How to tell if my refurb is the t999L? - T-Mobile, Samsung Galaxy SIII

I made a warranty exchange, asking to try and get the new LTE variant and the guy said he'd try to send me one via warranty exchange. Opened the box and this is what came in it. Looking on the back, without the battery says regular t999, is this accurate way of telling? Or do I have to power it on?
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda premium

Mine shows SGH-T999L under the battery, so you did NOT get an LTE version. I don't think that you would, they haven't be out long enough to have refurbs yet.

Yes what it says under the battery is what you got. They're not gonna replace your T999 with a T999L unless they are totally out.
And even if they were willing to do so, it'd probably only be done for people who are already in markets with LTE. Did you ever verify for sure your area has LTE?
Is that a refurbished or a new one though? Didn't someone say that the refurbs don't come with a battery?

Looking at it more, you got the documentation, cables, SIM card.....If that's a nib device I'd say you still got really lucky!

That's the refurb I got. Back case, cables, battery, headphones, etc. Noticed the power button stuck a little, couldn't tell anything else was wing with it.
And yes, I am in an LTE area. Got another device on the way. Just gonna keep trying till I get it. Check my other thread for the details, this whole process has been going quite well surprisingly

I remember the other thread, but it'd help others if you post a link. (Probably should've.just continued posting there instead of a opening new thread)
I think.that's where someone said the refurbished devices don't come with a battery and other parts. I was just curious.

Question, how you guys do warranty exchange? From below after 14 days (CA 30 days).
they will charge handling for the phone under manufacturer warranty
If you recently purchased a new T-Mobile phone
You have 14 calendar days for discounted purchases with an annual plan at retail stores (30 in CA), 20 calendar days for online purchases via t-mobile.com, and 30 calendar days for full price purchases from the date of purchase, to return purchased equipment to the point of purchase.
Equipment must be in good working condition with original contents and packaging to be eligible for a refund of the purchase price. This return policy applies to the purchase of new equipment from T-Mobile or its authorized dealers. Proof of purchase is required.
We may charge a restocking fee. A different return period may apply to accessory purchases. Prepaid cards, software, or games are not refundable.
If your phone is defective and still under the manufacturer warranty
If your phone is defective and still under manufacturer warranty, you can return it directly to the manufacturer. T-Mobile can assist you by providing you with a replacement phone and submitting your phone to the manufacturer for you. This is a service that T-Mobile provides as a supplement to the manufacturer warranty that may come with your phone.
T-Mobile charges a processing fee for this service. If you would like T-Mobile to provide you with a replacement phone and to send your defective phone to the manufacturer for you, contact Customer Care to order a replacement. Please note that when you call, Customer Care will first attempt to troubleshoot your phone issues. For this reason, please make your initial call to Customer Care from a different phone or you may limit the ability to troubleshoot.

Returning my nexus to P4U

but only because ive ordered another one from three with all you can eat data.
Cracking phone. Came from GS2 as well and I prefer the GN.
Its a bit of a mixed bag. The camera / GPU isnt as good but the overall feel and speed of the thing more than makes up for it.
Note on the battery that it initially sucked. But after bedding in for a couple of days it was soooo much better. On par if not better than stock GS2.
I signed up for the panther 31 play from orange initially and didnt realise just how much data I would use. I found myself using the phone ALOT more than my gs2 just to browse the net (previously on t-mobile with 3gb data).
Never had the volume bug either but then i tend to leave mine on silent and just use vibrate.
Thanks for this. Really needed to hear something positive as I've been trying to decide if to cancel my order or not. It's good to see people still enjoying the phone.
Gonna keep my order intact, keep my fingers crossed and pray for the best. Hope it all works out.

actually Phones4u are required by law to give you a refund if your handset is defective, as per the Sale of Goods Act 1979
regardless of what policy they have in store, your statutory rights preclude any store policy.
edit: To make it clear - Phones4u are breaking UK trading law by refusing to give customers a refund if their item is defective

if the original poster bought the phone online, under the Distance Selling Regulations he is entitled to change his mind within 7 days from the day after he received it. He may be subject to a re-stocking charge, and would have to pay for the postage to send the item back, but he is entitled to get a refund if it was bought online or over the phone.

