[Q] Can't get Recovery/Root. Need help please. - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I NOW HAVE ROOT AND RECOVERY!
Thanks to mariostar32 and krankdroid!
Hi all,
I've just bought a Note II and am trying to get root. I've followed this tutorial carefully
HTML:
http://galaxynote2root.com/galaxy-note-2-root/how-to-root-galaxy-note-2-on-linuxubuntu/
and everything completes without error, but whenever I try and boot into recovery it just get a garbled Samsung boot logo and it never gets to recovery.
Now I can't go back to stock updates since my device has been modified, so I'm commited to getting root and custom recovery now.
Can anyone help me with what is going wrong?
Thanks

download the last version 4.1.2 and flash it via odin. If you need any help tell me.

I can no longer download updates from Samsung since I have tried to root it already.
I can't use Odin since I don't have Windows.
I have tried the method in the link above using Heimdall (Odin equiv. for Linux) and everything went fine (no errors, terminal output was as expected) but cannot get into any recovery (stock or custom)

Before you proceed with tutorial, make sure:
You have installed your Galaxy Note 2 N7100 USB drivers on your PC.
You need to enable USB debugging mode which is deactivated by default.
You smartphone should have 70-80% charge remaining.
Your Galaxy Note 2 N7100 should be factory unlocked.
Backup your important data like Call logs, SMS and other data in stored in phone memory so in case if anything goes wrong, your data is not hurt.
The update is only meant for Galaxy Note 2 N7100, so don’t try it on other variants.
Step 1) Download Android 4.1.2 XXDLK7 for Galaxy Note 2 N7100. " I can't post outside links so type in google galaxy note 2 xxdlk7 "
Step 2) Download ODIN v3.07. It's an old version but you can download a newer version of odin from google but it works np
Step 3) Turn OFF your mobile and go to Download Mode by pressing and holding the Volume Down + Home Buttons together for few seconds followed by Power button until you see Android logo with triangle on screen.
Step 4) Now open ODIN on your PC and connect your Galaxy Note 2 N7100 to your computer.
Step 5) Once your phone is successfully connected to your PC, the ID:COM box on ODIN will turn yellow and will show the COM port number.
Step 6) Select the downloaded file to install by following below steps:
Click on PDA and select file with HOME or CODE in its name.
Now click on Phone and select file with MODEM in its name.
Next click on CSC and select file with CSC in its name.
At last click on PIT and select file with .pit.
Step 7) Again to to ODIN window and check Auto Reboot and F. Reset Time options.
Step 8) Click on Start button in ODIN window to start the installation process. The process will take few minutes to complete.
Step 9) When the installation is completed, your phone will restart. I hope that i helped you GoodLuck

I can't use Odin, there is no Linux version.
I've found the TWRP for the Note II:
HTML:
http://teamw.in/project/twrp2/115
Does anyone know if I flash the latest .img file from that using Heimdall will that give me a recovery to then install Super-SU from?
I've only just bought this phone and can't afford to buy another if I brick it, so I'm hesitant to just try without some expert knowledge.

you must be rooted first before putting twrp.

Ok, so how can I root it?
The only Linux tutorial I've found doesn't work since I can't get a working recovery in order to install Super-SU and get root.
Is there another way to get root? Or another method that might give me a recovery so I can get root?

Ok after you did the tutorial you got rooted or not ? download root check from play store and check

No I do not have root. I wish to get root access and install a recovery, then Super-SU.

Try this, It's a root way without odin.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2130276

You can get the mobile Odin that let's you flash firmware from the device itself.

Great! I'll get that to install TWRP or CWM then, since Heimdall seems to be corrupting the recovery when flashing it.
I've got root now (thanks to mario above!) so mobile odin is a good option
Thanks!

It's nice to see that you get rooted, nw download mobile odin and flash twrp.img

[Guide] Installing LH1 OTA for Canadian S3

Been seeing a lot of post about how to install OTA with a rooted stock ROM. This is by far the easiest way for people to update and not lose any data. All are done using Odin 3.07 on Windows 7 and not going to link it or how to use it lots of tutorials out that show you.
To put in Download Mode -> Vol Down + Home + Power
To Boot into Recovery -> Vol Up + Home + Power
Things needed:
ROM
CWM-Recovery
Root zip file
ROMS
NOTE: These are the FULL firmware of LH1 and NOT small OTA. This is good to have as a backup should something go wrong.
Bell
Telus
Rogers
Sasktel
CWM-Recovery
See Attached, this is an Official CWM from CWM team. If you don't want to use this use whatever recovery you want or had before.
Root: MOVE THIS TO PHONE STORAGE
Chainfire SuperSU
1.) Boot into recovery and create backup, always better to backup
2.) Unzip firmware file and you will see 2 files a dll and md5. The one we need is the md5
Im with bell so mines is -> KIES_HOME_I747MVLALH1_I747MOYCALH1_20120814.100513_REV04_user_low_ship.tar.md5
3.) Put phone into download mode
4.) Load Odin select PDA and select the firmware file you unzipped in step 2. The MD5 file.
5.) Let the phone do its thing and do not touch it until you are at the lockscreen.
7.) Boot into download mode again and select PDA and this time select the recovery tar file
8.) Uncheck F. Reset and flash
9.) Once back on the lockscreen go into Recovery and install the CWM-SuperSU-v0.96.zip to root from phone storage.
10.) Get Triangle Away from here and reset counter.
Excellent guide with links thanks

Instructions are in his OP. I have pasted below:
7.) In Odin: Boot into download mode again and select PDA and this time select the recovery tar file (he has attached odin flashable cwm tar in the op)
8.) Uncheck F. Reset and flash
After that you will have CWM. Go to step 9 if you want to root and install SuperSU.
I already updated via Kies and of course now lost my root. If I follow this method (now, after the update) will I get root back or is there another method you guys would recommend? Thanks

You have essentially completed steps 1-5 above using Kies. Go to step 7 (6 is missing) and follow instructions to flash the CWM tar file attached in OP via ODIN and the supersu zip via CWM and you are done.
I was about to follow the video guide found in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1728824 which shows you how to root and install CWM without tripping the flash counter. Can I follow his installation instructions, but instead use the rooted stock Telus rom linked to in this thread? I assume that if i follow the guide in his thread and use the files he links to, I will end up re-flashing the stock 4.0.1 rom instead of the new 4.0.4, which I want to keep.
Plus I want to have CWM and not trip my flash counter so I dont need to bother with Triangle Away.
This is my first time rooting or flashing anything to my phone, so my apologies for my extreme n00bness. Thanks

If you use the rooted ROM in the other thread you will have that version and not the August LH1 update, remember the ones i linked are full stock firmware. Maybe someone will create a stock rooted flashable odin tar, but you really dont need it. Just flash using the above steps and use Triangle Away. Triangle Away although dangerous does no harm at all, its a simple apk file that installs like any other app, once you confirm it is displaying the correct model (our is I747M) then just hit the reset counter and let it do its thing and then you can uninstall it simple as that.
No point in waiting for someone to create a no trip counter file because that is much hard to do. Plus the only reason I think the first ones where like that was because Triangle Away did not fully support the I747M.

The thread for the no trip method referred to in that video is here. The OP in that thread is still working on root injected versions for the new Canadian firmwares, the ones currently in the OP are the old versions. He can create them quickly, I think he is just waiting for volunteers to mirror the files. Keep checking and when you see a Telus version up ending in LH1, you are good to go.
Thanks OP, that works just fine to reroot my phone and reset the trip counter!
I have a rogers Galaxy SIII if that could help anyone!

A little easier guide to get root?
Hi, I made this easier a little bit. Follow the posted guide from the op
Download your FW and Odin 3.07 (and ofc sammy drivers and what not)
1.) Boot into recovery and create backup, always better to backup
2.) Unzip firmware file and you will see 2 files a dll and md5. The one we need is the md5
Im with bell so mines is -> KIES_HOME_I747MVLALH1_I747MOYCALH1_20120814.100513 _REV04_user_low_ship.tar.md5
Click to collapse
Then
8.) click start, wait for you to go back to lockscreen.
9.) Flash the zip attached below (through your CWM) (vol up+ power button+ home button to get to recovery)
[BOOM you have root!]
10.) get triangle away, reset flash counter.
I did not make the zip i just got it from searching around.

[Q] Problems with Odin - Stuck at "setup connection..."

