Yet another battery topic... - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

Been reading some of the other topics here trying to learn which is the best choice for an extended battery for the T989. I've seen praise going out to Anker and EC Technologies, an extended battery for the Galaxy Nexus, someone having decent luck with a battery with Chinese printing on it, etc.
So let's make this simple...
1. Is there a definitive list of which batteries have consistently shown better performance over others and have shown to do at or above the expected return compared to the stock battery?
2. Are there any particular companies/brands/etc to avoid at all costs? As in, so bad that even manufacturers of other below-par extended batteries can honestly brag about not being THAT bad.
3. From what I've read and learned, most non stock batteries don't support NFC. Are there any reliable extended batteries that do? Are there alternatives to keep NFC available even if the battery doesn't support it? I have a feeling the answer is no to the last one, but I could be wrong.
Not really battery related, but charging related...
1. I've come across a dual purpose charger with the Sprint name on it (via ebay). It plugs into a car but you can unfold prongs on it so it can be plugged into the wall. On the end (away from car adapter), there are two USB ports (one open, the other you can uncover when needed). Are those any good? Main interest here is the dual USB option as well as being able to use in a car or in a house.
2. I guess more importantly would be, are the accessories seen on ebay generally reliable (Buy It Now auctions, reputable sellers of course)? A lot of the car plugs I've seen look like I wouldn't have much to grab to pull on when needing to unplug it and that worries me. Also concerned about the quality/safety/reliability of the products and thus the question. If they are all pretty much "all the same" just different looks and such, but otherwise all safe, then that's great.
3. From #1.. Are there any reliable/reputable car/wall chargers that provide more than two USB ports? Like the idea of it being a single car/wall charging unit, but if it's two pieces (with more than two USB ports each), that works too.
Ever since getting and starting to use the T989... Wow, I wonder what I'm doing to cause it to need to be charged 20 times/day. (Not literally.)
For the record, I had made the slight boo-boo of getting a pair of the cheapo 'extended' batteries before reading up on them. Not too bad though, doesn't hurt to have spares. I saw a reference to recalibrating a battery, but when going into recovery mode, didn't see an option referred to for resetting the stats. Are there any decent guides for proper care of a battery? Best practices when first getting it, when to charge it, not charge it, etc.
Thanks for any help provided. Now off to enjoy my phone some more. Haven't talked much on it yet but hey, only had it about three weeks.

for your answer for number 3 there is an app called super beam if my memory serves me right and has a blue kind of wifi signal and should serve as a good NFC "alternative"

By alternative, do you mean it's not NFC but serves the same purpose? I'll definitely check it out, as I can see the usefulness of NFC. Still would like to know if NFC itself can be accomplished when using a battery that doesn't support it. Actually, more of, wanting to understand it just enough to know if it's possible and how (if so) or why (if not). I hope that makes sense.
I had tried bump but that was a bit of a disappointment. Will try looking for 'super beam' and see if I can find it. Thanks.
Edit: Found it.
SuperBeam (com.majedev.superbeam), without a space in the name. Looks promising, will try it out.

Basically if its not a well known, reputable brand name (samsung) they have no reason to be truthful about mah
Most of the no brand batteries are equal or lower mah than stock.
If samsung could fit more mah in a battery of that size, why would they not?
For charger testing use this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1801608
Higher numbers = faster charging
The max the phone will pull from a good charger is around 800ma, usb ports on pc's are limited to 500, which equals slow charging
:edit: not sure if this deal is still going, but alot of people (myself included) got free galaxy nexus extended batteries here

Profits come to mind. Could be that they intended to sell an extended battery but in the end never did (did they?) or wanted to leave room for improvements as a selling point in the future. I'm sure you know companies will do that sort of thing to stay in business.
When I asked about ones to avoid, I meant if there are any particular ones that are the bottom of the barrel, even among 'generic' batteries. Perhaps identified by the label itself even if it doesn't have an actual name on it. Would still love to hear feedback in regards to the more popular batteries, as I don't want to order a pair from Anker and then come across a group praising some other brand (for example) and of course, vice versa.

So aside from the back not closing 100% (or can it with some effort?) it works in the S2?
Edit: Found answer in Galaxy nexus battery, apparently it does. Ordering one as I update this post (shipping is $6.50, not a bad deal for battery and cover).

