Changing dock icons on TouchWiz - Galaxy Note 8.0 (Tablet) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooti

Well I would really like to change the icons on my tablet but whenever I go edit to move the icons around there is no option to change the docked ones. I have been using apex/nova launcher but find this slows the device down slightly. Anybody know how to change them without a launcher???
Cheers guys

Are you talking about editing the icon images or just actual apps listed in the dock?

If you want to just change the apps that are in the dock all you have to do is hold and drag them to the desktop or trash bin. To add apps to the dock just add shortcut to any screen then hold and drag it to the dock. Changing icons is more complicated because of the lack of built in icon theme support in TW. Not sure you can at this time without being able to use xposed + icon packager or something similar and/or doing manually which is time consuming.

This doesn't work. Holding the icons do not do anything. I can only tap on it to open the app.
And the approach use on galaxy note ii etc by changing to customisable grid in app drawer doesn't work either as dock disappears in app drawer.

Samsung has disabled the ability to change the dock icons for some countries, e.g. stock Australian ROMs. This may have been a result of local legal challenges by Apple. Options are to use another launcher, like Nova Prime, or root the tablet and edit a file to restore the ability to edit dock icons.

Sure, it's /system/csc/others.xml. Find the line <CscFeature_Launcher_ReplaceHotseatAreaInEditMode> and change the value from TRUE to FALSE. Then save and reboot. After that, you can edit your dock.

This has worked on my SGS5

I just got the SGS5 and I don't have any complain about the touchwiz except not be able to move the icons from the doc.
I should add though, if someone is not familiar on how to edit the .xml file please follow below link

[Q] Changing dock on unrooted 2.2

Hi, I am looking to change the dock on my Evo. It isn't rooted and I was just wondering if that was possible? If so can somebody please point me in the right direction? I tried to search, but didn't really know what to search. Any help is greatly appreciated!!
To be honest I don't even know if I am calling it by the right name. I want to change the thing at the bottom of the screen where you click to go to the phone, your apps and add something to your home screen. I would like to pit icons there instead of the stock bar.

See this thread, allows you to restore the stock 2.2 Android launcher. Otherwise LauncherPRO is excellent as well (its what I use).
I installed LauncherPro and the big clock is gone is there anyway to get my clock back and use the bottom icons from LauncherPro?
You need to install a widget for the clock. Either hold down on your home screen and select the widget, or download one from the market.

Do a search for "fancy widget". It's pretty much just like the HTC clock.
I recommend beautiful widgets because you can change the font/look of it to pretty much whatever you want, as long as you don't mind dropping a few bucks on it.

AppWidgetPicker 1.2.3 (Confirmed) Works on ICS

I have confirmed that AppWidgetPicker work on ICS on Galaxy Nexus. If you are using a third party launcher. You should use AppWidgetPicker to better organize your widgets.

Will definitely donate if someone gets this working on the stock launcher
Android's permission system means that apps cannot normally bind widgets themselves. (This is part of the reason you sometimes see missing widgets when you restore a launcher or WidgetLocker from Titanium Backup or similar). Instead the method third-party-apps use is to call another app (AppWidgetPicker, or a replacement for it like this one) which DOES have the permission because it's a system app (hence the unusual install process for this replacement).
The stock launcher is also a system app, and does have the needed permission to bind widgets itself. It's built to ONLY bind itself, rather than use a third party app. This means that the AppWidgetPicker replacement cannot be modified to make it work, however the launcher itself could be.
Curious, what don't you guys like about the widgets-in-drawer? The grid view versus the list, the lack of grouping-by-app compared with boombuler's mod? Both?

Yeah the lack of grouping by app is the worst thing, because certain apps have dozens of widgets and it takes ages to find the one you want. The iPhone style page-by-page side scrolling doesn't help either. I actually like how we can see previews of the widgets but the navigation is a bit of a nightmare right now.

Oh dear, there's a long list of reasons:
1. I now have 5 pages of widgets!!
2. It's visually shocking because everything is a difference size
3. You don't consistently get a view of what widgets will look like
4. It takes longer to get to and then find a widget
Add and app with 20 widgets built in and you'll see. It sucks in my opinion. We need a list based picker for sure, ideally one with a preview mode.
Since you're here... any chance WL can have an option to hide the soft keys on the Nexus so it runs full screen? Also the 'recent apps' button isn't deactivated by WL so it still pops up...
Thanks, works great with the new Nova launcher

[Q] Customising TouchWiz with different home screens / bottom row icons?

