Cheap Aluminium case from Hong Kong - Galaxy S III Accessories

I'm really pleased with this. Cost me £12 including postage from HK to UK....
It feels great and adds an extra bit of weight to it. Gives the S3 a quality feel without bulking it up too much.
You have to remove your normal battery cover to fit it. It screws together. I haven't actually noticed any detriment to signal, contrary to my expectations.
Here's some pics....

I added a link above. I use GPS daily with Tasker and noticed no Ill effects. I cannot comment on NFC. The back cover is also aluminium so it may be effected.

Its the same case that's been discussed here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2287497
I had bought one and returned it. Same price and place.
Signal was a little weaker but GPS hardly ever got a lock. Sent back within days. Everyone on the thread has the same problem.
Looks nice but...AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE.

There are many cases in that thread. The one in the OP is the hunterf which I was trying to get but couldn't. I knew that would affect signal. I couldn't find a hunterf on ebay or in the uk so I got the cheap one. Signal great as I said

This was the same one i bought. Same case - different printing. I suggest you double check your gps before its too late to return. If your GPS does work, you'll be the only one that owns the case where it works.
Its the all-aluminium case that stops it.

Different = not the same. Clone S3's tell you not everything that looks the same, is the same

I'm sorry you had a bad experience with whatever case you bought. I've had a good experience with this particular case and I am sharing it.

I got the occasional lock using the dud case.
It must be the different print on the back or a new type of aluminium that they use which lets GPS signal through that makes it work perfectly for you.
Might have to get myself another one.

It must be different then. I get locks on the bus. The above screen shot, I walked outside my house. Locked 6 sats in about 15 seconds.
Still no idea about nfc. I assume that will be pretty effected but no way to test

I have this same case in blue. It looks and feels awesome makes the phone feel a bit more premium.
But like said, it definitely affects signal and gps, and because of this i felt that my battery life was worse because the phone was constantly trying to connect.
I still throw it on every once in a while because i like how it looks but always end up going back to my urban armor because of the signal issues.
IDK about OP, but like everyone said it affects signal so be prepared.
Edit: Also I really think that it's the exact same as the HunterF case just with some cheapo branding. But for a 1/4 of the price its worth a shot.

Yes, you should absolutely, always expect an aluminium case to be detrimental to signal. If you already have weak signal, DON'T buy an alu case.
That said, my rudimentary asu tests have been inconclusive. Meaning I cannot prove the case affects signal, nor can I prove it doesn't.
All I can say is I can still fix gps and whilst closely monitoring asu levels, without the case the range was 7-12 asu and with the case the range was 7-12 asu. Networks fluctuate by their very nature so its an impossible test to do scientifically using standard production masts.
Sometimes it appeared that putting the case on lowered the asu signal level. Other times it went down when removing the case and backup up when putting it on. I imagine both these results to be coincidence. For these reasons, I declare the tests inconclusive.

REVIEW: Anker Battery 4400mah Extended Battery w/Cover

Hey fellas,
Ive been lucky enough for Anker to send me a 4400mah battery to test and review for you guys. I've used their batteries ever since the Sensation days and I actually have a 2200mah anker for a spare on the S3. They sent me a Pebble Blue back cover as they do not produce the white one yet. I have a two toned S3 hahah. I just wanted to post pics to give you guys an idea. I will be draing the battery today as it came with 57% out of the box. I will give it its first run tomorrow during my work day. Here are the pics, I will be posting 1st run results tomorrow then for the next few days after that. These batteries usually get better after a few cycles. The phone feels good in the hand, not too big. I just ordered one of those TPU extended battery cases to protect the phone while I am using the Extended Anker. Stay tune for some numbers and updates! Thanks!
Im supposed to get one too for reviewing. But you beat me to it
Sent from my SGH-T999
Forgot to add that it does not say NFC anywhere on the battery. I did go into settings and the NFC box still could be checked. I don't know if this battery has it as I do not use NFC. I'll contact Anker to make sure.