I modified my battery, with a file. The result is a less buldging door

Oh and the cover is only for the Gnex, you have to use your stock t989 battery cover
In terms of 3rd party batteries, anker is supposed to be one of the better ones.
Search the forum for anker broke to get an idea if the "best" third party is any good

Yeah I figured as much, still not a bad deal. I could probably sell the back on eBay, so that someone else ends up with it. Might not matter too much with the bulging door, as I'm using one of those 'Heavy Duty Rugged' cases. The one I got on eBay is item # 620107891193. Not really into the idea of doing anything to a battery, for fear of causing it to leak or something else which causes problems.

Will do. Still need to check out that app you mentioned in the previous post.
When I first looked at the deal link you provided, the date alone had me thinking, "Oh yeah, this is likely long gone..." but decided that I had nothing to lose by checking it out. As you probably guessed by my last post, it's still good. Many thanks for that.

id prolly buy one at $30 just because it is bad ass!!!! id prefer $20 or $25 but whatever, lol still kinda cool
Well I'm unemployed starting last Friday so I have to make a couple of bucks on each one. I think it will end up being around $5 profit on each one so I won't be making much.

Not trying to hijack this... but these are awesome. I built one last year for my G1 and other devices. Well worth it.

Since it looks like you're basically buying the LadyAda kit [that circuit definitely looks like one of hers] and building it, I could see $30 being a decent price (as long as you're using the v3 of the kit) IF you're throwing in the batteries.
I can't see paying an extra $10 just for you building the kit though (sorry, but I know how easy it is to solder those).
Unless you can get those parts significantly cheaper than what LadyAda is selling her kits for, I don't see this being very profitable for you.
Newegg has the same basic thing in a (admittedly less cool looking case) for $20.

The only part coming from ladyada is the pcb. Like I said, this is an open source design and I was simply offering to make it for people who don't know how to solder.
Again, if you're interested in this let me know. I'll figure out a concrete price later tonight maybe. I'll have to see what shipping is going to look like. I'm not going to make much money on these at all.

Sheesh, give the guy a break, he's just trying to make a buck. It's a good idea. People do the same thing on the diy guitar pedal effects forums - basically building kits for people who either don't know how or who just don't want to deal with it.
Good luck to the OP.
Do you have a website to sell them from yet?
I'm on board for 3!
It's cool, but I'd like to see what TSA airport security would make of this.
First off, this is cool as hell.
Secondly, since the tin basically doesn't make any difference to performance, you could put it anything right ? Cigarette tin ? Old Gameboy ? Broken effects pedal ? Is it harder to add more batteries for extra capacity if you have the space ?
Finally, is entering the realms of crazy hard to add a 9v jack to this and make the whole unit rechargeable without replacing the batteries ?
Did anyone else see this and their brain connected straight to Steampunk Altoids Tin Etching ? Oh the possibilities Now I just need to make friends with someone who owns chemicals and won't end up dissolving me with them.
If you do go into making these, then I'd be interested as long as they'll let you ship them airmail. I can't see it being a problem, since you can ship most anything, but home made circuitry might be a problem for obvious reasons. Keep updating tho, is a cool project

I've heard/read of people flying with these before and I can't see it being a problem as long as you don't try to hide it. Just open it up and they might ask you to connect it to your phone to show that it actually works.

On the topic of adding extra batteries, you can easily add a third AA but doing more than that will raise the voltage over the input voltage of the chip. You could theoretically put 4 batteries; two sets of series in parallel. However, it is generally regarded as bad practice to put batteries in parallel for reasons I won't go into. It is not possible to use a 9V battery with this particular circuit because the voltage is too high. There are ways to reduce it but it complicates the circuit and wastes a lot of energy. Besides that, 9V batteries do not have as much capacity as AAs.
There is supposed to be a new "version" of this being made that will include recharging abilities but I don't have an eta.
I'm working out a pricing right now for a lot of 10. I figure that is a good starting point and buying in quantities greater than 10 reduces the cost of materials quite a bit. I'll post that tonight.

