[PSA] Make a recovery drive before upgrading to Windows RT 8.1 - Windows RT General

Just a PSA, make sure you guys create a recovery drive before upgrading to 8.1. It's currently the only way to reverse to 8.0 and get the ability to jailbreak back. They've made some obnoxious changes covered in THIS thread to block jailbreaking.
We're actively working on it (well, at least I am), but for now it's better to be able to downgrade than to bank everything on a new jailbreak popping up soon.

I've never tried. I have a lot of old 4GB USB drives lying around from trade shows, so I'm glad to put one to use.

I'm going to try creating a recovery drive from a Surface RT at work tomorrow, I assume this should work. I will keep everyone posted on my progress. I am attempting to downgrade my RT from 8.1, hope all goes well.

Success!!! Windows 8.1 RT Preview is GONE!!!!
Using the directions at the link below
http://www.microsoft.com/surface/en-us/support/getting-started/remove-windows-8-preview-from-surface
I had to re-do my partitions (Step 12)
But I am now running Windows 8 RT, the preview has been purged!!!!
If I can I will post the revcovery files when I return home!!!

That would be wonderful. Looking forward to your post. I thought I got used to 8.1, but there are too many crashes here and there that it got too annoying.
thanks

The updates yesterday have hosed my RT.
The fun started with the Touch cover randomly entering keys while the power cord was connected. I did a refresh and it went down hill from there. The not only was the Touch cover freaking out it also adjusted my screen brightness up and down every few seconds.
I tried a reset and now the RT is stuck in no activation hell.
So I tried my recovery USB to find it only goes in circles, asking language, keyboard layout, then goes to advanced start up menu again without doing anything.

No need to downgrade as no firmwares are available in test mode.
I'm assuming (can't verify though) that changing the appropriate registry key will enable test mode just as any previous versions. If it doesn't, then Samsung has probably abandoned test mode entirely, and there's really no point in being able to enable it.

Test mode still exists, they only removed the key combination and renamed the registry key. If you edit the registry, you can still enable test mode. The value has to be under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Samsung\FUS, be named "Setting_1" (formerly "FUS_TEST"), of type REG_DWORD and needs to be 1 for test mode and 0 for normal mode.

Alas, just the opposite, mine had been working just fine in W7/64 and this latest update seems to have killed itself, and now downgrading/uninstall/reinstall/windows restore all results in a crapped out Kies.

Please Help - Galaxy Nexus Root

Okay, so I installed the Galaxy Nexus tool kit and drivers. I successfully unlocked the bootloader with the program,
but when I go to root my phone, it almost completes the process, but goes into blue screen shortly after that says it needed to stop and says USB Driver 0.0000fe or something close to that, then reboots my computer mid nexus boot img download. I don't know why it won't let me root the device, it gets to "rebooting back to fast boot mode...flashing insecure boot image" then BAM...blue screen again. I'm about to give up on this struggle. Can anyone help me at all??
Well you shouldn't use the toolkit... Just use the fastboot commands. It wouldn't be that hard... it's also more reliable

Try and boot into safe mode in Windows and uninstall whatever drivers you have installed related to Samsung/Android/Nexus. Then install the drivers from here.
Can you boot your computer into safe mode?
Ps: rooting a gnex is a trivial process. What happened to you is uncommon and is related to your computer.

I was assuming it was the computer because it's the really old Windows XP 2003 version SP3, and is slower than dirt.
I just wish that this didn't happen, and maybe I should have stopped after the first blue screen because now my computer is corrupted.

home button not working on surface rt

hello,
i have a surface rt and my home button is not working. if i touch on it, the tablet responses witha vibration, but it wont go back to the modern ui overview.
on my tablet is windows rt 8.1 running and i cant reset it with a recovery partition (i downloaded one from the official microsoft page, but it is winrt 8.0).
have anyone a idea how to fix this issue ?
Did you try turning it off, then back on again?
---------- Post added at 08:43 AM ---------- Previous post was at 08:41 AM ----------
But seriously,
Might need to do a refresh. There was an updated firmware specifically for the home button yesterday.

i have all updates installed and turning it off and on doesnt help. i have the problems since middle of the last week, but hadnt had time to look at it further. if i try to refresh windows it says, that i should insert a recovery media. blame microsoft for "breaking" the refresh, reset option in windows 8.1
It appears MS may have removed the 8.1 recovery image. The link I have leads to 8.0.

i have downloaded the win rt 8.0 recovery image for europe but i cant reinstall windows with it.
(could the problem be, that my device was replaced a month ago from the ms support and it came back with winrt 8.1 preinstalled ? )
I had the same problem when I updated from 8 to 8.1 and needed to refresh. The process is jacked up and does not update the recovery partition to anything useable.
If you search all the articles that talk about the 8.1 recovery are now linking to the 8.0 download. Rather annoying.
I may have the iso at home for US, I'll have to check later.
so have anyone another idea to help me ?

Sticky keys can cause problems with the home button, if sticky keys is enabled it treats the home button as a windows button, so when you press it it'll 'hold' the home button forever.
Make sure sticky keys is turned off.

