When will we recieve a Desire Z replacement? - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Year in and year out, we desperately wait for the Desire Z to be replaced by something better (we don't care if its from HTC, Samsung, etc).
When will be the time?
Personally, and based on what we see with the Moto X, it will be the Motorola Droid 5. Yes, I know the Droid 4 was a piece of **** for XDA but now that it is Google's company....Maybe we will see a change with the Moto X and Google's involvement.

No thoughts on this?

I personaly kinda gave up the hope for a better qwerty smartphone
In my opinion from specs the mytouch 4g slide was one of the best with h/w keyboard, but from buildquality no phone reaches the DZ
And the developement for the mytouch is, well, not dead, but very little (guess there are 3 ppl who can port and 1 or 2 who really can build a ROM, yet no one who can port/build sense ROMs :/ )

A QWERTY brother of the HTC One would absolutely be the best. The chances of such a thing: nil.

Yea, I'd love to see a QWERTY keyboarded version of an HTC One - however I seem to remember reading somewhere that HTC has tossed in the towel on QWERTY keyboard phones...

Yah, Still going strong with DZ, And i wouldn't want HTC one with qwerty, unless it also gets removable battery and a memorycard slot. Right now the only upcoming and current phones I'm interested in is the Jolla, and maybe Adaia. Then there is ubuntu edge, that's not going to happen imo.
But Adaia is probably going to be too much on the expensive, in the woods type of a phone with hot swappable batteries, and satellite phone capabilities, running android. And no idea if there will be a hw qwerty.
Really interested in Jolla and Sailfish tough, with better multitasking, since on android only some apps have it. (you can't leave youtube video running in the background when checking mail or something) Also was hoping for a "the other half" with an slide out qwerty, but since looks like the back is only using nfc, and doesn't have a physical connector, it would have to be nfc qwerty with its own battery.
Then there is Samsung note series, my dad got a note 2. It's pretty big, but the stylus is great, somewhat interested in a phone with proper stylus. But i dont like the front button layout on the galaxy line, why mix capacitive and a physical button, its just, eeew.
Also read about a new samsung android FLIP phone with hw dumbphone keypad, and dual screens, could be good. Even Apple added dumbphone on screen keypad on the latest iOS, since turns out lot of ppl prefer it, and can type faster on it, than a qwerty.
Pics of this just popped up on engadget: http://www.engadget.com/2013/08/04/samsung-galaxy-folder-live-photos/
Anyway for now, Jolla is my number one choice for my next phone. Definately if they come up with a qwerty back cover for it.

It would be amazing if someone made a phone comparable to the G2. But I have a feeling no one is going to release a high quality QWERTY phone ever again as there is so little demand (except for us!), such a shame.

Giving up the ghost next month and going with the S3 and buying a sliding keyboard case as an attachment.

Probably the best we can do for now!

I imported a Galaxy S Relay 4G from U.S.
Snappy 4-row QWERTY keyboard, Jelly Bean, 1.4 GHz dual-core Snapdragon. Only letdowns are the WVGA pentile display and 5 megapixel camera which are definitely not high-end.
Compatible with GSM networks after unlocking and has fairly stable CM10.1 port if you absolutely hate TouchWiz. Here's video review to see the phone in action.

Wow that is cool, this would be the replacement option when my DZ dies. Do you know if there's a QWERTZ version?
Cheers, Ralf

Although it's rather fat. Maybe a phone plus an external keyboard when travelling would be better?
Just thinking. Cheers Ralf

Samsung is coming out with a flip phone. Try that

Well, some pictures of a Droid 5 just leaked. Now with Google in control, we can HOPE the bootloader is not as locked down as the Droid 4 and some good ROM work can come to it.

HTC One is Only HTC I liked after DZ. I think it will be my next phone

The new droid with the keyboard looks good, but we would need it to be GSM, and Verizon is CDMA. Hopefully Motorola will make a GSM version.

It wouldnt make sense to release a CDMA only version. The development and production costs would outweigh their gainings.
I am troubled though about both a europe and a US version. Did the Droid 4 get released in europe?

Touch Pro3

Just had a dinner with a friend of mine who is the main distributor for HTC in Europe, and he informed that they will receive the first shipment of Touch Pro3's this summer and they will be on sale in Europe third quarter of this year. This is my main contact for HTC devices and he arranges a Touch Pro2 for me 4 months before it was officially released...He told me that the device will be much smaller and thinner, and soon he will provide me with the evidence including the full specifications Do you guys think this would be something you would purchase or would you rather wait for the Windows Phone 7?

I'm not crazy about WP7, at least the initial release of info. They've killed everything that was great about WinMo and opted for the locked-down, iPhone-like, walled garden approach. I'd love a TP3 with WM6.5.3, more RAM, and a Snapdragon processor...and US 3G bands.
That kind of processor does sound pretty sweet. And the capacitive touch screen. But no hardware keyboard... I don't know what I'd do without it, but thats just me.

