Over at the Microsoft Forums - Windows RT General

While making a question about 8.1 for RT I went to go look an see if I can answer some Unanswered questions. Came upon this and someone got really mad at Microsoft about third party applications. Laughed a little when I read it.. The person mentioned XDA so I posted it here so everyone can see it..

'n00b' Bashing

I'm fairly new to this forum, however have been a member of many other forums.
I find this forum quite interesting from the point of view that anyone who asks a question is in danger of being immediately flamed and potentially to the point of never returning.
I recently looked at a thread where someone asked a question that was answered somewhere else. Three members jumped on the bandwagon to flame to poor sod. Another member jumped in to defend the fact that people should be free to ask questions.
In the end, there were 12 replies to the question that, in that thread, was never actually answered.
12 posts just to discuss the relevance or appropriateness of the question that was not even answered.
Most forums I have been a member of have some very strict views on staying on topic. This reduces the flaming which seems to do more 'cluttering' damage that questions that have been already answered.
So if I have a question, I will STF only to find 42,000 topics on the same thing that don't actually answer anything, but discuss the "relevance or appropriateness of the question that was not even answered".
If the members, who should know better, stayed on topic then people would be able to readily identify the good threads more easily and not feel it nessesary to ask again... and again... and again.
So... Instead of flaming n00b questions that have allegedly been answered before, why don't the members of this forum look in the mirror and...
STAY ON TOPIC!!!
Note that I have posted this where I think this kind of discussion belongs... (i.e. not in any of the threads that actually deal with meaningfull discussions about phones).
Let the flames begin...
sounds like you are talking about the hermes wm6 forum... yes we know there is a problem... yes, we are working on it.. and there is already a thread for this.. so there was no reason to start another

STFU noob.
ok, I jest... but seriously, it did reach breaking point and something had to give... fortunately it's unwinding itself now.
Also to be fair to long time members though, every time a new OS version is out, the place is flooded with n00bs that usually don't even take the time to look at the threads presend on the same damn page.
It's beyond lazy, it's just ignorant to expect people to wipe their arse for them even if the toilet roll is right there in front of them.
Sometimes help is warranted and they get flamed, but when upgrading these expensive devices, they should take the time to understand more about it
Perhaps we should have an aptitude test before allowing access to the forums hehe.

Gee... Hermes forum? How'd ya guess
I tried STF for a thread on this, but couldn't decide what to search on: n00b? Flame? Agro? Dummy spit? Ignorant?... So many choices
But okay... I've had my say so I'll pull my head in and get back to my life.
By the way... Great forum and wiki. Very helpful and informative.

Same thing can be observed in the prophet forum too, lately. Once a new OS is out for the device the same questions are flooding over and over again. And it's surprising to see that the so called noobs who just started "annoying" the others are flaming the next generation of noobs who introduce themselves with the same kind of "new and unanswered" questions. The people are not stupid, but the are lazy a... I have the feeling that certain forums are laking of active moderators who maintain order when necessary.
While I think it's important to encourage all members (yes I've seen a few senior members asking things that have been previously discussed in the same thread) I think the whole attitude about it is wrong. There's really no need to get all pissy about it, and much less calling people "noob". Really someone that goes off on a noob rant can't have much of a life in my opinion. We are all busy -some more then others- and we really don't want to waste time answering redundant questions, but isn't going off on someone and calling them a noob an even worst usage of our valuable time? besides..... who really gives a rats ass about getting called a noob.
In closing, if you feel a noob is bothering you, ignore him and he might eventually get the point, or behave like a human beign and help the guy out. However, as BaggyG says don't turn the damn thread into a name calling fiasko. One 20 word post asking a question is not as irritating as a 500 word essay on the stupidness of noobs.

since i dont frequent the prophet forum's and im not sure who our active mod(s) are for prophet, if you would let me know what threads need to be moderated i will be more than happy to flex my muscle in there.
and actually on that note....
If anyone see's anything anywhere on this board that needs to be moderated then please either report the post or shoot me a pm or any of the other mods and i will be more than happy to do what i think is necessary with the thread or posts.

