[help HTC Desire stuck in bootloop - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Okey so things i know from top of my head.
My SD card is partitioned 6GB+2GB (8 GB SD HC).
It's S-OFF.
Rooted.
I backed up all my data, messages usefull apps etc. So I dont care about the data in the phone or on the card.
Today I got tired of my normal HTC Desire OS (2.2) it was slow, I was constantly annoyed with "you are low on space" etc. The phone was slow, very slow. And I decided to put a custom rom. A while ago, about a year ago I prepared it for a custom rom, but didn't have the time to put it to use. Since I had exams etc. So today I had the time to do it. Since i prepared it a year ago, I didn't do any normal preparations (how dumb of me). I just found a good custom ROM I liked, and found a guide on how to do it. Skipping the normal steps. And now im stucked in bootloop!
I used following threads: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1016084
Used this rom: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2184358
Please help, what can i do to put it out of boot loop. I wiped data/factory/cache and dalvik. Everything numerous times.

Did you make a nandroid backup before flashing?
Which method did you use to partition your sd-card?

When I flash roms, my desire wont boot...

Another newbie question sorry... I have successfully rooted my desire as per paul's guide.
I'm now trying to put Pays sparta rom on it but when it has been flashed and i try to boot my phone, it goes to the white HTC screen and then to a black screen with just HTC written on it.... and never gets any further.
If I go back to stock rom or the rooted one, that's fine but I cannot get this or other roms to work.
Am I missing something?
I've wiped to factory defaults, wiped the dalvik stuff etc and then loaded the rom from the SD card.
I'd love to get a custom rom on my phone but am struggling so any help would be massively appreciated.
Thanks!

Did you partition your SD card while in recovery mode just after flashing the rom? That is probably what was causing it.
Try again but remember to partition your SD card before you reboot.
I had the same problem that you are seeing and it's now all ok.
As the first post in the Pays thread says, use AM desire recovery to wipe the various areas and it should then work fine.
I was just being a divvy....
It was taking ages because of the Apps2SD stuff... transferring files to the SD card.
Done and dusted now and loving Pays Sparta rom.

[Q] Newby need entlightment from pros

Hello everyone,
I just got myself a new HTC Desire with Vodafone Branding.
HBOOT : 0.800
Software number: 1.19.161.5 (I believe this should be Android 2.1)
Kernel version : 2.6.29-b7e82785 (I guess this is still HTC original)
I wanna root my phone and if I guess that I can do further, I am also thinking of using another rom.
My main concern is that the internal memory can not fit any more apps and I still want to add more, after searching in the internet I found out that I need to root and/or to use other rom.
Second concern...I just wanna learn..
I have downloaded Unrevoked3 and the H-Boot USB driver.
From what I have read, I am all set for rooting (gonna do this tomorrow evening after work and after I have calmed down a bit, I am a bit nervous cause this is my first time ).
I have removed the HTCsync but still keeping the drivers.
I also know that I will need ClockworkMod. Make EXT2/3/4 partition with at least 512MB (I would like to make it 1gb) and optional SWAP (perhaps I will make it 256mb, do I really need SWAP?).
So, please teach me on :
1. Now about the rom, I need an Android 2.2 with optimum stability and speed, to tell you the fact, I don't even now which one and where to get it.
2. Beside the main rom, do I need also the camera and radio rom to get them running? again where to get them? How do I install them? The same way as installing the main rom (from HBOOT recovery)? Before or after installing the main rom?
3. How to make the back up of my current rom, setting, and apps? I don't have much apps yet but perhaps I would need the backup if something went wrong.
I still a whole bunch of questions but I guess those will do for now.
Please be kind and help me one this one pleaassssseeeeeeeee...
Anyway...thanks in advance.
Read in development.

