Galaxy S 4 Stutter fix? - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S 4

The phone stutters often and it is frustrating! I just switched from the Galaxy Note II to the Galaxy S 4 and simple task like switching between home screens and application screens stutter. Third party applications run perfectly smooth. Face unlock has massive stuttering and I used it on my past devices just fine. The only thing I can think of is that it is powering a 1080P display.
I've been looking around online and all I seen were complaints or people saying they do not experience it. People who have what are some fixes?

Have you tried checking your background apps? Maybe the processor is busy running something else very resource intensive?

Try different home launchers, disable s-voice home button, flash a custom rom. I dont use face unlock. Look some more, and post questions in the questions section.

Guess it depends on whether you use any of that stuff. I don't use of it. I got the phone for the hardware and the screen.
Cm10.1 = absolutely lag free. Bar none. What bugs are you referring to? I'm solid over here.

The simple fact that you downgrade from the tw camera to the aosp camera is enough for me. Plus the fact that when you record video the volume is way lower. There was also a call bug that sometimes you or the other person couldn't hear each other ( I'm not sure but I think it was fixed). Cm was great for me when I had the Motorola Triumph since the triumph sucked, but cm has always had issues on all my phones that I've owned. Honestly people say it's so much smoother but I don't see a difference from tw and cm.

No bugs on my end. Could care less about the camera, and yes, the smoothness is apparent as soon as you flash cm. Anyone can tell you that. The only reason to go with TW is the features.
It just depends on personal preference.

I flashed the 4.3 Google Edition ROM and it is butter smooth along with the face unlock. So maybe it is not the 1080p display. I also noticed ram usage dropped by a good 50%. The TW ROM uses around 900mb-1.1Gb probably due to the bloatware that was on it. A Google Edition phone for only $580 I am happy.

It's apparently Touch Wiz that makes the phone laggy.I'm expecting Samsung to make this less of an issue with updates since it is a new phone but I didn't want to wait.
I flashed the Infamous rom since I am not willing to give up the Samsung camera features. Then I use Nova launcher within it and it runs much faster.

Horrible touchwiz is what causes the lag, flashed GE ROM. BUTTER SMOOTH, I don't use the Samsung gimmicky features and the only camera mode I use is HDR that's included in the GE ROM
Super smooth, super stable, great battery life, more ram, win!!!

I installed the ktoonz kernel on my otherwise stock 4 and it is absolutely 100% smoother.

Stock S4 here with Nova Launcher, NO LAG, here my crappy video, LOL.

Beside the lag has the heat given any of you some trouble? I noticed the phone heats up quicker than any of my previous phones but it doesn't seem to cause any harm to performance.

I've had 2 M919 Galaxy S4's so far.
First one I returned because it was so incredibly laggy, everyone said theirs was butter smooth (all of whom were in denial), I thought I had a defective device. I tried all the custom roms using the Tmobile base and also international 9505 roms. Still did not fix the microstutters. Second one was laggy as hell also out of the box so I knew it was just the device. The latest international 9505 roms seem to make the phone smoother, but there are microstutters still present which should NOT BE THE CASE with a phone that's this powerful, but the biggest offender for me still is web browsing.
Open up the stock browser or chrome and go to theverge.com website, call up the full site and browse around. Pinch and zoom, then pan around. Tell me how incredibly slow it is to use. It seems like I'm using my original Motorola Droid all over again.
I'm sure by the time the Galaxy S5 comes around, Samsung "might" finally come out with a smooth working firmware for the S4, in the meantime I say ditch this device and get the HTC One. That baby is liquid smooth in EVERY operation and rips the S4 a new butt hole when it comes to web browsing smoothness and speed. Hell it even still supports full Adobe Flash even with 4.2.2.
The One is also pushing a 1080P screen so it's not the pixel count that is slowing the S4 down. It's something else. I had initially blamed the S4 lagging because of 4.2.2, reason is on my Note 2 running 4.1.2 it had next to zero lag and it's also running a heavy TW skin. I thought the HTC One was so smooth because it was still on 4.1.2. Well after updating to 4.2.2 on the HTC One, it even GOT SMOOTHER and FASTER.
I have also ran the google edition ROM's on both my S4 and my HTC One, and guess what?? The HTC ONE ran the pure GE ROM smoother than the S4 still!
The GE ROM still has slight microstutter on the S4 which is mind boggling. I noticed it a few times when opening the dialer and gmail app, the animation has a bit of microstuter in the animation when opening up. Something is definitely up with the S4 hardware wise.

