Sony should learn from HTC - Sony Xperia ZL

I like my ZL more than my iPhone 4, but after seen a HTC one and how the speakers work and where they are, Sony should learn from it and make the next xperia's speakers better and on the front or down side like the iPhone. I am however like more how the HTC one have the speakers, man what a big difference. Do you guys agree?

Well im for one a fan of both Sony and HTC...been using it for years and have fun with it...what I like about HTC is when it come from software, I like the widget... Big, useful and nice design unlike Sony widget...it's small and not nice to look when on big screen...kinda boring...but I like the transparent in home screen...both I like about Sony and HTC is the status bar...if you think about it, both of them have the beautiful status bar...only both of them have a horizontal battery icon, not vertical like the others..same like iphone...and look kinda nice not like others which look kinda cartoonish...I have many others but too much to say...and about hardware wise...the design on both of them is premium to hold and beautiful to see..about the speaker position, I don't care where they put it unless its not covers with my hand when I hold it and hope it loud enough to heard....speakers in front is useful when listening to music and watch movies and that a great advantage in One..Sony who have been in entertainment business should know better to not only put listening pleasure only when putting a pair of headphone...on when I agree with you on this one but not want to Sony to use the same aspect as the One, it will unbalance the design aspect...but just hope for the best I think...?

In all this years I haven't used the phone speakers even once. I think they should stay as cheap as they are so we don't have to pay an abnormal price for the xperia like the HTC One. It costs 150 Euro more then the xperia z.
I know how we laughed at the HTC commercial because their only argument was the speaker position. Wth do you need the speaker on a phone for?

Agreed.. I used it only sometimes during a call..but that's about it..I don't care about the quality..I guess on the front makes more sense but I wouldn't pay more for it

HTC has best speakers at the moment, but this is still not it, the sound is still shallow/dull. If I want to listen music I will use my hi-fi system not a smart phone

err I think it htc one has more much more then loud speakers going for it. Screen, UI, stability, design, smoothness, hardware. The only things I prefer my ZL over my HTC One is the notification light, ext memory and possibly camera and all other depts. HTC One kills it.
So SOny could learn a lot from HTC.

Bought one of the BT/wired sony sphere speakers if I want to play music louder on the go. For general phone use, I really don't care as long as it's good enough quality to use speakerphone without it sounding like complete crap (which it is).
I really doubt this is any kind of a major purchasing factor.

millions disagree with you. Why pay for additional speakers and have to carry the buggers around when you can have built in front loud speakers!!
I owe ZL and the speaker sound is crap compared to HTC One and that is no exaggeration.

I'm not comparing other phone just ZL..out of the 2 One is the one, we all know which One is outselling the other. Had I not HTC one to compare to ZL I probably sound like you but fortunately I'm not a fanboy of either just prefer better smartphones.

A phone speaker is made to play notification sounds and for handsfree calling, nothing else. To play music, use decent speakers. I hate it when idiots mess up music by playing it through the tiny speaker of their mobile phones.

It is not just for music, with a screen like the ZL, you can watch movies and videos too. The quality of the speakers always matter and perhaps does not matter to you but other people who watch or listen to multimedia in their ZL is very important

Only my opinion - ZL's back speaker is very decent, I can say above average, and satisfy completely for watching movies, youtube etc. If ZL will have front speakers it will be bigger, but I had bought ZL because it has perfect dimensions for 5'' phone and again my opinion, ZL is one of the best phones in the market at the moment:good:

I can agree with you completely regarding improvements, there's always place for improvements

I disagree, if a video has a sound that requires good sound i just use my earbuds, if more then one person would like to see it the smartphone is note the best gadget to display it (specially one with poor display angles like ZL). I do agree that the speaker should be louder (it's hard to hear waze directions if my car's radio is on), but that's all, all other function of the cel speaker only requires an ok speaker.

Sometimes I don't know if we are talking about same phones. My ZL's speaker is even too loud, volume never at maximum and no problem listening radio and navigation directions ...

Ermmm. No. Stability and fluidity is comparable. And nope, Xperia Z have a nicer design, though it's a personal preference. Hardware? Please be more detailed?
And nope, HTC One simply don't kill anyone. Sony sold 9.6 million phones last quarter which thrashed HTC, Motorola and BB's figures.
This shows that Xperia Z is more appealing to consumers compared HTC One.