You could do it pretty easily adding a 5-12V jack, a diode and a current limiting resistor to slow charge (overnight) the batteries. That would be the easiest/cheapest. Fast charging would require a little more intelligence.
You could, for instance, make it chargable from a USB port pretty easily.
Okay everyone,
Looks like if I make 10 of these at a time, the price will be $30. That will include everything except Altoids tin and Batteries with USPS Flat Rate shipping. The circuit will be soldered and tested before being shipped.
For those who would like me to include the Altoids tin and mount the circuitry, it will make the price $35. $2 of that is for the tin itself, and the other $3 is for the work with a dremel and securing the circuit to the tin. If you don't need me to cut the tin and install the circuit, then it will be $32. I have not found Altoids Gum tins around me, but as soon as I find them, I'll see what they cost.
For those who want it shipped some other method, I can add/subtract the cost for that method of shipping. For example, if UPS Overnight adds $10, then I will add $10 to the final price. But if something like UPS Ground is only $2, then I will subtract the difference between the USPS Flat Rate and the UPS Ground.
As you can see, I'm going to be very flexible with this. I can even add a solar cell and Lithium Battery, that would add $55. Quite expensive but for those who want a neat gadget it's available. But, I have not built the Solar Version before and while it is supposed to be pretty easy, I may take a little longer to test it. I've heard it takes around 2 days to charge the battery that way. The lithium battery is 1200mAh at 3.7V or 4.4Wh minus some inefficiencies.
As of right now, Paypal would be the best way to pay. Cash is always accepted but I strongly advice against sending cash through the mail. Just send me a PM if your interested and I will give you my paypal email. As soon I have 10 confirmed buyers, I'll place the order for parts and ship them as soon as they're completed. I'm unemployed so it won't take long to make but I do have classes Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday nights. I also plan on testing each circuit on my own phone before shipping to verify it works.
I know it's generally bad taste to double post but this was completely unrelated to my previous post.
I just ran my phone down to 80% as read by BatteryLife Widget, placed it on the Altoids charger and roughly 20 minutes later my screen lit up with the "Battery Full" screen.
Tomorrow/overnight tonight I will run my phone down to 25% and see how full it will charge using two AA Energizer Rechargeables.
Keep in mind the max charge rate with this is 500mA vs the 700mA of the wall charger so it is not as quick as using your wall wart.
First let me say that the offer and tin is way cool! I would be one of those people who would take on the offer because i have no solder skills or intention to learn them at all.
But from a practical point of view wouldn't it be much cheaper and easier to carry two spare batteries for your device? I always carry a charged one with me (for htc desire).

Sure, you could carry an extra battery but this allows you to charge without turning the phone off. It can also charge almost any device that can charge from usb. So if you have an ipod or other mp3 player, it can charge that too.
Also, for someone like me, when I go camping, I can just bring a few extra AAs and keep my phone going all weekend.
There also is no gadget/nerdy factor of switching batteries but pulling out an Altoids tin and charging your phone is definitely that.
But yes, you could certainly carry two extra batteries and accomplish generally the same thing.
As for the cheaper part, I have no idea. It probably is cheaper for two ebay batteries but personally I don't trust anything but oem quality and some extended battery manufacturers but those haven't been made yet.

That would depend on the specs of the solar cell. But assuming it outputs the proper voltage, you would want to you use a lithium battery and a lithium charging circuit.
Post or pm me a link to the specs on the solar cell and I'll let you know if it is possible to make it work without too much trouble.
A little update on capacity: It has taken the phone from 40% - 63% in 50 minutes.

External Battery Charger

I don't know if there was already a thread about this, but I searched and didn't find anything.
So my USB port on my cappy is busted, so I had to buy this. I just got it today, but was disappointed to find out that it only charges the battery included (which I believe is a fascinate battery), and I can't use the other 2 batteries I have. The fascinate battery works fine, but I'd rather have 2 batteries to use for a backup. Could someone explain to me why it doesn't charge my cappy/i9000 batteries or any solution?
Edit: Also, nobody else seems to have this problem from reading the reviews.
Well the first thing that comes to mind for me is, are you sure the usb on your phone is busted? Maybe the problem is your original battery has stopped taking a charge. You said busted but I don't know if you mean physically as in you can no longer stick your wire in it, or just when you plug it in the battery does not get charged.
Busted isn't a concise enough description of the problem for me to be able to give a better answer.
I use the oem spare battery charger/stand and i love it.. Might want to try that if you dont get a repair or warranty done

Lol sorry, my usb port will not charge or sync at all. I also JUST ordered another battery, so unless my old battery stopped charging right when my usb port broke, and the new one I got was broken, I don't think it's a problem with the batteries. I just found myself in the same position as of two days ago (damned questionable design for the way the cappy's USB port is set and secured). Did you ever find out if there was a reason why you couldn't charge the batteries that originally came with the phone?
FYI: My timing for the 1 year warranty was awful in that it expired 19 days ago. As for insurance repair/replacement, I wasn't looking at replacing my cappy for approximately $125. So, after looking at doing a Walmart/Target deal, and then finding out they are still charging for tax, when it came down to costs I went with the external charger and replacement battery option after a lot of reading on the web, amazon, and then eventually to the posts on this topic....

