[Q] How to train the handwriting recognition? - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
Finally bit the bullet and got a Note 2 to replace my aging HD2
Back to the problem, how does one train the Samsung keyboard to recognize my handwriting?
Currently it's crap,
Coming from a PC tablet with Vista/win7 where after some training, it could read my handwriting better than me, I'm massively disappointing and confused.
Searching around, it seems like it's not possible, and people recommend just learning to write the Samsung way
I though we left that crap behind back in the Palm era.
I did try WritePad briefly as it seems even crappier than Samsung's one.
Is there anything else, a hack, mod, another 3rd party software?

No new info there.

Unfortunately, Samsung is known for making thounsands of things that don't work as we expect.

Well I do hope they or a 3rd party dev will pick up the slack.
Having hadwriting recognition without possibility to train it is mind boggling.
It's like they're just using OCR algorithms which is stupid, and still, training would help even there.

I find the handwriting recognition great. I have very little trouble.

Too bad your handwriting is probably different from the OP. like him I actually hare to print rather than actually write when I'm using the handwriting input mode and it does slow me down a bit. I'll write a sentence and then realise that I need to go back again and change two or three things in the sentence because they have been detected incorrecty. Overall it's just plain faster to use Swype style input on the keyboard.

HTC Style Digital Pen (Stylus)?

Are there any Stylus' that work like the HTC Digital Pen?
I notice that when one is used on the Jetstream, there's an icon which allows you to change pen settings ect. I think that's the only reason I'd choose an HTC Tablet atm.
I don't think the Galaxy Tab has a digitizer layer like the flyer, jetstream, or thinkpad tablet. You can use a capacitive stylus to make annotations, but it's not the same as having a digitizer pen.

Your right m8... Our Tab 10.1's don't have the hardware or software for that matter to do any type of drawing or accurate hand written notes like the Flyer or Jetstream. I had the Flyer before I got my Tab... I keep the styles in hopes that it would work with my Tab, it didn't.

Yeah, cool toy, but not even close to what the OP was asking. And you're wrong. There is no digitizer layer in the GT10, so your best bet is a capacitive stylus. Or a sausage.
I've posted this elsewhere, but I'll repeat it here - I bought the Wacom Bamboo Stylus for my iPad2, and it worked brilliantly with the iPad. I have since sold the iPad and got the GalTab 10.1, and the Bamboo barely works at all. It cant be used for POINT selection (pushing a button on a webpage or game) and it doesnt DRAW well unless you push down really hard - almost like the screen needs pressure depression in order to register.
I relied HEAVILY on the stylus on the iPad for both drawing and basic navigation, and that it doesnt work on the GalTab is disappointing. I dont know what the problem is, or what technically causes the difference, or if it's just the Bamboo, but it just doesnt work.
(And I cant imagine it's a problem with the Bamboo as all the stylii are essentially the same thing - just varying quality.)
Check out the App "TouchScreenTune" in the Development Forum or in the Android Market. You need Root to use it, but it solves your problem (especially about drawing)
Thank you... after reading through about 12 pages of posts (hard coming into a device this late and keeping up), I finally found that. Not sure I want to root yet - until now, getting rid of the Navbar was my #1 reason to root, but TSTune just moved up to the #1 spot. Waiting for Cyanogen, though.

Just root it. It's super easy. Tasks rom is incredible and with the tst app its just awesome.
It's not a matter of it being "easy", but if I want to. I'm on my fourth Android phone, the first 3 were rooted and ROMed - several times, the fourth doesnt need it... yet.
So far I have only TWO things I want to change that I can only get through rooting/ROMs... I'm not sure that's enough.
For me task's roms were the only driver for rooting.
With this installed the device was literally reborn!
The user experience is like night and day, I will never regret it.
After that i also installed TouchScreenTune...well now with a stylus (Adonit Jot Pro) and Supernote I no longer use paper for taking notes! It's just amazing.

Well HOX, its been a great 2 weeks..

