Micro usb will charge but doesn't recognize that it is plugged into a computer - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

The phone charges fine but when connected to a computer it doesn't recognize that it is. It isn't rooted or anything it isn't running a custom rom. has anyone had this issue? has my micro usb port simply worn out?

I had a Nexus 4 that exhibited the same problem. I believe the micro usb simply can not endure the repetitive insertion and exertion of the usb cable. The mini usb standard was much more robust, at least physically.

look in the charging port to see if there is any gunk in there. clean it out if there is

I have the same problem.
I have tried a different port and computer as well.
I used the same cord for the wall charger and connecting to the PC.
When I connect it to the wall charger, it works fine.
However, when I connect it to the PC, nothing happens.
The phone won't even recognize that it's being charged.
It won't even show a message...
Anyone have a solution or know why?

[Q] dual usb cable to overcome pc usb limitation possible?

Would a dual usb cable work to get a faster charge from a pc or other device that has more than one usb port available?
Something link amazon item number B00439567Q
Typically these are used with hard drives to overcome this limitation, so I'm wondering if it would have the same effect on the Galaxy Nexus.
Link referred to by OP: http://www.amazon.com/StarTech-com-...567Q/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1330558360&sr=8-1
Probably not. The nexus isn't really a hard drive, it's more like another computer, and you typically can't connect pc to pc via USB... The limitation is that the sd is actually a virtual sd, and you're actually connecting to the whole OS via USB...
You're better off mounting a stick drive and then using that to transfer files to your PC...

Guess you didn't read his post... He's talking about using dual USB for power.
OP, I think it'd work. USB only puts out 500mA, so putting 2 together would improve charging times more like a wall charger that does 1A. No guarantee how the PC would handle it though.
Is your phone not charging from a USB port? Because mine does... Slowly, but it does...
What about USB 3 it has a lot more power.

From what I have read usb3 is .8a while a single usb2 is .5a. So .3 more a. Unfortunately I have no usb3 hosts, so that not an option.
Anyway thanks martonikaj, I will change my cables and hopefully get a more timely charge.
Unless you short the data wires on the usb cable or use a kernel that has full usb charging enabled it won't matter how many ports you use. The phone detects the data connection and reduced charging to the slow charge to prevent overloading a pc usb port.

Maybe flash a kernel that has the USB Fast Charge mod enabled?

How can I tell if my USB port is busted or my phone is corrupted? Only charges now.

Charging over USB works fine no matter the cable or the connection but it no longer will show up in Windows on any PC as a device. I tried flashing roms, changing cables, and doing the usb fix with Terminal listed in the sticky but it doesnt connect or will it know it's connected to a PC.
Can the port be broken so data no longer works but charging does?

I have tried 3 which is why I wonder if my phone is broken, but it charges fine.
On all PCs the charge light comes on the phone with no problems but with all of them none of them detect a USB device being plugged in.,
Even in recovery if I do a USB-MS mount nothing happens.
Can the usb port break so that it charges with no issue but wont connect to a PC?

I think the solution to your problem can be found in this fix
The USB port on my Evo 4G will charge but won't show up as as a device on my laptop. If I hold the USB cable at an angle, though, it does show up. I think mine is busted, maybe that's the case for yours.

Do you think the cable is busted or the phone? I have tried multiple cables on multiple PCs and nothing happens.
So then it is possible for the phone to be unable to connect but still charge fine?

Have you tried mounting when in Recovery?
It really sounds like your cable is weird. The power lanes are on the edges for USB, meaning that the port on the phone is probably physically fine. The cable, however, is vulnerable to damage on any one of the four wires.
If nothing works, then perhaps something internal is busted. What do you need to transfer from your computer? Perhaps you can do it by connecting to your computer through WiFi for mounting the SD card and adb?
Its your USB port on you phone, theres 2 pins or smoething broken inside your phone thats causing the problem. I had the same problem on my Evo were it wouldnt connect as a storage device and would go into car dock mode. I took it to sprint and showed them the problem and they replaced my phone. As long as you dont have any physical damage such as the screen being cracked you should be fine and they should replace it free of cost.
Make sure that your cable is not one of those charge only, car charger type cables. Typical car charging cables don't transfer data.

