Qi Wireless Charging Pads w/ Extended batteries - Galaxy S III Accessories

Hey everyone,
I am really keen on having Qi charging and already have the pad and everything. I am looking to make the move to an extended battery (not the official one, which I hear works with the pads, but rather an ebay one, 4300mah, 4500mah etc with extended battery doors).
I know this will cause the contacts to be elevated above the spots requiring contact with the pad.
How are people overcoming this? I'd rather not solder to visible contacts inside the phone, and was curious how others have accomplished this and kept a consistent connection without permanently affixing it with solder?

Would like to see some pictures of this was thinking about doing it myself but wasn't sure if it would work, also would like to know which sort of copper tape they use..

Look for palm pre mod . It was the wireless charging mod before qi chargers were made for the s3.

the copper tape or copper wire trick will do.
there is a thread here where someone took a qi receiver pad and modified it to fit several extended batteries.. search this specific forum. it's there.

I am also interested in charging the extended battery using the Qi Wireless receiver for my S3.
I purchased the recommended copper tape but had no success.
Are there steps somewhere in the forums that could show you the steps?
I do not want to solder anything to the contacts.

Hi this post is a bit old, but I think very relevant today. Most tags will not work with an extended battery because of where the chip is located. I'm finding that it needs to be lower and the only ones that do that are the ones with a longer contact neck. I just purchased a 6400 ma battery and back cover for my s4... and discovered my qi I receiver tag will not work... unless I fool around with it a lot like putting a bunch of tape underneath that neck part to raise it on the short version. But with all that little bit of extra tape makes the back cover insufficiently loose because it can't snap-in because it's too thick of a battery. But I played around with a little bit as I told you above and got it to work but I couldn't keep the back cover on. So my in-enept modification failed... I read a review on Amazon or a gentleman got it to work but I notice his cute a receiver tag had the longer neck. I know the company tylt makes one, & I am calling him in the morning just to verify that is the one actally still selling.

Extended Battery + Qi Pad, Back Plate Doesn't Fit
I'm having a similar problem with my Galaxy S3 extended battery + Qi charging pad. I was able to modify the Qi charging pad to fit above the extended battery pretty easily, even though the end result is a bit kludgy. Basically I just soldered two thin wires to the contact points on the charging pad then used a piece of foam to space the wires appropriately. I wrapped this in electrical tape and tinned the ends so they'd make a solid connection to the phone contact points.

This worked great, except that the extended back casing that came with the battery doesn't fit properly when the Qi charging pad is inserted. The back plate that came with the battery is made of hard plastic so it won't bend leaving me with an extended battery + Qi charging but no back case. All the back plates I've seen on eBay look identical to the one I was sent. I'm going to try heating and molding the back, or perhaps sanding it down (though it's already pretty thin) but at this point I'm not super confident.

Why isn't there an inductive case that charges the phone through the pogo pins? I know that the is a mod to do this yourself, but why isn't a professional one available?

Sounds like a great idea but it might be hard to design a case that keeps constant contact with the pogo pins without damaging them when pressure is applied to the case. Would probably have to use some spring pogo pins which would result in a pretty bulky case (on that side at least)

Actually, if it were a case, it would fit snugly enough that you wouldn't need spring loaded contacts. Any sort of metallic contact would do, however thin. I like this idea.

Without proper signalling, the pogo pins will only charge at USB rates. meaning restricted to 500mA. The phone comes with a 1 amp charger for a reason. We are just now decoding the signalling here in the forums, an IC and Voltage regulator are needed. This would make for a pretty thick case.
NFC tags:
I'm not 100% sure on this, but would think that the charging coil will block the NFC from working properly.

Charging: You would need to use a modified kernel like Franco's - not an easy sell for a company looking to mass-produce these cases.
NFC: When I did my case mod I slid the coil up a bit so about half of the battery was not blocked. The NFC works fine. NFC will NOT work while charging b/c of electrical interference, so do not put an NFC tag on your charger base.
Also, those pins are small which makes it tricky to make & keep contact with the case. I ultimately popped the back & ran 2 stripes of copper tape to the outside of the phone, covering the pins. This gave me a pair of 1/4" x 3/4" contact points. The copper tape in the case makes solid contact & life is great. The tape pieces are hidden by the case.

Unfortunately I do not use cases as I just use a clear shield so I have no idea if it works with otterbox or any case.
This mod will not work with any pad. It will only work with the Palm Touchstone. I dont recco any pad as I only recco the touchstone. I like having one in my car, at the office and one on the nightstand.

