.
All I can say is that although I admire the performance of my note 2 compared to my previous S3...I've dropped my note II on 2 occasions while trying to make a phone call with one hand, which never happened with my S3. I've got big hands but this thing is just too slim, slippery and wide(not a good combo imo) to use comfortably with one hand. Of course if you can live with it then by all means go with the Note 2.

note 2 has same resolution, but 50% more subpixels leading to a sharper screen with more vibrant colours. bigger screen as well.
one of the things i hated about my note 1 was that it never had enough ram. everytime i tried to multitask with something like like going from browser to sending a text message, it would dump all the browser memory data, so when i go back to browser, it would have to reload that whole page. this was on a 1gb note 1. when i heard the s3 only had 1gb as well, i envisioned having a similar problem, which my friend confirms with his s3. so the 2gb ram of the note 2 is much much better.
if you plan to overclock, then internals dont matter too much, but note 2 has higher clocked CPU and GPU.
battery life is monstrous, even compared to my note 1. soooo many more software optimisations leading to much much better battery life.

Souai summed it up pretty well, go with note 2, you won't regret it.
If you use your phones one handed often, then definately avoid the note 2.
I would suggest the LTE S3 with 2GB RAM.
As a novalty gadget note 2 is a winner. Fast powerfull and full of juice but omg the other day I was carrying my shopping and the damn phone rang it was almost impossinle to pick it up from my jackets pocket to answer it one handed and then the fear of dropping it on to the floor. If you need to make loads of calls and after practicality maybe wait for s4

For me that's a completely pointless comparison.
You can't consider Note 2 an upgrade over S3 because they're completely different devices. Note 2 is an upgrade for Note 1 users, and S3 is an upgrade for S2 users.
If you want to jump from S3 to Note for bigger screen - then in this particular aspect it will be an upgrade, but only because you actually switch between market segments.
If you don't care about bigger screen, s-pen support and 3100mah battery - then the 1 extra gig of ram is not really worth replacing your device for. And CPU is basically the same.
If you want big screen, s-pen and great battery life for your media pleasure - then yes, Note 2 - or simply switching from smartphone to 'phablet' segment will be an upgrade solely because of its screen.
Once you go phablet, you won’t go back

I completely agree. My partner has the S3 and I love the S3. I have the Note 2 and I love the Note 2. The S3 is perfect for him, and the Note 2 is perfect for me!
I REALLY like the 2GB of Ram. The screen is nice, while the same resolution as the S3. So WHILE most people LOVE the display on the Note 2, the S3 has more PPI which some people say makes it better, while others say it doesn't. It's a matter of opinion. I love my note 2 and its display.
Is the Note 2 an upgrade over the S3? No. Only because they're DIFFERENT devices! They're for different people. My partner sees the Note 2 and says "Wow I want it!" but then says he can't use it as easily with one hand, can't take it with him to work out (I only run, so it's easy in the pocket). I like big text and large areas to read on, and the Note 2 gives that to me! It's all about personal preference. The Note 2 and S3 are VERY similar in hardware. VERY VERY similar.
A huge improvement over the note 1. The additional ram more than doubles what the note1 had as you only had 700mb left after android. Compare to 1.7 after android on note 2. Just for that reason it's a good upgrade. The CPU quad v dual, upgraded vid and screen, led notification and physical home button also are great upgrades.

Those two are phones that are in different leagues.

note 2 Owners: does the galaxy s4 intrigue you enough to consider switching?

I think 5" screen would be perfect not to mention the other upgrades across the board. I love my note 2 to death but I do find it to be ever so slightly too large for my hands that 5" might be perfect.

I agree about the screen size. I'm so used to this that going smaller just doesn't make sense to me anymore. The specs on this phone is already amazing. I still have my gs3 that just sits there. And the s4 is to be just slightly bigger in screen size then the s3. No thank you. Not for me anymore. Like somebody else said I'll wait for the note 3.

