Hi guys,
My beloved S3 is is > 1 year old now.
I was always afraid\skeptical of rooting it as it lead to void warranty
Since it is already > 1 year old and warranty does not come into picture now, I thought why not give it a try now..
I see many S3 users are more than efficient after root.
Should I go for it ?

Rooting is a must. I went for root the day i got the phone and went reading up on rooting the S3, roms, etc. before i even got the phone.
first thing i did when i got my s3 in april was root it. and my dad has the same phone i have, and i have to say having mine rooted vs his stock, mine gets so much better battery life. and is just one of the perks of rooting other than overclock and underclock and custom roms and stuff.
...and Sammy phones are fairly fool proof when it comes to rooting and flashing

I just want to go slow, I want to unlock the boot loader first & then uninstall all the att crap..
that should free up some space n RAM..
Later on I can install custom ROM's and Kernels if need be..
This can be done right...
First thing you should do is make a backup of your stock unmodified system before you remove or erase anything or install roms. And also make a copy of the backup to a second location like a computer.

S3 doesn't have a locked bootloader. Reality just have to flash a rooted stock firmware in Odin and you are good to go.

4) if required i will flash custom rom and kernel else i will stick with everything stock..
The reason I want to stop at unlocked boot loader is that as of now I already have 4.1.1, and I have read everywhere that 4.1.2 isn't much of a revolution so why flash a custom ROM. People might not agree with this but I tend to think so...

Don't even think about touching anything dealing with bootloaders.
The i747 comes with an unlocked boot loader, the only one that is locked is the Verizon S3.
There have been various bricked S3 by trying to "unlock" something that isnt locked.
Read read read and search and research.

No I am not talking about just backing everything up with titanium backup. I am talking about backing up your stock untouched system with a custom recovery like twrp or clockwork recovery. After root you will most likely have a custom recovery installed like twrp. You can boot into this custom recovery and backup the entire system in its current state, because sometimes when certain system apps are removed you will get force closes and bootloops and the only way to restore your phone is by restoring a backup, flashing a rom or pushing a system to your phone via odin.
Removing stock apps that came with your phone can be risky at times because they are often tied to other systems. Search to see what apps are safe to remove and a system backup is probably good.

Do not attempt to unlock the bootloader! It is unlocked already. Your proper plan of action should be:
Backup everything possible (MyBackup is what I used)
Root phone (several methods available, choose one)
Install custom recovery. Rom Manager can install CWM for you, while goo manager can install TWRP (I prefer twrp)
Follow instructions for installation off any Rom you download (found in the first post of that Roms thread, usually before you get to the dl link)
Before flashing or attempting any mod, make a back up of everything. And read the directions

The cool thing for you will be all the awesome tweaks and mods that have out in the last few months because you device is a little elderly. Check out the definitive mod thread in the T-Mobile S3 forum. I forget which thread its in. You can atleast double battery and speed and 20x the customization options. Once you flash a new rom it becomes a habit called flashaholism so be aware. My name is Bubba Fett and I'm a flasaholic.
Finally I did it,, My Galaxy S3 is rooted successfully..

There is no best ROM it all depends on the user. Feel free to try any of them. Just make a Nandroid backup each time before you flash a new one and follow the devs installation instructions. Good luck and have fun!

I've tried Cyanogenmod, PAC, and AOKP in the past week. All three are butter smooth and stable. You will have to cycle the battery a couple of times for it to fit in (I noticed upon initial flash, battery life was terrible).

So after having my evo for awhile ive finally decided to go root.
But i do have a couple of questions that i want to clear up.
1st i plan to use unrevokeds one click root method(going the newb way out here)
but my question from there is once i root will i still be able to boot into my stock rom or will i have to flash a custom rom? I want to flash custom roms eventually but i have yet to pick one.
2 From there whats some really good roms to use. ive been looking around but all of them seem to have a lot of bugs that need worked out and im not all about buggy roms lol.
3 Whats a nand unlock?

you cant flash custom roms without a nand unlock.
the two levels of rooting
1) basic system root, letting you run root only apps
2) nand, allowing you to flash custom roms and whatnot.
most people start of with fresh or whatever unrevoked gives you.

Yes, you can boot into your stock rom. All root does is give you permissions to do stuff to your phone you can't do with root. So, you can still use your stock rom with root permissions.
I have fresh rom 3.2 and I don't know of any bugs that are of any importance. Everything works as far as I'm concerned and battery life is great.
nand unlocked is what allows you to flash custom roms and backup and restore your roms. you have to do this in addition to rooting, it should all be laid out in the tutorial for you.

