Console emulators on Shield - Shield Themes and Apps

I really look forward to test different emus on the Shield: PSX, SNES and GBA. IMHO Shield will be the ultimate retro gaming machine without the need to hack/jailbreak it.

I will want root just to see how much we can push that tegra 4 and sixaxis controller app needs root to work.. since its got HDMI out on it, I can connect it to my TV in my room, sync the PS3 remote and game on!

Hm. Why won't just buy Ouya? For me portability is more important, so I'm jist planning to play on the Shield screen.

Because shield is way more powerful than OUYA perhaps?
Shields A15 core vs OUYAs A9 gives a huge boost in performance, the Shield is clocked higher and has way more GPU cores.
Someone will probably root the Shield pretty damn quick, sixaxis probably wont be a problem.

i wouldn't recommend an ouya to anyone right now as its a total joke. and unless boxer8 opens it up its less hackable then my GNII

I love my ouya. Dubwars, No Brakes Valet, Stalagflight, Polarity, and more really good games.
Also, if you enjoy local multiplayer games, you can't go wrong with the Ouya.

I own pretty much all of the emulators robert broglia developed and those are the main reason I want a shield. I also have the oid emulators but they are pretty old and not really supported anymore. This will be the best handheld emulating machine out there.
I can't wait to see how it runs playstation and N64 games.

My old Nexus 7 (tegra 3) ran PSX and N64 games PERFECTLY with a PS3 controller. This is a tegra 4. It will MURDER any emulator you throw at it.

I've been playing around with my roomates shield. It has some weird problems with emulators. For instance, the "Y" button is the menu key in android. So whenever I try to bind it to something in an emulator it opens the "menu" of the app instead. Not sure how to fix it.

For Super GNES, pressing Y doesn't trigger the menu by default.
but upon touching the menu soft button on the screen & pressing Y whilst in the menu, closes the menu.

That's called a "fallback". If the app isn't catching it when you're trying to assign the button, they somehow really messed up the app.
Fallback occurs when an app doesn't handle a button press. For instance, pressing B falls back to BACK if an app doesn't support the B button. Most controller-based apps do, though... :-/

The more I play the more a realize that there seems to be a slight audio delay in basically any emulator I use. The video quality is great, no stuttering or anything, but it seems like the audio is delayed like a fraction of a second on everything. Like in mega man on nes I push jump and he does the complete jump then I hear the sound or if I shoot the gun the sound comes after the bullet is halfway between his weapon and the edge of the screen.
In the SNES emulator I have tried there seems to be delay. I tested that in contra 3 using weapons.
In mupen64 or supern64 there is a delay which I have noticed playing majora's mask. Swing links weapon and he completes the swing before the weapon makes a sound or if you are running and do a roll, he has completed the roll before you hear the sound.
A quick google search returned a few recent results with similar experiences on various android devices. Anyway, it isn't a deal breaker and I hope it gets sorted at some point.

Even on PC emulators, one of their biggest challenges to overcome has been audio lag. Expect this... you're emulating a system.

The shield has REALLY nice speakers. To be honest, any game I'm emulating I've already played on the real version of the console before. (I own almost every classic console). So I just mute it and play music on most emulators. *shrug*

Doesnt help audio lag in emulators though.

So which acutal emulator apps are you guys using?
I havn't mess with emulation and want to try it out on the shield.

cant wait
This shield is a beast, in antutu benchmark it scored a massive 39,000 and I havent seen any mobile or tablet that scored that high yet, I have ordered mine and cant wait to get my hands on this. But I was wondering does anyone know if this supports any kind of mapping controls

This is a problem if the emulator is just mapping hardware buttons and doesn't understand controllers. I don't think there's a lot you can do in that case (except maybe hope they update the emulator). All the emulators I have installed work fine.

so far the best emulation and control support I found is:
Snes9x EX+
SuperN64
FPse ( the analog triggers wont map) can any1 find a better one? or Free 1?
PPSSPP (some games load but audio and some models are glitched)
and the dolphin emu is in alpha but i get nothing.<<<i would pay money for this one and the psp one
if they get them optimized for shield

Who says we need powerful GPUs? (OnLive available on android)

Something I posted in the Nexus S forums but thought this is quite fitting for Galaxy Nexus guys for obvious reasons...
Yes I understand GPUs are important for other things. Thread title is a joke. But check this out...OnLive . Basically OnLive is going to try running their services to tablets (doing the game computing in the cloud). I am totally willing to try this! Imagine xbox/ps3 like games on your tablet or even your phone.
I tried running the app on my OG Droid, but it just stays at the loading screen.
So I'm still a little confused on how it works.
are the games being computed on the device? or is it all being done on their servers and so the app acts as a VNC or a remote connection?