IIRC the Fascinated battery won't charge in a Captivate and vice versa. They have different part numbers. I'm not sure of the techincal details but it has something to do with the different currents the two phones charge at.

Well that's a bit irritating. I guess then shouldn't have been advertising it as a charger for all phones, then.
I could probably do the repair work if pointed to the correct part necessary to replace the broken USB port. I fear one of these days my Captivate will suffer the same fate.
My qualifications: I do a lot of fine SMD/SMT reworking by hand. Mainly video game consoles and other consumer electronic goods. I have reputation/feedback on other forums as well as eBay if desired.

Tmobile SGS2 battery interchangable with At&t Infuse?

My girlfriend has a Samsung Infuse 4G. She has an external battery charger and a second battery for swapping in the middle of the day. She managed to get the extra battery for about $30 through AT&T.
I just got my T-mobile SGS2 and I'm trying to get a second battery from tmobile, but as of yesterday they do not carry extra batteries for it yet, either in store or by phone.
I am wondering if her battery will work in my phone. She could order me one right now if they are compatible. It would actually make our lives a bit easier if we had interchangeable batteries.
I took a picture of them side by side. My battery is on the left, hers on the right. the only difference appears to be that mine says 6.85Wh and hers says 6.48Wh. Also mine mentions NFC right on the battery.
anyone know what Wh means? anyone know if these batteries are interchangeable? could I damage my phone if I put her battery in it, or vice versa?
if you use the other battery, you will lose the NFC capabilities
as it's build into the battery
Which really doesn't seem to be an issue since NFC isn't really in use by anyone right now.... So the battery should work? I'd love to find another battery that fits inside the stock case and extends the life of the phone.
Did it work? Update?

no, I'm not asking anybody else to try it. im asking you guys if there's any chance of damaging the phone if I try it.
I don't know what Wh means on the battery. Does anyone here?
it's safe to do it, in case you didn't quite get the hint on my original reply
just take it out if you think that thing is burning up...
there doesn't seem any point in trying the swap now. Tmobile is offering a spare battery and battery docking station with external battery charger on their website for $50. It was just recently added to the website.
besides, losing NFC might not be a big deal at the moment, but down the road it could lead to not having your credit card available when you need it, based on the battery you grabbed that day.
often those external chargers go for $5-$10 on ebay alone. so getting the spare battery, another wall charger, and a nice docking station is worth the $50 to me.

Third Party Battery Charging

I bought a couple of cheap Chinese replacement batteries for my Xperia Play just to see if they were any good. So far, they seem to be lasting a lot longer than the original battery, but I've noticed I cannot charge them using the phone (it seems I have to use the standalone charger that came with the batteries). Is there any way I can convince the phone to charge these batteries, or is there some kind of hardware lockout for third party batteries that I won't be able to get around?

It's probably not a hardware lockout, just that the batteries are cheap. It comes with it's limitations, I presume.

The thing is, if there wasn't a lockout, I would assume the phone would at least be trying to charge them. It doesn't even show the charging icon when I plug it in. It just sits there running off USB power without providing any charging voltage to the battery. It may very well be that since the batteries are cheap, the manufacturer didn't bother to put a correct ID chip in or something, though. I'm just wondering if there's something I can change in the phone's settings or in some configuration file, or if it's something I can't do anything about at all. I did change the capacity in build.prop to match what's on the label for the batteries, if that might have affected the charging capabilities in some way.
Okay, the second battery of the two did show the charging icon when I plugged the USB cable into the phone. Interesting. Of course, it was already fully charged when I booted the phone with the USB cable attached, so maybe that had something to do with it. I'll have to see if the behavior is the same once it's been run down a little.
You get what you paid for. Sounds more truerer than ever. No pun intended.

No need to lecture me, I knew I was probably headed for some issues. Just feeling optimistic, haha.
What's awesome is that they really do last a lot longer than the stock battery. Phone's been on for almost 5 hours now, I've been tethering over WiFi for at least two hours, and the battery is just over half depleted. My stock battery would be blinking the 10% warning after this amount of tethering.
Okay, weirdness. The second battery charges in the phone without any problem (I let it run all the way down this time, then plugged in the USB connection). I wonder if it has anything to do with the way the label on the first battery bunched up when I inserted it? Maybe that was causing one of the contacts to not make a solid connection or something. I'll have to try it out again later.