..but you're being replaced by the Droid Pro+, a slower, uglier, bulkier phone with a low rez screen.
Even by looking at the picture, you can see how horrible the screen on the Pro is compared to the HOX but that doesnt matter. I need my phone to reply back to texts, jot down notes, and input things in my calendar and i feel that the best, and quickest way to do this would be on a phone with physical keys. Oh and it feels great to have my four menu keys back.
I dont know what it is but i just couldnt get use to the on screen keyboard. Even using different keyboards(swiftkeys, ics keyboard, thumb keyboard, etc) i just found it really frustrating. I still think the iphone has by far the best onscreen keyboard.
Anyways, im not entirely putting the HOX out of comission, I still might use it as a weekend phone but as my daily driver, I'll be using the Pro+ until Motorola releases a better version.
Oh and one more thing..I've been a Treo user for the longest time so I just think I'm just bias towards phones with physical keyboards haha

Im posting this because as much as I love this phone, im a physical keyboard guy at heart, just wondering if anyone else can relate.
The HOX is an awesome phone but im not looking for awesome, im looking for productivity...Im sure gonna miss that screen though

Swype is much better than the iphone keyboard
After going from Sony Ericsson P900 to htc tytn ii to htc touch pro, I didn't think I could ever go without physical keyboard. I was wrong. Once you get used to it, an onscreen keyboard is much faster and definitely more productive because of it.

And why is that? Cause im not praising the hox? Cause im not saying how awesome it is and how it trumps any other phone out there right now? Im not bashing the phone in anyway, im simply saying that its not for me as a daily driver. It an awesome phone and its a beautiful built phone but as a daily driver, its not ideal for me.
Like i said, im not gonna stop using it complelty, im already missing the size of that screen but as other people stated, swype makes it easier to type on? Hell i might give it a shot.

My wife had the same issue when she went from a real keyboard to an on-screen one.
However, after trying various different one we have settled on Swiftkey 3 beta and now she would never go back.
Give it a little longer and you will see the benefits, hopefully.
Have you tried the keyboard on the 9900? It is heads and tails above any other keyboard I have used the this swift key is the second best.

I suppose what you just said would make sense in a socks thread and cereal thread but this is a phone forum, hence why we're talking about phones.
I stated that this phone was hard for me to adjust to and so far, a few people have actually recommended certain keyboards to try out. They're actually being pretty helpful come to think of it.
You know what? You best just mossy on if you have nothing informative to say lol

No, because this is the XDA Developers forum, not Facebook. These forums are for interesting topics that are informative and useful, not someone's personal opinion about whether a physical keyboard is better than a software one. This forum is for that.
I don't mean to cause offence, but there are A LOT of these kind of threads.
@Op,
Another boring thread about the HOX being bad....
How many of these threads has been opened?
If you don't like it go to the machine you like to my opinion but stop cluttering the board and bother us with this BS.
Post is in the wrong section as well, if you are so full of keyboards and Droid Pro+ you should have tried XDA General section to hit a 'wider audience' with your 'experience'.
Pffff... bye!
OP, for lack of a kinder way to phrase it, and the fact it's been a long day...
Shutup.
If you want to point out serious issues, ways the community can help you with that, then by all means that is what XDA is for.
What it isn't for....is to write a tribute to your One X, saying goodbye to it because you don't like the keyboard.
You can do that in private, just hold it up and say goodbye.
enough with these stupid stupid threads, really the worst part about the HOX
its good reviews and coverage attracted too many newbies to "try" it out
you know i made too new decisions i will never ever again advice and apple fan to buy or try an android...seriously i want me, my family and my friends to enjoy it all on our own

Are you deluding yourself or just not reading the responses?
And... You specified that even with 3rd party keyboards you were not happy so why would I suggest keyboards?
This thread was simply you trolling. I know it, you know it, even the people who were politely making suggestions probably knew it. What kind souls with such humility. Not me, I call it as I see it.
Yet again another pointless thread that will be closed by the mods.
If I don't like anything about ANY phone I have I don't broadcast it to the nation I try and find a solution to the problem. If I can't find one I'll live with it. No doubt there are things you don't like on your replacement, are you gonna broadcast to the world again and get another phone?
Please mods close the thread.