Just wondering if it would be possible to put an announcement or sticky on each forum identifying the mods for that particular forum.
Just a though...

Damn. I saw the title and thought "Man, that'd be fun!" and everyone in here is complaining about it? (joking).
Seriously though it is a problem. But everyone here can do something about stopping it. I mean, if you know there is a solution to the question they asked and it's somewhere else in the forums, give them a link and tell them how to find these answers. If you don't know exactly where it is, tell them what forum to search. At the very least, say nothing. When people only read the last page of a thread it is very annoying but those are best ignored. There is absolutely no need to publicly flame someone and waste even more space on a thread.
I'm currently working on a bug tracking system for new roms so hopefully that will reduce a lot of these kind of questions by keeping answers with the questions and moderators and chef's being able to easily delete repeated posts.
It's just a bit of common courtesy which is as sadly lacking as common sense at the moment unfortunately.

one of the other things is the sheer VOLUME of replies, in the Hermes section, there are over 250 replies in a couple of threads! not meaning to sound lazy, but that is a hell of a lot!!!
of corse i'm reading them and reading repeat after repeat of questions that are the same.
Its great when the #1 topic poster goes through the posts and copies soloutions to problems and presents it in the 1st post!
hmm think thats covered just about everything on my mind

Y'all have to admit. Some of the "senior" members here have this god complex.
Once they manage to have their devices run unofficial stuff - even if it isn't their own work, and they were just following simple instructions, which don't really take much work once you get down to it - they think it gives them every right to go Bastard Operator From Hell to just about anyone else.
I guess it's pretty normal for unofficial channels, innit - I see the same kind of folks in emulation and driver forums. Not to mention linux and hardware boards. But some of the "ascended" here ought to remember that they didn't start as gods, and may not really be that much of a "god" after all.
You know there are noobs and then there are noobs.
Take a look at this thread. If every novice would put half the effort in as this guy did we wouldn't be having this dessication at all.
Don't get me wrong, I do not support flaming (well maybe with some small exceptions) and say what you will about senior members but at least all those guys who "just followed simple instructions" had the sense to go find and read those instructions.
So can your really blame someone who spent time reading and learning when he sees the forum flooded by people who expect to be walked through something step by step without bothering to put in even a minimum effort?
No, dozen responses that don't answer the question are not the solution, but hey everyone needs to went somehow.

I agree. There's WAAAAYY too much "how do I. . ." posts in the forums when all the information is already there for READING. More stickys at the top of the forums won't solve the problem, because the ones that are there WITH the information are not being read by the noobs even now.
It's really sad for me to see the direction that this board has taken in the past year. When I first registered, it was an AWESOME site with LOTS of users developing useful tools and apps to make these devices even better . . . a place to share ideas and to try out the cooked ROMs.
Then, we had an influx of new users about 6 months ago that simply couldn't -- or WOULDN'T -- search for answers before posting. Now, the board is so bloated with those useless posts/threads that it's a nightmare using the search function anymore.
While I still come here daily to check the General section and the Wizard section, I don't do much posting and only read the threads of general interest to me. I'll help where I can on answering questions -- but only if they haven't already been asked a gazillion times before. I still look for the tools and apps from the developers here to keep tweaking my phone to get the absolute MOST out of it, and I've flashed more ROMs from this site than Quaker's got oats. -- and all without asking "how do I. . ." or "I've bricked my phone. . . " because I READ THE INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE DOING ANYTHING!!!
It's really that simple. All you have to do is READ and FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS -- step by step. Don't skip a step or leave anything out, and it works!!!
that it's a nightmare using the search function anymore.