You get a 14 day cooling off period usually on contracts. Unless you bought it on Three, they say that as soon as the phone is turned on then you cant cancel etc

I am unsure of the rights here...I'm pretty sure that it would not apply if you got the handset via an upgrade on your existing contract.
This is why I ditched contract phones years ago - they really do not benefit the customer at all.
right
i think you right on the online or over the phone but if you buy in store thats what they state i have a friend who works for them. The reason they took mine back and cancled the contract was because the lack of falsh the ad states it but i dont work so they g=had to take it back because i was mis sold

They are also required by law to accept refunds if the phone was sold on the internet, over the phone, etc. as long as the refund is requested within 7 days (i believe)
taken from there website
Pay Monthly Phones, Broadband Dongles and SIM Only Contracts
Phones4u does not operate a 14 day return period on Pay Monthly Contracts. Contract handsets, however, may be returned within 14 days of the date of sale if the network coverage is considered to be poor at the customers contractual address and no alternative network agreement can be established. Cancellation is subject to network provider approval.

If you bought a SIM-free handset or a PAYG handset, you are entitled to a full refund under the Sale of Goods Act. If you had the handset in conjunction with a contract, then that's where your statutory rights start to disintegrate. You may be entitled to a replacement handset, or a different handset of the equivalent value. But a faulty handset would not get you out of the contract.

already mentioned that here mate
but the why to get out of the contract with a faulty handset is to say about it not having flash thats how i got out of mine!! good luck
This is all true. O2 are the only company that will offer a refund within the first 14 days (that I've found) even if you just change your mind and have been using the phone. You only pay for the minutes, texts and data you've used in that period.
Pretty awesome if you ask me! I'm keeping my eye on this volume issue as it's happening quite often here, may have to replace the screen on the old HD2 and go back to the ole faithful.
i'll be citing the sale of goods act to them tomorrow if they don't immediately accept there is a fault and offer me a refund.

just make sure you understand your statutory rights (i would link you to the Which Magazine article that lays it out better, but their site doesn't seem to be working properly right now) and make it clear to them that their advertisement on their website stated that the phone had Flash on it, and it doesn't - as a consequence, you were mis-sold the item under the advertised impression that the phone was Flash capable.

Watch for Expanxys USA return policy

I bought a galaxy nexus for expansys usa, the phone is working well and is in perfect condition but 4 days after i got it i saw that it has a crack in the inside of the screen, top left corner
I think that is a product defect and not a damaged that i did, because everything else is in perfect condition, the outside of the screen is not damaged.
Now expanxys is telling me that I am in my own, that i have to deal directly with Samsung the manufacturer.
I feel cheated i thought i had 15 days to return a product that has a clear defect.
Beware they will sold you a broken product and will not accept a return
OP, did you use American Express?
AMEX will refund you the money IF the the online retailer will not accept a return.
AMEX will also give you accidental 90 day warranty damage (if you really need to use that excuse).
That's the risk you take by buying from an online retailer instead of a brick and mortar. And it's not as big an online retailer. It's a small retailer in the overall scheme of things.
Yes i know is my fault, lesson learned, an expensive one($609), now i have to find out my options dealing with Samsung
Sent from my Transformer Prime TF201 using xda premium
Wow, this is not the kinda thing I wanted to read while waiting for Fedex to drop off my GN from Expansys. I'll have to thoroughly check out the phone as soon as I open it and make sure there's nothing wrong with it.
Good luck with getting it fixed. Hopefully Samsung will be more helpful than Expansys.
That crack is a known defect. Search this forum for "hairline".
I bought an n7000 gnote from them, but requested for an RMA before it even shipped to my house. I had the RMA printed and ready to go, but upon receiving the phone, the seal on the phone box was already broken. Now I was thinking it was a customs thing bc the US power supply that they included was outside of the box.
Their return policy says there's a restocking fee for any returned non-defective item that is open, so I gave them a call to inform them that the seal was already broken. The CSR told me that it shouldn't have been broken, even though it was an imported international item. So I was gonna get hit with the 10 or 15% (or whatever it was) restocking fee.
I called BS on them, so now its under investigation.
Bottom line is you deal with expansys, you do, unfortunately, take a risk.
They should exchange or refund your nexus. Even if it might be samsung's fault, it's still within expansys' 2 week window for exchange/return.
I'be bought two from Expansys (yakju) and they've been perfect (GSM). They do have a return/exchange policy. If you return, they charge a restocking fee.
Have you called them to talk it over or are you just complaining on the internet? Call, be firm but polite (i.e. don't pounce on them when they answer, demanding an exchange).
I found the tread about the hairline crack ,but it looks like Samsung has not admitted that this is a manufacturer defect so the retailers dont want to exchange the phone under manufacturer's warranty, and you are hit with,(IT IS A DAMAGE CAUSED BY THE CUSTOMER) even though is clear that so many people can not have caused the exact same damage to their phones
Sent from my Transformer Prime TF201 using xda premium
Yes i called then , and i will call then again , i let you know how it goes

