Rooting GS3 - T-Mobile, Samsung Galaxy SIII

So I know how to root the device, I'm just having a few problems. First, my laptop isnt recognizing my phone in download mode. Is there a driver I need to install for the phone? Second, odin isnt opening on my laptop either. It has worked many many times before but right now when I open it, it shows this box that says "odin (little boxes next to it)" and an "okay" button. Once I click the "okay" button" It quickly opens and closes odin not allowing me to do anything.
Can someone help me out a little?

Try drivers and Odin from my signature.

It said i had those drivers installed already, but I did them again anyway. And those are the 2 versions of odin I've always used, but I'm going to download yours and try them also. Thanks, and I'll let you know if they work.
Odin is acting the same way as mine did. I'm pretty sure somethings up with my laptop. I'll try restarting it or playing with its settings to see whats going on.

He you tried all the usb ports? I know it sounds stupid but my phone is only recognized on 1 out of 3 usb ports on my desktop.
My ipod and other things work on all usb ports but my phone only gets recognized on one.

TRY THIS...
Try to uninstall to the drivers and reinstall them, then get the latest ODIN for the s3. And try to root. If that doesnt work. Use a different computer like your friends. .

Alright thanks I got it now. I'm not a nube, just need to get used to how everything works around here coming from the epic 4g.
I got the latest recovery from rom manager. is there an option to usb mount sd card from recovery?
I noticed your ROMs are huge. I downloaded universeS4 and its almost 1GB? thats crazy the biggest rom ive ever used was 185mb. Anyway, any other Roms you guys recommend i try? I'm looking for TW at the moment so no Cyanogen roms. And what kind of tweaks and mods are there to look for in a ROM? i need something similar to voodoo sound.

There is a thread stickied in the themes and app section that has a whole lot of mods. It should be the fist post in their

Thanks, I seen it. There is so many things.
I'm mostly interested in sound volume hacks and mods. I flashed univers4 ROM and it comes with the ACID thing for sound but I dont really know whats it doing. I'm used to having voodoo sound which is enabled from the kernel. Is there any mods that actually allow you to override the system settings for at least headphone volume? I want my phone as loud as can be lol.

[Q] Unroot without Odin - USB Device not recognized

I'm having an issue with my t989 that has persisted since I stopped using Kang's ROMs and the Bullet Kernel.
After going from the Juggernaut ROM to Darkside's ICS when it came out, my phone started to not be recognized by any computer, be it OSX or Windows. I've tried everything on the PC software side, from clearing Kies and the Samsung Drivers, as well as clearing registry information and re-installing both separately, and this has not helped at all. The windows error is:
Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)
I don't use antivirus, and I don't use a firewall, suffice to say I'm a programmer and have plenty of experience in doodling with phones, and I'm stumped. I've come to the conclusion that the Bullet Kernel installed from my Juggernaut days is the cause of the issue, as I repeated the process on a friend's device and he has the exact same symptoms.
With this situation, I'm not able to access ODIN to return to complete stock, so I can't flash over the Bullet Kernel. Alongside the USB device not recognized problem, I also was not able to get into ODIN / download mode until I made my own USB Jig to get around it.
Is there any way to get back to the stock kernel without ODIN? Would Mobile Odin Pro work if Chainfire added support for our device? It's really pissing me off as I'm a software developer and can't use my own device to build to.
EDIT: As a note, when moving from Juggernaut / Bullet to Darkside, I flashed the appropriate ICS radio and kernel, but when returning to 2.3.5 stock from Samsung, somehow the Bullet kernel managed to persist.
edit: nvm you answered my question.
Im not aware of a way to unroot without Odin Can you get into recovery?
Hey, not sure if this will help, but there's links to flashable stock zips in this thread:

There is still a way to get back to the Stock ROM ( 2.3.5 ) and Recovery, but the kernel flash was not included with the package:
http://galaxys2root.com/t-mobile-galaxy-s2/how-to-unroot-t-mobile-galaxy-s2-sgh-t989/
This is apparently the "Zedomax" unroot that does not need the ability to hook up to Odin, so needless to say, it's not unrooting that I need, it's getting back to the stock kernel that is the problem.
Obviously now that I'm unrooted, there really isn't a way for me to install Mobile Odin Pro even if I had it. I've been looking how to contact him to request it, because I don't want to be rude and PM him the request when I'm sure that's not the way that respected XDA members would want.
Can I ask why you think the kernel alone isn't being overwritten? That seems odd to me, since every ROM packs its own kernel, and flashing a kernel specifically only replaces the kernel. So if you flash an ICS ROM you're getting an ICS kernel, GB you get a GB kernel, etc. It wouldn't work otherwise. If you haven't done it already, you might want to try Darkside super and cache wipes.