Definately but it would have to have the hard keyboard, otherwise it wouldn't be a touch pro would it?!
totally agree with dwboston ...I'm with 6.5.# with better specs Not sold on windows 7 at all so far.

It would be a Touch or HD...The main reason I would buy TP would be because of the hard keyboard...
I'll wait for the first Windows 7 Phone that includes a decent keyboard. Hopefully HTC, but would consider SonyEricsson as well.
I won't be touching a Windows phone ever again after this.
TP2 was a major disappointment for me because of OS, underpowered processor, and (nit picky) the fact that Telus (Canada) would release the version that does not work on their HSPA network.
I'll be swapping to Palm / webOS -- ideally the newer model that will be launched around the same time with a larger display.
Do You Think Screen Shots Will be Released Soon?

I think it would depend on what those specs are... and have a hw-keyboard, of course. I wouldn't buy if all I knew was the name "TP3".
Seriously doubt if I'll be having anything WM again unless something spectacular happens. I like the TP2 hardware but WM really disappoints. I read somewhere that the HD2 is a wonderful piece of hardware crippled by it's software and that's how I feel about the TP2.
Android for me next I think
theres no pictures or specs or anything of the touch pro 3. theres no reason we really need wm7, it doesnt seem to bring much besides a new interface. ill still have my touch pro 2. and if i still have it while the current version of windows mobile dies, i hope android will be as close to 100% running on it as possible. i hope i dont get pushed into buying an iphone.
I would go for HD2+keyboard as TP3..thats my simple & easiest solution for HTC..

Same here. Actually that would be my only replacement for my tp2.
windows phone 7 4 me
The only negs have found with TP2 is
1. Weight ... but it gives a solid feel
2. Faster processor
3. The zoom bar is quite useless - either make screen bigger/create a 'dpad'/make device smaller (not screen)
Have installed ZoomBarPlus today so will see if use the zoom bar more
Other than that very happy with TP2 ...nothing else on maket that would even consider at the moment
i don't see how the tp3 would be the 'upgrade' from tp2, or even tp1 if it's the htc tera as rumoured and specs are indeed as leaked
in fact, it seems like a downgrade and a complete disgrace to the 'touch pro' line (although it only consists of 2 phones, 4 if u include the tytn and tytn 2)
wqvga and a 600mhz qualcomm cpu which STILL doesn't have proper drivers? oh c'mon HTC. our patience is running out
Isn't this old news? Also HTC Thropy is cming this summer. The Debug ROMS are already out on the web....

That's Trophy, I assume...
Only if the TP3 has a processor on crack
I gotta agree that unless the physical specs are much better...such as a processor on steroids, I am quite happy with my TP2.
I like the solid feel, I absolutely LOVE the physical keyboard...and I am perfectly happy with 6.1 as it is super stable (even though 6.5 is prettier). My only complaint is the processor...I want a processor on crack!! Give me that while keeping all the faboo things about the TP2 and I may consider getting a TP3...otherwise, no way!!
As for WinMo7...not impressed with the info out there about it...sounds like a step backwards!!
Tera
I don´t think we will see any Touch Pro 3 in 2010, perhaps in 2011...
As for Tera, I don´t think it´s an upgrade for Rhodium

I want SUPER AMOLED and 4" screen!!!!!
I guess, I will use HTC Desire for a while ... I cannot keep waiting and waiting for new device!
From Engadget:
http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/23/samsung-announces-galaxy-s-android-smartphone/
Would pick HTC over Samsung anyday..
Really is a shame - from seeing the pictures.. They're essentially copying the iPhone UI - with a little bit of Sense aswell..
Can't see myself wanting this at all - only when HTC release the Supersonic will i want something more than the HTC Desire.
Samsung also wants to get sued by Apple.
Seriously though, there are just so many ways to make a sensible user interface. I agree that the bottom four icons look strangely familiarly places, but they are probably exchangeable. Which the icons on iPhone are not, if I'm not mistaking?
Nah I want desire more then this one. I hate the touchwiz interfaces from samsung they never were good in my opinion. Also I really don''t like the look of most samsung devices. They look a bit cheap to me.
If u live in the US then cancel your order now!! Not because of the Samsung phone, but because of this!

like the HD2 4.3" is too big for a phone
Yeah it might look shiny and nice, but don't be fooled.. ;?D
Here's some reason I don't like it:
1. It's a Samsung. They have many great products in many categories, but phones? Nah.. "My" experience with samsung phones (Haven't own one, but friends and family have..) is that you shouldn't expect the best build quality and even if the UI has its pros, the cons will nag you.. Forever! ;?P
2. I think the UI looks a lot (a lot!) like the UI on the IPhone (They must have looked once or twice on the IPhone) with some "extra quirks". And frankly that isn't a good thing.
( - We need a new ui for our Android-phone. - HTC sense is sooo done! - Oh, I know!! Lets copy the [ridiculously] popular IPhone, that should be a good selling point..)
Aim for the Evo 4g instead (or settle with the Desire ;?D )
Just for fun.. tweetphoto.com/15554598