Meh.. Its not great, but it's okay. You would never see me wearing one. I do, however, have my eyes on the Note 3. I own the s4 currently, but have always had a slight desire for the Note. I wasn't too sure about holding that monster up to my ear, but now that I have converted myself to only using a Bluetooth, I think I might JUMP (pun intended) on it.

I already have a Samsung smart watch... I pull it out of my pocket, press the button on the top-right, and I can see what time it is. Among other things it also makes phone calls, records video, and is quite adept at just generally being pretty awesome.
I don't see the necessity for the smart watch, especially since it has to be paired with a phone. It seems cool and all, but I think it's far too limited to be used regularly, intuitively speaking, and is also a bit pricey and gimmicky, imo. Of course, I'm sure some will come along and sing of it's praises, but to that poor misguided chap, I simply reply: bellow your misguided attempts of impression to someone else, for I remain thoroughly unimpressed!
Instead of a smart watch, i would rather a Star Trek style communicator badge.
The Note 3 does look like a decent upgrade from the N7000.
One thing i would like to see in a smartphone is a digital radio receiver, rather than (or in addition to) FM. I know digital radio isn't as ubiquitous as FM - and the standard varies from place to place (DAB+ here in Australia, iirc). But it would be pretty neat, and certainly innovative.

im more interested in how the nexus 5 will turn out. The note 3 is good n all, but its too big for me, and s pen doesnt really grab me either. One of many good things i like about switching from sprint to tmobile is that switching phones is so much easier. ill have my s4 as a home phone and my nexus 5 as a going out device.
And seeing how t-mobile is dragging their feet with updating us without even giving us a reason, the nexus line is that much more appealing

I would just like T-Mobile and Samsung to get me a phone that a) works with Bluetooth without breaking up; b) works with Speaker without breaking up, and c) actually does what it is supposed to do - when I want it to do so, regardless of where I am.
I really don't see this thing (S4) any better than my Bionic!

Crooked scrolling problem??????

Hi
My old Samsung galaxy tab s2 9.7 had terrible slanted/wavy/crooked scrolling when scrolling text heavy Web pages in any browser or twitter etc... But it only happened in portrait mode.... Personally I prefer to use portrait mode, so I was stuffed lol
Does this tablet have the same issue?
It's really easy to replicate, just browse a text heavy Web page whilst holding the S4 in portrait position, are the lines of text crooked? ,looks as though the left side of the screen is scrolling faster than the right, giving a crooked look to the lines of text when scrolling.... Like I say, the s2 9.7 definitely had this problem.... Bit scared to buy the S4 if its also present to.
Like I say only happens in portrait, never in landscape.
I'd be really grateful to anyone who has the s4 to check for this problem,I love the super amoled screens on these tabs, but because of this problem I had to bin my s2 9.7 and go with an ipad.
I skipped the s3 9.7 because it POSSIBLY had the same issue.
Would love to buy the new S4 but if the issue is still there I'm in trouble.
Thanks for any help, would be much appreciated.

Nice one mate, much appreciated..... You've saved me a lot of money and inconvenience.

I have never seen that before, however this is the first android tablet I've owned in 6 years. That is really jarring and I can see why it would be annoying

To be fair Reuben.... We SHOULDN'T have to ignore it,it should be FIXED.... BTW I had the old galaxy tab A 9.7...the predecessor to the Tab A 10.1 2016....and also had the tab A 10.1 2016... Neither of which had this problem... So I don't think it can be put down to just an android issue.

I'm surprised, this is my first Tablet, after a Amazon 7" where I had this issue too, to see this on a highend tablet too.
Why? I'm not happy to see this straight after 5 minutes usage.
:crying:
Totally understandable mate, honestly,it was giving me a migraine it was that noticeable on my old s2 9.7,that’s why I sold it and bought a iPad Pro 10.5...absolutely zero problem now when scrolling in portrait...do miss the super amoled screen though.
If the s4 didn’t have the scrolling problem I’d have gone back to Android.

