Roaming on an AT&T S3? - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

Do AT&T phones roam here in the United States? I'm new to AT&T and normally I always have signal but recently my company has me working in a new area where I virtually get NO signal. I'm always getting the circle with the line threw it, it seems like.
I just came over from Sprint because we have no LTE in my area and the 3G was a JOKE! AT&T has LTE almost everywhere I go and like I said, I normally always have full bars but in this one city I do not.
On Sprint, I could roam over to Verizon if I had no signal and it worked great.
I'm wondering if you can roam or force roaming on an AT&T phone the way you can on Sprints?
I do know that Verizon, Sprint and T-Mobile all work fine in the same area I'm having issues with AT&T.
Thank you.

Yes they automatically roam to other compatible carriers who have roaming agreements with AT&T. However, your phone won't indicate you are roaming. There is no cost to nationwide roaming, so ATT feels it's better to just make it 100% seemless.
If you use more that 100mb of data while roaming you will get a threatening email, text and letter. They will then change your account so that in the future you will see a roaming indicator when you are roaming.
You won't roam to Verizon or Sprint because their networks are not compatible.

I wondered about the roaming data stuff. If you were to move to an area where you are not under AT&T coverage, and continue to accumulate, will they be willing to let you out of contract without the ETF? After all, you would not be responsible for AT&T lack of coverage in the area. I have looked at a couple of locations while in the market for a home that does not have AT&T coverage and I am only 8 months into contract. I don't want to tally up another cost if I don't have too. I am not intentionally moving there to get out of contract, but rather the prices and locations of the homes are right.

Should I go for Verizon touch pro 2 or something else??

Hi
I'm new to the US, and I'm not familiar with the wireless companies system here..
I have some question:
1. Which service provider is better? I'll be living in Berkeley, CA?? I keep hearing that At&T has bad reception.. which one should I go for??
2. The 30$ data plan: all companies say that this plan is unlimited, but I keep reading (at least for Verizon) it's 5 GB/month.. is this true?? and are there any companies that offer real unlimited data plan...
Because I was thinking of using my phone as a modem for my PC, I don't want to pay more 30-40$ for DSL if I already have a true unlimited data plan
3. Roll over minutes: does this apply only to AT&t, or all carriers?
Thanks in advance guys

I just left AT&T due to extremely poor customer service. AT&T is the only carrier that offers rollover minutes, but their 3G coverage is spotty, and when switching from 3G to Edge or vise versa, you will experience a lot of dropped calls. If you want to use your phone as a modem with AT&T you have to get a tethering plan which will run you $60/month. Verizon has a much larger 3G coverage area, and you don't have to worry about the network being burdened by iPhone users. Sprint has rolled out 4G coverage in some areas with plans to expand. Sprint has cheaper calling plans, but their subsidized phone prices are higher. All in all, do your research, and check online for reviews of coverage, network speed, and customer service.
1. reception obviously varies by location. VZW probably has the best claim to the best nationwide coverage--their business model has very much focused on network building, and up until very recently, their phone selection sucked because they didn't invest as much in securing great smartphones. Alternatively, ATT has focused investment heavily on having great phones, and haven't focused investment as much on building any of their networks.
That said, ATT has great phone reception in a lots of metropolitan areas. There might even be some areas where they have better coverage. And while their 3G data coverage isn't nearly as broad, where it exists, it has been tested as being the fastest (especially when you're not using an iPhone).
2. No, all wireless carriers have a cap of some kind. Further most will charge an extra $30ish a month on top of the $30ish a month for smartphone data for tethering (using your phone as a modem), and they'll still have a data cap.
3. I don't know VZW's plans.
ive been with ATT for YEARS and their costumer service can kiss my ass because i never use it. why? because they offer best reception where im at. why would i want to find out how good t-mobiles costumer service is? i just want a reliable network. all carriers have crappy prices and conditions here. just find the one that works for you and dont listen to what anyone else says. why would you care if verizon has 3g in montana and att doesnt if you live in LA?? its irrelevant. find the least crappy one for you and stick with it.
Do some research on the difference between CDMA and GSM networks. One may work better than another in certain situations.
T-Mobile has cheap rate plans and free tethering.
Sprint has a WiMax network rolling out, although all of the carriers are working on LTE or some other standard of 4G- Not really a concern at this point, since few phones support it.
Verizon has the best customer satisfaction ratings, but their phones are often locked down with software.
AT&T has a history of dropping calls, but has the fastest recorded data speeds.
No matter whom you may chose, you will end up disappointed over some facet or another. You will need to get DSL or some other form of land-based internet, unless you can keep yourself constrained to the 5GB data caps that ALL of the carriers have.
I guess I'm gonna go with verizon then..
I asked a Veizon representative today about the Touch Pro 2, and he said it's only CDMA ... although on their websitethey say it's GSM Quad Band!!! Is there anything that I'm missing?
Will I be able to use out side the US if travel home?
cheers

