OEM charger output vs. high output car charger - LG Optimus G Pro

IIRC the stock wall charger is rated at 1.8Ah. But, what is the phone's actual draw? Does it ever get up there near 1.8mAh?
I'm just trying to figure out if a car charger with "only 1000mA" will be sufficient. I'm guessing that the OEM wall charger is rated well above whatever the phone might ask for, but as to how much, I don't know.
I'm actually looking at these two right now as they both seem to give a pretty high output for both Android and Apple devices.

My experience with other phones is that the phone draws exactly what the stock charger gives it. I'd imagine it's the same with this one. 3140mah is a lot of battery to charge.

I'd agree. I charged it the first couple days using the OGP wall charger and USB cable from my Nexus 4. It took all night. Switched the cable with the one in the box, and it charges in like an hour!

I have a 2.1a car charger, and the OGPro charges in exactly the same amount of time as the stock wall charger.
Oddly, it charges slower from my 2a Note II charger.

Im looking at all of the chargers from Anker on Amazon. It seems they have the best positive reviews of anything I've seen. Although the 3.6 watt (white unit with either 2 usb ports or one port and a micro usb cable) unit is newer than the 3.1 (black heavy duty), the black unit can give the full 3.1 watts to either port or split it amongst the two ports. And according to Anker, either port will work for Apple or android. They suggested i get the newer (white) unit, but i want to have the full 3.1 watts available to a single port for future h higher powered devices.

I'll have to check those out. I've been looking at this one, which has good reviews on it.

My concern with that one is that it gives a total of 2.1A. So if you charge your OGP using one usb port, there's only 0.3A left for the other port. The disclaimer at the end of the description says that if you are charging an iPad to not use the second port. I'm guessing that warning would also apply too us with the high draw OGP. It also states that the blue light gets even brighter in the dark. You might need to cover the led if it's too bright, but that's a personal taste thing, and it might not actually be that intrusive. Lastly, do you have enough room in your vehicle to rest both your phone, and the head of the charging device? I have a dual outlet 12v supplier in my car, but i bought one that has no cord. The two outlets are rigidly mounted right at the end of the cigarette lighter plug.

I bought a Griffin Powerjolt single USB at Walmart. It only charges at full speed using the OGPro's stock cable. Any other cable is slower, and the cable from my old S2 gives me a "Slow Charging" notification.
Anyway, this charger is just a stop-gap. I'm going to be hard wiring two USB plugs into my truck's 12v system (with some 5v regulators and an Add-a-Circuit).

I was looking at the 3.6A charger, here's the link on amazon.
As I expected, one port is for Apple and one for Android. This is very irritating because I need to charge my OGP while my fiance charges her OG at the same time on trips.
Can our OGP charge at full speed on the Apple port?
Edit: I just read that the kernal in Android 4.2 fixes this issue so we can charge in any USB charger, including apple chargers. I'm guessing LG devices still on 4.1 won't benefit from this update.

Shouldn't going to Settings > PC Connection > USB Connection Type and then setting it to "Charge only" force the device to see any cable as a charge only cable thus making it charge faster?

As per Anker, the Apple port will charge Android at full speed. I have not verified this myself as I have not gotten mine yet, but that's what I'm told, and expect. I'm waiting for their wall charger to come back in stock as the shipping will be free if l order both.

I ordered the black 3.6v version. I'll get it Monday or Tuesday since I have Prime.
Are there any apps that detect how much juice the battery is getting?

I also purchased This wall charger which works perfectly fine with our phone on both the "A" and "NA" port.
I'm willing to bet this car charger made by the same company as the one linked above will work also.

there is no "right" output
most usb ports will charge up to 500mA
the stock usb wall charger is, i think 750mA, i havent looked at it in awhile since its behind my desk, but i know its not 1A
the oem nexus one wall charger (non usb) will charge up to 1A
I would only recommend a 1A charger because there's no point to use a lower amperage, it just takes that much longer to charge your phone.
Couple of good threads on this topic, both on the vibrant and the i9000 acessories thread. Lots of good info. The deal extreme chargers look promising. Waiting to hear from a person who bought a 2amp charger if the extra 1a is used by the phone especially when using gps.

well, my phone will still charge (slowly) while watching avatar, which i would assume is a pretty high load on the cpu, using the 1amp charger i got from dealextreme.
fwiw, the one i have is a 1A "HTC" wall charger thats square and lights up HTC when charging, it ****s up my screen sensitivity so i wouldnt recommend it, but it was only like four dollars so i'll live with it.