Well, for one, I get a Bullet loading screen... Apparently reading through other threads, it's a known issue that Zedomax's Stock ROM method doesn't include the kernel, which basically means I may have f'ed myself permanently seeing as how I can't get ODIN access. Unfortunately, galaxys2root.com didn't tell people on their site that it didn't include the kernel, so needless to say, I'm never going to that site again and I would advise people not to follow any of their stuff either.
Although it's a small omission, their lack of providing information has just caused me to possibly lose a moddable phone.
EDIT: the threads that I've been reading through are the ones you supplied, RTFOP
So can you not get into download mode or get your computer to recognize your phone in recovery? If you're willing to tinker some you can back track and root and reinstall and overwrite that kernel and then circle back.

Well, to re-hash over what I've said already for clarification's sake:
1. I can get into download / ODIN mode
2. I still CANNOT get my phone to recognize in recovery. I know it's not my PCs, it's the phone, and I suspect the Bullet Kernel as it was not reverted back to the stock kernel when I flash Zedomax.
With that said, I don't see how it's possible for me to root and get CWM seeing as how I'm on stock Recovery (3e), and I can't ODIN. Unless there is a untethered way to root the t989, I think i'm up ****'s creek.
At what point did you lose root access though?

The whole point of flashing Zedomax's .zip is to unroot and go back to stock Samsung 2.3.5.
Just to verify, I downloaded root checker and it states I do not have root access.
So if you can get into Odin with your jig workaround, why can't you load a custom recovery and super user and then run Darkside wipes and install whatever ROM you want?

I think there's a fundamental misunderstanding between you and I. When I say I can get into download / Odin MODE, that means I can force the phone itself into ODIN Mode, but since my computer does not recognize my t989, the ODIN application on my windows box does not recognize the phone, and the ID box does not 'turn yellow' as it should if my phone were recognized by my PC.
So even though my phone is waiting for the ODIN application on my windows to send it commands, I can't send it commands because the application won't recognize the phone.
Thus is my quandary.
Yeah, sorry, I didn't get that. Have you tried plugging it in without the sd card in? It's kind of a long shot, but errors on there might be keeping your computer from communicating with the device, since it seems to be working otherwise. Maybe the jtag repair service through mobile tech videos?

ok so last night I decided to try out the encryption option on my t mobile t999 and all went like it was supposed to. It rebooted a couple times like it said it would then when it rebooted to put in pin I entered the pin it started decrypting. I left it for 4 hours well it wouldn't work so I pulled battery and retried and left it go well it hung for hours. I proceeded to try a factory reset and it kept failing at the /data "cannot mount"... I tried wiping the internal SD it too failed. so now im trying to odin the "official stock" image it keeps getting hung at the "NOH-HLOS.bin" for HOURS anyone with anything please help me out
Can you boot into the system at all? If so can you install any apps?
Are you rooted?
If yes to all try Mobile Odin to flash, may be able to work around the problem....im not sure.
Otherwise try using goo or rom manager to install recovery and then flash another rom.
Not sure any of thatll work, just some suggestions.

Don't ever use ROM MANAGER

I have used rom manager in the past just to boot into recovery... I don't know why but for what ever reason, today I decided I was going to update to the latest AOKP, I launched ROM MANAGER to check which version of clockwork I had installed, it said I had the latest so I chose the option to reboot into recovery, phone turned off I thought it was going to reboot into recovery but it never turned back on. I can't get my phone to power on, I also can't get it to go into download mode. No signs of life... Looks like phone shopping time. And I did do some research on this and seems I am not the only person this has ever happened to.