Disable "Scrollingcache" for buttery smoothness?

Could anyone throw in a modified framework.jar for stock ROM or CM9 with scrollingcache disabled? For the Sprint galaxy nexus
Most people think the Galaxy Nexus is pretty smooth, but for us OCD type and especially us former iPhone owners know it's not 60fps smooth.. It's very stuttery due to the scrolling cache... Disabling it makes it MUCH smoother.. Like iPhone 4S smooth.
I'm not sure if this was ever done on other models of the GN but there's nothing like that available for the Sprint version yet. AOKP has that option, but so far there isn't a port, either.
Thanks!

Understandable. I've been trying to get my nexus as smooth as my 3gs. If u want to disablr scrolling cache, u could put in your build.prop
persist.sys.scrollingcache=3
Some custom ROMs, like the latest AOKP, allow you to disable the scrolling cache. Otherwise, it's not built into the default system.
I'm a bit confused. Isn't scrollingcache supposed to help with smoothness? Why does disabling it make the system smoother?

Hi,
Found this:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1411317&highlight=scrolling+cache
- Some android applications have some lag when they scroll.
I found in logcat that garbage collector is working to much when I do some scroll in application.
I googled about it and found the 'scrollingcache' function inside android making problem.
Some application developers recommend disable 'scrollingcache' in app's internal config.
But not all applications have disabled scrollingcache.
So the mod I'll do will disable the scrollingcache throughout the Android OS.
All apps will have no problem with scrollingcache.
I've had scrolling improvements with facebook, playerpro, poweramp, gallery apps , etc.

I just wanted to confirm the OP. A good confirmation came from improved scrolling in Adobe Reader, which was horrid across multiple ROMs I've tried. It was a great deal faster with the newest Sprint OTA and GLaDOS 2.1 kernel.

The advantange of disabling the scrolling cache is more smoothness.
But what is the advantange, when it is on?
Wgich advantage has the scrolling cache?
hate to echo some users above, but wouldn't scrollling cache set to true/on be better for smoothness?
http://developer.android.com/reference/android/widget/AbsListView.html#attr_android:scrollingCache
For those curious about the scrolling cache here's a video called "the world of ListView" :
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=skD1fjxSRog (jump to 37:14) .
Even though it's quite an old video, there are still many questions on StackOverflow related to ListView which would get solved by just watching this video.
OP, Learn a little bit about how to use Android and Linux. And then ask your questions.
I use stock CM11 with Smitty's Kernel. OC'd CPU 1.5Ghz and GPU at 512Mhz. ZRAM enabled. And a custom 3800mAh battery for battery.
Gotta say without any additional Linux tweaks my device is flying!

Is MIUI any good on the Galaxy Nexus?

I loved MIUI on the HTC Desire, it was fast, stable and just worked.
However i have never heard many good things about it on the Galaxy Nexus, a lot of people say its slow and laggy. from watching most YouTube videos it does appear to be. What are people experiences with it?
The reason i ask is the ViciousMIUI V4.1 Jelly Bean Edition is supposed to be pretty fast and stable. Atleast in this video, however some comments say ". But compared to the stock Jelly Bean ROM (Vicious, Bugless, etc.) it is a lot slower and less fluid than JB. I was took forever to load and seemed kind of buggy to me."
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CqraqIUenOU
Just wondering if people think its worth going from stock jellybean to MIUI, i do like that everything on my phone just works at the moment, however i do miss MIUI.
Nandroid and try it then let us know.
I actually have tried MIUI on the Gnex. ICS as well as Jellybean. It is working ok, but as you say it's pretty laggy.
So if u love miui I would just try if I were you and then draw you're own conclusions. I have never tried it for a long time, so it's perfectly possible that when the rom settles it will solve the lagging issues.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
I have only heard negative things from the ones who has tried MIUI. Buggy and laggy sums it up pretty much.
Heard good things used it for awhile and no problems with it. Minimal lag to me and I didn't have any bugs that bothered me.