Apologies in advance if this is more appropriate in the Themes & Apps section, however this is a question so I thought it should be here.
I've been looking at how to customise a couple of things in TouchWiz to achieve the look I want but also balancing functionality.
Specifically, I'm trying to do the following:
1) Different wallpapers set up for each screen.
I have looked at Multi Picture Live Wallpaper but based on what the dev. has advised, this does not appear to work on ICS so that rules it out at the moment.
I'm also not necessarily keen on using an alternate launcher (tried Nova) because removing the S-Pen doesn't trigger anything when removed with Nova as the launcher - and that's something I'd still like to have working.
2) The icons on the bottom row / dock of the launcher. I would have thought they were customisable but they don't appear to be. The instructions that I found suggested you need to open your app drawer -> Menu -> Edit and you should be able to drag/replace items in the dock area. However, when I try to do this it doesn't seem possible.
For context, I was inspired by this: http://mycolorscreen.com/2012/11/23/white-serenity/ and want to take some of the ideas and apply them to my Note2.
Does anyone know how to do what I'm after?
Thoughts appreciated.

Can't answer your 1st question, because I don't really care much about wallpapers, but in answer to your second question, just long press on an icon in the dock and you can move it off and back on the dock. If you move other icons over the top of existing doc icons, you can create a stack.
Regards,
Dave
Thanks Dave, had tried long pressing already but it does nothing for me.
Pressing and holding icons on the homescreen brings up a message box that says "You can resize widgets, and reposition widgets, shortcuts, and folders by pressing the menu key and tapping Edit."
However, when doing so - the dock disappears.

Thanks, apologies if I was unclear but that does not work either -tried the obvious stuff first.
Is it working for you?
The only thing I can think of is that my rom may be slightly modified by my carrier (Optus, Australia) as it has some a couple of bloat ware apps and something they have done is affecting it.?
Regardless, I had a play with Nova launcher again and given how customisable it is I'm okay with giving up the S-pen pop up menu.
Still trying to figure out multiple wallpapers bit may have to compromise on that too.
Cheers for your responses.

Thanks, I had been trying to get that working but the best I could do was getting it to display one wallpaper even though I had 5 set up.
After realising i had to also change the scroll wallpaper option in the *nova launcher settings* rather than just the Multi picture live wallpaper settings it worked correctly. Now I have multiple different backgrounds displaying.
Appreciate the responses with help guys.
(Still can't edit dock icons on the stock launcher though -which is odd -but as I'm using nova now I'm not overly concerned. )
Interesting that you can't remove the dock icons - I do believe some people had the same issue with Optus branded Galaxy S IIIs. What a bizarre carrier customisation.
Best bet is to flash an unbranded stock ROM.

Worse. Incompetent.
( I kid, I kid. )
Nice to know I'm not the only one experiencing it though.
Only resolution if you want to use TouchWiz and have an Optus handset seems to be flashing another rom.
I haven't run across anything else that is a show stopper for me though and as I'm getting what I want with Nova Launcher (with the exception of the pop-up S-Pen menu when the stylus is removed), I'm reasonably happy.
This is how it's working out so far - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=35096760&postcount=821
Edit: Thanks Onslaught - if they've done it on another handset model as you've suggested it's either a silly oversight or a silly decision.

Hi folks
I contacted Samsung about not being able to change the dock. This is the response I got:
“In response to the customer’s enquiries, unfortunately we you can’t change the dock icons as they are locked in, this is actually due to a patent issue we had with another manufacturer. This is not actually a fault of the handset but a design specification. It will not be changed in the future.
In relation to replacing Google Chrome as the Internet browser, that is also not possible. The user can drag the app onto the home page so he can more easily access it. Again, the dock icons can’t be changed or replaced.”
So if the problem is limited to Optus handsets in Australian then I'm thinking this answer is a bit of BS? Anyone have one of these on Telstra? Vodafone? and have the same problem? I'm assuming everyone else outside Australian can change the dock icons?
Thanks
One of my colleagues purchased a Note 2 via grey import (thinkofus.com)
and hers does not have the same restriction so it definitely does not apply to everyone. Not sure about other carriers in Australia though.