1. This thread has all the rom's in it. It's all about personal taste but if you like sense i would recommend Leedroid to start with.
2. When you come form 2.1 you will need to upgrade your Radio, if you OTA upgrade to 2.2 before rooting you do not have to update your radio but you can. A link to the radio thread is also in the above link.
3.
Once you are rooted with unrevoked you can preform a nandroid form recovery or you can download Rom Manager from the market and backup via that.
If you just want to backup apps you can use titanium backup or you could sync your apps with appbrain and reinstall them.
About the ext partition, i think swap is not necessary and if you want a 1 gig partition use Gparted
Thank you very much for the answer.
I will look into those first.
If I found any trouble, I will ask you guys again.
Thank you again.
First, I wanna say thank you again.
I have read some review about the LeeDroid. It sounds very good.
I will pick LeeDroid as my first after market rom.
I will thus flash (.zip files are already downloaded in the PC) :
Leedroid 2.2e
Latest Radio ROM; 32.48.00.32U_5.11.05.27
LeeDroid 2.2e Kernel Boot Fix (Just to be sure, because I don't how my desires proc can be OCed)
DSP Manager.
My last questions:
- Is there any particular order which rom I should flash first?
Example : LeeDroid - Radio - Kernel Fix - DSP manager
-Can I flash them all with only 1 reboot (flash everything and choose reboot only once in H-Boot recovery menu)? or Do I have to flash only one at a time, reboot, and flash the next one and reboot again?
I'm not sure about radio's.
But if you flash leedroid 2.2e you need to flash it and after it (without reboot) flash the bootfix kernel.
Addons and theme's should be flash after the first full boot.
that is the correct order
you must flash the rom first, reboot, then flash the rest all in one go. REMEBER the first reboot is important!!
Got it!
Radio (I need the radio rom cause my radio rom is old, belongs to original 2.1) , Leedroid main rom and Kernel Fix in one go, then 1st reboot.
And then the other addons in one go.
and of course reboot again.
Thanks a lot guys!

check here for improved gaming performance, you can download leedroid kernel with boot fix, SD speed fix and GPU driver patch http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=825304
h3llb3nd4 why is it important to reboot after rom flash?
It needs to install the boot images for the Rom.

lots of things came up to me this weekend, I am not able to flash my Desire.
Since I am doing this for the first time, I would like to have a quite time for myself alone, so that I am calm during the flashing just in case if something went wrong.
well...I will do it (I hope) on next friday evening...
I will write again the progress next week.
Untill now all I have done is the rooting via Unrevoked3, and installing the rom manager from android market. I haven'T even formatted the sd card.
Thanks again.
OK, Go to hell with quiteness.
I can not wait hehehehe just to anxious to start flashing.
and.....
I did it...it works...
Thank you
Flashing is not that hard...hehehehe...
I have played with LeeDroid and I have to say...This can do a lot more than the original.
Hmmm...I a fan of Sense although some say it slows down the phone.
I have tried the HTC HD ROM on my Desire, I like the new sense but too bad the camera still doesn't work. I have to go back to LeeDroid just because of the camera problem.
|OP|,
I joined this forum because I am a newbie just like you (before you got your Jedi-Flashing Wings).
I too have a HTC Desire running Android 2.2 (Kernel 2.6.32.15). I have exactly the same problem as you had - I've run out of room for apps on internal memory and the standard Froyo apps2sd thing can't shift anything else to the SD card.
I'm really interested to learn how your phone handles apps now. Does your phone think it has 1 gig of internal memory? Are you able to shift every app to the SD card? Did you have to give up your HTC apps and widgets?
I would really appreciate any feedback.
Cheers!
Yup...limited room for installing apps is my main or perhaps my only reason of flashing my desire with modified rom.
- About the 1GB thing, well I didn't do it since I wanna try the flashing procedure just as it is described in youtube desire rom flashing guide (not confident enough to do it all alone), and it is shown in youtube using only 512MB
But, I will try it later (planned on december after I finish my university assignment).
-Well, I have flashed and used it only for about a day or two, so I am still not 100% sure, but all the apps I have downloaded and installed are all going to the SDCard. I guess all of them will eventually go to the SDCard.
-HTC Apps and widgets? Everything is there, as far as I noticed until now.
Now, I am enjoying the DSP equalizer, apps to SDCard (16GB ), but still afraid of OCing.
SMS, WLAN, Camera, E-Mail, etc. seem to work smooth, no bugs found so far.
My Desire seems to run faster than with the original rom, but it is just my subjectiv comparison.
The phone won't 'see' your EXT partition but when you install apps the quoted storage will barely go down...I have a 1GB EXT3 partition on my SD card for when I use a custom ROM, its 16GB so I don't miss the space as I'm on a stock ROM at present and don't use many apps

If the storage are going down or used slowly, is it worth to have 1GB as EXT3 or just leave it be at 512MB?
Depends on the ammount of unneccessary apps you plan to install

Hahahahahahaha....
You got that one right on the spot.
Most of my apps are games.
Games are not considered as necessary apps.
I will stick with 512MB
Thanks EddyOS and |OS|,
This sounds awesome! I've got 14 MB remaining on my internal memory and a long list of apps I still want to play with.
With this news I'm going to jump into the whole flashing/rooting thing (incidently why do both of these terms have sexual overtones?).
LeeDroid here I come!
|O2| did you use the Unrevoked root method? Could you possibly post the youtube link that you mentioned? I am, as you were, quite anxious about turning my beloved Desire into an expensive paperweight so any extra tips would be very appreciated. (I have heard that it is fairly simple and has a very low risk but I'm still a bit hesitant)
Thanks again! What a wonderfully helpful community this is!

