Problem with Librarys on Surface Pro

So I have a Surface Pro and have my Movie and TV show library on an external HDD. I can get the files to show up in the video library by adding the folder to the library in explorer. My question is this. Is there any way to make windows 8 categorize these files or specify for each folder that one is movies and one is TV? Right now they all show up in the all section of the video library but nothing shows in the movies or TV. I'm assuming that these categories are for purchased media from the Xbox market. I have a lot of movies and TV shows that I have ripped from my collection over the years and it would be nice if I could trick windows into organizing it. I haven't been able to find anything in my searches on here or google.
Thanks for any help in advanced.
As far as windows cares you just have 2 video files. It has no way to distinguish between it being a movie or TV show. I use VLC as my media player and personally I just keep things seperated manually.
The existing movies and TV folders are probably for content purchased via windows 8 yes.
OK yea that's what I thought. I ended up downloading xbmc and just using that to organize the files. Was hoping there was a way to trick it. Oh well.

PowerDVD Mobile

PowerDVD Mobile for Surface RT has been released
http://apps.microsoft.com/webpdp/app/e1dd130e-d240-4c57-947c-0809b0b93acf
I have been waiting for VLC for a long time because none of the multimedia player released for RT have satisfied me at all. Some do not play MKV and so far none of them have been able to play from my IOmega Multimedia Server.
PowerDVD did the trick.
Unfortunately is not perfect, it does not handle well subtitles and it's a big expensive but other than that I would recommend everybody to check the trial version.
thanks for the info,
can you tell me if the RT version of powerdvdmobile reads 3gp format ? (in my case, videos from my old smartphone)
rgds,
ph.

Windows RT treats all optical media as a data disk. It cannot recognise audio or video disks, it just treats them as data instead, no media player I have tried seems capable of playing back DVD's when treated as data. Use VLC media player (or something else) to rip the DVD to another format on a full PC instead, it should be able to play those files.

hello,
contrary to an audio CD, a DVD is a data disk.
it would be interesting to check if Powerdvd for RT can read VOB files copied to surface's internal disk or SD card (using an unprotected DVD, at first), meaning, not depending of the DVD disk structure.

Sorry to butt in here. I've seen references to ripping DVDs with VLC in other places but have never found any directions. Can you point me in the right direction.
Thanks for everyone's patience. I realize this is off topic.

I'm happy with PowerDVD and I tested yesterday playing an unprotected DVD copied to my network. I don't have an USB external DVD to test it with but I think it can,

hello,
sorry, i'm a bit lost. if you use DVDFab, it is not a "copy", it is "ripping", is this correct ?
what do you mean by "unprotected copies" :
- DVD ripped and converted to mp4 file (or avi or whatever), you play the mp4 from your NAS
- DVD ripped without conversion : you play the VOB, IFO etc from your NAS
- DVD not ripped : just cut & paste the VOB you need to NAS
please specify how it does not play commercial DVD : ok, what happens exactly when you enter the DVD in the drive plugged to the surface ?
also, not all commercial DVDs are protected : old dvd's, cheap dvds like old cartoons for kids etc, have you tried with a drive ?
thank you

Ripped DVD means unprotected. It doesn't matter if you convert or not. A Ripped DVD without converting it, just copied to my NAS plays.
A Commercial DVD in an external USB DVD player doesn't play. It doesn't matter if you copy the vob files to a NAS because they were not ripped so the copy protection still there.

[Q] Windows RT and Synology NAS

Hi @all,
I have a Problem in Windows RT on my Surface RT tablet.
I allready use for Long time a NAS (Synology DS 207+) where I mapped Network drives on my Laptop to get Access to all my datas, Pictures, Music ...
On the RT I also mapped the Network drives and I also get Access on the files. No Problems for Excel, word and other files. But when I open Pictures (JPG) from my NAS the Picture app from RT opens but only Shows a black Screen with the file Name in top left Corner but Picture will not be showed.
When I first copy the file from the NAS on the Surface RT and then open it everything works OK.
Same with Music files.
Has anybody an idea what might be the Problem?
Thanks and best regards
I'll try this out later today and let you know. I have a DS212j. I'm running the latest version of DSM though, but I'll check it out.

One more thing that I saw is:
If I try to open the Pictures/Music via the Network drives I mapped for this Folders on the DS it does not work.
But if I do the same via the DS Mediaserver that is also visible on the surface Explorer I can Access the Music and Picture Folder on the DS and can open everything.
But it would be better to use the mapped Network drives because this I could also include in the library of win8rt and including the mediaserver in the library seems not to work.
Thanks if anybody can help here.

Out of wonder, do the pictures open if you try to use the windows photo viewer (or whatever it's called), is this just an issue with the metro apps?
I know that on RT the metro apps rely on indexing to build their own libraries, but I'm not aware of it not opening or playing from a network location.
Also do you experience the same issue with video files?
As I updated to RT 8.1 it now works if I open the Pictures via the file Explorer on the Website. Also Music and Video now works. If I open them the Metro app starts and Shows the Picture and I also can browse to all the Pictures in this Folder.
So the only Problem I still have is to link the synology link to the RT library. This does not work.
Any idea for this?