Can you try just putting something a few mm's thick between the phone and the charge pad and seeing if it still charges?
i got this mod with a 3mm thin case from ebay. they work perfectly.

It works with a few mm but not sure how that affects charging. Please dont just take my word for it. Dont want you spending 30 on a back cover you cant use. But if it doesnt work i will buy it from ypu for a major discount. Lol

Frequencies have anything to do with it. I'm pretty sure inductive charging uses magnetic fields to charge your device hence the giant coil in the phone cover. BUT, each base is most likely specific to it's counter part coil as different size coils will charge at different rates from the magenet in the base vs the amount of voltage and amps they put through the magnet. So it would make sense if a say Powermat didn't work with a Touchstone coil.
On the other hand, the touchstone uses a standard phone charger so it has a maximum of 5V at 1amp. I do not know what power source the Duracell Powermat uses (looked a little but didn't search long) so if it were to use a higher voltage at the same amps or higher amps at the same voltage then it may charger your phone faster.
NOTE: It should also be noted that if you use a different charging source with the touchstone base you could end up generating a different level of voltage and in turn damage your phone. It's not recommended to do this. The downfall (that I have found) with the touchstone setup is that it WILL charge through thin TPU cases and my Rock Quicksand case BUT the magnet is not strong enough to hold the phone in place. Since the touchstone is angled and not flat the phone starts to slide down and charging stops.
You can always switch out the magnets so your phone sits better on the touchstone. Its easy to change and it can make a nice diference.

If only there is a standard that can adapt or provide compatibility with other methods... but that would probably drive up costs and probably extend r&d time.

[Q] Wireless Charging Mod Question

I have been reading some very interesting posts about adding wireless charging capabilities to a Samsung Galaxy Nexus. Although it seems like every mod requires a touchstone coil, which also requires a larger back cover. Browsing ebay I ran across a "patch" of sorts that goes between the case and the battery to add the inductive charging. I was wondering before I buy it and rip apart my beloved phone. Could I just solder the "patch" to the pogo pins on the side of the phone and would it charge? Or am I missing a component? Thanks in advance for any help!

That's what mods are all about, people have successfully mod the palm touchstone coil into their phone and it works flawlessly.
In theory this would work, but how OP are going to connect it to the pogo pins, that's another problem.

Well I was thinking that if you take the phone apart there is a spot where the pogo plugs connect to the circuit board. I thought I could just solder a thin gage wire to the leads, but does that patch have the correct circuits to supply 5v with the right amount of amps?

Check the specs of the induction charger.
Anyway for the touchstone mod, others used a copper tape instead of a wire.

I have a s3 a couple of the s3 qi cards. I have my gnex as a backup and did the mod myself. If you peal the top label off the card around the pins you'll be able to desolder the s3 connector and solder a couple wires. I used a couple fine wires I removed from a old ide cable. I then used a dremel tool to cut a small rectangle under the battery door and behind the pogo pins to connect the wires. I used a very small cut off wheel, took my time, and cut shallow and never took the phone apart. The pins are easy to solder to and much safer. This did disable my pogo pins, but I have no dock so I don't care. I have the Samsung OEM 2000mah extended battery and back cover. This leaves me a small gap to lay my wires without any battery door bulge. My ditztronic case still fits perfect and the wireless charging works great. Its worth noting that the qi pad will provide around 600ma, which is fine since the dock pins charge in USB mode anyway.
BTW, while I think the safest and easiest way to get to the phone's circuitry is to cut that small hole, you are putting a dremel to your phone so I am in no way responsible if you somehow kill your phone.

Qi wireless charger

Hi,
I recently bought a qi wireless charger because my charger port of the phone broke and it's too expensive to fix.
Anyways, yesterday I left it for 2 hours the % went from 49 to 90 which I was quite happy with but I let it charge over night and it only went from 34% to 50%.
I am rooted and on AOSP.
I check the wireless current and sometimes as soon as I put it on the pad it's 1000ma but then it keeps dropping quick to 100ma. The pad as an output of 1000ma.
Csn someone tell me how to fix the slow charge. Thanks

you're probalby not lining it up properly. that happens when you've misaligned the pad to the charger. find the sweet spot and just remember to place your phone there the same way.
if you're handy,you can probably also come up with a cradle of some sort so the phone falls right in place everytime.