Ok, so I just got an Rogers Xperia Play (r800a) a couple days ago and my bootloader is locked but I want to use the stock based roms. How do I flash a rom? So far I've rooted my phone and I have uninstalled/frozen a lot of stuff so my phone is running pretty fast right now.
To summarize what I said, I have a rooted phone with a locked bootloader, can someone just tell me how to get that clockworkmod thing and what to do to flash a rom?

Thanks. I now have recovery installed. And the guide thing sad that it's possible to brick my phone so can someone give detailed instructions on the nandroid back up thing which lets you restore your phone to the way it is? My phone is in functioning good condition right now and I don't wanna freeze all the bloat again after the rom.

I bought a R800i a few weeks ago, and the bootloader says unlock allowed: yes
and was wondering where I could go to install ROMS and how I'd do it? Would I need Clockwork Mod aswell (the same one as above or a different one? )

So my sister has an Attt Galaxy note 2. I want to format her phone and install aokp or cyanogenmod on it cause they are smoother and faster roms. I searched on how to unlock and root the Galaxy note 2 but i've only found a bunch of guides showing how to root the phone, i haven't found one telling how to unlock the bootloader?
does anyone know how to unlock the GN2 bootloader, or is it already unlocked?

what do you mean you can't? Are samsung phones different somehow? I can unlock bootloader on my Nexus 4, my bro's Moto g, and my other Bro's Lg Optimus G, so why can't i unlock bootloader on Samsung Galaxy note 2?
i've never used a samsung phone before so i'm not sure if they differ somehow.
So i don't need to unlock bootloader to install aokp or cyangamod? i only need to root and install custom recovery? I think her phone is on android 4.1.2 or 4.2 i forgot which one.

Samsung does not consider your phone yours as these other manufacturers.
If she has not done the most recent Over the Air update to 4.3, it's probably on 4.1.2. The latest OTA installs Knox security. You dont want that.

You don't need to root either. If you do install, it will get overwritten since it's installed in the /system directory. ROMs replace the /system directory.

I really appreciate the help . i posted on android central and this forum but no help until you posted so thanks. I guess samsung phones are different. I was also told that you only need to back up EFS files on samsungs phones only and NOT on Nexus 4, or Moto G right?
Also, you said you can just install custom recovery but don't you need to root phone to do that? and the most roms like aokp comes rooted by default right?

But of course.
EFS holds IMEI info, carrier info, a backup is definitely a good idea. You never know when an OH SH*T will pop up.

Sorry, started replying back last night and got sidetracked.
Yes no need to root, pre-custom recovery. They are totally different. Root (superuser) is a file and app.
Custom recovery replaces the phones built-in Android recovery.Two "versions" TWRP and Clockworkmod. Both work well. Some ROM installs will suggest using a certain one.
ODIN will root the phone.

The technobufallo guide kind of made no sense since the guy used odin to root the phone, then used odin to flash custom recovery, then used it to flash cyanogenmod, which is pointless since like you say above, custom roms comes with root preloaded.
also my sister asked att to unlock her phone and now she's using tmobile with the phone. Would flashing any roms also lock the phone and prevent using tmobile sim?

I was going to install aokp or cyanogenmod since she' been complaining about her phone being slow and stock touchwiz 4.1.2 is already reptty slow in itself. BUt she said she wanted to use s-pen features and especially multi window for her work, so those aokp and cyan roms were out of the the question. I still think if she wants speed, she needs aokp or cyanogenmod though, but i guess a lot of people those the touchwiz features

No prob. That's why I pointed you to the Jedi Master X. It'll work on T Mobile, It has the speed. Check out the builder, ptmr3, stats. Fricking insane.