Tried it and hated it
mainly because I don't like the UI, but it was pretty smooth and stable if that's what you're looking for.
Not recomended on the GNex...!!!
I loved MIUI on my Galaxy S i9000, in fact it was my favorite ROM on the SGS. but would not recommend it on the GNex...too laggy and you have more feature rich ROMs out there.
mmm
mmm
heard it's pretty and neat,
but kinda laggy atm in JB
OP: Why don't you just try it yourself: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=31621751
I did end up giving it ago myself, the build on miui.com was pretty laggy and was not totally in English.
The ViciousMIUI V4.1 build was a lot more responsive and had been totally translated from what i could see, it did'nt appear to be as fast as the stock jelly bean is on the nexus, however it did look really nice!
The double unlock screen is annoying though, its a shame you cant just disable the lock screen on MIUI if you have a swipe to unlock pattern set.
At this moment in time i'm just going to stick with the stock Jellybean rom, MIUI just doesn't perform like it did back in the 2.3 days sadly. Although it looks even more awesome and I do miss it after using it now!

Yep I agree... I was a serious MIUI fan back in my Nexus S days but MIUI on Galaxy Nexus makes me feel really bad about it. I downloaded it every week, flashed, then went back to CM. Until the last few versions (especially 2.9.14) that I feel it's getting good enough to be my daily driver :fingers-crossed:
Its nice. The newer releases are better and better. The only complaint I have is when an app is requesting root permission I have to click the dialog box like 6 times. No joke. That alone was a deal breaker for me

That annoyed me too actually, however i could live with it as im not running apps that need root all the time. I would really like to just have the lock pattern to unlock my phone and not some fancy lock screen too, that's probably my only other deal breaker.

Initial lag on first swipe of home screen???...Still Stock.

So Ive had my t-mobile S3 for a few days now. Ive loved it so far, Ive only had it for a few days, so i have not rooted it yet or even looked at the dev section for custom roms. All my previous phones have been rooted and had custom roms, but have not had the chance or desire to do it/read up on it on my S3 yet...
Anyway, to my question. After I initially unlock the phone and am at the first home screen, when I go to swipe it either way to change screens, I have lag. After that initial swipe and lag I can swipe smoothly. Its just that first swipe that gives me lag. This is the most powerful device I've had, so I am surprised to see the lag. Im assuming its touchwiz and the phone probably takes a moment to ramp up the cpu? Im not against rooting and rom'ing it, just have not yet and wondering if others had this or noticed this issue while still completely stock? If so, are there any transitions or anything I can change, or do i just deal with it until I root it and throw on an awesome rom?
Thanks
It's just coming out of deep sleep and at q low CPU clock to save power. It's normal.

Yeah you should relax while we all can admit TouchWiz Sucks its not that bad, Even having power saving on should not affect a little task like that. This phone is really fast stock so don't feel you need to root just because of that. Now if bloatware really bothers you, carrier IQ then you can go on and flash away.

thanks everyone. Ive had android since the beginning (well almost, mt3g). So I'm used to the lag that android sometimes has. but to be honest, i was really surprised to see it on this phone. I thought it was powerful enough hardware wise and the software tweaks (project butter act) that I was just surprised to see the lag (i know touchwiz slows it down). I've noticed a little more here and there...
Any way, glad to know its normal for this phone being stock, I just did not expect it. Guess Ill have to root it and play around with some custom roms to get that smoothness Im looking for
Yea I notice the lag on start up to but after a couple of seconds its good.
You know it's weird, I used to have the same issue, so I know exactly what you're talking about. But I don't have it anymore for some reason and I'm not quite sure when it went away. I flashed a stock rooted Jelly Bean rom to get root, but that's the only thing I've done to it.
Once you get past the little bit of lag...she is butter smooth....

Anybody feels the S4 was rushed? Especially software wise?

So I've had my S4 since the 30th, pre-ordered it on the 29th at 3:00AM.
After using it now for about 5 days, I am pretty disappointed in the software. Basically none of the "COOL" features it has works very well, especially the head scrolling. Terrible...
The smoothness on the phone is so utterly inconsistent it bothers me till no end. 60 percent of the time, operations are silky smooth, 40 percent there is a motherload of lag. Simply closing an app will cause the animation to "stutter" as it closes. Sometimes swiping between screens will cause the phone to stutter, opening the camera sometimes is instant, sometimes it take a couple seconds! WTF that drives me insane on a phone that pulls in 12,000+ quadrant scores and wipes the floor with pretty much everything in antutu.
I blame Samsung, their TW is definitely not ready for prime time when skinned on top of 4.2.2. Seemed like a rush job to get the phone shipped with 4.2.2 so they can get the upper hand on the HTC One.
TW works absolutely flawless on 4.1 for example on the Note 2 and GS3, there was hardly a hint of lag on those phones. So what do you guys think? TW not ready for 4.2.2 or is it because it's not optimized for the new Snapdragon processor?
i had a s3 and a s2 and a s1 and all these problems people complained about was stil there. I dont remember tw being that fluid on my s3 i remember i couldnt wait to root it to add cm on it. A article i read said it best "Android phones have a reputation for customizability. And to a certain extent, they almost require tinkering to optimize the experience. Theres always gonna be something we dont like about our phones thats why we love to tinker and change it!
wasnt really rushed, just touch wiz isnt meant for performance as much as gimmicky features, which all work just fine for me.
Though the debloated wicked rom is enough to keep me happy for now. as soon as paranoid android or P.A.C drops for our phone im on them in a heart beat. I just need per app dpi to be happy, with any phone
Wicked rom speeds the lag up a bit and im sure things will only get better..
21k antutu score stock, 25k after wicked... Im sure an Oc kernel will help too

I actually think the software is rather well polished. The theme is still not my cup of tea, but whatever. Really the only few issues I have is with camera focus every once in a while and the little bit of stuttery animation which seems more like a governor/kernel issue than anything.
Phone is pretty awesome overall.

I think it's pretty well done, the fact is the motion and smart camera tricks are always a little bit of a crap shoot, and they're so situational I can't really justify leaving them on to myself. So I just turn them all off, other than that I don't mind TouchWiz, it's very bright and cartoony, but I don't think that's a bad thing necessarily.
i do not think so
they will test it almost for long times, and someother funcition will be release to us in next OTA maybe, just as the apple doing.

For those who moved from TW to AOSP: thoughts?

Got my S4 a couple days ago and flashed AOKP within an hour. I thought the TW bundled with the phone was pretty damn smooth, but AOKP is just insane. It's like something out of a commercial where there's zero lag, but it's not a commercial, it's the actual phone in your hands. When I hit voice search, it pops up INSTANTLY. I've had a couple soft reboots when hitting recent apps from a frozen app, but I'm sure those will be ironed out. I'm not sure the camera pictures I've taken have looked as nice, though. It's hard to tell.
For those of you who made the move from TW to an AOSP-based ROM, what are your thoughts? Has anyone moved back to TW?
I've never used anything but aosp on any phone. Be it cyanogen or aokp or pure aosp.
With my previous HTC devices it was a no brainer to dump Sense ROMs and replace them with anything else. Even my Samsung tablet that came with TW didn't last long but that was because I wanted Jelly Bean on it before the official upgrade came out so TW was gone within 2 days on my tablet. So I've been using aosp for a year and a half without interruption.
When I first turned on my S4 I was shocked at how cluttered everything was. Having been used to aosp I didn't understand how anyone could use this phone as it comes out of the box. There was a new alert every 8 seconds. The notification window was constantly filled with stuff I couldn't have cared less about. Status bar was filled with icons that had no meaning to me. The only feature I thought was really cool was the T Mobile account monitor in the notification window. Everything else was just clutter. Granted, much of that was carrier bloat.
It took me 20 minutes to test all the hardware and make sure the device was not in. Need of an exchange before I rooted it and ever that was kind of painful with the TW interface. I flashed Cyanogen and am not looking back.
Oh, and despite all that about TouchWiz that I didn't like...its about a billion times better than HTC Sense.
I will say that on my unbranded Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 tablet that is WiFi only and there for completely unbranded with no bloat, the pure TouchWiz interface it came with was very nice. It was much less cluttered and more usable. Just not as configurable as aosp.