I disagree. The launch of the Motorola X was this majorly hyped event by Google. Yet, looking at the X as a ZL owner, I see that Sony did it right. The ZL is the phone for those who want the biggest screen on the smallest body with no compromises on performance or memory expandability.
The One is a nice phone... but it's smaller screen and taller body (the cost of the speakers) isn't the only choice to be made.
On a usage basis, I do often listen to music on the ZL... in the car over bluetooth (google play music has replaced XM Radio) and on the train/plane/gym over (non-oem) headphones. The only time I listen to the speaker is when my phone is having problems with bluetooth connections to my car and I want to talk and drive.
In my list of things for sony to put on a late 2013/2014 ZL, I'd place upgraded processor first, bigger battery second, better viewing angle/lower battery hog screen 3rd, keeping microSD 4th, better camera/top placement on front camera 5th, slimmer design 6th, changed placement of microusb port 7th.

Well, the Beats headphones, anyway. Only thing I care about with those is that I can disable Beats and get a nice flat equalizer so I can use the phone with my quality Sennheiser cans, rather than overhyped Beats nonsense.
If you bothered to read other friends, you'd have realised that it was just an equaliser setting, and you can swap between "Normal" "Bass" "Rock" etc, as well as the 'optimised' "Beats" setting.

I presume you're talking to me. I *have* bothered to read, but I don't know for sure if "Normal" is the same thing as a flat equalizer. I've never had an HTC phone before; for all I know "Normal" isn't the same as "Flat" in HTC-speke.

That is the biggest thing there.
so apparently the One X doesn't even come with Beats headphones unless you get the deluxe edition which comes with Solo's.........wtf?
It comes with just some standard headset that "uses" the beats flat-no tangle cord
And yea, the Camera is absolutely ridiculous for a cell phone, but thats why I have a DSLR for...to take nice pictures, most smartphones suffice for point and shoots

Conflicting reports in UK .If it's a contract phone it looks like you get UBeats if its sim free you get bog standard ..only time will tell
So people who want a stylish, quad core phone with an awesome screen should tun their nose up at the One X because HTC isn't marketing those features quite as hard?
quad-core is more of a gimmick IMO, good thing about it is mainly the tegra zone support....but in general Krait with two cores > four Cortex-A9 cores by a huge margin. It's a generational gap basically.......
When they start pumping out quad-core A-15 or something, then we're talking. But as of now, Krait has a huge performance leap. How much that translates into real-world usage is to be seen. It wins though....it wins. You probably won't actually "fell/notice" it though....maybe a bit snappier in everything? though almost everything is already fast as heck. Apps and things need to start utilizing these speed increases
I also have a pair of noise-cancelling bluetooth stereo headphones so couldn't give a s**t about urbeats or nobeats!
The camera is a nice plus but I'm not too fussed about it because I recognise that this is a phone first and everything else second so the camera is unlikely to be perfect for all occasions.

Sony Smart headset rocks in ONE X!

I have a pair of Sony SmartHeadset for my Xperia S, I have tested on my HTC ONE, and to my surprise they work great, the volume controls change the tracks and the play button / answer works as well, but best of all is the sound , you can not describe how good it sounds, the best inear headphones I've tasted in the htc one X,the bass is really deep and strong and very high volume with no distorsion, for my taste sound much better than Beats inear! highly recommended!....but remember that there are two differets models Sony SmartHeadset for Sony models and Sonyericsson LiveView, the last doesn´t work!!!
How much do they cost and do you know any website which sells them online with world wide shipping?
And do you know the exact model number just to be sure that i get the normal one.I do have live ware manager installed on my one x so does that not make the latter headset work on my phone?
I would love to have em on my one x!
Hey Where did you get this??I need a one too. very badly!

They seem pretty legit to me!.And most of all these oem headsets can be bought for a cheap price through some retailers than through the company itself
have you bought yours there or somewhere else ?
I've asked them if they could provide me the white ones and answer is it's possible but for nearly 80$ !!! That's why I find it weird...
In france I can't find it under 70$ so it's consistent with their white ones price, but very different from the black ones.
Have you seen the HBH-IS800 from Sony?
It's a bit expensive I know, but wireless and very small.
That's on my wishlist.
got these today and i must say that they are pretty impressive. I showed em to one of my friends who's a DJ and he said that these are really nice considering the price. The bass is very well balanced and not overwhelming. As said above the controls work fine. These however, they keep falling from my ears... Maybe because im not used to in ear headphones... But music sounds as it should on these headphones. Definitely worth the moolah...

