4.3 removed GTalk, can't uninstall Hangouts. How do I get it back? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Hey,
I wouldn't have upgraded to 4.3 if I knew it was going to replace GTalk with this hangouts garbage. How can I get it back? This this is useless and I can't even see who is online. Most garbage product to come out of Google in recent memory.

You can't. Hangouts replaces Talk. Google retired Talk.
It is not really garbage though. It is very similar to Talk and has a couple more functions (groups, photos) if you use Google+ as well.

Agreed, it's garbage. Will not upgrade until it's removed. Can't set status, can't sort by availability. Utter fail.

Agreed, Hangouts is total crap, i want to remove it as well.

If you're rooted you can uninstall Hangouts with Titanium Backup then install a GTalk apk you can get it by searching or push it into system /app

Is there a ROM for GNex that fixes Facebook sync?

I'm not too picky on my ROMs, I just really need my Facebook sync back.
I tried the replace contacts.apk method and failed miserably. I'd much rather just flash a ROM that has it already fixed.
Thanks Care,

Bought it
It said it sync'd. I went into my phone contacts, nothing. I went into accounts to make sure it was enabled and it was and it said it had sync'd.
Rebooted, still nothing.

Thanks for the help so far, installed it and its a no go for verizon voice mail so far
Maybe start using Google voice if you don't find a fix soon. It will notify you by email and visual voice mail at the same time. It also doesn't use carrier notification for voice mail so you should be getting new voice mails almost instantly.
I don't know if page plus or verizon integrates with Google voice like sprint does

Scratch that it half worked, its in my apps and i can go in it and tells me the up to date notifications however when i receive a email it doesnt notify me still, i have to manually check the app. any way around this?
I did some searching around Google for information on getting page plus VM working and most answers i saw people used a app for VM. I seen someone say the reason for your problem isnt the phone, its the number.

New Google Hangouts app and GS4

I can't get the new hangouts app installed in my galaxy s4. It says it is already installed, but when I press open, it opens the old talk app. Any thoughts?
We need the new Google play services for it to work.

If u already have google music installed on your phone just go to play market and update the app. The new hangout apk is above with all the other apks if needed!!
I had to install hangouts from my pc

The new hangout sucks!!! Big time!
I need to know the online status of my friend before I send them a message, I do not want to message ppl while they are in the middle of something.
Also, after install Hangout, Google Play Services seem to be a HUGE battery drain!!!

There is a green under their photo that tells you they are online. Also their photos are bolder than people who are offline.

No, there isn't. Not in the Android app at least. The green underline is visible only in the browser version.

Hey
As someone else mentioned, which is the method i used as well, use your Desktop and go to the google play store, find hangouts and it will let you install, choose your S4 from the devices list, and bam, force-update over Gtalk. You're welcome.
P.S. I suggest you install from the Play Store. Also, notifications work entirely fine for me.
Does anybody know how to delete pictures stored on the gallery from when u send a pic in hangouts it automatically saves them, kinda of annoying. Thanks

The method I used is if you're rooted just uninstall Google Talk w/ Titanium Backup, go into the Play Store and download/install Hangouts.
Just an alternative method from what's been stated.

Wouldn't it auto update anyway? Why you hate hangouts? Its pretty much everything talk was plus tons more...
Sent from my HTC6500LVW using xda app-developers app
I was able to find the Talk Apk. Auto-update is easily preventable by setting it not to do so.
Talk is far, far more visually appealing and navigable. When chatting with someone, I find it impossible to side swipe to the user list screen for some reason. Hangouts is just another example of trying to "fix" something that wasn't broken. What is the "tons" more you refer to? It still hasn't merged SMS, which would actually have been useful.
I bet you like the new Maps too and the loss of layer functionality?

Perhaps to you. I do like the new maps it seems to lock quicker. No need for the attitude... I find the navigation much easier with the swiping and I love the look of the application. Its far easier to add people from your contacts as well as the different levels of navigation within the application. Love how easy it is overall versus talk. The new maps application lost a feature I don't use... Not saying its alright for all but your attitude sucks...

Titanium backup says it's version 4.2.2-612687 (330)
just uninstall hangouts, and it should revert to talk. that's been my experience.
hangouts sucks. i still can't easily see who's online and who isn't, that's a huge PITA.

With the new update you should be able to see who is online. I know I can.

I just checked and I still think they need to improve on that. I'd like it if they showed the online status in the opened hangouts window instead of just the new hangouts window.
If they did that then it's worth switching to, but as it stands, talk is still superior in online chat in my opinion.

Yep, that's what I did on my N7 (2013). However, I backed it up first just in case and THEN delete it.
One thing I hate about Hangout is that BY DEFAULT, ALL conversation are recorded. I can disable this, but only per conversation instead of the default option. So I have to disable this for EVERY single chat windows, both old and new ones.
Hangouts irritated the hell out of me as well. After using Talk for a couple of years, the update to Hangouts drove me straight to WhatsApp.
Sent from my HTC6500LVW using xda app-developers app
Does talk work on 4.4?
Sent from my HTC6500LVW using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Hangout is a bit quirky, as I've yet to figure out how to send an SMS directly through the app, but it's much more feature packed than Talk I think.
Can someone point me in the right direction? I basically have to go into my Contacts and just choose to send a message. There's got to be a way to do it through Hangout itself though, right?

Yes these apps all work and they are awesome . There is already a thread here with this stuff in it though gmail 5.0 is the title. I guess we can have 2 threads LOL
Don't like the wasted space. Samsungs is much nicer plus the swipe and motion functions. The archive option is great though.
How do you feel about the random colors assigned to each thread? Lol nice touch, but it would be nice to assign a color to a contact. We shall see!
