[Q] USB OTG host mode for digital audio out - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S 4

I have been searching here and at Head-fi, and I cannot find an answer to my problem. I cannot seem to get sound out from my S4 over my OTG cable. I have a DAC/Amp that many have trued and report that my DAC/Amp is plug-n-play, no mods, no other apps needed. I have used this DAC/Amp to get digital audio out from my Galaxy Note 10.1, again totally plug-n-play. Here is the link to the cable I bought - is it possible that this might be the wrong cable somehow? I have tested this cable and it does work with a USB thumb drive on my S4. I also looked up and found one post that said to enable digital audio out by going to settings-my device-accessory and checking the "audio output mode" box. Didn't work. I tried making sure I turned on the system sound, etc. Nada. Where do I go from here? I have been on the thread that lists all the DACs and DAC/Amp that work with all the various Android devices, and my my and my device (Leckerton UHA-6S mk II) are on the list, and I have been on threads where people are using the combo I have. Please help! I would love to know what I am doing wrong/missing/defective so I can get this working. Thanks!!

Is your kernel stock? I had to revert back to stock kernel from ktunez in order for OTG to work with my external DAC.

My kernel is stock.

FIXED!
We are fixed!
It was the obvious thing. The cable was defective. I just got two other cables from Amazon (very cheap). They both work perfectly immediately. The are both from different vendors, but they are both the exact same cable. They are different from the original in one way: the micro USB portion that plugs into the Galaxy S4 is much longer than the defective one. I don't know if that means anything, but there it is. Thanks to everyone for your help, especially DanBa who took extra time and effort to help me. Thanks!

Need this cable: Micro USB to 3.5mm & USB splitter

Dear awesome community,
For the past month or more I've been trying to find a place where they sell Mirco-USB to 3.5mm/USB cables, but I have come to no success whatsoever!
Is such cable impossible to make? Or am I just looking in the wrong places.
Check out the attached picture that I've created to show what I need and mean.
It looks simple, right? Now, I would love to get one of these at any price.
Help me!

Well, instead of having two wires coming out of my Note (Top and bottom) while I'm driving, a cable like this well have only one wire coming out from under the phone, cutting on clutter and annoying wires.
must be out there
heres something similar but is mini usb which is no good.

That's totally proprietary. The phone that that is made for probably doesn't even have a 3.5mm jack.

Well.. sorry to be a troll. However, you started this thread conveniently assuming that Headphone output through MicroUSB port of Note will work? Its not an HTC phone which has headset support.
May I know the reason for your ASSUMPTION that it would work even if you get the cable?
Your best bet for a single plug into your phone would probably be to use an MHL>HDMI adapter, and then get another adapter to convert from HDMI audio to 3.5mm.
That would be rather clunky though. HDMI > Anything (that isn't DVI) converters are going to run you at least about $40 for a start, and they aren't small either (probably not much smaller than the phone itself .) And they are externally-powered, so you'd need to provide power to both the MHL dongle and the HDMI converter, so it'd be super untidy.
You could do it though.
But you're probably better off using Bluetooth.

My assumption comes from the fact that there is a "docking" option in the system settings of the Galaxy Note, meaning that there is support for docking stations and probably audio output for them.
I'm not saying that the Note is the only and first phone to have it, I'm just wondering if there are such cables out there and if such thing possible to be made through Micro USB.
I had an iPhone almost 2 years ago and such cable was available easily and it did really help in my car setup, and since the Note has the same slot setup of my old iPhone I would really like to know if a cable like that is somewhere out there.

Well, looking at this car docking station...
(Link not allowed. Search for "Genuine Samsung Galaxy Note Vehicle Dock - ECS-K1E1BEGSTD" on MobileFun)
...it clearly shows a "speaker line out" socket in one of the photos, with only one connector (i.e. the micro USB connector) attaching to the phone.
So it is most certainly possible.
Hmmm, the both the official desktop dock and car dock have a 3.5mm audio out. It seems unlikely that there would be a USB DAC in the docks themselves, which suggests that analogue audio is being piped out the microUSB port on the phone itself.
Of course, the OP could just buy the official car dock to get nice tidy cabling...
If i understood the purpose of this cable, it would be:
For example:
My car supports audio input so the purpose of a cable like this would be to stream music to my car audio system and recharge de phone like a all-in-one right?

Exactly! I found out about this dock yesterday and I'm still wondering why isn't anything like of what I suggested earlier available? How come now one asked about this before!

That is exactly what I want!
Very Interested in this as well. OEM dock wont work with a case. So this would be a great alternative paired with a car cradle such as this.

I too really want one of these.
It is obviously possible as the destop & car dock do this.
The only way is, for someone with some electronics knowledge to pull one of these apart to see how its done. It would be interesting to see if it is straight audio out, or if there is a "Digital to Analogue Converter in there"

This might do the trick in the unlikely case that Note's microusb outputs audio. Tough I'm really interested in knowing for sure if the Galaxy Note microusb pumps line level audio.
Judging by the price of the desktop dock i wouldn't bet my money on the idea that it has not a dac. I
Use Bluetooth.