In regards to them always falling out, you're obviously exactly the same as me how your ear is, and I assure you it will not get better, unless you grow your ears...
Happens to me with beats, and its because the lip in our ear cannel is not wide enough to hold the headphone in ear as intended.
Thats presuming its the same issue as me.

.. you guys should try jvc xtreme xplosives.. they are discounted on amazon .. and boy they sound good.. excelent bass. :good::good::good:
Got one of this headset for myself and it's worth the money.
Can you the "+" for next/forward, "-" for previous/rewind and the "middle" button for play/pause/adjusting volume. Save me the trouble to turn on the screen just to play next/previous song.
i've had these headsets (bought them because of this topic to replace my deceased Sennheiser CX880's T.T).
and ehr... yea replaced them.
compared to normal headset's they are okay... at best.
the sennheisers i had mop the floor with these, but they are about 2/3x as expensive.
currently i am using Sony MDR-XB30EX 's. (the sony webshop had a bug in Holland and they cost 5 bucks instead of 40 so pretty much impulse bought them)
they still aren't as good as the sennheisers but they sound a lot better then these (and are at about the same price)
also a problem i had with these is that i could not keep them in my ears, the slightest movement would cause them to jump out.
the sennheisers and the sony MDR-XB30EX's on the other hand i can put in my ears and then hang the phone on the cord and they'll stay in.

High end earphones for Z/ZL

I´m thinking about upgrading my Senheiser CX300-II since i cannot find the proper sound when plugin them to my ZL, sad as it is the ZL sounds worst than the Xperia ARC due to different DAC they use (Qualcomm).
It´s quite an annoying issue for me, i even thought about moving to another brand or downgrading to my old ARC pal.
Wanna give the ZL a proper chance, i have a modest set of speakers, Altec Lansing, and they produce a real good sound out of the ZL, so something can be done.
I´m looking into better earphones, in the range of 80-120 €, however i have a friend telling me, begging me, to buy the Shure SE425 set, worth 200€, he says i wil discover a new life in terms of sound quality.
If they are that good i might think about it, they are a bit expensive but...
So guys, what do you have to say about this?. can u recommend a gud but not very expensive set of earphones?, don´t need them to have mic or control volume by the way.
I use Klipsch Image X10i with mine, and I swear by it - most balanced & crisp in-ear I ever used (and I tried quite a few, etymotic, UE, etc). I believe its most wide range single-driver headset (I can't really stand multi-driver ones, since they hide fine detail in sound).
It also perfectly works as a headset (with only obvious exclusion of dedicated volume buttons).
I tried it out with a few cans: the Sony MDR-XB600 (for electronic and bassier music) and the Audio Technica ATH-AD900 (for everything else--especially awesome with cellos and violins). Sometimes I go with an amp (Fiio E06 and Fiio E07K) to bring more bass to the ADs.
I think they all sound really good. You just have to be sure that you feed it appropriately. A bad source will never sound good.

Knowing the facts, i mean the DAC...
Do you consider the ZL a good source?
Can a gud seat of earphones get a really nice sound out of it?
Tapatalk+Xperia ZL
Sorry--when I said "source" I was talking about the files. If you stream YouTube all day and play at the low quality levels, it'll reflect in the sound. However, if you play higher quality streams or uncompressed music files--the ZL can deliver a fairly full and rich sound. Granted, it's no Wolfson, but the Qualcomm chip they use is still better than the crappy Qualcomm one coming out of the Samsung Galaxy SII set.
Depending on the application you use, you can play with the EQ (I know the Music app, which I use, has an EQ) so you can flatten the sound, or add highs or lows.
I use poweramp player and sound is pretty good even with the headphones provided.. I thought Walkman was good but then I tried poweramp and it did improved the hell out... Besides a good setting on equalizer does the difference for sure... I use poweramp with headphones and Walkman for speaker...

I think worth every penny.
I got them for trial, I would've returned them if they were even a bit unsatisfactory, but sound quality totally blew me away, they were as awesome in detail resolution as single-driver Etymotics, but with tons more bass. You need to choose a proper eartips to get a good seal though, this very important with IEMs as such.

Have tried it's of ear phones and found this gem, budget, but a good upgrade from stock earphones. Very balance sound.