Yeah, it's kind of misleading. The Verizon Touch Pro2 is actually a CDMA/GSM hybrid device, which works on Verizon's CDMA network or any GSM network. In theory, you should be able to use it on any GSM network in any country as long as you have a valid SIM card.
you cant trust advertising. it makes it appear that all options are shiney. verizon claims all of its wireless technologies as 3g no matter what they are, whether they have speeds slower than atts 2g or worse. the verizon touch pro will not actually work in the us or canada on gsm. you also need to pay for vodofone service separately to get international coverage. you can flash a radio that will let you use atts network but youll loose the cdma network verizon uses. sprints 4g network is not as promising as i hoped. its slower than atts 3g network and to use it you have to buy a $10 1-day pass that will let you use 4g in about 10 or so cities. its also not on any phones. in terms of data or unlimited plans, i would probably have to recommend t-mobile. even though i think they have the ugliest version of the touch pro 2. verizon does limit there unlimited plans to 4gb a month i think. and yes att is the only one with roll over. i never use my minutes so i up to about 10000 minutes rolled over. i will never be charged overage as long as i live.
I was with ATT when they were known as Cingular for three years. One day I got a call and they said I was using it off their network too much and I had to stop it or they would cancel me. Since I was not even living in their area, it was not going to happen.
So I signed up with Verizon, which did not even sell phones within a hundred miles of where I would be using it. That was in March of 2007. I went to Alaska for 16 months where it roamed constantly. Not a peep from Verizon about not being on their network. When going to a remote village for more than a month where no cell phone would work, I would just call them and they would suspend my phone for the time I was there. No bill at all and no charge for turning it off. So I have to say the customer support from Verizon is the best there is and ATT is the absolute worst.

I purchased my VZW off contract. Unsubsidized is probably about $500.
Different carriers have different rules for their prepaid services. With GSM carriers, TMo and ATT, it's easy to pop a prepaid sim into any phone. With CDMA (Sprint and VZW), I'm not sure. Best bet is to call and ask.
well i had sprint for ever...I switched to tmobile.. to get that tp2 free through wmdeals.com even though coverage sucks at my house im happy.. I have wifi for data when im home.. when i leave my home i have edge service everwhere.. til i start getting close to mesquite ( texas ) it goes to 3g.. but edge works great with opera mini.. and for updating certain things.. but so far tmobile rocks..

That's where you are wrong. They did cancel me and one of my brothers living in another town shortly after I got the call and letter. The explanation was they had contracts with other providers to cover you when your were roaming. And roaming was fine, as long as you did not do it too much. I roamed all the time, for about three years.
I called Verizon today, and the representative said that I can't use their prepaid service on a smart phone... although I'm not really sure about, as she sounded clueless, and I had to do lots of explanation until she got the basic idea..
anyway... I like really the verizon version of the Touch Pro 2..
If I go for month-to-month and get it for full retail (490$).. can I cancel with Verizon after that, and unlock my phone, then use it with some other network like T-mobile or At&T????
I never used CDMA before, and after reading some info, I think GSM is better for me, at least for now...

You never know with reps. I seem to recall that VZW's prepaid might have some unlimited data intended for dumbphones, which of course they wouldn't want you to use with a smartphone.
There are MVNOs, like Page Plus, that use VZW's network, but have prepaid plans where they probably wouldn't be concerned about smartphone usage (pay per kb instead of unlimited).

You can get it unlocked here and use it on ATT or TMo (minus 3g, 2g data still works), and as to whether you can cancel after the fact without penalty, it depends on exactly what you signed up for at VZW.

well then double check because att hardware can not utilize tmobile 1700 band. if you in the country you are never going to use another carriers network. and roaming only applies to out of country. even if you stand anywhere on the canadian or mexican borders, you wont be charged roaming. the system isnt that fd up.