I remember why I don't spend money with these people. Some of the worst customer service I've ever encountered. Call back and firmly force them to return it, refund your money, and choose another place that actually values your purchase.
The best way to show a company who is boss is to vote with your wallet.
I called back Expanxys USA, first the exchange department is a voice mail you can not talk to anybody there , then customer service told me that they can not do anything about my problem, that it has to be trough the exchange department email, ok i sent then another email.
After that i called Samsung and they told me that my phone was not registered and it would take 48 hrs to registered, ounce this is done i am going to send my phone to Samsung, the guy in the phone told me that if this problem is a customer damage it is not covered under warranty.
Now i am going to go with all that process, i let you know how they rule, if the problem is a manufacturer problem or not
Sent from my Transformer Prime TF201 using xda premium
forgot to tell you. the expansys returns/exchange department NEVER answers. I left 3 different messages from them, but no return calls. I suggest if you do need to contact them, email is the best way. Although it takes a rather long time for them to reply, they've replied to all of my emails so far.

Play Store Purchase Nightmare...

I recently purchased a GSM Galaxy Nexus from the Google Play Store which I am extremely happy with.
My mother (who is in dire need of an upgraded device) was drooling over this phone when she first saw me with it. So, as a mothers day gift I purchased one for her and shipped it to her address.
She called me when she received the device (last thursday) and told me that the shipping packaging was completely sealed, but the nexus box inside had a broken seal and the device's plastic protectors were pealed off and stuck to the inside of the box.
My mother gave me a ring and asked me to contact Google and would not power on the device because wanted an unopened one.
I rang Google yesterday and informed them I received a device in an opened box with a broken seal. Google said that was a bit weird, but if the device is working properly they see no need in taking any action.
So, this was relayed to my mother and I had asked her to try the device for a day or so and report back. She called me this morning to tell me that the phone was constantly turning off when charging.
I immediately called Google back today and reported the issue and asked for a replacement device. They instructed me to contact the manufacturer to resolve any issues with the device.
Now - I'm at work and I wasn't able to scream my head off, so I kindly ended my conversation with the Google representative.
I have yet to contact Samsung, but I would imagine they would want to service the device.
My question to you is: should I continue to argue with Google about replacing my device or is it really something I'm going to have to deal with Samsung about?
I really don't think that if I purchased something from a store the seller should tell me to contact the manufacturer if the purchased merchandise was open and not functional upon receipt of that merchandise directly from the seller.
Should it not be a simple refund or exchange?
UPDATE: According to the Google representative I just spoke with, Google no longer handles exchanges as of Friday 4 May. They redirected my call to a Samsung representative for an exchange. Samsung took down my IMEI number and processed an RMA for the device. I must now wait up to 24 hours to be contacted by Samsung so that I may provide my credit card information in case I don't return the device within 30 days.
Ask for an RMA
Yes it should but Samsung is only going to tell you send in the device and they will fix it but I wouldn't want a refurbished device that was supposed to brand new

I just think they're hesitant on giving me an RMA for a replacement because I've already replaced my first device due to a grainy discolored screen with a lot of ghosting.
The one I have now is great.
Hopefully they won't give any more troubles with the replacement of the second purchased device.

