[Q] Galaxy S3 (SGH-T999L) -- assert error when flashing from bootloader - T-Mobile, Samsung Galaxy SIII

Hello everyone, first off I want to say I have flashed many different phones with CM over the past few years. I have been a fan of android phones since Day 1. I got a G1 the day they came out and was pretty active in the scene up about about 2 years ago. I had a G2 for awhile as well, loved it... had CM on it as well. Anyway, the problem at hand is this Galaxy S III.
I have flashed many phones for friends and co-workers and whomever asks. I have NEVER had such a problem with flashing a phone as this one.
Apparently its a regionally special model (SGH-T999L).
I have downloaded CWM 6.0.3.1 after rooting with motochopper (easiest root experience ever), then I attempted to flash to CM10.1.2. The phone is currently on 4.1.2. When I attempt to flash from CWM, it gives the assert failed error. I have seen a few other threads about this but they were regarding other carriers (AT&T) and honestly I have tried a million and one things in attempt to get this to flash, I have seriously spent over 8 hours today trying to get this flashed to CM10.1.2 and even 10.1, I even tried using the touch version of CWM and tried TWRP to see if I'd get a different result... But no.. same result.
Does anyone know how to resolve this issue? I have tried everything I can think of on all three platforms... Win7, MacOSX 10.6.8 and Ubuntu 10 and 12.... cannot get it to flash to CM no matter what. I am almost positive it is something I am overlooking. If anyone knows how to get past this please let me know, I will gladly send you a present via fedex.
Thanks in advance.
Senor Y.

Basically in some roms, particularly cm and aosp roms they check the bootloader to make sure its up to date. The T999L is just so new that many devs have not yet added its bootloader to the updater-script. Read the info I have in the thread I linked and if you need help editing the script, let me know.
Ill try to fix and upload the rom shortly, just to make it easy for everyone.

Thanks, I figured it was something stupid like that. I will fire up my windows VM and grab Notepad++ and get down to business.

Posted cm 10.1.2 in the T999L q&a thread. Edited to work on T999L.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda premium

Thanks again man, I followed your instructions and removed the assert lines... flashed with 10.1.2 -- then flashed the gapps back on and in business on the first try.
I am going to pass the link along to #Cyanogenmod on freenode because there wasn't anyone on there who could help me last night.
Senor Y.

Doc,
One last question, is there a baseband update I need to apply for CM10.1.2 / 4.2.2 ? -- I got the gapps installed and there doesn't appear to be problems yet, but the know-it-alls in #cyanogenmod seem to think I need to install a baseband update but they cannot provide me with a link... so I was wondering what your take on that is.
Thanks again,
Senor Y.

It's bad advice. Ignore it.

Very bad advice! !!
Baseband is your modem which should have nothing to do with your rom. They probably meant bootloader. But the T999L only has one version of firmware available right now, so it wouldn't be possible anyway. Theyd probably tell you to use MD5, but that would brick your phone!
Glad you asked!

FYI, (as stated before), the Nightly builds work with the MB7 bootloader

I thought i had an issue w/ the radio this morning, but it turned out to be a fluke... a reboot resolved it...

im not seeing any aosp action happening for the tmobile variant yet which is kinda disappointing but i do know a at&t version is being worked on and i tried it the other day, it's good and works for the most part. you just have to flash our radio after installing the rom. hopefully we will get some aosp/aokp roms soon enough.
Could you send me the link to that version?

Or are you going back to stock and then flashing forward?

Yes.. the first one. No go tho without some other modification. Getprop fail in the script since not supported device..
Restoring nandroid now -- was gonna try flashing something else, but can't get my sdcard to mount (or adb to recognize) while in cwr.

EDITs (abridged).
Flashed MIUI (just for kicks), odin'd modem (since flashable wasn't working).
Booted fine.. looked great. Everything seemed to be working, including S-Pen, except for Sound and calls (lol). Outgoing calls might have been working, but got no audio. Permissions manager was freaking out too.. tons of related FCs. Anyway.. was nice to see it on the Note 2.
Reading thru the thread now.. and see the permissions and calls are a known issue.

I apologize for those that had wanted an evervolv rom ages ago and I didn't come through for ya. So here's a jellybean 4.2 rom. It's rough, but definitely something to work with. I'm gonna keep this post short. Read through it for links to releases, nightlies and source.

No, that's just what is confirmed by me. The device I use to test these builds out is not activated, so data/cell could not work for all I know. This is the first release build I've done for this device, and will need input as to what to fix with Jellybean 4.2.
I appreciate any new development, but unfortunately no wifi is a deal breaker. I'll keep my eyes on it for the next version. Thanks for the development.