As much as I see your point, I have only 2 words to say. "Vicious Cycle".
I'm also a noob but i dont care because i know my options, first do a search ( which by the way is pratically unusable, but not only here all foruns have this problem), but in a community so big it´s comprehensive cause sometimes the answer to the problem is two threads bellow or in the next page, but no let´s open another thread asking the same thing, and i know that such attitude will lead to saturation of the older members.
The answer is simple if someone is in the mood answer if not leave it, until the users realize their options to search for things this will never end.
I'm glad to be here because above all it's a learning place for the ones who enjoy this platform and the ones who just like to know about varied stuff.
Cheers and have a nice weekend
yes thanks everyone for all thr help and advice. Keep it up!
Peace out
Registration fees
To alleviate the amount of worthless posts and to give something back to those that dedicate so much time and effort to this forum (rom cookers, admins and mods) why dont we add a registration fee to this forum?
Just a thought, but I would happily pay an annual fee of 20 eur / 15 GBP for this forum.
Searching
I think that quite a lot of the problem is with how difficult it is to get answers out of the forum search facility if you're not used to it.
Could it be possible to add a dumb-ass version that's the default?
There have been no end of times in the past when i've been searching for info on upgrading and I have to trawl through hundreds of irrelevant posts (most of them telling people to go to other posts that don't have the right info on them).
Also, back in the day there was a lot more info on the wiki section relating to the upgrading/modding etc but now (understandably given the number of devices available) the information only seems to be in the forums.
I like the idea of having a sticky in each thread listing useful articles on common topics. I bet no one will bother to read them though.
I still think my library illustration I gave over at TC stills says it best.
We all know the library is full of info on so many things you could want to know. And we all know what's expected of us in a library; go find the book on the subject. If you have trouble finding the answer, then ask your question.
I think where so many go wrong is thinking that they can just walk in to the library and start asking questions from whoever just happens to be there, rather than first trying to find the answer for themselves in the variety of books available.
And what's wrong with someone who at first was a noob - asking repeated questions - and then learning what's expected of them, and then expecting the same from others? You got told to be quiet in the library, at first you were offended, and then began to realize the benefit, and then inturn expect the same from others.
I really don't expect people to figure it out. Call me a pessimist or call me a realist.
Oh, by-the-way, have you noticed that this kind of topic always results in long, drawn-out posts?

who gets a thrill out of being a D*** to people?

I just wanted to post because i see on most threads theres usually someone has to be a cheeky arrogant **** to someone that is simply asking for help and doesn't have much knowledge.
My understanding was you came here for help and support and to try and help others is it not? But yet, when people ask for help they often get slaughtered for various reasons such as: wrong section, repeated thread, not searching properly, using the wrong punctuation etc (the last one was exagerated a bit but it wouldnt surprise me)
Basically before i came here years ago I would not have even known what Root is/does, why you would flash different ROMs etc and i have learned everything thanks to XDA and the various genious' that make it all possible.
I just dont think its right the way some people THINK they can talk/treat others and it is certainly uncalled for.
For example when i first came here I had the Xperia X10 and was very interested in the work and came across a problem when flashing someones ROM but I didnt have enough posts to reply so had to start a thread in General asking for help and the response i got you think i had just launched a nuke and killed thousands.
I know i will probably get slaughtered for this but basically i think this is a problem that should be addressed and no one else will say anything about it so i will!
And one final thing i cant understand. What could possibly make you feel good about making a **** out of others??? If you are one of these people could you kindly do me a favour and go play chicken with an incoming 12 Gauge Round from point blank range. That is all
i know some.. i can name them too.. neh, they know themselves..
Yup, one of my pet hates when the more experienced members on sites (not just here) are rude to new members.
We all started out once, treat people the way you would like to be treated!

Use Search, you'll save thousands (of posts).
You could've used search and save us from another thread talking about helpful people
It relieves stress being a **** to others online knowing you won't get shot for it afterwards. Words from a stranger can't hurt enough for it to be an actual problem can it? There are now two active similar threads on this issue.