Need Help!!

Hey
I apologize if a thread like this has appeared before, but i have just about had it with playing about with my desire after i tryed to flash a new ROM, il try and explain is as best detail as i can, and hopefully, one of you will be able to help me get back to normal, as im tearing my hair out over this now...
So...Last night, i noticed that LeeDroid (The custom rom i use) had updated his firmware to 3.0, and in the interest of keeping my phone upto date, i went ahead, downloaded the rom, put it on my SD, did a nandroid backup, wiped and flashed as i would normally
the install seemed to go fine, but when i rebooted the phone, it hung on the HTC screen for about 15-20 mins, so i figured the flash hadnt worked, so i went back, wiped again and restored my backup
this is where the issues begin, the bacup restores fine, BUT, when the phone reboots and loads up, ALL of my apps etc have gone, no longer apparently anywhere on my SD card (which is where most of them were stored) I now had a bare bones android, with no apps (not even market, as that was updated manually too)
at this point, i start to panic, i have seemingly lost everything off the phone (apart from the SD backup i had performed before), and only have a bare bones version of the LeeDroid rom i was using before, with no apps what so ever
so, i thought, i might as well start afresh, so i boot back into recovery, wipe again and re-flash a fresh Leedroid rom, which seemingly again, goes fine, but again, hung on boot
getting more worried still, my SD-EXT then stops mounting, giving me an error, so i re-partition it, format it, and try again, and again, it still hangs on boot
at this point, i realize im screwed, and just restore the bare bones backup i had saved on my computer (nandroid), which at least allows the phone to boot and be semi-usable
i have no idea what im doing wrong here, nothing wants to flash anymore, it just hangs, and i cant even seem to un-root the phone, all the RUU's i use just give me a "CUSTOMER ID ERROR" which i have no idea how to fix
can anyone PLEASE point me in the right direction, im panicing here, i cant seem to get anything to work, and i have been going around in circles for almost 7 hours now...
thanks very much
Looks like you'll need to start from sguare 1 again. Seems like the SD issue, might have corrupted the SD card.
My suggestion, is that you format the sd card (backup all files to the pc)
Create a new gold card again.
Flash to stock again if need be, then root.
You can download googleapps and flash it also. There are some downloadable links in this site you can save to your sd card. Or you can download it at cyanogenmod.com (where I downloaded mine I believe).
i thought going back to square one would be the way forward too, except that i cant seem to find an RUU that will work, as i mentioned, all of the ones i have tryed give me the CUSTOMER ID error, which i have no idea what to do with...
so, im a little stumped..
Your Gold Card is good? Better re-do it again. Because if your partitions blew away on your SD card, it probably cooked all of it.
You shouldn't have any problems finding a stock froyo ROM.

i have a stock froyo RUU, should i apply the goldcard, then try the update again then?
im new to this, so im probably going to need taking through all this
edit: so i made my SD into a goldcard. and now it wont mount on the phone, and when i run the RUU, it still gives me the CID error..
im going insane here, someone help >.<
ok, i got it
after doing some reasearch, i found that alot of people were saying that the phone needed to be S-OFF to flash it correctly
so, after reading up, and S-OFFing, i wiped, partitioned and flashed...
and, finally, after 9 hours of tinkering, errors etc, it has flashed and booted
this can be locked now, thanks
partitioned th sd card,
works sometimes, but glad we could somewhat lead you in the right direction, by proxy........
Little puzzeled by the s-off, but hey, it's fixed!!!