So far I've had only Samsung phones, which were rooted by flashing a zip file through the built-in recovery (containing signed SuperSU).
Now I have a 2013 Nexus 7 and I'm looking at the rooting guides and I see bootloader unlocking, flashing custom recoveries and a lot of other things which personally confuse the hell out of me as to why are they needed.
So I wanted to ask if there is a way to just flash a zip file with the SuperSU (and buzybox) app like how it's done on the Samsung phones? Or if there is a method that doesn't require replacing the stock recovery / flashing ROM components?
If anything its easier than any Samsung device but the thing is don't Root if it confuses you at least until you understand how to do it there is tons of guides online

That's kind'a my question, it's not that I don't know how, I just don't get if all the side-stuff in 90% of the guides is actually needed, so I asked if there is a way to just get SuperSU working without any custom-recoveries or other side-things.
To my knowledge, you need to have a custom recovery to root it. Unlocking the bootloader helps with this, as it ensures recovery and root sticks.
Or, just use the Wugfresh Nexus Root Toolkit to unlock and root.

I was in the exact same position as you four days ago, up until then the only android devices I had owned were the Samsung Galaxy S2 and S4. It is quite different to the rooting process on the samsung devices but just as you did with the Samsung devices you will learn as you go along. My bootloader is unlocked, rooted with a custom rom and it was pretty easy to do

That's kind'a my question, it's not that I don't know how, I just don't get if all the side-stuff in 90% of the guides is actually needed, so I asked if there is a way to just get SuperSU working without any custom-recoveries or other side-things.

A sideload would only be needed if you didn't dump SuperSU on the phone first.

When rooting, does the bootloader always have to be unlocked and a custom recovery always needed to be installed?

Bootloader needs to be be unlocked, but can be relocked after rooting
AFAIK, you can use stock recovery, but custom offers better options/control over the situation. Most roms/kernels are flashed via twrp or cwm..... You can flash through rom toolbox if you choose to stay stock recovery
You can use Towel root to root your tablet in about 30 seconds. It'll also unlock your bootloader for you.
Cousin recovery is only needed of you intend to flash kernels and Roms and the like. If, like me, you only want root for installing things like xposed then you don't need to bother with one.

Yes, all the steps that are listed are required for rooting your Nexus. I understand what you are asking and I was also hesitant at first, but it was super easy to root and I didnt use the WugFresh took kit I manually rooted mine, following Zedomaxs Video tutorial, that way I could stop and Pause it at every step to make sure things were happening as they should here is the link

I confirm towelroot works on the 2013 nexus 7. After rooting unlock bootloader with app from google play. This method does not wipe user data or need a computer at all. And if root is lost and the towelroot exploit is patched with the next os update you can reroot the old way.

Hi all, new to all of this. Please keep this in mind as you read this thread.
Well first of all I have been reading about Cyanogenmod and how it helps saves battery. I also wanted to use cputuner to overclock my phone a little. I have in the past rooted this phone and installed cputuner not knowing that it could damage your phone if you didn't have a custom kernel that supported overclocking. After I found that out I uninstalled it and unrooted in fear of damage to my phone. Anyways I have a few questions and was looking knowledge, resources, and help about a few things.
Questions:
Is installing a custom rom and things needed to install a custom rom possible with a PC?
Can I safely reroot my device since I unrooted through #SU?
What do I need to do besides reroot my device in order to install a custom rom? (Cyanogenmod)

Device was rooted before using towelroot but I unrooted using #SU.

Ok. To install cm with no computer use, I'd say the easiest way would be to get root again with towelroot. Then install flashify from the play store. use flashify to install a custom recovery. I prefer TWRP.
Next download cm rom and Gapps. Follow the installation instructions for the rom. Generally that's boot into recovery, wipe dalvik, cache, system, and data, flash rom, flash Gapps, then reboot. You can do this from the internal SD, it won't erase that when you wipe. However, an external SD can be really handy for getting out of a jam.
If you haven't done it, a little research on the forums here about backing up your efs might be in order before flashing roms. Hope you never need it, but it could make life easier someday.
Read, read, read the forum here. This was just a real brief overview. If you don't quite understand any part, it should at least help you with what to search to learn what you need to know.

Thanks friend will look into it a little more. So is there a major risk of getting bricked or are chances slim? Also do you have any links to the Cyanogenmod version I'm looking for? I would like it to be 4.4.2, not 5.X.X. And I also need the appropriate gapps file. If you don't know I still thank you for the info friend!

Chances of bricking should be slim as long as you follow the instructions closely.
CyanogenMod 11 is based on Android 4.4.X, Kitkat. Nightlies can be found here or here.
Snapshot releases, sometimes called monthlies, can be found here.