If the s4 doesn't have anything greater than a quad and no amazing software improvements like the note 2 gallery, all share, touch wiz enhancement (yes its not as bad as it used to be in fact I love it on the GN2) then ill hold outtill GN3
Besides I see the i9300 may have 4.2 update comming soon so im sure we will also

I bought my note 2 specifically for simple note taking with spen... Sold my galaxy s3 which was great for it originally from iPhones the galaxy s3 made me an android lover over ios despite 3 past early efforts of trying.
I would definitely be intrigued in a note 3 but I really don't see much to improve on right now.... Maybe external card slot usb hdmi etc without using micro usb adapter? Even then probably not. Great phone this note 2

Maybe note 3 not s4,but by the time my upgrade is due,. We'll be talking about note 4 .
I love this phone and just to think I almost didn't purchase it due to its size, now it just feels right.

I think 5" screen would be perfect not to mention the other upgrades across the board. I love my note 2 to death but I do find it to be ever so slightly too large for my hands that 5" might be perfect.

Well in terms of size, I agree with you. I'm not adjusting to my Note II as well as I hoped - it's too big for me (one handed use and pocket). I'd prefer 130x70 mm phone with a 5" screen, perhaps with a pen, though I don't use it that much so far. But I'm not going to get an S4 - I'll wait for the next Nexus before considering a change. At least our phone (AT&T Note II) is rootable, but the fact that AOSP ROMs are handicapped by some hardware secrets (or so is my understanding) is too annoying to repeat a non-Nexus purchase. I hate the lack of SD card and battery too, but if I have to, I'll live with it next time (maybe in 2 years the internal storage will be large enough I won't care about the SD card).
Dara
My concern is that the GNII feels just big enough to make use of the spen, I don't feel like it would scale down to 5" size that well.
And like others I'm so 100% satisfied by this beast that I can't even imagine switching right now.

Here are the specs for the S4
Exynos 5 Octa 5410 chipset,
4.99 inches of Screen Size,
PowerVR SGX 544MP GPU,
Quad Core 1.8GHz Processor,
2GB RAM,PPI of 441
13MP Rear Camera, 2.1MP Front Facing Camera,NFC, Bluetooth 4.0, Wi Fi ac/ b / g/ n,
Jellybean 4.2 Firmware out of the Box
Besides the smaller screen, the chipset and the 13mp camera
Not too different from the Note 2. And Im pretty sure Verizon will have thier bootloaders locked.

I'm actually holding off until the Note 3. If the GN3 is 6.3", I'll buy the S4. Otherwise, GN3 it is.
Size doesn't matter... It's how you use it! That said, I'm not at all tempted. I love my GN2.

No. I did that with my OG note and the s3. Ended up getting the note 2. Will wait for the note 3.
I love my note 2 and can not see myself with any other phone right now. I find it to be ahead of the curve and I can't think of what else they can do to improve it beside a bigger app selection "apps not games" but that's a developer issue. We need more devs to cater to us the note 2 users.

Getting an S IV would be a downgrade for most people who got the Note 2 for what it was intended to be used for. I haven't met many people who could go back to a smaller screen after owning a Note. For the people who are just spec whores and want the latest + greatest, I'm sure the S IV will be something they can't live without. But for those who want the large screen and all of the great things that come with it; the capabilities of the S Pen; and other features that won't be entirely eclipsed by the S IV... the Note 2 will continue to serve us well. I may be slightly jealous of a full-1080p HD screen and incremental hardware improvements, but other than that, I can easily wait for the Note 3 which of course will dance circles around the S IV. And what's up with the megapixels of these cameras getting insanely bigger and bigger? Just marketing hype tailored towards the ignorant. Most people equated more megapixels with better photo quality, having no idea it just means you'll be able to take insanely large pictures, for print media and displaying on large screens. Give me a great camera with DSLR-like quality. The extra megapixels can suck it!
Exynos + PowerVR = Drool
I'll be grabbing one if true

[Q] Just 2 steps from buying the Galaxy Note 2...