I bought a Telstra branded version yesterday and it has the same stupid restriction, so I guess it's an Aussie telco thing. I have no idea why carriers think this sort of thing is a good idea, it just hobbles good technology, and annoys people at the same time.
Anyway I flashed a generic Singapore 4.1.2 firmware today and it fixed everything up (as well as getting rid of some Telstra bloatware).

The Quick Note pop-up appears on Nova Launcher but the extra home page that appears and takes focus when you remove the S-Pen (only via the Default TouchWiz Launcher) is lost. On reflection, I don't find it that useful as it seems to be more of an introductory / landing page for the S-Pen and when I remove the stylus it's literally just to take a note - which I haven't done much of to be honest. On the additional landing page that appears when the S-Pen is removed, the Quick Note pop-up appears on top of this as well. So in my opinion, not losing much at all by using Nova Launcher.
First screenshot is in Nova Launcher, second is in TouchWiz (already closed out of the Quick Note pop-up).
I just got a virgin/optus Note 2 and I am trying to do the same thing by changing the icon in the dock but can't.
Curious thought on why some devices can change the icon and others can't... For those which can, is it a different model to the GT-N7105?? Maybe an early version?

It appears to be whatever is in the Australian ROMs.
The model isn't necessarily different as grey imports are technically the same.
Internationally imported handsets do not have this restriction and I can confirm I've observed this myself with other Note 2's from colleagues / friends.
So basically, either flash a new ROM, use the suggestion from Beeva in this thread (requires root) or use a different launcher to get around this.

Invisible PIE with LMT launcher

Hi I've been trying endlessly to completely hide my pie controls, a.k.a. make them invisible. I'm using lmt v1.99 and when I put 3 in the pie colors menu I am still left with the shortcut icons. How can I get rid of these?
On a side note I've also experienced issues with getting my pie up while the keyboard is up. I toggle the keyboard listener and that works but only for a short period of time.

It's written in the OP:
To have custom icons for the pie items create the following folder structure and put your own png images into it: "/sdcard/Android/data/com.android.lmt/files/". The default icons have the size 120x96px but other image sizes should also work (they will be resized). You can define custom icons for every pie item and/or for every action (LMT first tries to load the icon for the pie pos, then the custom icon for the action and will use the default action icon if no other icon is defined). To set custom pie pos icons name the png pie[0-19].png where e.g. “pie0.png” will be the icon for pie item level1, item1, shorpress and “pie1.png” will be the icon for level1, icon1, longpress. To set custom action icons just name the png [actioname].png (see command section in the OP for action names – use lowercase, e.g. back.png). Please restart the TouchService after you changed the icons, so that LMT can recreate the pie.
Thank You. Worked like a charm! Gesture control all the way now.

Is One UI Home modding possible ?

Hi,
I'm a bit upset because at some point samsung reduced the icon size on their one ui home app,
I liked them bigger and would like to mod the app if it was possible,
I'd found my way in the code but I'm not sure if and how it's possible to install a rebuilt version of the APK as we can't uninstall the original one,
Could someone tell if it can be or has already been done ?
Thanks
Just get nova launcher prime and call it a day. You wont be disappointed. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.teslacoilsw.launcher&hl=en_US
50 million cant be wrong. Anything can be done then.

I was able to mod the OneUI launcher...its not perfect though.
I have modded it to have the app drawer as 6 columns and 8 rows.
However, the setting of changing the grid in the launcher setting is goofed up, it only still shows 4x5, 4x6. 5x5 and 5x6. if i choose any of these, i do not have any way of getting it back to 6x8 unless i reset the app....
i am not sure if my mod will work on every phone...i can probably prepare a guide on how to mod it.
Good day.
Not sure if this is what you are looking for, but here goes a sugestion anyway.
Samsung has an app called Home Up, that can change some paremeters of One UI launcher, like app drawer grid, folder presentation and backup your layout.
If you are interested, here is the link, and some screenshots
