Update With Root? - T-Mobile, Samsung Galaxy SIII

My friend has a t mobile galaxy s3. He hasn't touched the build.prop or anything. If I put him on stock recovery, can he take the t mobile update?
Is there an app that can keep his root? He is on 4.1.1.
The only thing he messed with is root so he can do certain things.

If device status in the about phone menu says Modified, then it will not get an ota update (I assume thats what you are trying to do?).
Why not just flash the latest firmware uusing Odin? Better than an ota imo.
But to answer your question, the pro versions of Superuser, SuperSU, Mobile Odin can keep you rooted, or theres voodoo ota rootkeeper.

You could just download and flash a 4.1.2'stock rooted ROM. Then you don't have to use Odin and can keep root.

That way doesn't net you the full update though.

What do you mean it "doesn't net you the full update"?
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda premium

By flashing a stock rooted rom in recovery you are only flashing the system partition.
To get the full update you have to flash the firmware in Odin. This way you get the updated bootloader, modem, and 4 other partition updates.

There are flashable zips to update the bootloader and modem.
What are the other 4 partition updates?
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda premium

Yes, but also, if you go the Odin route, its just a single flash, plus if using root66 it doesnt make the device status modified.
The additional partitions included in a firmware package are:
Aboot
Boot
Cache
Modem
Recovery
Rpm
Sbl1
Sbl2
Tz
I believe flashing the firmware package you mentioned does flash all of them, but the only reason I can see to use it is if you want the updates, but do not want to flash /system.
Otherwise, imo, you're better off using Odin to flash the root66 package.

+1. The firmware package being referenced is targeted to AOSP users.

I was just mentioning the flashable zips because it sounds like his friend wanted to keep root and to simply update the phone.
Also, just flashing one of the already rooted 4.1.2 ROMs will not flash the latest radio (which has been causing problems such as slower data speeds and a weaker signal).

Right, I know. The ota update includes more than a rom does though, so I just mentioned it in case he didn't know
As for the radio/modem, data speed and signal strength will vary, mostly depending on location. I wouldnt say there have been problems with it though. Itll be better for some and worse for others. The only way for each person to know is for them to try it. And if you want the best modem, you unfortunately have to just test them all out. (The map in my thread is there to help with this though. You should check it out if you haven't already.)

As long as it's 100% stock, not rooted, device status = normal, and all firmware matches (kernel, baseband, sbl's, tz, rpm), then yes you can get the OTA.
If status is normal, but anything else isn't right, it can try the OTA but it will fail.
I'm just curious though, why go through all that trouble just to get updated via ota? There are easier ways such as flashing firmware via Odin. Or if you really just want to try the OTA, you can download it from my firmware thread.

It may help to know what ora and model phone you have in case specifics are needed.
But you must be 100% stock. No mods, matching modem, stock recovery. Then put the ota on external and flash in recovery.
Or use mobile odin. If still fails may be a bad download.

It's T999 duh, Isn't there a zip for this update? Or other way I could go with Custom ROM, I don't know which one though, probably just one with Debloat, no mods, or themes

Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app
You can flash the otas in stock recovery if thats what you mean. But you have to be full stock UVALH2 first.
If you mean one of the roms based on those leaked otas then you have to flash with cwm or twrp.

Ok, first and just fyi, all of the files listed under OTA on that site are leaked, unofficial updates. Each has its own.....quirks. the only officially released ones are above the otas listed under firmware i believe. Only ics 4.0.4 are official builds.
The otas are basically patches, not full firmware. They patch existing files to update them to a newer release.
If you still want to go with the otas there are a few ways to do this.
The official way:
From full stock UVALH2 (no mods, debloating, modem must match, stock recovery, root is ok) boot into recovery and flash.
If previously rooted you can attempt to preserve root using Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper.
Mobile Odin method (root required):
Get free Mobile Odin from xda, get full version on play store. (Full version will inject root during flash. I highly recommend this method)
Open Mobile Odin and choose OTA/Update.zip. Select the OTA you wish to flash. If pro version make sure EverRoot options are selected. Do not check wipe data, cache or dalvik. Press Flash Firmware and confirm to start the process.
CWM method (root required):
I have not fone this myself so try to confirm elsewhere the exact steps. Using latest cwm recovery, flash ota file and when asked do not flash recovery. When flashing is complete then flash a cwm flashable version of SuperSu/Superuser. Reboot.
After flashing any ota check for these files and if present delete or rename them. They rewrite stock recovery every boot.
/system/recovery-from-boot.p
/system/etc/install-recovery.sh
Thats it! If i missed anything please let me know, particularly with cwm method. Thx
Alternatively you can just flash a rom in dev section based on these otas.
Hope that helps! Good luck!

Are you currently on build UVALEM? If so would you be willing to make a copy of the update.zip for me? It should be located either in /cache/fota or /data/fota
Honestly the easiest (and in my opinion the best) way to get to the latest official build UVALH2 and keep root is to flash MrRobinsons root66 version with odin or mobile odin.
Though if you just want to use the ota then you first must be full stock, no mods no removed bloat, etc. Then get voodoo ota rootkeeper and preserve root, reboot to stock recovery and flash the ota. Then reboot and restore root.
Alternatively, you can flash with mobile odin pro and itll inject root during the process. (Dont do this if you have modded build.prop for wallet). You dont need to meet the stock requirements this way.

[Q] Problems updating to JB for S3 on stock ROM

Hello,
As an update to my situation, I switch back to stock recovery. However, I still have the same problem. Then, I decide to boot into recovery and apply the update from recovery. I use the OTA update.zip file and and the update.zip file from here.
http://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=9390169635556426433
I notice that the two update.zip file is different by size a little bit. I have no clue why it is not working or what I have done wrong. The ROM I am using is the original stock ROM with rooted. I want to know what I should do to update without wiping everything and flashing a new stock Jelly Bean ROM.
Thank you.
Just use Odin. Takes 10 min tops. Fool proof.

Can you elaborate more on using Odin and which ROM to use? My OTA update.zip has a size of 335.65 MB, while the update.zip I downloaded from the thread below has a size of 334.2 MB. They have different size so I assume there is a slight different in the ROM and, thus the size.

You will lose root though unless you use voodoo rootkeeper or mobile odin pro.

You probably have a custom recovery causing it to fail.
Regardless of how you update you will possibly lose some settings. Its recommended, but not required to do a clean update anyway. But flashing with odin should preserve your settings as well as the ota would. Once they boot up it shouldn't matter as the resulting build is the same.

Depends if you've done anything to your current build.
Cwm will flash it, but I just don't care for it. Caused probs for quite a few people.
But you have to be full stock. No mods, no deodexing, no bloat removal, no modems flashed, etc.
Then you should be able to flash it in cwm.
Its preferred you do it through stock recovery. You can use voodoo rootkeeper to preserve root.