Thanks so much! Have been researching like crazy and odds seem pretty good. Problem is I've hit a ditch headfirst. I can't reboot using towering because I updated my kernel sometime through the period when my phone was unrooted (idk when or how this was done.) The date is apast june the 3rd and i read it won't work apast that date. Is there a workaround for this? I have no PC so I would like a non-PC method if possible. I just wanted to say I have tried all the modstrings for toweroot and still nothing.

The June 3rd date probably only counts if you took all of the OTA updates, okay rechecked your OP and I see that you are on NE4. I recall that either the NE4 or the NJ1 update patched the kernel to block TowelRoot. I take it when you say Firmware 4.4.2 KitKat you mean baseband, modem, and Samsung stock rom.
With SuperSu you can re-root using it, assuming you unrooted but did not remove the app. I don't know if the same applies to th SU app that comes with CWM. You could try. If you did go back to stock rom and properly formated you may no longer have su on your phone.

Thanks for the info, sadly I did uninstall #SU. Here is a ss of my modem info and such. I think it pretty much confirms I have the NJ1 version but I need you to confirm that.

I'm stuck.
You can install a custom recovery without having root, if you have a PC. You would use either Odin, Heimdall, or maybe adb.
You can install a custom recovery without a PC if you have root. You would use an app Like Flashify, Rom Manager, or Goo Manager (if it still exists).
You can flash a rom without a PC if you have a custom recovery, root is not needed.
Some roms, usually stock, can be flashed without a custom recovery if you have a PC.
I don't know the solution until you have access to a PC. I could see it being possible using a live USB with persistence of a Linux distribution, but you still have need for a PC. It's been a while since I created a live USB. The method I used required a small installation on the PC. so I don't see this as an immediate solution for you.
Oh sorry. I don't think towelroot works once you're on nj1, unless it has been updated.
If you get access to a PC, rooting is still fairly easy. You can use download mode and odin or heimdall to flash a custom recovery (be sure to uncheck reboot if using odin, or be really ready to pull battery). Don't let your phone reboot normally, you'll have to pull battery once odin is done.
Reboot to custom recovery, then flash supersu and you'll be rooted again, and set up to do whatever you want with your phone.

Thanks all for your help. I have decided I'm gonna give C-F Root a try as it seems very easy, then use Flashify to get CWM. Correct me if I'm wrong but there's no boot loader for my model type right? Couldn't seem to find anything on the subject except the Verizon variant. I'm gonna still need help deciding which gapps to flash as I'm gonna flash the latest Cyanogenmod monthly build. Is there anything else to be aware of when using a new Rom?

excuse for butting in .... but if you dont know your bootloader/modem info. here is an app called 'samsung info' that should tell you.
your question "...... but theres no bootloader for my phone model right?" kinda worried me. its important to know because they should match AND trying to downgrade can brick your device. on the plus side ; i've never seen a custom ROM include bootloader/modem in it.

As mrrocketdog stated, the Samsung Info app will tell you your bootloader and modem. If what you previously stated is correct, they should both be NJ1. You can get the same info by issuing these commands in a terminal emulator on the phone:

So how do I tell that my phone is equipped with a boot loader? And if it is how do I disable it? I read that in order to flash a new Rom the boot loader must be disabled. (Correct me if I'm wrong) I'm no where near the point of flashing a new Rom (Cyanogenmod) but this is a great furniture reference to me.

every phone has a bootloader , two if i'm not mistaken. the one you're concerned with comes already unlocked on the good 'ol S3. (i bricked my first s3 trying to 'unlock' the bootloader). just find out bootloader/modem version (see posts above) to make sure they match (to avoid issues later) and just dont ever try to downgrade.

You have lifted a burden off my shoulders friend! Ever since I wanted to flash a custom Rom I've been worried if my phones bootloader was locked! I can now be at ease now that I know its unlocked. Will check upon that info about bootloader/modem.

Those are the latest versions of the bootloader and modem. You will be good for CM 12 or CM 11, and other custom ROMs based on CM. Older versions will work with them, but you probably need to edit the updater-script. (The older versions are not likely to include the NJ1 versions in the checks as they were not out when the ROMs were last updated.) NJ1 will also work with any of the ROMs based on the KitKat TouchWiz releases by Samsung.
As soon as you can find a PC to borrow you should be in business. Any chance of using one at a public library?

Thats the part that scares me but I should be good as people has confirmed it works for NJ1. Wish me luck friend. Would you recommend installing CM12? I personally like kit Kat and I know CM11 is based on that but is CM12 better? I guess its based on Lollipop