Read a zillion threads, nothing sticks

So I've rooted my phones for the last 5 years, nexus 1, droid, rezound, gs4, n5 and then the m8. finally i screwed up, and i was getting bootloops. in my slightly panicked state i managed to wipe the OS completely off of the device.
i can get into fastboot and from there also TWRP recovery. i've read a million threads, adb sideload, One_M8 all in one kit, etc....
I can't figure out how to now simply flash a stock ROM onto my device. can anyone spell it out in a way this idiot can get it? i;ve downloaded a gazillion things. i'm stuck. i had to go pay full retail for a phone because as a realtor i simply can't be without one even for a day. it's my lifeline. i'd like to fix this one so i can return the new one and save $700.
thanks.
When you say you wiped the OS, did you also clear the partitions? Are you booting into recovery by flashing TWRP and then booting into recovery... or are you booting into recovery via "fastboot boot"? If you have partitions still, you can use a USB OTG adapter and memory stick (or just sdcard) to store the firmware.zip file and flash it from TWRP.
IF, on the other hand, you wiped your partition table, you are in a bigger mess. It's possible a RUU can help, but I'm not familiar with them so can't comment beyond suggesting that you look into that more...

There is a DEV RUU out. You can use that. Or if you want ATT, or GPE, find the zips, and use fastboot commands to flash. If the computer can see the phone and you can issue commands, then there is nothing to worry about. Been there done that dozens of times with the M7. After playing with this M8, seems to be the same. Let us know where you are stuck, i.e. don't know the commands, or don't know where to find the zips.

i can't transfer files to the device, the pc recognizes it to give fastboot commands via a command prompt, but not as a removable device.
i'll get an sd card on my way home today and try flashing a rom using recovery.

very strange. after flashing and rebooting, i didn't have a clean install of Android, all my customizations and apps from before were installed. and i got the same random reboots. so all that info was still on the phone. went back into recovery and wiped everything, then re-flashed. now have a fresh clean install of stock 4.4.2
Thanks everyone! i kinda thought the sd card thing would be the easiest but the comments in this thread confirmed it and it worked.

There are the App versions you run on the phone, and there are the Windows and Mac versions you run on your PC. This is a run through on the Windows PC on how to restore your Firmware in case you've Borked your phone. I actually recommend you do this, even if you have not done anything wrong to your phone. My phone ran really hot, laggy, and the battery life was horrible. After flashing the stock firmware, it now runs cool, smooth, and fast.

Download HotSpot Shield's Free version and set your server to the Default US server, then try again. http://www.hotspotshield.com/
Thanks to @flameinthefire and his persistence to figure out the VPN fix.

The firmware wipe with the OTA included seems to have cleared my battery issues, even with root.
Will do shortly

Any chance to extract stock firmware
Thanks for this. I rooted my Edge and it was having the deep sleep issues so I needed to go back to stock and start over. I really hope the rooting issues will be fixed soon, but as of now going back to a fresh start isn't so bad.

Did you loose root after doing this ? Did you re-root if you did loose it ?
Yes, root is lost. No, I didn't re-root. Currently, I'm happy with how my phone is running. Others have rooted again and then replaced recovery with stock And they claim good results.
Thanks for this!! Just to verify, with this tool including the update, root still works correct? I came from att to t-mobile just so I could root this phone. So I want to make sure I'll be able to immediately root again lol! I haven't taken the update yet.

I personally have not rooted again after using this. Others have said they rooted again and the phone stayed working well. I believe they replaced the buggy Recovery with the Stock Recovery afterwards. Not sure if that has anything to do with stability or not.
I've install Smart Switch and my S6 Edge connects fine but when I click on more and Emergency software recovery and initialisation the app hangs (freezes) and does nothing. The app is non responsive it just sits there until I force close.

Maybe uninstall and re-install. That sounds like a software/pc issue.
Do you get the same thing if your phone is not plugged in? If it works without the phone plugged in, maybe try another cable. Or at least confirm you have the Original Samsung Cable being used.
I've done that several times already and it still does the same thing. Thanks for helping

What about right clicking on the Icon and Running as Administrator? Also, have you confirmed the drivers are installed correctly and showing in Device Manager when your phone is plugged in? "SAMSUNG Android ADB Interface"
My experience is less than perfect. I did a backup using SS, did the "emergency software recovery and initialisation", and then restored my backup using SS. The backup supposedly restored successfully, but all it did was restore my apps. My homescreen is not restored despite selecting all, nor are my 5 different google accounts restored. Wish I knew this would happen - I'd have thought twice about doing it....

That's good info for others. I set mine up as a new device when I went back. Only thing I recovered was my text messages.
I've found in the past that when recovering, it sometimes brings back the issues from before, so I rarely restore anything except messages. I take screen shots of my home screens and the app drawer so I can put it back manually as I had it. I find this gives me less future headaches.
Also, for what it's worth, the S6 is NOT the only phone I've had that benefits from a fresh flash when new. I've had Windows Phones and other Android Phones that run MUCH better afterwards. I make it a standard thing to flash them within the first couple days of getting them if it's possible. The outcome is often positive. On occasion, no difference has been noticed.
It fixed all of my phone problems AND the restore facilitated setting it up again without bringing back any of the original lag/clumsiness. Fantastic fix, thanks for sharing!
Can anyone confirm that there's no battery issues after a few days? Are you leaving VOLTE enabled?

I will say I think the battery is as good as it will get with this release of firmware. I leave all my radios on and VoLTE is enabled. With that said, it lasts nowhere near as long as an iPhone 6 or LG G2. So far I can live with how it's lasting, but I do hope it will be fixed in future releases.