The iPad pro is a great device mind you. I used it for 10 months but apple customer service was beyond a joke for me and I sold it for the tab S4. The wavey scrolling does really annoy me at the moment. But fortunately I use it mainly in landscape. I'm still not a fan of IOS but ipads do work well. Glad to be back on an android mind

Check this post of me. Very annoying scrolling. I will return my device!

Yeah Reuben,if you’re mainly someone who uses it in landscape there’s zero problem I agree,I’m the other way round though lol...much prefer portrait...
Agree with you though,I do miss Android....and do miss the beauty of an Amoled screen.
I wish I had seen this thread before I ordered the S4. Luckily I was able to return it, but I don't understand why nobody mentioned this issue in reviews. It's pretty darn noticeable.

It's so weird, as it is really annoying

What do you have to do to see this effect? I cannot see anything like the horrific distortion implied by descriptions of this problem. Or any distortion. Maybe a little when scrolling so fast I can barely register much less read text, but nothing in normal scrolling.
Hold the Tab in Portrait Mode and open a website with a lot of text. Might work with a word document too, but never tested.
Then move the text up and down.
Seriously it's there, be happy if you can't see it

LoL most st*pid reply so far in this thread. You should read it before making such bold statement.
The issue is there, it's just that not every can see it. Like LED flickering. Some people see it while others can't.
Anyway I'm happy with my Huawei which does not have the issue at all.

It most definitely is there. I personally can't even understand how it's possible for someone not to notice the issue, but apparently some people notice it more than others.
Also, why are you spouting nonsense about us being Apple fanboys? Seriously, I was devastated by this issue just because I DON'T want an iPad. Sending the S4 back was the absolute last thing I wanted to do. It had other flaws, which I was more than willing to live with, but I am EXTREMELY picky when it comes to a display.
Anyway, if you want to discuss this like proper adults instead of flinging cheap insults at us, go and have a look at this webpage: https://www.testufo.com/scanskew
It tries to illustrate the issue at the hand of moving lines across your screen. (you can change the direction of the line movement in that tool. If the lines move from top to bottom, you should see them skew on the Tab S4 as they move up and down the screen. If you let them move sideways, they shouldn't be skewed)
I'll try my best to explain the issue: The theory here is that the screen is skewing content because of the refresh direction of the display. What we're seeing on the Tab S4 is that the display is mounted in the device in landscape orientation which means that, when holding the device in portrait mode, it's refreshing the screen sideways rather than top-to-bottom. This makes that the content we're looking at is refreshed at one side of the screen while it isn't yet at the other side, resulting in the content looking skewed while the display is refreshing.
This issue is not limited to the Tab S4. In fact, every display in existence shows this behaviour, albeit some to a lesser extent than others. If I use the above tool to test for scan skew, I can see that even my €1000 PC monitor exhibits scan skew, but in the landscape orientation because it refreshes from top to bottom, as opposed to the Tab S4.
I'm not sure why the issue was so apparent on the Tab S4's screen, but I'm going to assume it has to do with the OLED screen, as the problem is probably also present on other tablets like the Huawei M5 and iPad (see, an Apple fanboy wouldn't say that, would they?) but is not as noticeable.
-Shrug- I can't see it even with the scanskew tool. Guess my eyes aren't fast enough to pick up the refresh. Works for me, I'm loving my S4

What features are you going to miss, love or are concerned with when buying the Fold?