AC charger or car charger?
The charger does not dictate the amount of current given to the phone. The phone will only draw what it wants to. The charger can limit the maximum current but if the phone only asks for 700mA, a 2A charger will only provide the 700mA demanded by the phone.
I don't know what the max current our phones will use but having a larger charger will only help if the phone requests the larger current.

I'm not sure how stressful watching Avatar is from a current draw perspective. The torture test is to turn on 3G, Bluetooth, synch, GPS and run the Navigation app while driving. Some post indicate that only a true 2A charger will be able to do this w/o discharging the battery. 1A ones can only limit the discharge. Cheap ones empty quickly.
Could you check what your charge current file value is for your 1A DE charger? Make sure to use the original Samsung cable and cross check with the original Samsung charger and a USB port.
1) Use an application like ES File Manager or Astro Filemanager
2) /sys/class/power_supply/battery/batt_chg_current

Yes, but I haven't heard that anyone has measured it. The numbers you are getting are consistent with what others have see. 800-900 for USB. The original Samsung 700mA charger is getting 900-1100.
If you have another Android phone try that one as well to see the differences (e.g. G1 ~300-400).

Car charger that charges at wall charger speeds?

What I use is a cig to usb plug (cost me 10 bucks at walmart). Then I bring the cord from home that came with my phone and plug that into the USB to cig thingy. Works like a charm, I haven't noticed it charging slower than when at home.

All I know is that now I can run my GPS with the screen on and still move UP in battery - before it would drain faster than the car charger would charge, so, I'm happy with what I have now.
Actually the problem is that some of the car chargers are not at 1amp output but less .75 or .85. Thats why your not really seeing an increase. The stock charger is at 1amp. I know AllGamer likes to use the Blackberry ones (which i believe are 1.5amps) Correct me if im wrong AllGamer.
So just look for 1 amp car chargers the cable doesnt matter itll hold whatever you attach it to.
So, no matter wht brand charger you have as long as you connect the two middle pins you will get full charge as long as the charger can put out 1000ma?
I really need a good charger for the car, right now i use a blackberry charger at work an it charges pretty fast. But i need to know how do i find the currect charge rate of a charger. Is there an app for that?

Im assuming this is something standard on all usb CHARGING cables as appose to data cables.?

For those of you buying the USB 12V Cigarette adapters read this.
Basically if you use a data sync cord with one of those adapters, unless it shorts the 2 data pins together internally (probably not) the phone is going to think it's plugged into a computer and only charge at 500ma (max output for a computer USB port). The write up above explains to short the 2 data cables together (this is done internally with the main AC charger head) back towards the phone so it will charge at 1amp instead of 500ma.
You can buy this cable and just modify it as described. I bought this USB adapter so I could charge 2 things at once.
Let me get this clear.
All i need to look for when it is charging is AC mode. As long as it says that, it doesnt matter what i have or have not done to the cables, AC mode is AC mode.
The charger i am looking at getting is 2.1 amp (because it has a spare usb port...so 1amp per line) and when i plug it in and it says AC MODE then its good to go right.
I just bought a TMOBILE offical charger that shows AC MODE, so when it MONOPRICE charger arrives i can compare. If it doesnt work its another 5 bucks, if it does i can take the tmo one back.
But again i am just wondering are there any caveats to AC MODE, or is it that once AC mode shows that is all that matters.

Efficient enough car charger.