It´s always difficult to describe sound.
The ZL sounds kind of dirty, distorted when the volume is up, didn´t find the right EQ balance yet, i remember Xperia ARC, with same earphones i use for ZL, was very easy in the sense, clean sound, heavy, clear bass, superior sound quality definitely, perhaps the best sounding smartphone i can recall (used Galaxy Note, Galaxy 3, Galaxy Mini, Xperia ARC, Iphone4 and now ZL).
Galaxy 2 was perhaps the worst sounding Galaxy S smartphone, they used a pretty raw Yamaha DAC, now they are back to Wolfson.
I love the ZL but i´m finding pretty difficult to get a quality sound out of it, that´s why i´m thinking about buying these kind of quality earphones.

Sorry, I don't know what you mean by "dirty", and I hear no distortion and it plays music well.
I don't use EQ because I want to hear music how it was intended, and that's why I bought expensive IEMs, because they are very flat & balanced. They really bring up any imperfection in sound output, but I have no big problems with my ZL.
Btw on SGS2 any kind of postprocessing significantly lowered SNR and made noise significantly more audible, don't know why.

Yes, the S4s. On X ZL for me. Truly enjoying the sound they provide !
Try looking for a Sony MH1C. It does sound like a $200 IEM for its $50 price and it comes with all the controls and Smartkey. You must think twice before getting a Shure since you're coming off a CX300-II which is a lot different.

Try looking for a Sony MH1C. It does sound like a $200 IEM for its $50 price and it comes with all the controls and Smartkey. You must think twice before getting a Shure since you're coming off a CX300-II which is a lot different.

What is the main difference between the Shure and the CX300-II?, i heard the Shure produce a clear sound, with less bass than the CX300-II.
How will u compare the MH1C with the CX300-II?

Speaker hype

So I have heard lots of great things about the speakers on this phone and I'm trying to decide if it's a lot of hype or if I got a phone with bad speakers. I have had the phone for 10 days now and while the clarity is good I'm not impressed with how loud the speakers are. Example is 4 of us were standing around a table watching you tube video yesterday and I wanted some more volume but it was all the way up. We could all hear ok but it wasn't overly loud. Another example is I turned on music player and cranked it all the way up and took a shower, phone was about 3 feet from the shower and I could barely hear the music. So I'm looking for your opinion did I get sub par speakers or am I expecting to much from these speakers?

do you have another phone to compare it to so we can get an idea of comparable volume?

I have not had a chance to compare it to another HTC one,but I just compared it to my old droid incredible 2 and the incredible 2 is every bit as loud if not louder. The one sounds a little better but like I said it is no louder than the old incredible 2. Hoping someone that used to have a incredible 2 can let me know what they think also.

I just compared my old dinc2 with my One, playing the same songs on each phone separately and at the same time, and the One was a little louder than the dinc2. Not by much, but definitely louder. However, the audio quality of the One is much, much better. Though I will happily listen to audio on my One while working, I never did that with the dinc2 given its speaker audio quality. As far as max volume is concerned, mine is plenty loud and I don't need it to be any louder.
Maybe stop by a Verizon store and compare the volume of yours with the display phone.
Mine isn't that much louder than my wife's iPhone either.

I play music on my One while in the shower and I hear it very well, and I don't even have the volume all the way up!

I stopped by Verizon today and did just that. I loaded a pearl jam song on both phones on youtube and they sounded the same. But I do agree with you that the sound quality on the one is far superior to the incredible 2, I just wish it was a little louder.