Um...maybe if the handset was GSM. It is going to a CDMA carrier (Sprint). Hate to say it, but I think I will just wait it out for the Desire.
Here is a comparison of the 2
http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/23/htc-evo-4g-vs-hd2-and-desire-fight/
The HTC Evo 4G is a beast of a device, but if you're not on sprint there's no point.
Also keep in mind that the Desire has more RAM (576 vs 512) and an AMOLED screen.
The Samsung is a sad excuse for a superphone, that filthy skin makes it look like a dumbphone OS. Not to mention you won't have the strong community support that HTC devices do.

the icons were the 1st thing reminding me of the iphone
Galaxy S is a just another example of a great hardware ruined with the crap Samsung customization. I really like the huge Super AMOLED screen (actually it is amazing) + 1GHz CPU, but this pitiful copy of the iPhone's UI is simply disgusting, especially when the stock Android is excellent on itself. They simply shouldn't touch it.
And in addition, I still remember how Samsung abandoned their i7500 customers with refusing to release future OS updates for this handset. Personally, I'm going to stay away from Samsung's phones in the future.
After a long night and good sleep, I made up my mind
I will keep HTC Desire Because I cannot stand the Samsung Galaxy S iPhoneness look.
And I have a strong feeling that HTC is keeping a secret superphone with better specs.
Probably: 1.5GHz Snapdragon, 4+" AMOLED screen, 1080p HD recording, TV-out
Why? Because in June, there will be iPhone 4G announcement.
And HTC will use that secret superphone to out-done iPhone 4G.
At least, I will do that if I am HTC, I must have a strategy to stay on top. They don't need to rush another superphone, they have already quite some superphones ... our beloved HTC Desire. If this happen, it would be another 1 year to replace HTC Desire ... not bad eh? Now I am happy.
HTC Evo? Nah, CDMA is useless in Europe, at least in my country.
Agree with the first post.
Much talk about getting the next and the next and the next phone.
Even if you say:
"-Ill go for the new samsung" or whatever, there will always be
a new phone in the pipe-line with a better spec.
You'll be dead before even getting a phone that way.
Desire is a super nice phone.
Right size, and right look if you ask me.

Desire on AT&T sometime? Please?

I'm in love with the Desire, does anyone have any news in this regard? I've googled a lot and there are random rumours.. Even rumours at this point will keep me happy.
Note: Yes, I know, the N1 will work on AT&T. Now we have that out of the way.
Hate to burst your bubble, but I don't think it is coming. US Cellular is getting it, however they are CDMA carrier. As far as AT&T goes...they might be getting the HTC Legend. It just passed through the FCC with bands capable of catching AT&T 3G.
This has been discussed on HoFo. It sucks...but IMHO AT&T is focusing all of their attention on the iPhone coming out in the next few weeks.
One thing to note is that the Samsung Galaxy S is rumored to be released on all 4 carriers and unlocked just like the Nexus One
You could always import a Telstra Desire since they work on the same bands, if I'm not mistaken.

Yeah, I'd definitely get the N1 over the Desire if I had to import.. I don't have anything against the N1, but in some regards the Desire has bumped specs and I'll admit; I really like Sense.
But then again, it'll probably be like me using Windows Mobile's Today screen on my Tilt 2.. I'll get tired of the flashy stuff fairly fast and want simple and fast. Although I've used Sense on my Tilt 2 and XDAndroid and while it's quite slow, it's very nice.. Although I did see someone say they were using a Desire Sense on their N1, so probably not difficult to get it on there if I went that route.

You could flash it onto the NX-1. I haven't been keeping up with Paul's progress on his "project" but...bluetooth for me is crucial. I really do not like the stock Android UI, so the Desire and Sense UI was a major factor for me buying it.
AT&T EDGE where I live is super fast so browsing speed really isn't that bad as some people think. I toggled between 3G and EDGE on my iphone 3G for a couple of days and could easily see the excessive battery drainage

erm.. EDGE = 10k/sec give or take... 3G = 700k/sec (average for me here), faster/slower in other places I'm sure
Yes, less power used on EDGE in almost all cases, even those of it taking less time, but very much worth it IMO.. My last few phones have been 3G and while I've tinkered with disabling it here and there to save power it's hardly ever worth it for the speed and losing data on voice calls.
I'm staring at the Google Nexus One payment page.. Sigh. I really want the Desire.
BTW, I see what you say about the Desire ROM on Nexus... I've flashed a few ROMs but that looks scary.. Hmmffffffffffff..
Well I wouldn't say it is scary, but you might face the usual problems like certain features missing or not working or the freeze-ups and need for reboots. Either way, I would just hold out for a little longer. The NX-1 came out in January, meaning that HTC will probably be working on a new, more powerful phone to release soon.
The Evo and Incredible should be available soon. Both the Nexus and Desire are already available so in a few months...say Q2-Q3...we will probably be seeing HTC drop new phones that are GSM ready.
Bleh, don't search ATT Desire on Twitter, lots of people saying they're sure it's coming.. Makes me twitchy.