Hi guys.
I have a problem finding good car charger for my phone while in car.
I either use sygic sat nav or Google maps but on top of that I stream music either via Google music or di.fm app.
Problem starts when I start streaming. My battery slowly drops down about 1% per 15min. I've tried various car chargers that have either 1amp, 2.1 amp and even dual 3.5amp they don't do the job. Only my HTC 1amp charger manages to hold the charge but it doesn't charge on top of that.
Any ideas and suggestions?

I think 1 amp is about all it will do. It will have a hard time keeping up if you are using it a lot. I have the htc car charger and it seems to keep up for me but actually getting a decent charge while using it will be hard.

I noticed this too, using a Kensington USB charger in the car. On my drive out to Phoenix, I noticed that having Navigation running while plugged in caused the battery to drain.
I also noticed that running Torque sucks the battery down as well. I stopped at a gas station that had a ton of gadgets, so I bought another off-brand USB adapter that stated its output is 1.5A. I also picked up the OEM extended battery at a VZW store while out there. It doesn't drain as fast now, but it does still drain a bit.
Motorola
Absolutely go for the motorola charger. I use it everytime in car, it's a 1A charger, has a nice blue light and can charge your phone even when using navigation.
And on top of that it's also cheap. I bought it in boundle with a motorola wall charger @ 10€.

Make shift cable.
If you're super cheap and/or like to DIY, I was able to get my Galaxy Nexus to recognize any USB charger as AC by cutting a USB extension cable in half. I then soldered/twisted the green and white wires within the USB cable together and then I soldered the red to red and black to black. By putting the modified USB extension in between the charger and a USB to Micro USB cable it will force the phone to recognize the charger as AC instead of USB. I sealed up my adapter with some White and Green heat-shrink tubing I had lying around so it would be easy to identify. Same thing can be done to a USB to Micro-USB cable if you want.

dedicated charger into my fuse box
note hooked up with mhl to my pioneer appradio 2
gps running, mhl running, bluetooth running. i use a screen off app to totally black out the screen.
now, this setup with my gs3 worked perfectly it would charge the gs3 like crazy as fast as a wall charger it seemed. with the note it will never increase in charge but at best maintain or slowly use charge. the power it is getting cannot keep up with all the tasks its doing.
now, i know this phone is a beast...but can anyone think of anything for me to try or buy to get this charging no matter what? i figure it may take custom kernals or something like that to finally get it done.
that being said - if you are using an android phone you absolutely must check out the pioneer appradio 2 with the appradio liberator app. you hook the phone up via mhl and with the app have full touchscreen control and mirroring of your phone on the 7inch touchscrreen radio display its pretty awesome.
I know the wall charger is a 2A rated charger....which is built for tablets. Perhaps attempt to locate a travel charger rated as such. I'm no scientist, or electritian so I cannot attest this will work, but just thought I would throw it out there

my chargers i the car claim to be 2a but doesn't seem to make a difference. hell, the one charger would chage an ipad in the past
most samsung tablets need an adapter to "trick" fast charging mode on non-samsumg chargers. otherwise it'll just trickle charge. i've not tried any yet but seems i may have to since the gnote2 is gonna need the same juice as my gn101. kinda what i expected since they're pretty much the same specs.
here's a thread to make your own adapter:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=845844
page 9 has a few links buy your own. just put .com in place of .co.uk on the ebay links.
here one for $3. ships from china so it may take a few weeks.
the stock AC charger supplied with the note 2 is 2A. I also have a 2A car charger. I cannot get the note to charge at any rate higher than 1A. Yes, i do know the trick to get the phone to go into fast charge mode. I have a feeling that 1A is the most we are going to get. Yes, if you have a ton of stuff running all at once you are going to use more than 1A and end up with a dead battery after a while. It does suck. My previous phone (Epic) would not charge beyond .5A. It died while on my car charger ALL the time. Hopefully this one wont die quite as often.

I've just ordered 3 of the $3 ones from deal extreme. it'll be a while before I can test it on a gn2. I'll try them on my gn10.1 as soon as they come in.

This seems like it'd be very easy to do yourself with an old mUSB cable.