Well, that's not entirely true. AT&T devices can use T-Mobile's network, just not HSPA (3G), and vice versa. Before I got my 8925, my main phone was an old T-Mobile Blackberry 7200 which I unlocked to use on AT&T. It could make phone calls and browse at EDGE speeds just fine. The 3G bands are f*cked up internationally since they often differ by country and carrier, but the EDGE and basic GSM bands are pretty much compatible with any GSM phone (since most GSM phones are Tri-band or Quad-band capable).
In addition, it's perfectly possible to use another network in the same country. If a company like AT&T doesn't have infrastructure in a remote area and wants to add service there, they'll often strike a deal with a local carrier who does. It's usually a seamless transition for the user, and it doesn't generally cost the user a cent. Rather, AT&T is the one paying the local cellular operator for allowing the AT&T customers use the local carrier's network as opposed to the alternative of having no coverage in that area. AT&T got mad at texascbx because he was costing AT&T money by roaming on these local carriers, which AT&T had to pay.
Lastly, I know people who live near the borders and they always are careful to see which operator they are using. One of them lives near the Mexican border, and has to make sure he's on AT&T's network before he makes a call. If he doesn't check, he might be roaming on the TelMex network and will get billed outrageous fees for a simple call, even though he's in the US.
I was at the mall today, and I talked to a T-Mobile guy, and he said I can get the T-mobile version of touch pro 2 for full retail, and I can use it with their prepaid plan without any porblems.
Then I spoke with a Verizon representative, and he said that I can't do that on their network, however I can buy the device with out a contract and without any plan...
So my Final question (and I guess fortunz answered before, but I still feel like asking coz I don't want to through 500$ away)... If I get the Verizon Touch Pro 2, and get it unlocked here

[Q] G2 on AT&T?

Hey guys, new to Android and T-Mobile. I got a G2 last week, and I live and work in kind of a fringe area for T-Mo coverage. AT&T has good coverage out here, but the G2 doesn't roam over to ATT, I can't even register on their system when I select it in the mobile networks settings. My question is- how can I set the phone to roam onto their system when I lose T-Mo coverage? (I have heard that T-Mo can roam to ATT on EDGE). Thanks!
As far as I know, the only way to use AT&T on the G2 would be to SIM unlock the phone and use an AT&T SIM with an AT&T account. The TMO SIM won't just allow you to roam because they don't have a reciprocal billing agreement --- though I am no expert on this.
I believe, though I could be wrong, that the G2 does not have the ability for 3G (UMTS) data on AT&T. As you stated, if you could connect to the network, Edge should work.
One solution would be to switch to an AT&T SIM and use the Samsung Vibrant, which has the ability to connect to one of the two AT&T 3G bands. Of course, if you want to use AT&T regularly, getting an AT&T phone would be a better solution. So, for you, unless you want to switch to AT&T, wifi might be your only solution.
Ugh! That is exactly what I was hoping I wouldn't read lol. Well, I do really want to stick with tmo, just wish my phone would auto roam to att when I lose the tmo signal. Thanks for the reply!

I asked around at work a bit, and there are cases where you can roam on AT&T's network. These cases exist in areas where T-Mobile has not, cannot, or will not build out a network. In these cases, they contract with AT&T to provide their customers with network access. Some phones will show roaming, but I think the software, at this point, has made it a seamless experience, and you don't even know you are attached to AT&T's network. For billing, purposes, if you have a national plan, you are not roaming.
This doesn't help you, but I wanted to clarify my blanket statement above.
Check out the coverage map (Select NO for Are you a Rep, then go to the Data Coverage Map):
compass(DOT)t-mobile(DOT)com
Unfortunately in your area of CA, there is no roaming partner.
The only roaming in CA is in some parts of N. CA up Hwy 1 and 101, towards the Oregon border, and in the 395 corridor.
I'm thinking of upgrading from my HTC Rhodium on ATT to a Desire Z (also on ATT). Is there anything I should be looking for to make sure it will play nice with the 3G network?
Thanks

[Q] Possible Roaming Problem?