Lucky. I can't even find it on the market. From what I gather, OnLive does all the computing on their servers and sends it to your tablet so basically your tablet is just a screen with controls.
Think remote desktop but with heavy compression and geared for speed. It works fine in some games but probably not so great at reflex games or FPS. Onlive has been around for a while.

When I start games on OnLive it says that I have selected a game that requires controler and the game does not respond. Is there some virtual pad that could simulate controls on the screen? I would like to play games with onscreen controls, shadowgun way, rather than carry pad with my phone.

There are 3 different game types. Ones that require a keyboard/mouse, ones that require a game pad, and ones that are optimized for touch. Some games support all three, some support only two and some support only one. You need to find the games that support what hardware you have on hand. Obviously on a phone you're limited to touch and maybe some mouse based games.
I played Dirt 3, which of course is a very fast paced game, on my tablet the other day. It played just fine. No lag at all and very responsive. Only issue were the actual controls. Little hard to use the virtual controls for such a game.

GTA3 Runs beautifully!

Hey guys/gals, about 2 hours ago Rockstar released Grand Theft Auto 3 for android... and it runs GREAT on out A100's! Market Link and its 4.99 attached is photo of it running on my A100! Youtube video of it playing
confirmed. I used my sixaxis app to hook my ps3 remote to it and then the acer to the tv. It works if you remap all the controls. I havn't found a way to remap the punch/shoot button. So I can drive and get out of cars and even jump with the remote, but not shoot. If anyone figures it out please post.

No, just go the market and get it.
The game makes me remember so many good memories, the first and one of the best ever 3D games made!
The game runs even better then on the PS2/PC (No loading, or just around 15 seconds to load the game from the menu!!!)
The only thing I dislike is the car control, turning a car is the same as full throttle steering... (Simple left and right arrow)
Why did they do that
If only they would use the same pad for running to control the cars, I would play it even more then I do already!

It is good, but not the first 3D Game made, that honor goes to Monster Maze-
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3D_Monster_Maze
It debuted in 1981, I was 10 at the time It was followed closely by Dungeons of Daggorath in 1982- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dungeons_of_Daggorath .

A few questions regarding emulation

Not really about emulation, but the factors that affect it that google has no answer for.
1. I noticed the ouya gets very warm, not overheating but it makes me wonder if it's like my htc one where it throttles the gpu clock speed depending on temperature?
2. I run my games from a cheap usb stick; will games / movies run with better performance with a higher quality stick or if they are put in internal storage?
3. I heard that the overscan function does nothing. Maybe it's the update but mine fixes the aspect ratio perfectly, I'm just wondering if this has an impact on performance as well.
4. I've noticed at random on both ePSXe and FPSE (paid versions) flickering lines at the bottom of the screen. I have no more info on this but was curious to see if anyone else has the same problem. I was thinking it was some kind of interference since my ouya is next to lots of other eletronics. Or maybe if the overscan function has something to do with it.
I'm trying to make a perfect emulation storage box to replace my mass of tangled controllers, cables, and power strips in power strips for all my old consoles. If I find any useful info on these I'll post it, thanks!:fingers-crossed:
So the flickering lines only happen on hardware rendering mode, which is the best since software looks bad and opengl is too slow.
ePSXe doesn't have this issue on other android devices, the reason I use it over FPSE is the sound quality is much higher and more accurate.
The retroarch psx emulator is better imo than both epsxe and fpse except for the interface sux. That flickering thing drove me nuts on fpse menus but it didn't do it during gameplay for me.

I just spent a bunch of time configuring Retroarch, all for naught... Mednafen's Libretro doesn't boot, pscx-rearmed libretro doesn't load ff8 battles, and when launched in Nostalgia neither of them retain their settings. How is the xperia play faring better at emulating these games than a Tegra 3??

I was using it on the OUYA to play castlevania sotn and the psx version of chrono trigger and it was the only one that made the audio and video pretty close to perfect. It wasn't really expert advice or anything. Sorry man. I just pretty much plugged and played. Didn't spend too much time configuring stuff.