Custom rom + A2SD -> SD card malfunction -> Unable to boot/recovery

Hello. I need your advise!
Situation:
Some time ago, i was using leedroid 3.x and it was very satisfactory
However, at one day, it said like "No SD card detected" at notification bar,
and I rebooted, it just looped Leedroid booting screen
Went to recovery, reflashed, factory reset, delete data all, new SD, no SD, did everything i can, however whatever rom i put in there it just looped booting screen
I went to HTC service center they somehow they fixed my phone although they knew i rooted mine.
Question:
1. Is this a well known problem? I just went to service center and living in fear because of my ignorance? I searched some articles about brick however couldn't find matching cases with me.
2. If not, I suspect that the custom rom "moved" some vital system files on SD, therefore any rom couldn't boot. How realistic my suspicion?
3. Most importantly, how can i prevent this? my phone was practically bricked and it was a pure luck i could get service.. and this time i flash a custom rom, i dont want to live in fear..
That's all. Thanks in advance !!
1. not sure how widespread it is, but sounds like sd card malfunctioning more than phone problem, or possible USB brick.
2. you're correct. Leedroid 3.x roms move parts to sd-ext. this is why new sd or no sd wouldnt boot. sd card has to be correctly partitioned using 4ext recovery (requires s-off) or gparted. do not use minitool and/or rom manager
3. don't know, at a minimum proper partitioning as stated above. it wasn't bricked at all because you could get to recovery. you probably could have flashed RUU, s-off and rooted again using revolutionary. in future, for any troubleshooting, consult bortak's guide stickied to top of Q&A.
Thank you! I WILL Consult FAQ in XDA if something like that happen again.
(though at that time I didn't know about XDA T.T)
(not to mention i am struggling with so many acronyms and jargons going around here..)
And please if you can clear up one more thing for me..
So if the leedroid and/or any future custom rom i want to install, move some system file to SD card, and the SD card goes wrong,
same boot-looping happens, then
Go to recovery
Flash RUU (<- i searched and i think RUU means offical stock rom.. )
- This process restore system files and therefore go back to the state before rooting, so the phone can boot however it is not rooted
Root again since the phone is now a reborn virgin
Flash new custom room or whatever
Is this the logic behind reviving process? Did i understand correctly? I read the sticky article at the beginning of the forum, but i could not understand the full meaning behind troubleshooting process written there..
Thank you in advance!

the troubleshooting guide has saved many people, takes time to understand it all. it's easy to panic when the phone is not booting
RUU should be your last resort, because you lose all your data. keep your contacts backed up to google, and have a recent nandroid backup saved on your PC just in case. but yes RUU is a stock unrooted firmware for you to start fresh.
in your case i would have:
- made a nandroid backup in recovery
- backed up the sd card to PC
- reformatted and repartitioned the sd card (4ext or gparted)
- restored nandroid
not all roms move system files to sd card, check each rom's requirements in the first post (hboot, sd-ext partition size), or search the thread.

[Q] Some desire questions

Hello,
I am new to the rom and root thingy, but I managed to get my desire rooted with Unr3voked. That was running fine and with no problems. A few months ago I wanted a custom ICS rom, so I found one (Sandvolds one). I searched around the internet because I didn't know how to do it . I discovered I needed to have S-OFF but I hadn't. So I rooted my desire again using Revolutionary, and it was S-OFF. Then I downloaded the ROM and installed it using Clockworkmod. It installed fine, I put back my back up and it was running smoothly (Beta 0.8 btw). For a couple months it runned perfect, and I had no reason to update, so I didn't read the changelog and such things (yeah i know stupid). Now, whenever I try to install an app that needs to be in the internal memory, it says: Error. Not enough space (or something, I am dutch). This wasn't really a problem though, because I pretty much had every app i wanted on the internal memory. But I deleted whatsapp per accident and it won't let me install it again . For some reason deleting Boat Browser worked, but only for whatsapp. I actually want to update youtube and such so I want it actually to work again. Another question: are the updates of the ROM worth updating? Because i don't feel like doing it all again if there isn't a real reason. If so, how do I update it? So that i don't need to wipe everything, or do i have to install it again (with wiping).
I love the rom though!
Timo
PS: is it normal that for the camera to work the free SD card space must be at least 100 MB?
Anyone?
Did you create a second partition on your sd card? Run the a2sd script afterwards to extend the internal memory as described in the first post of the ROM's thread.
I dont't use sandvold's rom, I use Dk_zero_cool's rom, so I dont know whether the rom is worth upgrading;
but if you decided to do so, you can backup almost everything with titanium backup and do nandroid backup in recovery, so if you are not satisfied with the update, you can go back to you current rom.
You problem should by solved, as jhl80 has written, by creating ext4 partition on you sd card....
You could also try http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1813745 , there is disc manager built into the rom
And if you stay with the new rom, then use titanium to recover you apps+data.
Thx for the replys. Is this (pielmeier.blogspot.nl/2012/07/installing-apps2sd-for-htc-desire.html?m=1.) how you create a ext4 partition? I Will stay with 0.8 because there are some problems in 0.18! (Losing root acces).
Which a2sd script should i use then? I already have backups.