Quoted for truth.
When I joined XDA I took a couple days and just searched for what I needed, learned as much as I could and THEN asked questions.
The problem here is many of the veteran users are tired of people coming in, and in their first ever post asking for something that if they literally did 5 minutes of searching would find.
As well if you are not technical or its hard for you to understand what you're doing and why, you should reconsider rooting your phone as there is nobody but this place to come help you fix it if you screw up. And while yes it is simple to do, its also easy to screw up.
So the vets see these people come in, ask (or sometimes demand) step by step instructions because they have no clue, and have proven they can't take 5 minutes to try and figure it out themselves. They are now jaded to it after it happens at least 4 or 5 times a week, so cut them some slack.
Answer me this. Would you go out, buy a Corvette, then decide you want to supercharge it so you go to the local corvette club meet. Walk in and say "which of you guys is gonna tell me exactly how to put this supercharger on my car, and I've never turned a wrench in my life." Seriously, what happens here is the digital equivalent.

+1. I find it much faster/easier using google to search xda than the actual xda search function.
I also did the same as Rogue Leader. I spent a few days scanning through alot of threads before posting and i found most of the answers i were looking for.
Everyone understands that newbs have to start somewhere (since i was a newb/still am lol when i got the xplay) but surely most people will have been on a fourm before? Or have used google to search before? No excuses really.
In the time it takes for someone to reply or after the flaming has stopped they could have easily found the answer they were looking for.

What you decide to do or not to do does not depend on others action or doing here on xda. You choose to be rude and a ****. How come you feel this resentment. You most have an anger problem and they are just easy targets for ventilating that agro. Who are you to judge others wheter they derserve a flaming or not. You clearly state your own level of knowledge in your own post and you can whine all day long and lay the responsebility on them for you being a ****. I'm gobsmacked over people like you, you take as little responsebility as the multi posters does. Learn how to behave or shut up and don't bloody answer nor look in those threads. Do yourself that favor.

That one was definitely me... But, I am pretty sure I didn't have those mistakes in the original post.
That could have all been me But that definitely was a time when there was like 100 threads asking the same question and you decided to make a whole new thread even though there were several threads just below yours that had already been answered.
I am one of those people who actually will ask google before asking the internet for answers, and it has saved me a lot of flames.
ALSO, you posted the same thread twice, maybe three times and I fkn hate people who think they will get more attention by the continuous posting of the same question! Just like the 12 year old who has been posting multi-threads asking how to fix his wi-fi in all the forums.

Anal beads run Android? Man droid really does do "everything"!
But when you type in your "title" when you create a new thread, other threads with the same name pops up. So if you start typing like "How do i ROOT my xperia play?" I'll promise you that some threads about the exact same topic will pop up
if you want to use google search inside the xda forum, use this chain in google: "site:http://forum.xda-developers.com/" + the thing you want to search. For example:
site:http://forum.xda-developers.com/ rooting xperia play
Of course, this applies to any other website.

Help and respect

I myself am new here, and im amazed at how great this site is. I've gotten everything i could have ever asked from here and am so greatful for the Dev's here - Your work never goes unnoticed, thanks!
However, i've been noticing people who are just absolutely rude and explosive with some people's questions...
Im talking about:
"Did you even Google or Search the damn site before posting? I mean for Christ's Sake what is wrong with you people? Can't even do a damn Search. Learn how to do shiz on your own man. " ... For example
1) People do searches but dont end up finding what they want
2) Keywords make all the difference. Maybe a keyword was why they didn't find what they want.
3) They just didn't find what they wanted.
Now, if you usually look at the person who posted an "ignorant question", look how many posts they have.
Usually little, maybe 20 or less.
The posts will usually be questions
They just want help. Great people who help here.
But honestly, people tell me to come here for help, and i do. I get my help, thankfully.
I had a different account here before, where i was asking for a SPB Shell feature... I looked everywhere, couldn't find it. I was yelled at, and someone told me it was on i think page 76 of a thread, which i tried searching...
76 pages X 10 posts per page = 760 posts. i COULD HAVE missed it.
If you want to help, do so by all means. But consider where the person is comming from. Help them, but please don't be rude. Imagine what the effect it has on the person..
Thanks!