No NFC, jonathan confirmed it. Though i made some recommendations to them to have an option for it with a different price point. hopefully they hear me. Price for this one is about $19.99, i think that's pretty good with that price

UPDATE: 8-14 LATER IN THE DAY, SAME SETTINGS! I'm gonna keep WiFi off at home to see if I can kill the battery and post when it runs out.
8-15: Battery made it through the night. I did not turn WiFi at all on this first day of testing. I will do a second test on the second full charge tomorrow. So far I am impressed! 5 hours of screen time! Hawt Damn
Do you know how much thicker this makes the phone ? I am wondering what kind of case would fit this and also if it would still fit in a car holder.
Just double the size of the battery. Look at the pic I posted of the side view. I actually ordered a TPU case for extended batteries, should get here in a couple days. I'll post when I receive it.

Hello. Any updates on this bat? How it's going on so far? Regards.
I have had this battery for few days.
Medium use - online quite a lot, bluetooth always on, brightness on high auto. Same usage on my old S2 with 2100mAh would have critical warning by about 6pm on day 1.

Not quite... the Korean market S3 (SHV-E210) uses a different battery than the international / US version. Also the Korean market Samsung Flip Cover will not fit properly on the international / US version. The curvature or thickness of the units are ever so slightly different, so the back plate will not click securely into place on the international / US handset.
But if you don't include the Korean S3 model, then I believe you'd basically be correct.
It probably doesn't affect most people on this forum, but it's a significant exception to the rule that should be noted.

I got this silver one .
I'm really liking the shiny metallic look. It's probably not for everyone, but I liked it so much I ordered a blue one too . The case itself scratches kind of easily. It has a small faint scratch mark already and I've only been using it for a couple of days. It's also really hard to take off, much harder than any other case I've tried so far (I've used SPU rubber cases).
I also ordered some metallic battery covers to see if they look any good , got a blue and silver one. I'll update with pictures when they arrive (about 2 weeks >.>).
All in all. :good: I love this metal look.
Edit: The battery covers look really odd in my opinion. The colours don't match the border.
Here's my reception with the case after using it for a while:
I can still connect to GPS but it connects kind of slow, some times fast. I think that's just the gps being finicky though, seems to happen a lot with this phone in my area.
3G speeds seem to be unaffected (according to speed test app when i put on and take off my case)
wifi reception is lowered slightly (not much in my case, might effect you more if you have a weak router).
NFC doesn't work.
Interesting. What's the material? Aluminum? Notice any drop in wifi/cellular signal with this case?

I'm not actually sure what it's made out of. So far I haven't noticed any signal decrease, so it might not be all metal.

Yeah they should be good, they aren't the best case but it works fine. My friend today was using a red version of this and dropped his phone from about chest level onto concrete and the phone was unscathed except for a very minor scratch on the bottom (cause the case doesn't protect the bottom/top for some reason)
Edit: Ah guess it does block NFC. Good thing nothing in canada uses it xD.

Haha. WiFi, on the other hand, is a pretty big issue...
Paul's Modaco patched Google Wallet works great everywhere I've tried it, and I loaded up my Google Prepaid card with $100 so NFC is a deal-breaker with cases for me.
Very happy with my current case. Just ordered a new one since I dropped my phone and the case cracked up the side a little. Did it's job perfectly.

The shipping cost on Amazon is bloody expensive!
OP. Could you please "guesstimate" of the total weight for the whole package? I'm thinking of using some shipping service..
The entire packaging was super light. I'm not good at guessing weight like that. I'll check the packing slip tomorrow and see if it has a weight on it.
So far I love the case and havnt noticed any signal loss. It feels great in the hand.. very premium. Volume button is much better than flat volume buttons on stock phone. Power button is easy to press. Cutouts and fit is phenomenal. Very easy to install. people with headphone plugs that are on the larger side are going to have a hard time with the headphone jack cutout though. My car adapter plug barely fits in.
Overall I'm happy with the purchase and I absolutely love the silver case on the silver phone.
I'm using the www.bestskinsever.com full body skin on my phone to protect the back and screen . highly recommended .. price is perfect .. install was easy and it looks great. can't even tell I have a screen protector or back skin on the phone.

It picks up 2 less satellites and 4dbm drop. His signal in general though is very strong in that area. It's when your in weak signal locations, the case will affect it and become more noticeable.
It's a nice case though and 4dbm isn't too bad especially for an all metal bumper. I remember original ones for the iPhone being far worse and only recently have the new ones with plastic inserts don't affect the signal at all.
I locked on in a second and it narrowed down my GPS location to within 3 meters within seconds.