1st attempt:
Downloaded rom.
Flashes the antivenom since I was coming from viper.
Flashed rom.
Flashed gapps.
Upon boot com.google.processes failed then setup wizard failed.
2nd attempt:
Flashes different gapps for jb.
Same issues as first attempt.
3rd attempt:
Wiped again.
Installed rom.
Did NOT flash gapps.
Rom booted fine.
No data or cellular connection.
Tried to insert APN for Verizon. While searching for apn phone went to sleep.
Could not unlock phone afterwards. Just a blank screen.
The rom did boot so that is a good start. Need to figure out why cellular service is not functioning and why the gapps are failing.

Will do, if I can ever get the gapps to download over 3g.
Edit: Well, it didn't get past the splash screen with Aero's v15 kernel. I may tinker a bit more, but I need my phone to be a phone, so...
---------- Post added at 09:40 AM ---------- Previous post was at 08:52 AM ----------
Okay, after using the kernel failed I tried a normal flash. I was able to boot it and run through setup with gapps installed. I didn't have wifi or verizon data, so it couldn't log me in, so I skipped all that. It seems to run nicely, but there is no built in camera app. If it had data I would have tried a 3rd party. There is a "nightly" released already today, so I wonder if it has any improvements or if the dev is going to have to work on some device specific fixes for the carrier first. I'm definitely willing to keep trying, but I'd like to hear from the dev as to when we might see the data/phone stuff working.
Thanks for bringing it this far.

So i finally rooted my LGOG v9. Finally!!! Now i want to flash because i cant wait for jelly bean. But im like so clueless. Like what are gaaps?? can someone please show me how to flash a good cm roms. Or make a vid!!!!
You should google first, I know everyone was a first timer at one point, but at least try googling how to use recovery to flash roms.
Do that, and follow the OP installation instructions, and you'll be fine.

Don't think that Rom will work for him. Chances are he has upgraded to the latest version of LG's firmware. And I doubt he will have luck trying to downgrade. Maybe link him to Houston's jb leaks. They flash problem free without having to downgrade.

Your best bet is to read, read, read. Each device may respond a little bit differently to each ROM, and what apps you install can have an effect as well. It can be a long process, but the only way to say what ROM works for you is to try it

[Q] Before I flash CM10 - Questions

I rooted my phone last year using the Toolkit. I am still on stock, I just wanted root so I could backup my apps with Titanium Backup. Now additional Android versions have been released, I would like to flash a ROM. CM10 looks to be the ROM to flash.
1. Since I already have root, do I simply flash the ROM in CWR?
2. Does CM10 include any special kernels and/or radios or do I need to flash these separately?
3. In this Tmobile SGS3 forum, what the difference between the T-Mobile Galaxy S III Android Development and the T-Mobile Galaxy S III Original Android Development forum?
Just follow the instructions in the thread for whatever rom you want to flash. Make sure u have the latest recovery as well. And most importantly, make sure ur flashing the correct rom for your phone so you don't get a brick.
If you flash an aosp rom you'll also have to download a gapps (google apps) package otherwise you won't have any google apps or the playstore when you flash the rom. You won't have to install anything else if you flash a touchwiz rom because they already have the gapps included.

One more thing I forgot to mention. If you're flashing CM10 you might want to flash a stable release and not the nightlies as its your first time. Those usually have more bugs.

1. Yes
2. In a way, yes. You should update your bootloader if you have an old one. There's a flashable one(md5, latest one) in the Android Development section. If you don't have one of the latest bootloaders then you will get a status 7 error.
Other than that, no.
3. I believe Original Android Development are basically original roms and kernels. The regular Android Development are basically touchwiz roms and other roms that are built from roms in the original section.
Basically if you took Cyanogenmod and added your own tweaks and and mods to it, you would post it in the regular development section.
This is what I think it is. If I'm wrong, anyone feel free to correct me.

Always read the OP and follow full instructions. Check the posts under the OP, they may contain additional information.
Also read the last few pages of the rom you plan on flashing. Just to be aware of any issues anyone has reported. Cyanogenmod may have some bugs which could affect your every day usage.
Know what you're about to download instead of mindlessly installing something you'll hate.
Back up music and pictures from your internal sd card. You may get the /0 file.

Installing a ROM...?

Hey guys, I know I'm new, I mean, like ONE DAY new, but I've been posting around, and trying to help people out.
So, my question is, how in the H*ll do you install a custom ROM?
I've been seeing things ALL OVER the place about "Oh this ROM is Soooooooo coooolll!" but I have yet to find a decent tutorial on how to install one.
Do I just flash it on? And, if so, should I even get a custom ROM if I have no Nandroid backup?
Also, what's the average size of a ROM, and in your opinion, what would be the best ROM for this phone?

so to add a bit more to this you should go in and read the everything about the Glide.
read that will pretty much walk you through the rooting of your glide and backing up of your special esf folder and the backing up at your ROM.
then you're going to update your rom to the latest version that's available which is 4.0 4 and then you're going to follow that thread that I linked
that will get you to the light ROM and the light kernel.