I'm sorry, I just re-read this, and I'm genuinely confused by your statement regarding puns. I'll accept it as true, but I'm not sure which part of the preceding statement could be taken for a pun. I mean there's 'more truerer', which is kind of a funny way to word things, but it doesn't call the word 'pun' to my mind, haha.
Alright, well, I tried it again with the label un-bunched, and I guess battery #1 is just defective. Battery #2 still charges happily. I'll e-mail the seller and ask if they're willing to send me another battery or give me a partial refund (although a partial refund out of $22 wouldn't be that much, haha).
EDIT: Alright, I sent the seller a message, and they're just going to send me a replacement battery. I don't even have to send back the defective one! I just hope the new battery works like the 'good' one of the two I got in this set, and not like the 'bad' one. If anyone's curious, these are the MPJ brand batteries available on eBay. At the price they sell for, and with the willingness of the seller to correct a situation like the one I got into, they're probably worth the risk.
I only wish I could say whether the batteries are better than a brand new stock battery. The battery I got with my phone was sealed and unused, but for some reason it was a year older than the phone itself, so it might have already been suffering from diminished capacity due to age. The MPJ batteries definitely last a lot longer than my phone's battery when I first got the phone back in January, though.

ZeroLemon 4700 mah Battery Case review

Hey everyone,
So I know there are a couple other reviews for this case but that's ok. I have been using mine for a bit now and last night after a lot of real life usage have put together a review. See how it held up in real life conditions!!! Feel free to ask any questions if you have any!!!
I know you weren't fussy about discussing the ZeroLemon in your other thread, but thought it may be better not to clutter that one up too much, so I replied here

Nice. I'm still using mine. One thing I forgot to mention in the video that took me a bit to figure out was that when your phone battery is at 100% the battery case will turn off after a bit. It's not a bug though it's a feature. I mean it kinda makes sense right. Why waste power if it's at 100%. So when I'd look at my phone at times and see it's not charging and went down to like 96 or 97 I'd power the case back on and shortly thereafter it would go back up. Pretty clever feature actually.

Ah, ok. This will be my first ever extended battery attachment on any device so this will be interesting
Will the ZeroLemon turn on and start charging at "X%" of phone battery left, or do you manually turn the Zero on?

You have to manually turn it on. That would be pretty cool if it were that smart but it's not.
So I've been using my ZeroLemon since last Saturday now. While I enjoy the peace of mind of having more power available if needed, I'm not quite sure I need it to be honest I can get through the day just fine with the phone's built in battery.
Also, not quite sure I like the look of the carbon fiber appearance, but it's growing on me.
I always, and have to, use a belt clip/holster for my devices. And as such, there is no such thing available for the LG G7 with the Zero. So, I modified my existing belt clip/holster to fit it (heat guns are wonderful items )
Anyway, just my experience and not sure if I'll continue to use it, or toss it in the drawer for possible future use

I don't see how such a thing can be considered a case replacement to be taken with you to work, school or the coffee shop.
I see such a device as being for when you will be gone from civilization (Read: USB plugs) for a few days. I mean you can charge these phones with a laptop or any USB station in a lot of places, without needing the charger with you.

True, I'll go with you on that.
I suppose there are folks who don't want to worry about their battery dying during heavy usage and having to carry a charging cable and a means of charging it.
And then there are other folks like me who thought it looked pretty neat and wanted to try it
Hey thanks for the review. I've loved Zerolemon. Bought their extended life batteries for both my Note 3 and Galaxy S 3. Man those things were beastly!
Question, when it's charging on the phone how does that effect quick charge? Does it disable it until the case gets full then let it quick charge after the case is at 100%?
Random comment of the day from me listening to your voice made me laugh a little bit, not in a bad way of course, I knew from the long O's that you were either in the northern parts of the US or Canada. I've got family in Minnesota and Wisconsin and had a few online XBL friends from Canada. It's really funny when I start to combine my familys' Southern and Northern accent that I start picking up both. ADHD for the win!
Delete, I found a home for it

I have the ZeroLemon case for this device, hardly used it and now I traded the G7 for the G8 so I have no need for the case and do not want to throw it out. If anyone wants it, PM me and I will send it out.