This is a question, so should be in the "Q&A" forum, not here - although I'm sure a Mod will move it quickly enough.
I'm not going to answer your question as it took me less than 10 seconds and Google to find the answer - so I'm sure you can do the same.

Exactly the same link I put under the word "Google" on my post - if the OP had been bothered to look.
I get pi$$ed off with people on here who claim to have searched - when it is so obvious that they haven't at all.
What it comes down to is they actually don't know how to word the search correctly so as to get a decent result.

Sir,
I know how to search and az I told I searched before open the topic :|
but it's obscure :|
read this page:
nfcworld.com/nfc-devices/motorola-droid-razr/
-----------------------
The Motorola Droid Razr has not been advertised as an NFC handset, but a teardown has revealed it carries an NXP PN544 NFC controller chip.
-----------------------
and comments that is it's below:
Q: Yea, but are we saying that with ICS the RAZR will have NFC enabled?
A: I don't think anyone knows the answer to that yet...
So........
you don't have to learn I do :|
but it's obscure, so I ask it

I think that you have answered your own question as well as anybody on XDA possibly can. Nobody knows - although the chip is in the phone, it may never be accessible to software, whether it is GB, ICS or JB.

So if I'm reading all of this correctly, you're magic 'Google search'(Complete with the extra douche topping of your little animated superiority video) produced no actual answers? God forbid that someone comes onto an Android developer's message board to find out if someone here has an inside scoop, so to speak.
Not everybody is as mighty with the Google as you are, not every Google search returns the same result. You have to word your searches correctly, and some people are bettet than others. It used to be that you came onto message boards and could ask a question like this and the answer would be 'Well, it looks like the phones have the proper hardware, but it's going to require an OS level bit of code before anyone can use it, and nobody has given an actual timeframe for when this will be done, if ever.'. Now, it's a bunch pf snarky A-holes trying to see who can deliver the killing blow.
It was a legitimate question, and this was a legitimate forum to post it in. Your special Google search still didn't really answer the question, and it didn't answer the question from the perspective of Android developers, who would be MY first resource if I were looking, too. If you don't like the question being asked, then for God's sake, don't read the fracking thing. There is no law of physics that dictats that you can't pass up a post on here without reading it. I don't really understand people like you who get their panties in a twist because someone posted a question on a message board. How did this question being posted here impact your life? Me, U can't stand condescending rude people, especially in places where people go for help, so I like to call them out on it.

I'm awfully sorry to have offended your sensibilities, but who the f**k do you think you are? You sign up to XDA and the very first post you put is to resurrect a thread that is 3 1/2 months old - not to contribute anything useful, but simply to try and pick a fight?
I actually commented on the OP predominantly because it was clearly in the wrong forum - that is what the Q&A or the device specific forums exist for.
I also ended the thread with;-
I think that you have answered your own question as well as anybody on XDA possibly can. Nobody knows - although the chip is in the phone, it may never be accessible to software, whether it is GB, ICS or JB.

which is no different to what you just posted. It is obvious that the OP doesn't use English as his first language, so trying to get all technical is of no use. The OP 'Thanked' me for my post, so he obviously had no problem with it, and he hasn't been back on here since as he is one of the many who sign up here, ask one question and are never seen again.
As for your comment about the XDA Noob Video, I didn't create that, but I personally feel that everyone who joins XDA should be forced to watch the entire thing and read the whole page of forum rules as well so that this place was able to keep to the goodness it has achieved and maybe lose a lot of the people who sign up nowadays simply to demand answers as they feel they are 'entitled' to an immediate response from people who help out on here for free in gaps from real life.
Righto, that's enough. Question answered, playtime over.