Hi All,
I live in Kansas where in a lot of places service can be poor or not existent. While visiting my family and my girlfriends family over Christmas, who live in two different areas in Southeast Kansas, where both phone and 4g/3g/1x data signal does not exist from Verizon. US Cellular is the main carrier for service in both areas with great coverage and I noticed that my new galaxy nexus did not automatically connect to the US Cellular network in either location for roaming. I was left with no connectivity at all for the entire weekend
My question is there a reason why my galaxy nexus did not automatically connect to the US Cellular network to roam?
Also is there a way to force my phone to connect to US Cellular when I am in these dead zones for Verizon?
Thanks in advance?
As a side note, I have the Data Roaming checked in the Mobile Network Settings and I have the System Select set to Automatic.
Well I broke down and called Verizon Wireless technical support today.
The tech that I spoke with checked the two areas that I go to and confirmed that Verizon is mostly non existent. He then went on to say that the phone should roam in both areas and he did not have any answer as to why it was not roaming.
His solution to my problem was to purchase a prepaid US Cellular phone and forward my calls to it when I am in these areas. I must admit that it is a solution, but what an asinine thing for a Verizon employee to tell a subscriber. He also stated that Verizon just needs to add more towers in the area, which I can almost guarantee will never happen.
So as of now I am still at a loss as to why my phone is not roaming in these areas.

Thinking of going to Sprint from Verizon.

Sprint now offers 4g lte in my area and really would like to have unlimited data again. Verizon put me on 4gb data plan on which I now pay more and go through the data in no time. The largest and most reliable network is useless when you can't use it. So I'm going the Sprint unlimited data plan. Is there anything I should know about before switching our a reason as to why I would regret the switch? Im bringing my unlocked note 2.

If 4g is available in your area, I would say go for it! Sprint is actually a great provider.
Unless you have issue with VZ in your area and using more than the standard data cap, I would not suggest go to sprint at this ponit. (long time sprint user).
They are currently in the network transition and got so many crazy call-drop, data drop signal.
If no compelling reason, no need to switch.
Go for it. I did the same thing as u. Left Verizon wjen sprint got LTE in my area. Speeds are great and the devices have unlocked bootloader unlike Verizon that locks everything.
Sent from my SPH-L900 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
I would see how other sprint users like the service in your area. I'm in an area with LTE. I don't see nothing like Verzion's speeds, but it's still pretty good to get the highest bandrates for the services. You'll want to see if there are dead signal pockets in the area you frequent and so forth.
The service can be frustrating when they're working on the network. You'll see anything from really good bandwidth to can't get a connection. There was a good month where LTE was slower than 3G.
I like Sprint and have been with them for over ten years. They're not perfect, but still the quirks of Sprint, usually, don't bother me.
I had Verizon 4G then they did away with unlimited, now I have Sprint 3G
I'd rather have Sprint 3G unlimited than Verizon 4G limited.
I'm done with verizon and their phone lockdown policies as well. It's my phone I paid for I should be able to do with it as I will.
Verizon is the best service I have had to date; that's customer, call, and data. Only problem is that all that comes at a premium price. But if you have a good deal, a grandfathered plan, or can afford it, by all means stay with the best.
As for Sprint, they have been the very worse for me. Only good thing about them is unlimited data but even considering that, their data suck in my area. Customer service reps arent that bad but the company will gouge you at every opportinity. For me, they extended my contract without notifying me and when I went to change providers they told me I had to pay etf. Worse part about it, they said id have to get a court order to see where I agreed to contract extension. STAY AWAY FROM SPRINT!
Your unlocked Verizon Note 2 can't be activated on Sprint. If you can verify that Sprint has good 3G & LTE service where you live then I'd say definetely go for it because Sprint will not have unlimited data forever. If you wanr to save a lot of $$$ each month and you can tolerate the data problems in some places, then go for it. But you might want to wait till the Note 3 is released. That would be the time to switch.
Why can't my unlock note 2 be activated on Sprint?
CDMA phones are not locked in the same way GSM phones are. Sprint and Verizon limit the phones carrier use by their ESN. Your Verizon phone's ESN is not listed in the Sprint database. Therefore it cannot be activated on Sprint.

[Q]Help me understand how domestic GSM roaming works

My history with phones has been CDMA for over 15 years. Only now have I made the jump to T-Mobile and GSM. So I'm not familiar with how roaming is supposed to work.
The way I understand it works on CDMA is that the PRL file contains the list of preferred towers. When you are near a home network tower, your phone uses that tower. When home network is not available, but a compatible network is, your phone will roam to that network. Then with edits to the PRL or apps like Roam Control, you can force your phone to roam on another network (to the dismay of your provider).
With GSM I find that there is no app like Roam control. Is this true? But built into the settings, I see that you can scan for available networks. So I've done this and ATT is in the list. If I try to switch to ATT, it tries to register on ATT, but then gives some warnings and then tells me that it can't connect. Why is this? Is it just my phone or are do they all behave this way?
I've been in areas with the N3 where T-Mobile has no network (not even E or G) and the phone stays without a network connection. It does not pick up ATT when I see people with ATT service able to access data just fine.
Am I doing something wrong? How does this roaming on ATT work?
(if it matters, I'm on the stock rom rooted de la Vega)

It doesn't pick up ATT because the sim card you're using is a Tmobile one. You need an ATT sim card to use ATT service. GSM is not like CDMA in that way. If you have no Tmobile connection, you have no connection, there's no way around it.
Another reason that ATT doesn't work is that the phone is locked to tmobile's network. You cant use straighttalk, or at&t with it unless you get the unlock code.