[Q] Who here is using a DAC & MHL? [EDIT - SOLVED - USE USB OTG INSTEAD]

I'm not an "audiophile", but I probably have more critical ears than most when it comes to quality sounds. And the GSIII isn't impressing me like I hoped it would. So I'm looking to squeeze as much out of the GSIII experience as possible, while also getting a good music experience.
So, I ditched Bluetooth and finally got USB audio when docked (thank you, CM).
But still not really impressed. Now I'd like to try these DAC things. But I have zero experience with these.
What I want is to store all my 320kbps MP3's and my FLAC's on my phone. And be able to hook my phone up to my car stereo, garage stereo and home stereo's.
One thing that concerns me is the car experience. How do you guys handle things like call audio and system sounds and GPS navigation voice?
Is it like with Bluetooth & USB audio where you hear everything without having to change inputs?
So if I plug my phone into an MHL and plug that into an HDMI to digital audio converter and plug that into a DAC and plug that into my car stereo's 3.5mm or stereo RCA input, I know that I'll get great/better music (right?!?).
But will I also get call audio and system sounds and navigation voice through that same DAC input to the car stereo? Or will I have to change an input for this to happen?
edit: Forgot to mention that I have no interest in video output at all. All I want is to get digital audio out of my phone! And I'm running a CyanogenMOD hybrid ROM.
edit #2: Oh snap, what is this USB OTG thing? Looks like something I need to research. Could be a way of getting digital audio out of phone without messing with some of the other crap.
http://www.head-fi.org/t/595071/android-phones-and-usb-dacs/270#post_8660606
EDIT #3: Yep, looks like a USB-OTG is all I need to connect my phone to a DAC. See attached pic.
Now just need to research and figure out if there is a way to charge the phone at the same time.
Edit #4: Kk, it looks like you can plug a DAC into your phone and have the phone also charge at the same time. This thread talks about it and also points to the $6 MHL adapter that is capable of doing this:
http://rootzwiki.com/topic/30615-can-you-charge-usb-host-mode-simultaneously/page__st__60
edit #5: Found a USB OTG cable with Y-cable to charging, for sale here in the USA for just $4 more than the Chinese folks. I just ordered it.
Now to buy a DAC (found a FiiO E7 on local craigslist for $35).

USB Audio Output

Well, I finally found out you can get audio out of the USB port and grabbed a cable from eBay. Thought life would be grand. Got the cable and it works. Still grand.
Then the problems started. Horrid pop, crackle, hiss, beeps, and bloops. Did a little homework and found apparently it's a realatively common problem, but can't seem to find much detail.
Anyone know of any fixes other than a warranty swap out as I'm sure we're well past that point now.
Thanks in advance.
Wait, so analog audio out of the USB port? Why not just use the mini headphone jack?

One cable to rule them all. This way I plug in one cable (work or car) and listen to audio and charge the phone at the same time. I'd use bluetooth in my car, but Velosters have an absolute crap bluetooth when combined with this phone.
It's just easier and less to deal with.

[Q] HDMI out through amp?

Hey guys,
So I have a M919V (from Videotron) and I just bought the official Samsung MHL 2.0 HDMI adapter. I previously bought a cheapo one from Monoprice and I couldn't get any sort of video out of it even with the 11-pin adapter. I tried with my old S3 and that wouldn't work either, so I got a defective one.
So now, yay, it works, and I can have HDMI out straight to my TV, but I'd really love to plug it into my amp instead, as I could get surround sound and such. Strangely enough, when I do plug the HDMI cable into my amp, my phone shows "Plug the phone directly into the TV".
Is there a way to enable the HDMI out through an amp? I'm *guessing* this has something to do with HDCP or whatever, but I kinda doubt it (my PS3 is full HDCP and still functions quite well through HDMI) so I'm really wondering what's going on with this.
I'm on stock rooted.
I recommend just using a headphone jack to plug into an amp. I haven't seen any mods that allow for hdmi on audio devices yet. There could be one, but I haven't seen it, do a quick search on xda.

That's a possible solution, true. I'll have to give that a shot... It really sucks, I'd be stuck with stereo anyway. My ultimate goal is to be able to stream videos from my PC to my phone and output to my TV, which would negate the need for any sort of weird device.

USB Audio not working?

Hi guys!
I haven't found any thread on this topic, excuse me if there is one after all!
So, I bought a P2 two days ago and am very very happy with it! My only problem at the moment is, that it seems to not deliver usb audio. When I plug in my Fiio E07k DAC, It will charge through the phone but the phone won't output music. I tried it with Neutron and USB Audio Player pro. With my Nexus 6 before that, I just plugged in the AMP and everything worked. I could even define an app starting when the Fiio was detected.
WIth the Lenovo it doesn't work at all. I tried it with the cables I normally use and also with the supplied USB OTG adapter. No luck.
Please help! I'm locken and unrooted on Stock Nougat 7.0
Cheers,
MoWe
Today, I got a replacement unit from amazon. USB Audio isn't working either. Also it was much worse build wise, so I will stick with my first unit for now.
Could somebody check, if usb audio works with a custom rom and is just a problem of the official rom?
Cheers,
MoWe
Update.
In the Lenovo forum, I got the answer from a Motorola tech agent, that a USB Headset worked great for them through the bundled OTG Adapter.
Is somebody here, who can verify this? I haven't got an USB Headsets.
And maybe there is somebody who has a USB DAC of any kind at their disposal and would try it out... That would be very much appreciated!
Cheers,
MoWe
Hi Guys!
Here is an update!
Today I was in a local HiFi store which is the only one in Hamburg to sell Fiio equipment, I know of.
I tried out different USB DACs on my Lenovo P2. An Audioquest Dragonfly red, an Oppo HA-2SE, Chord Mojo and a second USB Stick kind of DAC I can't remember the name.
The two USB Stick DAC worked flawlessly right from the plug in! Perfect!
The Oppo was recognized and charged but I could get any music routed through it and the Chord Mojo did the same as my fiio, nothing.
So I summary, USB audio works in the Lenovo P2 but only with certain devices. The drivers seem to be modified from the stock google drivers in this regard.
Hope, the update helps some people!
MoWe