Yes, the trick i use is to short the two data lines going to the phone NOT towards the charging source. If you do not do this the phone will be in USB mode which will only allow a charging rate of .38A. This seems to be an android/usb standard across almost all vendors. once i short the data lines that is when the phone will go into full charging mode. The highest i can get the phone to go is 1A and this is even with the supplied Samsung 2A charger. I have also tried an iPad charger and it still only produced 1A to the Note II.
The Note II also seems to vary the input current based on how much battery is left. If the Note is very low (i.e. 50%) it will go into 1A. If the battery is high (i.e.95%), the current will bounce around. I have seen it start at .5A, jump to .8A, then to 1A, then right back down to .5A and it will continue there until it reaches 100%.
Bottom line i have not seen anything above 1A

at least one of the adapters on the other thread claims 2A, but i don't think i've seen anyone with those results.
this is a pretty ridiculous problem for samsung to do nothing about is it not? the notion that you can't even charge your note in the car is a bit ridiculous. i wonder if someone makes a kernal with fast charging enabled if we'll be able to get around this

you can charge, just ridiculous slow. i occasionally charge my galaxy note 10.1 on my computer's usb when i'm too lazy to whoop out the charger. i do it a work where i know i won't use it for 8 hours.

You can't charge if you are intensively using the phone though. it loses charge.
Is there a specific car charger yet for the Note 2? I imagine this issue will be resolved with that charger.
People with the HTC Flyer/Evo View had similar issues. Unless we use HTC proprietary car charger, you lose power while plugged in. Standard usb chargers, charge it very slowly.

I am using the PowerGen Dual USB 3.1A 15w High Output Car Charger since it claims to be a 3.1A charger. What I thought was a fast charge was in reality not. Using the Current Widget app (which shows you the mAh) it registers 9882 mA for one of the usb slots and 10005 mAh for the other using the Galaxy Note 1.

so does that charger actually charge your phone then ?
Yes, just like a regular 1mA wall charger, but not like the 2mA one that comes with the Note 2.

Best/most reliable wall charger?

Every charger I use, breaks when I'm using my phone and charging.
So, is there any chargers that you guys recommend?

I personally use a 4 port Antec charger. Works quite well for charging everything I have.
i like the Antec too.
Because the Samsung wall Charger is broken I buyed a new one from Blackberry: http://www.amazon.de/BlackBerry-Pla...94529&sr=8-1&keywords=blackberry+ladegerät+2A
And now I'm verry happy with this one! I use it for all mobile phones with micro USB which we have @home
Ive been using all the micro usb chargers ive had since the days of my palm pixi, and all phone in between. Never have had any bad luck with any of them.

I've never had a wall charger break on me. I use older Samsung, LG and Blackberry micro-usb wall chargers without any issues. I actually only use the stock charger that came with the S3 as the micro-usb cable for my pc since I heard it's best to use the stock cable whenever you use Odin and I figure I may as well use it for phone to pc data transfers as well..
Did you guys ever tryed wireless charging?
Is this as good as a wall charger?
Well I did not even pick out wall charger from the box.
I have docking station near computer + audio docking station in bedroom and my phone is always charged when I need it.

Is this charger able to charge tablets. As far as I know, some tablets needs 12V output to be charged. For example Asus Transformer prime.
I got this one some time ago for my car. It's a kit with a wall and a car charger with 2 usb outlets from energizer. It does say it's for samsungs but this has charged just about anything (iphones, ipads, other phones, etc) that also had broken chargers, has never let me down for a few years now.
Both output 5V on 1A.
Haven't found a pic from the wall one, only the car charger.

This charger is strictly 5V. But it does have 2A outputs for more normal tablets.

I personally find wireless is slightly slower than wired, but it lets me keep my lifeproof case all sealed up all the time rather than wearing tjr seal, so it's perfectly worth the extra waiting.

using chargers with a higher amperage may not necessarily affect the battery immensely
however negative effects may be noticed over longer periods of time (battery swelling, accelerated loss of charge)

I would love to consider wireless charging but I'm still searching on what options are available. For now I switch between my original samsung charger and the Blackberry one. I hate the Samsung one because it slips out at any slight movement.