Wait, wait, wait....
I was told that a difference between a pre and post paid plan was the ability to roam. This is domestic roaming, not international. So my assumption is that means when I look at a coverage map and see areas that are labeled as "service partner", this is where T-Mobile has agreements to poach off of ATT's network. So this wouldn't be available to prepaid customers, but should be to post paid. Isn't that true?
On CDMA, when I roam from Sprint to Verizon, there is an indicator that tells me I'm on a roaming connection. I still have service, it may be throttled, but service nonetheless. What happens when I go to a T-Mobile "Service Partner" area. Does it tell me that I'm roaming, or does it still say it is a T-Mobile connection? And shouldn't it connect automatically? And would it only roam on those "Service Partner" towers or would it pick up ATT in a T-Mobile area where T-Mo's connection sucks (say in a building where ATT works and T-Mo doesn't)?

This is the part that you're confused on. Tmobile will never do that. It will only switch to a partner network where tmobile has agreements to do so. So if you're in a building in San Francisco and there is no tmobile coverage, but there is ATT coverage, you're stuck with no service. But If you're in Montana, there is no Tmobile service but tmobile has an agreement with ATT to use their service, it would use it then.

I was afraid that was the answer. So instead of being controlled tower by tower on the device itself (with a PRL like CDMA), it is controlled tower by tower on the towers themselves?

Yeah but to be honest though in most areas its going to allow roaming because of the fact that there is a big metro area or widely known or h re any coverage area. Everywhere I've gone that I was roaming on AT&T network AT&T was big in that area. Like for example upstate New York its pretty much either Verizon or AT&T and I was roaming on AT&T near Dansville, Arkport, Etc... Buffalo and Rochester area great when it came to LTE.

But did those areas have any T-Mobile service at all? I was hoping that roaming meant att would pick up the T-Mobile holes around me (big holes in buildings). From what I'm learning, that will never happen. Unless there is some sort of trickery that can accomplish this I don't know about....

In some areas I was getting edge, in other parts it would have no service at all and it would roam on AT&T.

No, sadly there is no trickery or anything that can be used to roam on AT&T when Tmobile hasn't partnered with them.

Lol. To put it simply. If at&t allowed tmob users to roam on their network like you wanted, everybody would jump on T-Mobile and save some money. Those roaming agreements cost money. Usually these smaller carriers, T-Mobile included, figure the cost to profit to population density ratio and decide where they should buy roaming from bigger carriers. And I am sure this situation is very few and far between, but I wouldn't be surprised if Verizon and at&t have a handful of roaming agreements with sprint or T-Mobile in a few areas for whatever reason. And these would likely be in the Midwest, possibly northwest america since the pop. density can be so low in many areas it is more economical to for them to do that than build out. Remember the major 4 carriers we have now bought up a lot of smaller carriers on there way to being the major players they are now.

Perhaps, but this is in effect how CDMA roaming works. It is not so specific as GSM apparently. Even in a sprint saturated area, if I was in a building where only Verizon was available, it would roam to Verizon. And knowing how it works means that prl edits make it possible to put the phone on the network you want (although it's a sure way to get slapped with charges or booted from the carrier of you abuse it).

Wow, to the OP - I'm in the same boat; big wake up call! I'm coming from Sprint, who I'd been with since 2002... free roaming was their saving grace as I had service pretty much everywhere. In Colorado, this is huge in the mountains (Estes Park specifically for me). Switched to Tmo in January and couldn't be happier -- even used free international roaming for a week in Nicaragua and was blown away with how good of a feature this is! Decent data coverage nearly everywhere in a 3rd world country! Now here I am 60 miles from home and I have no service anywhere in Estes Park!
I tried the suggestion here, by a Tmo rep stating the Note 3 won't roam due to a 'bug' ( http://www.pocketables.com/2014/02/enable-data-roaming-t-mobile-samsung-galaxy-note-3.html ), but no luck. I do a search, try to connect, but it fails every time. See attached pics.
good explanations everyone, good info for starters