I guess its universal AOSP are always smoother to bloated TouchWiz. I personally prefer TW (yes call me crazy ) Either you love TW or you hate it there's no other option TW with all its goodies is lot cooler than what it used to be..

I've also noticed AOSP feels much faster... virtually no lag to be found. One thing that I have noticed though, and it may be something I'm not doing right with my settings, but TW seems to get better battery life than AOSP. I like TW for certain features such as the camera quality and one or two of the gimmicky features; but halo, unbridled speed, and customization possibilities with AOSP makes it a hard decision of which to stay with.
Overall i find most of the touchwiz features just unnecessary bloatware that you really dont need, thats more for showing off that your phone can do it over actually being practical to keep on all the time. I really like the general smoothness of AOKP much better than touchwiz, but in some areas such as the camera, AOKP really lacks in that department compared to the stock camera app, and i find 3D applications don't perform quite as well as they do on Touchwiz either, and i think most of these issues are probably more driver related than anything.
I used aokp on my s2 and loved it because it doesnt have any samsung goodness like s3 and s4 but on this devices I use TW to utilize full function.

For those of you who uses AOSP/AOKP/w.e else ....what do you use as alternative camera/gallery? What i love about Samsung is their gallery and camera. I have found mods that transfer AOSP camera / gallery to TW but never vice versa.
I tried Aosp roms on my s3 and s4. I always end up back on tw cuz aosp roms are never 100% stable. The last time I actually stayed on aosp was with my Motorola Triumph and that's because the triumph was stuck on froyo and Cm7 was pretty stable.

Okay, the big question:
Is it possible to use Watch ON (or smart remote, etc) on AOSP/AOKP/Cyanogen/etc? or is this limited to touchwiz only?
As for camera quality, I expect that to start changing for the better once the Nexusized GS4 gets released

I'm pretty curious about this myself. From what I've heard AOKP/AOSP doesn't have the software to utilize the IR blaster, but I could always be wrong. I use TW , but will almost always run Nova launcher for customization.

that's what I thought. thanks.
Oh well, just another reason why I said once before on how I'm happy with my phone's OS as/is.

According to Cyanogen, the source code for that isn't proprietary. He wants to see what other devs come up with.

The source code for the software might not be, but I think it is for the IR hardware. I know on the Samsung tablets that have an IR blaster they don't work in CM because the hardware drivers are proprietary.

Ive been running CM10.1 and just switched to SlimBean. I never once missed the new features of TW. The abilities of AOSP far outweigh them in my opinion.
Tw all the way..
I have no issues or lag... I was a big fan of liquid smooth for a bit but I went back to stock

No to the extra sd space.
Possibly yes to the battery life. It greatly depends on how you set it up and what features you do and don't activate. Also the cm builds are nightly builds, which means any given one of them could have randomly crappy battery life due to a glitch or something. These have been great builds lately but that can always happen with nightlies. That aside though...yes you should get better battery life

thanks, i will get a custom rom soon and try it out. this whole thing is just boggling my mind haha. at one point it was draining at around a percent a minute and i just came back from the gym, was listening to music the whole time on my headphones and using voice to control it and in those 45 mins i didnt lose a single percent of battery smh