Without ever seeing the Fold in person and actually handling it I going to miss a few features based on the Specs I've read and videos I've watched. Here's my list.
Features I might miss:
1. Larger front facing screen...my caveat here is if the screen was larger it would probably be way too skinny anyway and would look really weird because of the dimensions..
2. Iris Scanner - love this feature on my N9. I know it's already gone on the S10's but it just works so well.
3. Update :MST for Samsung Pay is Probable for all phones. From what I've read, we're only getting NFC at least on AT&T but their website could be wrong since Samsung says it will have MST & AND NFC. That is always the beauty of Samsung Pay over various other Pay technologies. Worked just about everywhere for me.
4. MicroSD slot. OK, I might not use up the 512GB but do love the MicroSSD option which is great to easily move files and backups around., etc.
5. Waterproofing. I'm guessing that the Hinge is the problem and it would be difficult to waterproof the phone because of it.
6. The Fold would have been perfect if it had an S-Pen...with a selfie camera in the S-Pen (LOL!).
Features I'm not happy with (but I'll still live with):
1. That damn notch with a bezel on the big/inside screen. Almost made me bypass the pre-order. If that screen wasn't so large, I definitely would not have bought the phone. I swore I'd never buy a phone with a notch...Oh well.
2. (I know that this should probably be number one) The Crease! It remains to be seen but every video displays the crease in some manner. I find it funny that any article that I've read where Samsung has replied states that the crease is only seen in these **pre-production** models and the crease will not be seen on the final Fold versions. I'm not holding my breath on this one! So many reviewers stated that looking at the screen straight on and/or with a different wallpaper that the crease is barely visible or not visible at all. Now looking at the screen off to the side, the crease can be seen.
3. The batteries. They should have installed greater mAh capacity batteries. C'mon Samsung! You're using 2 separate batteries, give us more juice. You know we'll be on the 7.3" screen constantly!
4. I'm not really mad that they removed the headphone jack. I love options but 99% of the time I'm using BT headphones anyway.
5. The cameras. OK, we have LOTS of them! But for almost $2000.00 these cameras should have been even better than the S10/S10+'s cams. This Fold phone is Super Special and should have had a little bit more (can you say 10 X optical zoom? Might not have fit though).
6. I am still not fond of the Bixby functionality in comparison to Google Assistant. The Bixby routines are probably the best part of Bixby. I'll probably bypass Bixby.
7. Bixby button also being the fingerprint scanner. I'll lose my mind if I continually activate the Bixby button instead of unlocking my phone. That would make me crazy so I would use other software to disable Bixby altogether.
8. Many early articles on the Fold stated that Samsung would give us a free year of Samsung Premium Care+. I'm hoping that when I receive the Fold, I'll be surprised and find documentation to sign up for our free year. I'm probably dreaming...
9. They should have offered more for Trade-ins. Only up to $300.00 where it was $550.00 for the S10 possible trade-in values. (I'm kind of glad though since I may just need to keep my Note 9 around for awhile).
Unknowns:
1. It remains to be seen if the developers will build apps to work with continuity and sizing, etc. If that isn't done then we might own a $2000.00 boring paperweight. I need my Kustom suite of Apps and if they don't work, the Fold will be almost useless to me).
2. Will the Fold just be too long to easily fit in my pocket. I never put any phones in a back pocket but occasionally put in front pocket. Most of the time it's in a zippered pocket in a jacket or purse or backpack or small waist pack. I'm really not too worried..yet! Hahaha!
3. We definitely need a variety of cases. I'm sure they'll come. The interest in the Fold has seemingly surpassed Samsung's expectations. Samsung kept the final Fold design under wraps so long that I think that's one of the reasons the case makers haven't delivered yet (or they thought that the Fold wouldn't have much interest). I need a super protective Clear Case. I want to show off that Martian green with Gold Hinge!! (and I want to look at it too).
Final observations:
With all of the unknowns and possible negatives, don't get me wrong. I want the Fold!
I love being an early adopter and have saved up for this thing. I've been following Samsung over the years and drooling at all of their foldable prototypes.
With Samsung's track record on gorgeous displays, I know I'll love the tablet screen. I think that the small front screen is not a deal breaker because I liken it to my Lock/AOD screen where I glance at information then move on to the larger screen. It will be just one more step to fully open the Fold. Not inconvenient when you know what's coming! A huge, beautiful screen.
The COOL factor for the Fold is priceless! I am so anxious to get it and I know the feeling will continue as others spot the phone and want to check it out.
If the Fold ends up being a fantastic phone for me, then I'll be selling off a few other Tablets I have as well as my N9.
This is going to be Big! Cannot wait to play!