Hi,
I was about to buy the GS4 but I thought of the Note II
I'm impressed with this phablet
Just 2 questions about the note 2 to make sure it's a good choice for me.
1- There is a huge difference in hardware (CPU & GPU) between note 2 and the S4
But I saw that people don't have any lag even in latest hardcore games
Can the note 2 be good for a while or maybe in the near future it will be and old device & can't handle new games??
I mean the S4 got about 28000 vs 18000 on the note 2 on ANTUTU Bench.
I this points difference is for nothing?
2- The camera of the note 2... If I try to capture a written text on the blackboard about 7~10 meters far away from me... can I really get the a good picture?? (I mean in the college )
Or should I get the 13MP of the S4??
Hi and welcome!
1. The difference between Note 2 hardware and GS4 hardware is not so important as long as Note 2's hardware can provide enough power. And it does. Plenty. If you look to benchmarks for answers, you'll be disappointed to know that the synthetic benchmarks don't reflect real life usage, so the scores are more or less an indicator. Not to mention that the newer phones like GS4 have some tweaks in order to get higher scores in benchmarks. You can safely buy Note 2 from this point of view, it's powerful enough to play any game out there, plus it does it on a big beautiful screen and not eating all your battery while doing it.
2. The camera can take good pictures, for what you say you need, it's perfect. You may get bigger pictures from the GS4 due to it's lager sensor, but unless you shoot very small text or you need to print a banner from it, you won't see the difference.
I had to make the same choice some time ago, and I went with the Note 2. I don't regret a second for doing so, especially when my GS4-using friends keep asking for chargers constantly cause their battery won't last them through a day.

Thanks, you made my day :cyclops:
But I hope that other people ensure what you say cause I get confused after someone tells me that S4 is a better choice
Well, I wrote my opinion on this matter, others may have different preferences. It all comes up to what you need - big screen + big battery vs. fullHD + newer hardware - considering that if you put my Note 2 (and I say "my Note 2" because I'm talking about rooted + custom ROM) next to a GS4, you don't see any performance difference. Any.
Oh, yeah, and the pricing difference...
I agree with ruwin. However it all depends on what you want to use it for. I personally don't care to much for TouchWiz exclusive features which are now not so exclusive. For example, OmniRom have a note 2 custom ROM with android 4.3 with working multi window and there are now plenty of apps and mods which make good use of the s-pen. That being said and considering hardware differences to be neglible what makes the note 2 'better' in my opinion is the larger screen. I couldn't go back to a smaller screen now. And if your looking for the TW features, The 4.3 upgrade should be just around the corner and there are already fully functional note 3 features being ported. Don't be scared! Get the note 2

Thanks,
waiting for other opinions
Well I've had my note 2 for a year. I was eagerly awaiting the 3 and was going to buy that.
However, my father got the s4 so I had to set it all up for him and whilst the screen is nice, its too small and the battery life is the same. For me the gimmicks it has are pointless and if I was asked to swap my 2 for the s4 I wouldn't.
I'm a big game player and the bigger screen and battery are a must for me but everyone is different.

That's a good point
if it has a bigger screen + better battery life + good performance vs brighter Full HD >>> THE NOTE II WINS
The Note 2 is a better choice as it has better battery and S Pen features. Also I heard many users having problems with the S4 such as heating, etc.
Will add that if want to take pictures if blackboard notes in college, why cant you snap them after class, or have the teacher hold on for 3 seconds so you can take the photo before erasing?

Well, some teachers don't allow us to take pictures (don't know why) so we take the photo while he is not looking
The BB also gets to be erased about 4-5 times every class, so simply I can't capture it after the class

Yeah for me the bigger screen whilst playing is a must now. I know it seems hard to believe but I pick up my old phone and I couldn't believe how I used to play games on such a small screen.
For you I guess also price may be a factor? My dad wanted the note 2 but got a better deal on the s4.

Well, finally I'm getting the Note 3 instead if Allah wishes :fingers-crossed:
There is a 26% discount on its price, so it's about the same price as an S4
Thanks everyone for your help
It maybe helpful for anyone who is confused about the Note 2 and the S4