And this is the kind of thing I had heard about the phones speakers before I got it to lead me to believe that the speakers are even better than they are. You must have some better acoustics in your shower than I do. Over all I am happy with the speakers so I wont complain to much.
I've basically found that while this phone isn't all that much louder than other devices I've had. I came from the S4 and that was pretty loud.
However, the One has infinitely better clarity when it comes to the audio. I'll take that. Now if by some crazy magic they can figure out bass, but given the space available I'm sure that will never happen.
I have and have had a lot of android devices. Some of which (Galaxy Nexus) the speaker volume was so low that is required many tweaks via the kernel and third party apps to make it even reasonable. I agree with you that there is a lot of hype in the "boom sound" of the HTC One. Personally, I don't find the volume to be extremely loud but I do find the quality of the sound to be better than any of my other devices. The thin devices we all love jam so much into their size that the speakers often suffer. If you prefer loudness over the quality of the sound there are third party apps you could try. For me the sound is plenty loud and sounds great.
Loudest phone i've ever had. Some things don't seem like they're are that much louder, if noticeable than other phones, but obviously you have the clarity. Youtube may not be the best test as the audio isn't always the greatest. One thing i can note is when volume is maxxed, the notifications are ridiculously loud.
Seems pretty loud to me. I use it to listen to music while I shower and the fan is on. Still hear it fine. I'll be damned if another phone could match that performance.
Seems to be hit and miss with people. I think some had unrealistic expectations. Honestly for me they are perfect. You have to realize in any noisy environment nothing will hold up short of a real larger speaker. These things are outstanding when compared to any other phone.
With beats enabled the volume seems a bit quieter but the quality is much better out of the speakers. If you need a little louder try turning off beats.
?
So which phone would everyone say is the loudest?
If I remember my specs correctly, since there are two speakers, the One can do stereo audio.
My droid DNA was louder than the One but you had to have the phone on a flat surface as a reflector.

Rate your HTC 10 speakers

Hey XDAers!
I'm considering buying the HTC 10 after my amazing experience with the One M7.
Just wondering how the built-in speakers on the 10 match up to other flagships and previous HTCs. I heard the M9's speakers were really loud and better than the M8's, which were in turn louder and better than the M7's. My current feelings on the 10, from reading reviews, is that they're great quality but not that loud, and not great for watching videos in landscape mode.
Whoever's had old Ones and/or recent flagships and can comment on the loudness and quality of the 10's built-in speakers, please share your thoughts! I'd love to be able to start playing good quality, loud music while cooking, showering, or at gatherings with friends.
Edit: Mods; maybe this should be in Guides, News, and Discussion instead?
While I do think the speakers sound good, they are not loud enough, they are around same level as my s7 edge but lower than my G5.
I has the M7, M8 and now the 10. I think they're just fine. Great sounding, loud enough. Is it the loudest? No. But will you get damn good quality from these speakers given the right media? You bet you will.
Agreed they're not loud, the quality is very good though

Awesome speakers and are clearer than my M8. HTC focused more on clarity it appears.
In terms of loudness? Someone had tools to test and made a video showing the 10 having slightly louder speakers.
I guess many think the opposite because of how big htc made their speakers look on their M series but if you were to open them, the speakers are actually less than half of the actual grill.

Thanks for the responses guys!

Oh what, actually? Do you happen to have the video? Cause if this is true, that makes me very happy
I have to say I used my M9 everyday at work on lunch to watch TV shows. Yesterday was the first day using the 10 and it is just as loud and sounds so much better. The clearly is crazy with the 10. I am so happy with it.

Quality is very good, but what is missing is the real stereo sound from M7-M9. M10 still sounds good, better than S7. Its just not the same than before, especially if your watching a video in landscape, where stereo really mattered.
But still, its miles better than G5 and S7, cause the sound is coming right at you, not from the bottom in the direction of your hand (like S7).
In the shower, I could clearly hear music from my 6P playing. With the 10, that is no longer the case - sounds like any past phone in terms of volume. It is definitely a little higher quality than any other phone I've had though, but not bounds and leagues ahead to make it a worthwhile sacrifice for volume. So if loudness is what you're after, you will be disappointed.
Thanks guys; it's incredibly useful having a wide variety of opinions.

This disappoints me. The 6P looks great but is too big for me and stock Android is not as customisable as I'd like; otherwise I probably would've already bought it.
Maybe there's a way to increase loudness without losing too much clarity/quality? I've heard V4A can increase volume by up to 50%.
The sound quality is good, but it is not louder that HTC M8, when you hear music you can hear in both speakers, same if you are choosing a ringtone, but when you hear the phone ringing IS VERY BAD, it sounds muffled and low because the ring only sound in the lower speaker
Does somebody try to root and place viper4Afor fix this?
I have the same issue when the phone is ringing. It just doesn't sound right.
I wrote to HTC customer online ( chat) they told me that it could be a bug, may should be included in the future updates. You can to write to chat or HTC technical support so they could see several people with the same thing and fix it a little bit more quick. If somebody can help us---- welcome
So my phone isn't faulty. I thought my phone has some kind of issue for what it sounds to tiny in landscape position. My last G4 with back speaker sounded so loud and definitely not bad than Htc 10. Somebody should find some way to louden the output.