[Q] will there be a good replacement in 2012?

I love my phone but it.s getting a little old
i hope they will release a new good qwerty phone this year.
my wishlist is
bigger screen amoled, it doesn't bother me with the size
better hinges
more power, a real top of the line phone, with hoppefully the same overclocking capability
hdmi out for emulatorgaming
better and faster camera, the focus suxs
and a thick phone with a decent battery, none of this ultrathin crap
ARE THERE ANY PLANS THIS YEAR FOR SUCH A PHONE?

Na, like with the desire z, i'll just wait until the first blond 14 year old girl buys it and then don't know how to use it, buys a iphone instead then sell it to me for little or nothing
I payed 210usd for this last year, almost new :0

I'm also wanting to upgrade this yyear, probably going to get an android tablet next month, in which case, if there isn't a decent phone similar to this by july, ill wait for an iphone 5

and i dont like when they make some parts of a phone thin and others thick.

bigger screen, bigger battery and this would be mine
As I've said in numerous identical threads, get the MyTouch 4G Slide. We have overclock, our ROMs are mostly Sense-free with CM9 around the corner, and there is no hinge problem.
I don't think mytouch lineup is even available here.. its ugly anyway. Droid 4 would be the phone to get atm, but i'm fine whit DZ for a year more @least..
For more power i'm getting android tablet once the new ones come out. Probably transformer prime, but first, i want to see whats the Lenovo tegra 3 tablet. I would like a proper stylus enabled tablet.

HTC One X or Samsung Galaxy S3?

Which one should I purchase? I'm planning to buy it tomorrow, please help me out, I already checked the specs and they are almost the same, I'm planning to use it mostly to read documents, use mail (read, answer, download attachments) social networking, I develop apps for Android, so the bigger screen, the better, not planning to use it for gaming, but I guess HTC is better in that field since it has a nvidia graphic chip right? any comment will be helpful, thanks!
The One X will get you the best gaming experience on a mobile device ever thanks to the Tegra 3 processor. However, also because of the processor, you might see more development activity in the S3's forum, but I don't think it makes that much of a difference. If you're not planning to root your device and install custom software, you might even get a bit more battery life on the S3. All in all, you should base your decision on your personal preference: would you like an AMOLED or an IPS LCD screen? would you like Samsung's plastic or HTC's more premium feeling (my opinion)? would you like the Tegra 3 and would you use it for THD games? do you have any lean towards either company (I stay away from Samsung because I've heard horror stories about their customer service experience, but have had a good one with my old HTC devices)? Technically speaking, both devices are very similar and capable of running the same software just as well. But since I am obviously here with a HOX on my table, I haven't looked back for a second and I highly recommend you got for the One X - you won't regret it for a second :good:
You can use the search option. There are too many threads comparing between HOX and S3.
It will be easier for you to decide then.

The One X will get you the best gaming experience on a mobile device ever thanks to the Tegra 3 processor. Thanks a lot, that's actually a really really good opinion, I'm planning to root it by the way.
Both have their advantages and disadvantages over each other. One X looks better, has a slightly better screen and fantastic Tegra 3. S3 is more hackable and has a better selection of roms and an arguably slightly better camera.
Personally I would prefer the S3 purely because of the more active community but I'm still happy with my HOX
Hox has the best rom forum... And sg3 apps that can be use in our hox like s voice.. See my screenshoots

Simple. Yes. I played with the s3 in store even after i bought htc and honestly, i never regret it. Both phones are very alike but i guess sense is what made me choose htc because it's just more convenient.

I went galaxy s, galaxy s2, hox, galaxy s3, and back to hox. No regrets at all except the purchase of gs3, and like mentioned in most threads, sense is way more user friendly than touchwiz.

Aren’t there any mobile phone stores where you live ? I highly recommend trying out both handsets before buying.
The main reason I bought the One X was price, due to special circumstances I couldn’t wait for the price of S3 to drop. But if I had both options at same price I would have gone with the S3. Mainly because of the removable battery, better community support and the ability to root and install custom ROMs without voiding warranty. But having said that I don’t regret having the One X. It’s a pretty good phone.