Updated OP with info on Google's new replacement policy, or lack thereof.
Sorry to hear about your experience. I suspected that if the majority of complaints were legit and were widespread beyond XDA perfectionists , that Google would be contacting Samsung and telling them 'this is your baby', because they were pissed that they were wasting as much resources answering calls, determining whether person merited a new unit, paying postage to return defective unit and send out new one, etc. I love my phone and am happy I got it, but until I know that quality control is better I'd be apprehensive recommending it to others. I know 400 US is a great price for a phone with these features, but it still is a lot of money and for that much people should have no remorse or fears that they're not getting exactly what they paid for.
This is what happens when people abuse returns process. Some people will never be happy and will return 4, 5, 6 devices. I don't blame Google to be honest.

AT&T out of warranty replacement program (INC ACCIDENTAL DAMAGE & NO INSURANCE)

AT&T out of warranty replacement program (INC ACCIDENTAL DAMAGE & NO INSURANCE)
I recently broke my galaxy note 2 front glass. Local repair shop: prob $200 because LCD ok, but even if THEY break it during repair, price becomes $350 because then need to replace entire display assembly. Then an AT&T local device service center (DSC) told me about a program rolling out in some locations called the "Dead End Pilot Out Of Warranty Replacement Program." Here in Southern California it's available at a DSC in Rancho Cucamonga, and another in (Corona? Somewhere in the Inland Empire). If you call the Rancho Cucamonga AT&T location on Archibald St they can tell you about it.
I don't know if this is California only, or specific to this franchise, although I've been told it's coming to Orange County soon. I don't know about other states/regions but the Rancho Cucamonga location in CA may know.
When I called AT&T support they didn't even know about it, but they called the location to confirm, and it's legit.
Replaced damaged Note II with a factory refurbished unit (by Samsung) for $150+tax. You keep your original battery, stylus, and back panel. The other good news: while my replacement started malfunctioning shortly after, my local DSC replaced it this time as a warranty replacement (not sure if this is technically allowed - but my local DSC was aware of the prior replacement at Rancho, and said I didn't need to go all the way back).
So - before you pay someone to fix, or even fix it yourself, you might want to see if this option is available anywhere near you - even if it's a bit of a drive.
Still unclear how this affects original warranty - have conflicting info on this one. One response is that original warranty void (what I'd expect) but that refurbished unit has automatic 90 day warranty from Samsung. Local DSC says my original warranty applies, because it's longer. Anyway, minimum 90 days refurbished warranty, even if your warranty had already expired.
Ironically, this program is even less than the insurance deductible if you have the insurance (that's $200 alone).
This is an amazing program, so here's a shout out to those responsible, and thank you - and I want others to know it's out there.
And to AT&T - if this is being trialed as a possible future company wide program: as a customer, you have gained MANY loyalty points with me for it. This would definitely encourage me to remain with AT&T for the long term.
Re: AT&T out of warranty replacement program (INC ACCIDENTAL DAMAGE & NO INSURANCE)
I used to work at a DSC several months ago and I can confirm this program, however, its only tested in a few pilot locations at least at that time since I left. As far as the existing warranty if you opt into this program, more than likely it will still apply or 90 days, whichever is longer. However, that might be unclear as it is kind of a gray area being the reason why its only tested in pilot locations so I'd make sure to ask. Keep in mind that whatever warranty issues you have when you participate in this program, those warranty policies only apply through ATT and not through Samsung themselves.
So before anyone tries to take advantage of this program, make sure to call your nearest DSC first to see if they're participating in this program and if they have your Note 2 in stock. Don't waste your time in going if they're out of stock and the only way is to periodically call them to check. Normally, they'd perform an exchange by mail if that ever happens, but for this program, it has not been implemented.
Also remember, this program was initiated through ATT's contractor who manage these DSC locations so more than likely, the customer reps through the phone and at the corporate/authorized retailers have little to no information about this program so dont go asking them for info, especially about a warranty dispute.