I placed mini rare earth magnets under the phone's back plate, just 2 on the top area, and then 2 on the Qi wireless charger so the phone aligns perfectly with the charger, and gets the best charge it can get.. Also I opened up all my Qi Chargers and used my Dremel to remove all the extra plastic, as much as I could to remove any kind of resistance or space between the Tx Coil and the Rx Coil.. I tested the best place they could be aligned with a Multi Meter, and then added magnets.. Works like a charm.. Its a pain in the ass, but mine works out pretty well. I didn't place the magnets on the inside, I placed them on the outside of the charger.. Works well

although i wonder if putting magnets that strong in your phone will mess with your gps and magnetometer.
i would say a small plastic cradle or creating little edges on the transmitter so the phone just physically falls in would be an easier and safer alternative that using a dremel on your receiver.

I would of thought the same thing, but it has given me zero problems when the magnets are set up top.. HOWEVER, when I tried to place 2 near the bottom, it caused all kinds of problems with USB charging and my phone locked up a few times... I'm glad the damage wasn't permanent.. I used my Hotglue gun to hold them into place, the magnetic field caused a short in the Gluegun and it EXPLODED in my hand.. I was lucky enough to drop it right when I heard the sizzle and BANG.. So when playing with strong magnets.. Be careful.
Edit: I also have an external case with the same type magnets, and even with the case on, it doesn't give me any issues, at least any I'm aware of.. I made a magnetic mount on my desktop pc, just for kicks.. But since the case is metal, I can't put a Qi charging coil on it.. Now that would be neat..
yeah.. that's dangerous in general. I honestly would not recommend anyone to do what you did considering you almost ended up with stuff blowing up un your hands.

The zerolemon battery covers the standard pinouts to the QI wireless receiver for wireless charging. Does anyone have a solution, workaround, modification or source for a QI receiver that would work? It is so convenient just to put a phone on a stand and top it off, even with the massive 10,000 mah battery. I am NOT interested in anything that involves soldering anything to my precious phone, or modifying the phone in any way, just the receiver. Thank you in advance for any thoughts!

Maybe one of these cheap charging pads can be modified instead of your phone? They dont seem to have one specifically for the note 4 yet on here, but for $6 thats a pricetag you dont have to cringse about when you srtart soldering on it..

Basically you have to extend the contacts from the phone back. You don't need to solder. You can do it with double stick foam tape, masking tape, adhesive copper braid or sheeting and the adapter. My adapter has not arrived yet so I am not sure it will fit between the Zerolemon battery and the case back. I did something similar to get NFC working with my Zerolemon on my Note 2. Once my adapter gets here I will report if I am successful and the fix is safe and dependable.

I have 3 pads that fit the original note 4 and work with it, I'm open to any suggestions on how to extend the flexible flat cable -- I can't find a way to do in online anywhere!

Instead of modifying things just use this simple device available on Amazon. Make sure the output matches the requirements of your device before you purchase or it will not work. This is the one I purchased for use with my LG G3 and the ZeroLemon case with the extended battery and it works just fine. You still do not get the NFC capability, but the wireless charging works. But then who actually uses the NFC anyway?
Just search on amazon for micro USB Qi antenna or wireless charging antenna. (the forum won't let me post the link)
This adapter is very easy to install and adds the Wireless Charging / Qi charging back to your phone. Amazon has several versions, just make sure you get the one that has the correct configuration on the plug, either small side up or small side down, and you also need to make sure you get the one with the correct output. Actually, that is not true. I have installed the exact item I was talking about, and it works perfectly fine. The cover over the port does not fit "air tight" over the port and has plenty of room for the adapter to fit between the cover and the phone. This is why I had suggested the item in the post.

The Note 4 Qi contacts are in 2 places. The upper one, just to the side of the camera, is not covered by the Zerolemon Battery, and does not pose a problem for connecting, but the one next to the battery IS completely covered by the battery itself. Maybe I'm missing something? I don't care about NFC, but would really like the Qi charging feature. If you know of an item that would work, please PM me a link. Thanks!

Not for a Note 4, different contacts (won't work).
I really thought I was in the G3 forum...sorry about that.
They make a qi receiver now that plugs in the charger port of the phone and then flips back to the battery door it's on amazon like 15 bucks. Place case over it to protect receiver and phone any your good to go. I'm sure this will work just fine for ya there a universal qi receiver for tablets and phones with no battery door.