[Q] (READ PLEASE) Why is everyone a big DOOOSSHH?? (yes I know what i did there)

My goodness lol I know a lot about hacking, my phone, roms ,general troubleshooting and a lot of other things and also a lot about forums and the vermin that live in them. I just don't say much because I never was a forum posting guy I'm a do it my self guy. Throwing "NOOB" around to some guy/girl that just wants to know how to operate or troubleshoot his/her galaxy that he paid a great deal for is b.s. I read countless a** hole replies that don't even answer the question, a lot of the answers are just failed attempts to sound like the "cool" sarcastic guy that sits in the back of a remedial math class. I've been coming to xda since I had a g2 (never registered) and slowly and slowly the community is turning from people that would kind of help you to d**ks with a false sense of entitlement that reply with a totally unreasonable response. Yeah it's common knowledge to a lot of people but some people really don't know what they are doing and don't want a brick and need the help of this lovely community. I'm not ranting its just my opinion on whats CLEARLY going on if you don't like it f*** off and go fly a kite.
I do not support smart guys who constantly ask eta questions though.
The problem I see is that, as you say, these people don't know what they're doing and want the information handed to them.
I've never seen a post get a BAD response when the person clearly outlined their problem and explained what they already knew and why their research wasn't getting them anywhere.
The people that DON'T make posts like that need to do some research - not just have the information thrown at them for their own good. Think about if you just gave someone information on how to build and operate a bomb without them knowing how it worked and how to do it safely. Sure, they're probably not going to lose fingers - but they could brick an expensive device and it's kinder to give some tough love and pointing in the direction of research, knowledge, and understanding before they make a mess that they can't get out of.
In the words of H.P. Lovecraft : "Do not call up that which you can not put down".
Yeah I know what your saying and I agree. Just that some people ask questions live what boxes should I check in Odin, whats a zip lol, should I wipe b4 or after, what original dev, how do I root. Those a simple questions and they are common knowledge to a lot (maybe not how do I root because many things can go wrong if you derp it up). These can get simple responses or links but ppl will post turd responses like noon read the op, we answers that in 2011 look it up, just don't root. Stuff like that I'm not saying go in to depth with a dude asking about something when he doesn't ever know the dos, don'ts and risk. I know I'm not the only one there's threads about it.

I agree 100%. The thing that irritates the F out of me is the few that run around here acting like they know it all... Then ***** and say search, then like each others post for being asshats to someone who asked a simple question that deserved a simple answer. I do occasionally call them out but it doesn't do any good.

Lol yeah one guy asked does any one know where I can find the inverted YouTube I'm new.. A did responded Noob you'll find it in a different section. Thank me for the help.
Then a civilized guy posted a link to the apk (which is simple to find for the average user) and said to the guy above something like I think this is what you meant to do but the xda douche in you did not allow it.

Because they think they are cool when in reality they are more noobish than the person they are replying to. There's a simple if you don't have anything good to say dont say nothing at all...but I guess their mamas didn't teach them that common sense.
For some reason they rather reply being a total dipsh*t than simply IGNORE the post. Don't get me wrong some of the replies Realy are deserving like the ones when the person constantly whines about their problem and want to b*tch aT the dev...most of the time noobs...such as my self just want simply answered because we've search and couldn't find the answers or we found an answers but it pertains to another device.
They probably didn't get much love from high school so wants to be the cool jogs here

From the moderator
To all in this thread.......
Most of the moderators would appreciate it if everyone were considerate, kind and patient........BUT......... that said,
Some do act with arrogance and inconsideration, ......report them we are here to assist.
Understand that the important responsibilities of a member is to Read enough that they can understand what to ask and how to ask it.
One of the overriding problems with XDA is we (the members) are not from one country, or one culture..so, many have to use Google translator or some other method to post in in English.
This creates an additional layer of misunderstanding, which in turn, makes things even more complicated.
Couple all of this with have a bunch of adolescent kids posting as well..... and now you have described XDA.......
So, with this explanation......it basically means to be patient, polite and considerate and when others begin to troll, or flame report them, this keeps these inconsiderates participation to a minimum
Unfortunately, this is thread is way to prone to escalating a flame-war....
Thank you for posting and "venting" off some of the common frustration we all feel from time to time....
...........THREAD CLOSED..........