Re: AT&T out of warranty replacement program (INC ACCIDENTAL DAMAGE & NO INSURANCE)
Wow. Wish I had heard of this sooner. I just broke the glass on mine and got a replacement via the insurance for $200. I was happy with the next day shipping ans wasn't too difficult to submit the claim.
Kind of upsets me that I pay for the insurance every month when theres a cheaper alternative without the monthly fee.
I would have made the drive to save the difference.

Re: AT&T out of warranty replacement program (INC ACCIDENTAL DAMAGE & NO INSURANCE)
If you look it up you'll find there's only one location for at&t in Rancho Cucamonga on Archibald St (that's why I was so specific), however the number is
909-945-3427.
When you call just ask them to verify you've reached the DSC - but it would have to be; unlike some locations that have a store with DSC attached, it's a standalone DSC location.
Another poster below points out that you should call first. They are absolutely right: the program doesn't apply to all devices, and they can't do anything if they don't have a similar device in stock. In my case it had to be refurbished, I assume that's true for all (since it's not a retail location, they might not have anything else anyway.)
In short: call them first, give them specifics, and ask if it's covered in the program. They can tell you if there's stock available, if it's available under the program, what the cost is, etc. This varies by device. If it's not currently covered ask them if they expect it to be (never hurts to ask). I'm the case of the Note 2 everyone of them seemed genuinely surprised to see it so soon. I'm guessing it's because of the popularity of the device.
In my experience, they don't care how the device was damaged either - maybe don't tell them if you're running a side business rooting and reselling on eBay; but otherwise they aren't that concerned. I also found them to be very professional, customer-focused, and helpful in general.
And sorry for that long post LOL. Too easy to blather on when using Swype...

But with insurance your more likely for them to send you a new device. Unlike it being refurbish! But you'll have a 90 day warranty on the refurb...

I suppose the major difference here, is your getting a refurb unit, as opposed to a new replacement unit when using insurance...
Not a huge deal I guess...
Lets hope ATT does the right thing, and quits treating smart phones and their deductibles like a house mortgage....(expensive).....as the deductible is likely more than the unit costs them to begin with...
thank you for the information OP.......g

Just verifying your post.
I called service center and she knew nothing about this program. She called the support center and they confirmed it for her with the 150 dollar price.
Thanks for the help.
My only question is, my phone is rooted... I obviously don't want to return it that way without putting the factory image back on it.

I was stoked when the Rep told me I had to pay tax on the $150.00 and not the tax on the full price, like when you upgrade.

Never had to pay tax on full device when I upgrade.... I always pay tax on the amount of what I'm paying for
glad to hear...
Glad to hear others have had such good luck. Also pleased that it's more widely available.
refurb from most warranties anyway now...
In the last few years almost every electronic device I've had was replaced under warranty at least once and usually with refurbished anyway. Most warranties clearly state these days in fine print that manufacturer may replace with new or "equivalent refurbished item at manufacturer's sole discretion". Since I end up with refurb anyway, sometimes I just buy that to start, if warranty is the same...

When I was getting my replacement I talked with them a lot about how the program works. They told me in clear terms that they don't care if the phone is rooted, if a dinosaur stepped on it, or anything else. They did say you might wish to flash to factory standard so you don't leave any personal info on it, but that's all.

Nope. I don't buy insurance, because I don't think I should be paying extra for something to work as it's designed to, and product quality should be expected. When I see a company shorten its warranty then offer "insurance" I buy from someone else. It's like paying 'protection money.'
I'm afraid we'll have to blame poor product quality for that one.

I highly doubt they're going to send you a T999L - that would be a BNIB phone. You'll most likely end up with a refurb T999 with more issues than you can count.
if its not the t999l im just sending it back i dont need a refub phone since its just battery i just needed my battery replaced but ill keep everyone posted

Please do because I'm ready to go off on T-Mobile for all the lies about LTE support on my current S3.
Dude I doubt they will send the t999l the only way they will do it is if they run out of t999 refurbish ones.

Question, how you guys do warranty exchange? From below after 14 days (CA 30 days).
they will charge handling for the phone under manufacturer warranty and restock fee