Hi guys. I've got a problem..... I tried flashing CWM 6.0.3.4 to my Wonder, I open Odin, I choose files (Ancora.ops and CWM), Odin recognises my phone, but when I press "Start", the program gets stuck at "<1> setup connection..."
I tried changing USB cable, port, even Odin (I tried 4.43 - 4.38 and 3.98), but nothing has changed..... I am running Windows XP, and I have installed only Samsung USB Drivers, without Kies. But, as said before, Odin recognises my Wonder..... even tried on another XP computer, and have the same result...... please help me

All of my posted recoveries work fine. You didn't follow the directions close enough. Make sure you flash the universal root.zip once you get the recovery working. If not, it will re-install the stock recovery automatically.
Please explain how you are trying to add TWRP or CWM to your device. Do not leave out any details. This what we can see if you are missing a step. It should be a very simple process if the steps are followed correctly (as mentioned above). So please explain how you are doing it and what tools you are using.

I think step 7 is where you might be going wrong. Again, I THINK, I could be mistaken. But I would say start the tablet in normal mode before attempting to go into recovery. After the tablet starts, go ahead and shut it down. Then try and go into recovery mode.
Also, did you start Odin as an administrator? It sounds like you are OK in that regard as you got it going and loading. But if you are still having problems then try executing Odin as administrator.
Which .tar file are you loading? Is it one of the recovery files such as TWRP or CWM?
The only other thing might be the version of recovery you are trying to load. Make sure it works with your tab and firmware. I am sure you have already checked that, but just in case you forgot.

[Q] Samsung Note 2 wont go into recovery mode.

Hi,
I have a Samsung Galaxy Note 2 on the Rogers network in Canada. I rooted my phone and then realized that supersu was not working. I dont loaded rom manager to install the latest version of CWM but realized that my version of software wasnt on the list. I selected a version that was close to mine but the install could not be completed. Anyways when I finally realized what I was doing and I needed to get my phone into recovery mode to install the lastest version on Supersu which I downloaded I could not do so. For some reason I kept getting a flashing Samsung Galaxy Note 2. See link. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4_hFpRBWqZ8
How do I fix this issue and get my phone into recovery mode? I need to install the lastest version of Supersu via CWM to have my root working correctly.
I was also wondering if I can just try to root my phone again via odin?
I am a newbie, just looking for answers.
You must know if you own a N7100 or t0lte and if the bootloader is locked or not. Here in Europe Note 2 is generally sold with unlocked bootloaders, but not so in the USA/Canada.
After that we should mind following: if the OS is corrupted now by uncompleted flashing process, you may better flash either a full stock firmware with Odin- or flash only a custom recovery with Odin. However, now you must really know is it a N7100 or t0lte

Hello Sir,
I have GT-N7100 ( Samsung Galaxy Note 2 ) 4.4.2 KitKat ! I recently tried to root my device with Odin odin3 v1.85 ( cwm6-root-note2 ) and got the pass.
Then I was not able to use SU ( Which was already pre-installed by me before rooting from play store ) Also it give the message "There is no SU binary installed and SuperSU cannot install it".
Also I cannot go to CWM Recovery mode by Pressing Vol Up + Home Button + Power Button as screen go mad and switch it off, Then I need to start it again to use my phone normally.
I have installed an app from Play Store named Root Checker which verify if phone is rooted or not and it say "Root Access is not properly configured or was not granted".
Thanks to god my phone is still working but I still wish to Root My phone again with correct process !
Q. Can I still Re-Root My phone ? If Yes, Then please guide me through latest correct process with files.
Q. I wish to root and install CWM Recovery again ( Which I tried before which has not properly configured )
Thanks
Have a nice day

See..first check if ur device has a locked bootloader. .....if it is locked u have to get that bootloader (u have to flash the rom officially for rogers).....
If u have an unlocked device...then do this
Search for the latest cf auto root for ur device
Get odin and stock rom (urs or rogers one (if locked))
Flash the rom
Flash cf auto root
And u hve a rooted stock device....that will go in recovery too

If it does not work then either give the device to Samsung. .....or try usb jig (google it)

I downloaded twrp for the play store and I cant use it as it says it requires root access. I thought my phone was rooted as I used CF- Auto root and all worked out well. I kept getting an error saying unfortunately SuperSu has stopped. I dont know what to do now. I was going to use twrp to flash SuperSu update.
How should I proceed?

TWRP from the Play Store??
Android-Andi has compiled TWRP and PhilZ for all Tab 2 models. You should flash any recent recovery as a tar file in download mode with Odin
