Root Methods - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

I recently purchased an s3 and I'm a bit confused about the different methods I've seen for rooting.
Is one method preferred to another?
I'm learning how different this phone is from the evo 4g I've been using for the past 2.5 years.

This thread has a lot of answers to almost everything you may want to know

Easiest way to root is to use Odin and install your custom recovery and then the team epic root zip. Just make sure you install all the drivers for your phone first

Not sure if ur a techy or not... I am not. I purchased a program called one click root. I may be made fun of because I paid money but that's what I was comfortable with.

Being made fun of is better than having a "brick"! When I got mine I didn't want to take time to study up (coming from HTC) so I did the same....

Thanks. Those one click programs usually scare me more than the step by step methods.
I'm not worried about which is easier, just if there is a preffered method. I believe I have found my answer after reading FAQ again and watching the videos linked from it.
Thanks again.

I know I'm late to the party, but here's my two cents:
As far as I'm aware, all of the various guides (and toolkits) actually use the same method (although, the toolkit does have a tendency to bork the wifi). It's just really the packaging they come in. Whenever I recommend a guide to people, I always link this guide by Skunk Ape. It's intuitive and explains each step quite well, with pictures and clear instructions. I've never had someone come back to me asking for clarification after reading that guide.
Hope you enjoy your rooted phone!

Gotta say.....so far these s3 forums seem really friendly. Thanks for all the advice guys.....really digging this phone and forum so far

If this was the evo 4g forum and I started a thread like this some dude with 20 posts would have already flamed me and called me a noob......hahaha

Welcome to the Sprint forums! We're generally nice people. The only time you really see the ugly side is if you flash an international Rom to your phone (which bricks it, btw). That's when the sarcasm comes out.
Just stick to Roms made for our phones (d2spr, not i9300) and you'll be fine!

So after researching roms and reading/.watching reviews, it seems that blazer is closest to stock minus all the bloat/samsung stuff that is loaded by default. Is this correct, or would u guys recommend a different rom for a STOCK experience +tweaks/-bloat.
I swear if I bought an htc phone I wouldn't be quite as clueless.

Everyone on here would probably recommend a different rom. I'm currently running msg&chubbz rom. It's pretty stock, does have a lot of features from gs4. Does have "minit settings" which allow you to change battery icon/color, clock color/location, and some others, but besides these changes its pretty stock. I was clueless to s-offing my brothers evo lte, but I got it eventually. HTC phones are a little more confusing to most people.
message brought to you by my GalaxyS3

I recommend trying the ones you like, all at least a weeks time then deciding for yourself. But since you asked TPR 'cough' 'cough'.....

For a truly stock ROM you can check out freezas thread. He has all the latest Sprint updates and so forth. You can't get any closer to stock than that. I also recommend TPR. They are really great over there.

Tpr and morphology is fantastic.
If want to see the ugly side the sgs3 forum, flash an international rom and ask why your phone is bricked.

Seems you're already rooted, but I have to give a shout-out for topherk pushing skunk ape's rooting guide. The guide is so well-written and gave me just what I needed (custom recovery and root). For someone new to rooting, it was the best IMO...

Rooting

If you are going to root, do not do like me and just start going on a rom rampage. To extend on that statement, I traded into this device and it was rooted... it was just a few days after the release so obviously no cure or stable rom at that point. Long story short... I have messed up and fixed a lot of things with this device already and it only cost me a few long nights and making my wife hate me. So that is why if you are going to root, make sure its worth it.

But I gotta ask, what happened during your ROM rampage?

heck even the first time i rooted my evo i noobed it up. but now im more into it than before. You will become a flash-aholic
And there are so many great roms, themes and mods out now...you can flash all day for a week and still not see everything.

You don't just "take a rom off". If you wipe the rom, your phone wont boot to anything. But you can easily just flash another rom, or restore your previous backup.
GOOD site for most roms on one page!!
http://evo4g.roms-db.com/all-builds/
Ran across the above site in research, used a rom off of it pretty cool plus anything tie into XDA im for it!! Thanks
Flash-a-holics (not to be mistaken with streakers lol) is a known issue affecting men and women here in XDA. This is an incurable addiction. Common symptoms include:
Anxiety (don't believe me? Try flashing a radio update lol)
Stress (not knowing what to do when your phone boots and is stuck at the HTC EVO 4G screen lol)
Nagging from the wife (cuz you spend more time tweaking your phone instead of helping around taking care of the baby)
In EXTREME cases, hypothetically speaking, if your house was on fire and you had a chance to retrieve one of the following items:
1) wedding album
2) expensive art piece
...you would write in:
3) my precious Evo lol

He wasn't trying to be a jerk. The best thing you can do is research read and search some more, and do it all over again. There are plenty of ppl here that will help. First off it is really hard to mess up your phone to the point of not being able to fix it. Most important now that you are rooted is to make a nandroid backup it will save you phone. Good luck and happy flashing

When I was a noob, it wouldn't go near something like this unless I read that 200people have done it succesfully before me. I wouldn't even think of just flashing something unless it was cleary stated it was for my phone and had step by step instructions on what to do and I would confirm about 50x that it was for my phone before actually falshing it.
Now that I am no longer a noob and would like to consider myself a veteran at flashing, I even stay further away from these things. lol

+1 Back in 2009 when I first started modding (a Motorola Razr) I stumbled onto XDA. After getting my wizard 1st, and then my excalibur (t Mo Dash), I made sure I read everything thrice, even 4 times, before flashing. I was a lot more gung-ho back then. After totally bricking my Fender MT3G, I take more caution. I am super ocs now with my E4GT (best device I've ever owned), so I was just kidding about the guinea pig thing, lol.

DONT WANT A BRICK? Check here

As of right now, the roms for your S3 are not meant to be used on other S3 variants. Bricks might happens or a soft one might happen. Before flashing a Rom make sure you are in the right development section an you read the entire op, twice. Until other devs or experienced users find a way to make them cross compatible, please refrain from using other carriers S3 roms.
I am working on this so that all roms will work on all carriers

That's slick!:good:
hard brick - a pretty paperweight (tonight)
should have been more careful, soft bricked the phone, 2 times trying to change the dpi.
once trying to flash a rom - the rom flash, took it to QHSUSB_DLOAD mode, not impressed but i'll take this downtime as a time to relax.
Another way to avoid a brick; Don't use a mod, theme, tool or ROM until it's confirmed by multiple people in the community that it's working properly. Read the last 3-4 pages of a thread

I agree with you, I ended up with a soft brick stuck at the samsung glowing logo after trying to unroot because I got a crack the front plastic near the headphone jack. I managed to reset the flash counter and install the rom but odin failed at the end. Now I'm hesitant to flash another ROM. Anyone else here waiting for JellyBean Rom? Definitely take your time and always make sure your computer installs the drivers before doing anything! I got BB to exchange it for me since they couldn't get it to boot and the mystery crack wasn't my fault. I only had it for like 3 days IN A CASE TOO. Happy Flashing dudes.

After that go to the cyan thread and read the first 2 pages. Then go to q and a questions with anything leftover. 10 min of reading and you'll be way ahead of where you are now. Good luck

Just make sure you thoroughly read and follow the installation instructions for whatever ROM you are going to flash and always ask questions before you take any step you are unsure of. Don't take shortcuts or disregard any instructions.
There are so many people in this forum who are willing to help if only asked.
