[Q] S4 and Conductive stylus on soft "menu"&"back" button - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S 4

I have:
1) Tmobile S4 (M919) White
2) Galaxy Tabâ„¢ Conductive Stylus ($19.99 now)
3) OEM wireless charger back cover
4) MIME ghost glass version 2
5) Spigen Neo Case
Using finger, the screen and soft button work all the time.
Using Stylus on the screen works all the time.
But there is a problem on "soft button" with "stylus"
1) sometime the stylus works with "soft button", but sometime won't.
2) sometime it works for 15mins or less then stop working on "soft button"
3. in order to have it working again, i have to turn the screen off then on. (but not 100% will bring it back to works)
I also tried with an aftermarket capacitive stylus that it used to works with my ipad 1, the same thing happened.
Do anyone have any idea about this? any physic behind this? thannk you.

The soft buttons aren't meant to be used with a stylus. Unless you have the galaxy note 8, then you are out of luck. The stylus is functional on the screen but not the capacitive buttons..

But how come it does work sometime? 99% of time it will get back to work after the screen off and on?

Works fine for me every time. And I have a 99 cent stylus

have you installed a glass type screen protector on your S4?

Ah, no i haven't. That might be your issue. The stuff on the tip of the stylus might not be strong enough to reach the capacitive buttons as the screen uses a different sensitivity level.

yeah, that's what i thought too. but it does work for few minutes after the screen on, so it's hard to conclude that the issue is solely caused by the screen protector. Maybe the sensitivity level on the "soft botton" is decreasing over time, has more sensitive right after it turned on.

Go into your display settings and check the box next to High touch sensitivity.. see if that helps the sensitivity issue

I tried it, but it makes no difference, maybe it's for the screen only?
But if i am lucky, i can bring it back to works for once if i keep tapping it with 2x more force. what i mean is, it will works on one tap after i tapped it for more then 10 times.
maybe the heat accumulated between the "soft button" and the screen protector is causing the reduction in sensitivity.

anyone has any idea?

3 phones within 1 month..lol

First nexus had a charging port issue...Verizon sent me a refurbished one..Second phone had the lower section of screen sunk in and soft keys not responding to touch...third phone received today wouldn't call out or take calls but data was working..went straight to where i bought it tried 2 new sim cards level 2 tech support with employee......to find out if you go through 3 phones you can receive a new one that's what they did for me.....how can Verizon send these refurbished phones out when there supposed to meet regulations a pass a certain requirement before releasing these?...wow

Wow. Sorry to hear that. Thankfully mine appears to be working great and no sunken screen here.

I'm on my second nexus the first had a bad battery and store replaced with new one so far so good. Of course I was only into my Verizon contract by one week lol

Could you elaborate more on the "sunken screen" problem?
The soft keys on my Nexus doesn't seem to be responding too well. Turning on the "Show touches" under developer options indicate that the touch area of the screen where the soft keys are is not as accurate as the rest of the screen.
Thank you.
i know..i had Motorola Droid,Droid x,and x2...then just went Samsung i waited for this phone for months...this phone is the best i think....its the Verizon inspection dept that stinks releasing phones not being fully inspected and tested..lol...

If you go to developer options and click on show touches, you can see that the touch response near the bottom edge of the screen (where the softkeys are) is less as accurate as the response on the other parts of the screen. This is not a software issue related to the softkeys because if you go to the browser and rotate so that the softkeys are near the earpiece, the same inaccurate response issue can be seen.
Anyone else have this problem?
To me the sensitivity on the soft keys seems a little less responsiveness ..i was playing around with the apps that show sensitivity on press and touch locations seems to me there not the same from the soft key area and right above it..or is it just me?.......

The second phone i received from Verizon was refurbished the screen was not flush with the case almost as if the screen was sunken in more then the top half..i should have been more specific ..they took it back though..so. i was happy

You see this only on your third device? For me, the touchscreen is less sensitive when it is close to the edge of the screen (near soft key area).
I wonder if i have a faulty device or if that's the way the hardware was implemented

S Pen - Is this normal?

I noticed today that my S Pen does not actually mark where I touch the screen. This is not that significant in portrait but it marks and points a very noticeably 3 mm above where my pen is actually pointed. Is this normal or is my S Pen/ Note defective?

If you are a lefty make sure you go to the S-pen settings and set it for left handed use

I hoping you find a solution thats exactly why I moved from the Note 1 to the SG3 since it was driving me nuts. I had been told the Note 2 does not have the issue so I was going to get my Note 2 later this week.
If you notice, hover the pen above the screen and push the spen inwards with your finger it writes without even touching the screen.

I must say that if that was the case I would go to AT&T and demand they fix it or give me a new one! (Same thing if it wrote before I touched the screen!!) I just tested both of these things and it marks exactly where I place the pen, and does not do so until I am actually touching the screen! (very lightly!) I paid way too much (even though it was only 199 that is still a lot 4 me!) for it not to work exactly as I want it!