Yea I honestly think developers of new roms should block access to Rom Manager it is obviously buggy and for what ever reason it CAN brick phones just by trying to reboot to recovery... who knows how that is even possible. A reboot should not brick a phone it doesn't make sense to me... so rom manager must be doing something crazy when trying to boot into recovery unless someone knows how I can get my phone to download mode it honestly seems bricked.
So you were on clockwork recovery?

Yes clockwork mod recovery was installed... I have used it numerous times with this phone to flash roms etc... the problem isn't with clockwork mod, but the app ROM MANAGER that you can use to flash clockwork mod recovery and also use to boot into clockwork mod recovery.

Maybe using adb you can delete everything and then Odin back. Just an idea. I've never truly bricked so no real experience except knowing that if you can connect through adb you may have a chance.
Excellent luck to you. This almost qualifies as a development article.
More like a :Notice: of some under development. Good for others to know.. I my self in the past have used the cwm.APK to reboot many of times so maybe its the ROM plus cwm combo that caused this problem. Again, just speculating.

I use ROM manager all the time. All I do on it is flash the latest official CWM though. I never download or.flash ROMs off of it. I think that this mishap was specific to your situation. My PC doesn't recognize it at all nothing... are drivers needed in order to get to download mode? I just installed windows 8 via update and kept all my old settings, before this happened this morning I was able to access my phone and everything like normal in windows 8... just curious if you can get to download mode by hooking it up to a wall charger and the volume buttons... Just to see if the phone will even get to download mode. I have tried volume down, volume up and down, power volume up and down... nothing is working doesn't make any sense.

T989 comes up as an option to install clockwork mod recovery. Again I have used it for a long time but have never installed a rom through it... just used it to flash clockwork and have booted to recovery a few times. Usually I would boot to recovery the manual way but since I was already in Rom Manager to check clockwork mod version I just tried to reboot into clockwork from there since I was already there.

Thanks for your help. I am so rush for it, did not check what version it was. It said the newest version then i installed it. Damnnnn, my note 2 is just perfect. If I hard brick my phone for this stupid reason, I am very upset.
Besides, I saw a RED light keep flashing at the upper right corner. Dont know what it means. Properly, it mean....to get the new phone LoL
First off, obvious question- is it charged? Have you pulled the battery & then tried restarting yet? Also, when you plug it in to your computer, does the computer recognize it or give an error? My GSII got bricked by TWRP & it wouldn't do anything at all either, and when I plugged it in my comp it gave me a "driver not found" error.
Either way, even you ARE bricked, all you have to do is call Samsung. Tell them you were using your phone when all of a sudden it shut off and won't turn back on & they can unbrick it for you. I had my GSII back in a week, working like new.
hahaha thank you bro. I did take battery out and in so many times. Hooked up to PC and nothing is working. I will give Sammy a call today. Thanks for your advice. MerryX bro

Ok so I downloaded and installed the tool kit. Went well. I had installed the drivers to pc, and that went well also. The next step in the directions say to enable usb debugging and plug phone in usb and wait for drivers to install. Now, when I plug in my phone, I get an error message window that says:
Found new hardware wizard
Cannot install this hardware
Samsung mobile MTP Device
An error occurred during installation of the device
The required section was not found in the INF
Click finish to close the wizard.
I attached a photo of it. Whats weird is that when I open the tool kit, the serial number of my device is listed. Anyone else experience this? How did you get past this issue? Should I just continue rooting from the main menu on the tool kit? By the way, I took my ext SD card out cause I didn't want to chance losing all my stuff, not sure if that matters or not.

Thanks. I am a little confused though now even after reading a lot. During root, it recommended doing option 3 which was rooting/busy box/recovery. The next step was choosing which recovery. I believe it recommended touchwiz recovery. My question is, how do I know which roms/kernels I can use with this recovery?
It was most likely TeamWinRecoveryProject aka TWRP. Just check which version you have, almost if not all roms/kernels for this device will flash if you have the latest recovery.

Sure can. Just read the OP of that thread and maybe the next two if they are by the Developer all the info you need should be there and in my thread for the most part.