Yeah, that's pretty much it. If I wiggle it just the right way the computer will see something but it will go away as fast as it shows up. Doubt Sprint will do anything as the phone is a few years old, I dropped the protection plan, and it's rooted to heck.
I'll just keep it running until this fall and upgrade when the new Nexus line comes out.
Hopefully.

Many OTG peripherals require the use of a powered USB hub as the Kindle needs power assistance in the USB department. The app "Stick Mount" has rendered success with accessing some flash drives. Unfortunately not ALL flash drives are compatible.

i tried that app and nothing happens. it has a diagnostic tool also and it recognizes the flash drive.. but with no success.
if i need external power for a hub, then this entire thing is pointless.

If that app picks it up than a powered USB hub will probably make it work. For example....I tried using an optical USB mouse that was plugged straight into the OTG cable plugged straight into the Kindle. The mouse actually lite up BUT nothing happened besides that. When I obtained a powered hub it worked great using the same OTG cable with hub. What ROM are you using just out of curiousity?
I am using the 4.2.1_r1 AOSP ROM.
the thing is that I don't want to be dependant on elecricity. there isn't a plug every where. thank you for the time spent on my question
maybe should a nexus 7 and forget about it.

Well if you don't want to be dependent on electricity there is a different method people have used for a USB power supply. Here is a Youtube link that should explain it, or you could just get a Nexus 7 lol http://m.youtube.com/#/watch?v=BFEMh0ZYT5M&desktop_uri=/watch?v=BFEMh0ZYT5M

Only 4gb but I'd prefer to carry around a few on a ring than a powered hub, or that arrangement with the Y cable and the phone charger.
Plug it directly into the otg cable and off you go, I've played 720p video from the flashdrive with several ROMs recently, paranoid android worked great, TWA_priv's 4.2 also works but with some mounting wackiness sometimes.
USB mass storage watcher seems better than stickmount right now IMO.
Would the 8gb cruzer switch work? I am planning on buying an OTG Cable and need to specify.

Sure it will work, but you'll need a wired hub of some sort to mount it, either connected to an outlet or using a Y cable and a battery powered phone charger, which is hassle to carry, finicky to mount and not really OTG. I've never found a drive over 4 gb which was usable just by sticking it into the end of the otg cable, and most drives 4 gb or under don't work either.
The cruzer 4gb is my one and only recommendation I'm afraid.
I know this thread is a little old but just wanted to list the mini attache 16gig flash works with no powered hub.
Downside is that it only works till about 70% of battery. After that its not enough voltage
Plug it into the kindle, then plug in the flash drive.

Can you detail which app you used to mount it? I've tried quite a few of them but stick with USB otg helper and USB mass storage watcher.

USB cable replacement

The USB cable that came with my nexus 5 is starting to get frayed. From previous experience connecting the phone to my laptop I know that not all USB cables are alike in their data capabilites.
Where can I purchase another USB cable that is an adequate replacement of the Asus one?
Most here (and myself) will lead you to the Monoprice Premium USB cables. They are full bandwidth and very affordable.
Thank you. You mean like the attached image? Are they as full band as the original nexus 5 cable?

Have you had any trouble connecting to a laptop with this cable? I had to switch from the stock cable because it wouldn't stay connected to my PC laptop. It would connect/disconnect constantly. I have been using my old HTC One S cable for the past year because it works perfectly, but it's on it's last legs.

I haven't tried it myself but others in this forum haven't had problems.
That's why I was asking before buying. They all work for charging but some USB cables have problems connecting to a Windows laptop, especially in windows 7. I used to have trouble connecting to my laptop when I did not use the Asus cable that came with the nexus.
After the original cable supplied with my Nexus 5 stopped working, I started using the cable that came with my old Xperia S and that works just fine for charging and working with adb/fastboot.