I'm shocked It even messes with the signal being the antenna are out the back..
On a side note the front looks fantastic but the back is was too big.

Tolerable then, I'll give it a test drive.
I'm wondering if having a poly/plastic skin on the phone would help mitigate the drop in signal a bit, worth a shot when I get mine.

Any body used an Urban Armor Gear case before?

Hey there
I was wondering if anyone had tried the Urban Armor Gear case for the HTC One? From the looks of it, it's fantastic and nothing like I've seen before which makes it not only great looking but also very unique. The black/white mix is just amazing and I have read great reviews about the durability and quality of the case, however I'd like to hear your opinions about it since I will be dishing out A LOT of money to order it online (shipping, taxes and customs) and also waiting a long time to receive it.

I got the HTC Double Dip Flip cover when I first got the device and I like it, however I seldom use the kickstand feature and in all honestly it adds a lot of bulk to the device. When I take it out of the case, I feel like I am using a different phone. The case does help, though, when it comes to the phone heating up and such from use which can make it a bit uncomfortable as I have very pale, sensitive skin.
You don't have to have used it on the HTC One, but perhaps maybe a Samsung, an iPhone, etc. since I know all the cases will have similar qualities, price tags and bulk.
Any advice and/or information would be appreciated.
Thank you!

It should be noted that I have the black one and noticed that pictures are also washed out a bit when using the flash... I think it has more to do with how close the case fits around the flash/camera.
Otherwise, it's a fantastic case, and probably my favorite case of all time. It looks and feels very well made.
Thanks for the replies. I will check out the dedicated thread.
Regarding the flash issue, I am not much of a photographer, in fact I rarely ever take pictures, and when I want I could always just take the case off until I am done, so that's not a big deal. Have you thought about cutting into the flash area, though, so that it wouldn't be covered like the camera isn't? I am sure that could work.

Take a picture in a dark enough environment that the flash comes on, then take the case off and take the exact same picture. You will see the difference. At least I can see a difference. It isn't bad, but noticeable.

Mine arrived today, and installed without a hitch.
Fit was good, but could have been a tiny bit larger.
Just finished installing mine as well. I guess the three holes on it aren't that bad. One for only the camera would have been better. I'm pretty sure you don't need holes for the sensors.
Also if you can get this thing installed on your first try, that is best. Otherwise you have to keep peeling it up with tape to then use tape to get the dust. I was being OCD about it and it took me a while.
Using the 'hinge' method it's perfect just about every time.

Thanks. Hinge methods looks good, I'll have to try that next time. Anyone notice the touchscreen acting up a bit after installing this? Not always responding.
Nope.
Zero problems...
Love this as well with only one thing. Only gripe for me is that it is NOT as smooth as your naked screen. I guess it depends on your fingers but mine isn't. Stylus works well through it though. Overall an excellent value for the price and # of pieces you get. I agree that 2 additional holes are not necessary and makes the screen more noticeable. In fact, since I hardly use my front facing camera, I'd wish they give an option to not have any holes. I'm sure the camera can still see right through it without too much degradation.
I have some of these coming in the mail...would one of you be kind enough to post some pictures?

I sent Talkie Tech a message via Amazon regarding the additional 2 holes. I wonder if they do this for all of their protectors for other phones, tablets, etc.

You'd be surprised. On my Razr M at least, any film on either camera makes the shots look like Vaseline was all over the lens. It's really, really bad. Nigh unusable.

How does it feel? Pretty slick; not a lot of 'rubbery' grab?
Not at all rubbery.

I'm showing 2 SKU's on iLlumiShield's website. The OP link points to ILS14138 and the additional product I found was ILS14136. What's the difference?
******Never mind guys. I found the answer while writing this but I will keep my original question for anybody else that notices. The product on Amazon has the WIFI and LTE version. Not sure what the differences are when it comes to the glass.******
WIFI Version:

LTE Version:

Yeah. Ordered the Wi-Fi one just in case. Assume they are the same.

Nice savings.
Thanks for the thoughts, guys. Ordered a pack for - as of now - a temporary means of screen protection while I wait for some more tempered glass options. Hopefully. 3 for less than $10 shipped is alright in my book, and I certainly won't mind the additional cutouts. :good:
