otg woes - HTC One X

does anyone have experience of an otg cable that will charge phone whilst connected?
I have just received 3rd ebay item from China that purports to do so but fails
http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.view&id=221225352773
would really like to be able to use hox for more than an hour whilst is plugged into my storage.
cheers

Have you tried it with a usb pen connected. I think it won't charge when no usb device is connected.

I believe its not possible to charge while using otg mode, as the phone's charging capability is blocked to enable otg. Im not sure if charging through pogo pins will work or not, but it should.

And I believe power part of the cable you purchased is for external power to your USB device, like a 2.5" external HD.

DIY USB OTG CONVERTER FOR i9100! IT WORKS!

The most Micro USB to USB converters are not work if you want to use it for OTG converter, because the 4. pin of the micro usb plug is not connected!
The most ebay and computer shop's converters like this!
If you want to use it for working OTG adapter you have to connect the micro usb connector 4. pin to GND (5. pin).
Like this:
I made this mod on my adapter and it works!
First you have to open up the outter cover and carve the plastic around the micro usb pins. You can use multimeter to check the pinout.
After that solder the 4. pin to 5. pin with a piece of wire.
And finally glue back the outter cover.
Video:
So if you have not working adapter you can mod it, if you have suffice experience with electronic and proper tools.
Only do with your own risk!
I have this Usb converter!
With your mod works perfectly!!
just tried it it works perf, thank you!

It may have a resistor between pin 4 and 5, kind of like a jig,
I remember there was a fun with resistors thread for the sgs1.
I may attack tge free dock I,got from optus.

OTG Cable USB (B) to Micro USB (A) Powered with AAA batteries ?
As one knows, Samsung has promised a MHL Cable
You noticed it is not only a cable but a box out of which you may plug in an extra power supply.
The obvious reason is if the passive monitor does not furnish 5V, the phone will rapidly be out of power.
Now you know that to obtain video rather than anything less, Pin 4 (sense) and 5 (Ground) of micro USB (male A) must be connected with a 365K resistance.
I suppose the dock Samsung is selling for I9100 (yes, I have it) is grounded at 1000K as it provides audio with remote, and yes, the dock provides power supply via extra micro USB as well.
I come to my point: If I want to access any USB data On the Go, I need a cable OTG with 2 ports: USB 2.0/3.0 (female, B sided) to a micro USB (male, A sided, grounded but with no resistance = 0K). Many of them exist on the market out there.
But it is quite impossible to use because of lack of power supply in the passive device (let’s say a handy 1T HDD usually powered via Host connexion !
Would it be possible to insert some sort of receptacle for AAA battery in the middle of such a cable to provide for power while you are for a long time out of access to an electric plug ? Does such a cable exist somewhere to buy ? What would be the sheme to mount this ? HELP !
Is it possible to add USB charging cable to USB-host cable? I want to use mouse\keyboard\flash and charge device in the same time.
I also interested how to add power to USB-host cable for devices "High-power device connected".
OTG and Power
thats excactly my question:
is it possible to use otg cable with a trackball or mouse and at same time charge the S2?
give power to usb mouse and charge S2 over a charger!?
Is it possible to use a game controller over usb otg? Would be pretty nice.
Wanna have a S2Play ;-)

USB OTG cable with charging - is that possible?

While researching ability to use USB DAC while charging the phone in the car I found this video. The guy clearly says that tablet is charging while accessing all those accessories via USB OTG. Similar cables are found on ebay, called "USB OTG with power".
The big question is: would the Galaxy S3 actually charge while using USB DAC at the same time? It should be possible, but I don't have the phone yet (still considering it), nor do I have the cable, nor a USB DAC In theory it should be the same with any accessory - can someone actually confirm either way, whether phone can or can't charge in USB OTG mode with similar cable? This video shows similar setup on Galaxy S (only it's normal OTG cable, USB hub, usb Y-cable and card reader) and it's definitely charging while mounting USB devices! Will S3 do the same?
I fear that upgrading from Galaxy S with voodoo control of Wolfson chip to north-American S3 with worse audio path might not suit me if there's no way to power the phone and use external DAC at the same time in the car... I hope there is a way... I appreciate any advice and opinions.
It's a first time I see such cable...All I read was people saying it's impossible in the first place. Well, hopefully in 2 weeks I'll be able answer your question

Sonic, any luck with your friends phone? Really looking foward to your results :fingers-crossed:
Do you have part #s for the variable resistors in your samsung post or at least where you got them from? I would be willing to try some things out if I could find the right pieces. What I really want to get my hands on is the MHL adapter that was shown off with that spider laptop at IFA a couple weeks ago..
SUCCESS!!! I can confirm that this USB OTG cable (http://ebayitem.com/190710044655) DOES CHARGE MY GALAXY S3! I plugged in USB cardreader with SD card into the phone through this cable (it lit up and card is fully readable), then plugged USB cable end into PC and phone showed a charging icon! Moreover, after waiting for 5 min. with screen off (cardreader still glowing blue and working) battery has gone up from %72 to %75 (and while I was writing this, to 78%), so it is indeed charging! Yay! It probably won't get up in the car, where just phone alone is "not discharging" at best from the car adapter, but at least it should allow me to listen to music with quality DAC and use navigation without (or with minimal) discharging.
I have not tested it with USB DAC that I intend to use for my car (Behringer UCA222), because I have to go out and buy it. Hopefully it works. Anyway, this cable definitely works with simultaneously charging my north-american Samsung Galaxy S3 (from Bell Canada) while powering USB cardreader!
Somebody else has mentioned that another cable (http://ebayitem.com/120980364117) also worked in his Galaxy S2.
I bought Behringer UCA222 USB DAC and tested it in my car with the USB OTG cable with power that I mentioned. It works great! And the phone is indicating a charge. Sometimes when first playing music after plugging the device it sounds like fast forward for a few seconds (I guess clock rate mismatch or something similar), but after the presumably clock is locked it plays perfectly fine.

That is outstanding..gonna order one of these guys right now.
Here is a better link for all the ebay listings. Be aware of the differences, MicroUSB adapters would allow you to use your existing charge cable to plug into it while the standard USB would require you to be very close to the charger or have a USB A-A cable to attach to a power source.

The problem is that apparently not all of those cable work in terms of charging the phone. People say mostly that it doesn't work. The only guy mentioned success is with the cable I bought, but he then confirmed it with another, more convenient cable. I have the one that needs a USB extension cable to reach the charger, but it's about a buck on ebay, so no problem there. But not all cables work this way: most reportedly will allow you to power USB accessories but not charge the phone.
I found that this configuration works for charging while in USB HOST mode:
S3 -> standard otg cable -> Powered USB2.0 HUB -> devices (keyboard, usb dac, usb hdd...)
The only catch is that the hub must be powered before you plug in the phone or the phone will try to power the hub and will never enter charging mode. I'm using this setup in my car and it works perfectly. As long as I start the car before plugging the phone, we are good to go.
I only confirmed this works with AOKP JB builds. No idea about other roms/kernels. Hopefully this helps someone.

Samsung galaxy S3 OTG for USB 3. hard drives

Hi there,
I have a samsung galaxy S3 (rooted) and have recently purchased OTG cable. The problem is that when I connect s3 with Hitachi Touro (mobile USB 3.0) through OTG cable hard drive does appear in files. I have installed paragon NTFS and stickmount apps but it doesn't seem to connect even though a message keeps appearing "usb connector is connected". Hard drive gives a clicking sound when it is connected with S3 but works perfectly with the computer.
Does anyone know solution to this?
Thanks and regards
I've heard of some people having problems when connected to a usb 3.0 port on their computer and have to connect to a 2.0 port instead. Maybe related?

USB 3.0 I don't think is supported. What I've seen people do is use a 2.0 cable extension with their 3.0 device. As this downgrades it to 2.0 because they should be compatible with 2.0 just won't have the insane speeds as 3.0. Or you can get a USB hub and plug it in that way.

Sounds like the Hard Drive is not getting enough power (The clicking), do you have it plugged into an external power supply?

Splatdotsplat is correct. That clicking sound are the heads resetting to the park position. This usually happens when drives are not getting enough power. When the drive spins up it peaks its power consumption and cuts out because there is not enough so the heads reset. Portable or not that is the issue. I have seen this happen with some portable drives on computers (especially larger capacity). A lot of times the solution can be as simple as using a shorter cable. Sometimes it doesn't work.
as stated above, the only way to run external hdd's of any kind is to be sure they're powered, even some thumbdrives will draw more power than the phone can provide and you'll notice your batt life take a steep dive (as did my Galaxy Nexus w/otg on an HP 16gb thumbdrive)
power the drive through a powered hub and you're good to go!

Just to throw in some info. I do agree about the hdd not getting enough power as the cause for the clicking. I have a 500gb hitachi drive that does that if a long usb cable is used. The drive didn't come with a power adapter but instead came with a short usb cable that had two heads. allowing it to draw power from two ports. It also had a port for an adaptor though.
When testing with my Samsung Galaxy sIII It doesn't work unless I have the hd running via external power or have the second usb connector on the cable connected to a charging usb cable. Both options charge the phone while the hd is connected to the phone.
The usb cable with the double ports actually works well for me. I have the first port connected to the otg cable that I made and the second connection connected to a usb extender that is connected to my 2A tablet charger. That way I can charge at the same time.

Hi the problem i basically power as in the amount of current your device requires, i know that the standard specifications of the original 2.0 interface is about max 500mA and 5Vdc per port, in some cases the maximum output current is even smaller due to hardware restrictions, this can lead to difficulties when trying to power something like an external hard drive. Therefore a long cable will also give a problem due to the resistance of the material, because the required voltage level is not high enough.
I do not know if there is a spec sheet containing information about the output capabilities of the usb port, if there is one i recommend using that to match an external hard drives, if you do not want to use an external power supply.
Edit: you could also use an external power bank/battery pack but i seems a bit bulky

USB OTG works out of the box for low power devices. I havent seen/read anything stating USB 3.0 works on the S3. I have a 1TB hard drive my brother gave me, its not the newer ones that are ssd so it has a power adapter with it and it works perfectly with my S3. Going to be using it in a few minutes to back up my internal SD.
So guys I have the GT-I9300 ( Galaxy S3 ) and I have 1 TB WD My Passport
I'm plannig to buy the OTG piece ! so as of now is possible to connect the hardrive to the phone or not yet !?
Is there even a driver and an app to do such a thing? As I see it the USB port is configured as an external storage device to connect to a computer not the other way around. What you are doing is connecting two storage devices together. There's no way I would ever connect anything to my phones USB port that requires power. If I were to, it would be through a powered hub.

No, nobody is going to have a recommendation for a powered USB hub.
It's a trivial, generic, piece of kit you buy nearly anywhere for under US$10 (unless you're a complete sucker.) Just make sure whatever you get *includes* a power supply.
Get one in the shape of a person, or a kitty cat, or a Tardis, whatever thrills you.

that's not quite accurate. when you plug your phone into your PC, the drivers that you installed will see your phone as a usb device (or media device) and allow you to use your phone as such
an OTG (on-the-go) cable allows you to connect a storage device to your phone, such as a thumb drive or external hard drive (powered or not) and then your phone acts like your PC and uses that device as storage

I can confirm that in my case forcing my ADATA HV610 1 TB disk to USB 2.0 mode worked. The trick is to use a standard micro-USB cable (e.g. the one that comes with your charger) instead of the standard cable that comes with the HDD.
More detail:
The common USB 3 cable which comes with most new HDDs uses USB 3.0 Micro-B plug which, in practice, is a micro-USB with a "half-micro-USB" next to it. The part most people don't know is that you can use a common micro-USB cable (as the one from your charger) to connect your HDD to your PC (or other device) with the cost of loss of USB 3.0 compatibility. Which, in our case, is what we need, as this switch makes the HDD less power-hungry.
Post a comment if it works for other hard drives too (I think WD also use Micro-B connectors for their USB 3.0 Passports)

HTC One Extended Charger USB Wire - Unable to charge

Hi Guys
I bought a 3m USB cable wire for the HTC One so I can lie down in bed and use my phone with a longer cable while charging the phone. I noticed it kept saying Unable to charge while in host mode. Why is this? When I plugin the normal original USB wire in to charge the phone it works perfectly. Is the 3m wire not sufficient enough for the HTC One?
Thanks in advance
J4v3d
Hmm, are you plugging it into a wall adapter or a computer's usb port? The host mode thing should only kick in when it tries to act as a host for a usb device such as a flash drive or external hard drive. Assuming that you're using a wall adapter, I would say it would be a defective usb cord as it keeps making the phone enter host mode. Just a sidenote, the phone is unable to charge whenever it is host mode. Hopefully someone else can weigh in on this.
It seems you got a 3m OTG cable, the "unable to charge while in host mode" message shows up when I plug in my OTG cable.

Make sure you have a 'charge only' lead to the charger (Shows as 'AC connected' not 'USB Connected') or you'll find you won't have enough power to do everything.

Yes, i tried but i cant charge. I tried with other phone and works but dont have otg support.
The problem with OTG and simultanous charging is that you'll probably need a custom kernel supporting this.
Because if you use OTG (or a data cable respectively), the phone will only charge with 500 mA max. - this might not be enough to charge your phone while using power-consuming apps (navigation, games,...). If you want the phone to charge faster/draw more current, you'll need to short-circuit the data leads - but then you can't use OTG/data. Tricky...

I think that is not the reason because if i try to charge only didn't work, i think the charging cable is not compatible with moto g like some chargers specific for some patents.
If someone knows a cable like that to charge and use usb stick or something compatible with moto g I would appreciate.
The cable is probably working, but the kernel is not supporting it. If you use a USB y-cable, it will power a plugged-in USB stick / device, but not your Moto G. You will need a kernel or tomorrow supporting simultaneous data & charging. Have a look in the Nexus 7 sections, there you'll find more information about this.