Based off of the limited amount of people that will buy and have this device probably not, but I could be wrong ?
I'll miss the spen even though I don't use it that often, but the main thing I'll miss about that functionality is being able to capture video as an animated gif (I don't know if this exists on the S series as I've only used Notes as far as Samsung's go). I'll probably use my old Wacom dumb capacitive stylus that's been sitting a drawer for a few years for the simple diagrams I draw in meetings using One note. It did the trick when I used to use an iPad all of the time.
The small screen might get irritating if I want to tap out a message as I already find it difficult using something as small as an iPhone SE. Although with keyboard customisation maybe bigger keys can make that easier.
The notch doesn't really bother me. A hole punch would be equally as distracting as a notch to me on a regular phone, but in a screen that big I can't see it being a problem.
I'm definitely changing the scaling and fitting more on that display. Apparently that's how you get many apps to use tablet mode rather than a big phone layout, so I'll be really happy if that's actually true. But I'd set my mind on getting one even before I heard about that so I won't mind if it doesn't work on everything.
I haven't seen whether Dex is available in tablet mode as it is on the larger Samsung tablets. That would be a killer app for me. I know we can use up to 3 apps, but it's not the same as having a few windows layered and tapping between them, especially if you're copying and pasting between a few documents and you want that bigger layout on each to see text placement properly. Maybe someone will manage to extract and develop an apk that doesn't require root for that.
With regards to the above, I used to have a Toshiba PDA that ran Windows Mobile and with it's 800x600 display you could change the screen scaling and achieve a similar effect. It was pretty great.
The thing I'm mainly looking forward to is reducing my travel kit from a phone, tablet, and kindle to just one device. Ok maybe not just one device, I'll have room for my Switch more often now. Airport security love giving my bags an extra search due to all of the gadgets I end up carrying, and hopefully this will mean I just sail through like most other people.
And while it may be an elitist prick move, I want people to notice it. Most friends and colleagues know I'm a tech geek, but nobody notices the tech anymore, as all of the phones and tablets look so similar. They don't realise it's something new or cool and don't ask. Plus, nowadays all it involves is showing off something a bit faster with more storage and a better camera. Nothing has done anything new for years now. This brings back that wow factor when new phones had something brand new and sparks conversation about the future again.
The US devices will have locked bootloaders just like the other US Samsung devices. Unless I've missed it there is no word on international devices yet. If you're like me and root is a necessity you might want to consider waiting until the situation is sorted out.
Edit... One other thing I ran into today in regards to a potential S-pen is that a reviewer was opining the screen was too soft to support writing. That was a stated opinion not a fact from Samsung. So a guess but not an unreasonable one; It isn't hard to imagine the screen not being able to hold up to a pen.

The specs on Samsung.com for the Fold only show NFC for Samsung Pay. They did the same thing on the Galaxy Watches.

Doubtful on AT&T or T-MO devices... You know it's always that locked bootloader thing in US phones.

Looks like we'll still be able to create a gif from a video (you could still have done it on the S9's too). Here's a tutorial for the S10's so I'm sure the Fold will be able to make one too:

Also, it is Dex ready/capable.
Great points you've made in your response! Thx!

This would be great! I'm wondering if it's for Non US Folds. I'm hoping it's for everyone. I wish I had the eSim/nano sim option but not with my carrier (AT&T).
MST not listed in their specs but hopefully it's just incorrect. Thank you for the clarification.

I'm out of here. I'm a rooter and right now I'm now feeling the love with dropping 2k on this device and then killing the warranty. This isn't a complaint per se, it's just not the right tree to be sniffing around for those like me that will most def flog the thing. I do hope all who buy in enjoy the bejesus out of themselves. Good luck gents.

I was just reading AT&T version of the manual & no mention of MST, only NFC. THAT would be stupid to me & I'd really miss it.