Which Bios number did you use? And did you select mednafen or rearmed? You're helping me a bunch, I just keep running into slight problems that lower the quality of my emulation, and I'm pretty picky when given so many options.
Rearmed was the one I liked. For bios I'm pretty sure I went with scph1001 although I'm not sure at the moment I'm not home. I also had been running the cm10 build back when I was playing those games but I don't know that it makes any difference except that it screwed up the chrono trigger cutscenes on fpse. Also I used tegra overclock to set GPU to 520mhz maybe that played a role in performance. I tried really hard to find a standalone apk for the rearmed emulator with no luck. I couldn't ever get the buttons to map correctly with retroarch on my ps3 controller which blew my mind. Had to use sixaxis controller and swap buttons around to get it to map properly, but it worked perfect with the OUYA controller right out of the box. I didn't play any other games aside from those two so there's also the issue of some games needing differing settings to work right. I just found what worked for my narrow set of expectations. I'm kinda getting the urge to mess with it some more, maybe I'll have some time this weekend to check out this nostalgia and revisit the performance of the different emulators.

Well Playstation-wise I got it working almost perfectly. I used schp1001 bios for rearmed libretro, selected that in nostalgia and made sure in the main retroarch settings to have no filter, and to save on exit (you must actually hit the exit button to save).
Here were my settings once I was in the retroarch game menu with a rom loaded:
Core Options: frameskip 0, dynamic recompiler enabled, interlacing mode enabled, enhanced resolutions enabled, frame duping off.
Settings -> video options: vsync off, Threaded driver on, whatever aspect ratio you want.
Settings -> video options -> Shader options: Default filter nearest, shader passes 1, shader#0 advanced-aa(under antialiasing), shader#0 filter nearest, shader#0 scale 1x.
After all that, save new config and quit retroarch. These settings gave me near opengl graphics better than the original and enough speed to clearly play Final Fantasy 9 and Legend of Dragoon. It looks and plays better than fpse and epsxe.
?? glad you got it working right. I wish some clever dev would build a better GUI for just the rearmed psx emulator that would be great.

I also found out that that screen flickering doesn't happen on ePSXe running software mode. Nobody else seems to have this problem though

Last post on this matter, epsxe and fpse flickering on screen is fixed by disabling hardware overlays in advanced -> developer options on the ouya..

1) It's possible, but I doubt it. I think it's pretty unlikely that a Tegra 3, which is designed for fanless use, would overheat with a heatsink and fan. Throttling is common with smartphones because of the lack of a fan.
2) Anything cartridge based will typically be small enough that transfer speed isn't an issue. Anything disc-based was expecting to be reading from an optical disc, so even a slow flash-based solution is going to be faster.

Something is wrong man. I can change the video settings, it asks me to reboot the game, and voilà.
As for the buttons it works perfectly.
I also cant change the video quality and also get the trigger fail when pressed all way down
I'm finding that it only shoots when the trigger is pressed all the way down, seems like a bug to do with the game not recognising it's an analogue controller? Shame, gameloft are always ridiculous with mapping controls (eg: making us use the bumpers in MC4)...

None of my devices are compatible, so I can't obtain the apk to sideload.
The only easy way is grabbing it from that one YouTube video, but only with an unlimited money mod.
It used to have an unmodified version, unless it is included still.

You would grab the Adreno download since that is the FireTV's GPU.
Be careful if you download on Windows.
The app is free but with IAP,and I really hope the unmodified apk is included.

I only have my K400r keyboard which works fine with Goat Simulator for Android including the built-in touchpad for onscreen analog movement.
If only they would fix it by adding gamepad support and ditching the REQUIREMENT of touchscreen controls.
It SHOULD play nearly identical to the console versions (it at least looks nearly as good),but they neglected to support gamepads.

I'm quite disappointed with Mortal Kombat X. It's nothing like the previous MK games. more of a tap fest than a real fighter. The graphics are awesome though. I don't think I'll waste the space to have it on my FTV.

WTF is wrong with gamedevlopers these days??
they took away THE element of this game and just transported the graphics.
it really feels like they dont know whats about gaming and fun is at all and concentrate only on graphics and senseless effects.
this feeling you have already on the console versions (way to much weapon/magic tricks) but hey still ok thanks to the wast amount of keykombos you gotta learn.
but this android version is just pure garbage. no controllersupport means this game is useless. its effortless blood and magic mania

This is more of a card game masquerading as a fighting game. Not bad, if that's the type of game you want to play, but it should be advertised as such.Fighting games are hard on tablet systems such as Android and Ipad. The interface just doesn't work well for multiple button movements. It's lacking the tactile feel of buttons.