Ya. I noticed that a few days ago. Cool stuff

I think it may have been in an app I was using, because it does not go into landscape. It is still not exact but I think that is just the way it works for human error. It works as far as I am concerned. I will test more before running to ATT

Spen fix
To fix the hovering issue u can pop off the spen button with an exact blade or a box cutter blade. You will see two pentiometers. Having the top point to the left, use a fine flathead screwdriver and turn it clockwise an 1/8th of a turn each time or to ur liking. The left pentameter is for sensitivity of the spen. And the right one decreases the distance and sensitivity of the pen of it hovering above the screen causing it to write automatically. There are posts on this matter however I can't find the link anymore. Just Google it. "how to decrease sensitivity of spen for note 2.". I did this to my brothers and my own spen already and all is well. Note the button when prying out WILL fly out so watch your eye and do this in a well lit and clean Area. To put the button back on, just insert the side closest to the tip of the spen first then click in the back side. Hope this helps us guys.

[Q] S-pen thickness different on edge

Hi,
Has anyone noticed or is my device somehow broken but it seems that when i draw near the left side of the screen it will be much more narrow than on center or right side. Defect screen maybe?
my friend had a similar problem, but in his case there was a circle the size of 1/10 the screen that did not respond to any pen input, he was sending it in for a replacement, it turned out that he had a magnetic cover(similar to the smart cover on the ipad) which somehow screwed with the spen input, as soon as he took off the cover everything worked normally, this might probably be your case too
This device has a "wacom" screen . It means thet if you press the s-pen the line is! thicker
try it open a s-note and drow 3 lines
1 realy press on the s-pen
2 normal presere
3 try to move the s-pen as lite as posible

Yeah i know. I tried to press little as possible or same amount but still it makes different thickness on left edge than center. I can make same amount on edge too, but i have to press much harder. I dont have any magnetic cover and this problem started suddenly when i was writing sms message.
Should the end of s-pen be bit loose?
Added after edit: There is little difference on thickness when i press really hard. Tried s-note and sms message. There is difference, but its really really small difference.
Are you using a cover that has a magnet on it?

S-pen sensitivity question (too Iow sensitivity?)

Hello,
I got Samsung Galaxy Note II since a week now and I noticed that the s-pen does not register the weakest (lightest) touch, like when I'm gliding with the pen over the screen (the pen's tip is touching the screen but barely). I'm used to very light touch, so when I'm drawing a line sometimes it does not register at all or there is some part of it missing.
Is this normal? Maybe I just need to learn to press it a bit harder. I found a lot theads about s-pen being too sensitive, maybe I need to calibrate it but the other way? Also I found some threads with the same question but no answer.
Regards,
Dragon
You can adjust the sensitivity by popping off the button on the side of the pen and turning the screw below it. Keep in mind that the way the s pen detects a touch is when the nib on the end is pushed in, so depending on how light you use it, increasing the sensitivity too much might cause false positives (registering touches when to pen isn't touching the screen)

Thank you for the reply D3_. That explains a lot. I guess I'm just pressing it too lightly. I will just have to get used to pressing it a bit harder.
You can still try adjusting the sensitivity, you might be able to find a sweet spot that works just right for you.

You got your s pen very low sensitivity but but mine is too sensitive. Even 1 to 1.5cm to the screen it still writing something that I don't need. I cant draw anything. I have been waiting for new s pen from Samsung to replace old one for a month. Hooe to have a very good s oen thus time.

The sensitivity on mine just changed randomly?
Causing a real problem with swipe.
I have to swipe real s l o w l y....
Any ideas why this might have happened?

Read my post above (second post in this thread) on how to change your s-pen sensitivity. You probably don't need a new one.

How can you pop the button out?
And will it impact warranty?

Just got my note 2 today (YAY). The s-pen registers when I am barely touching the screen...how do I pop the button w/o breaking anything? Will this possibly change, or stay the same, on DN3?

Weird S-Pen

I don't use my S-Pen too often, but since yesterday it becomes too sensitive it start to draw before I touch the screen.
I tried my spare (purchased separately) S-Pen and do exactly the same behavior.
Any clues?
My note 2 is Un-Rooted.
No changes, no drops, same LCD protector, no magnets.
I trird

Got the same issue and resolved it by hitting several times the stylus on a surface that won't damage it like a pillow or your hand if you can bear it. Hit firmly but apply reasonable strenght though. Repeat until issue is gone. To clean the stylus may help too.
It can be your tip of the pen that's stucked...

It's very common. you'll need to adjust the potentiomenter on the pen. See here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2191333
That worked, but seems I'll need a new S pen, this one now is all time as eraser

I believe you can adjust the sensitivity of the pen by removing the button on the s pen and adjusting the screw underneath.
