The Note 3 is rumored to have 3GB of RAM. I believe that is a first for smartphones. But does it actually mean anything for real world performance or is it just for the spec sheet. Are there any use cases where 2GB is not sufficient?

You know, since we do not have any phone with 3GB we really don't know that?
But we can speculate, and 2GB did bring marked difference to the table with more apps that can stay suspended in memory so we can easily come back to them @ later time. Basically, there will be no other bonus beside better multitasking, unless someone figures a way to run 2 systems @ once (for whatever reason that may be) or we get into very advanced gaming (that GPU performance would not allow anyway) with huge framebuffers and AA. To date, I have not found any case where 2GB was not enough, no single app that would eat more than 1GB of ram - supposedly you can write an app that would use all available memory as storage for levels and textures and whatever just to increase smoothness of gameplay, but that would not make it a requirement, only an added option, since the game must be designed to run on some lowest common platform (within reason).
So in a way it will certainly mean "something" for a smoothness, just how much depends on your uses and application developers, for now I don't think you will see any difference from more memory, because it will be dwarfed by faster CPU and GPU speeds.

well ram does make little significant in multitasking and gaming but apart from it there is no much gain as of now 2gb is enough to perform all task and it works great as of now. we rather need more ram demanding games and apps to utilize the power of it, so yes as of now its a co. specs sheet to launch a new smartphone , its future proof but to catch up with it we need a more demanding android platform,games and app.
Samsung are only doing it for the sake of the specs bump. I'm probably going to wait for the Note 4 myself, maybe we will need more ram by then.

You never needed more than 2GB of RAM because the system is optimized to leave certain ammount of free RAM thereby closing applications designated as "unused",which might not be regarded so much unused by us after all.So in my opponion a device with 3GB of RAM will be significantly faster and smoother.
I have more than 1GB of ram free in 90% of the cases so 3GB is overkill for now.
3GB won't really make a huge difference since we already have 2GB memory on our Note2...
I have no money so I guess I'll just wait for Note 5.

Watch it will make a difference. When we get 4.3 from Sammy our beloved Note 2 will seem to get slower and laggy. With each new firmware update, the files get bigger and also the apps need more memory.
If the rumors are true then I will be the first in line for the new note 3

I had far lesser RAM on my DHD last year and I was contended even if the games load a tad slower compared to higher tier phones.
IMO The huge bump for the RAM is to accommodate a heavier version of any given UI.

I think right now 3GB of RAM is just future proofing. Nothing ever challenges the Note II's 2GB.
With that said, the more the merrier.
IMO, it will increase performance ..Personally, I need 3 Gb.. I have more than 400 app which all have at least one function I want. I multitask a lot. Moreover, I have more than 10 background running apps Eg. Gmd gesture control, Gmd s pen control, swipepad, swipapp, air control, control center,magic unlock, lmt pie control, ..... Blah blah.
So, if I start to run more other apps, I always got over 90 % of my 2 Gb and I sometimes feel my phone become sluggish though not always .. So 3 Gb will be perfect for me

Samsung might be planning for things to make use of the 3GB .. If they didn't make that much difference, it's always good to have them ^^ with hopefully the snapdragon 800 2.X GHz .. I don't know if it will be worth upgrading from note 2, we'll just wait and see.

I regularly see free RAM drop to under 200MB, though I do have quite a few apps running. I see this more as Android effectively utilising RAM than anything else.
But with RAM being so cheap, why not have more and keep more in memory? Reduce I/O delays and flash wear, reduce battery use, and with higher and higher res screens, app assets will just keep increasing in size (4.3 supports up to 600+ DPI for example).

A year ago 1Gb ram was said to be enough, now 2 Gb is enough so if we are going yo run note 3 for a year then it is going to be enough cz we all know that samsung is going to put a lot of bloat in note 3.

Yeah exactly. The specs get bumped to create the impression that your current device is sub par. Even 1gb ram would be enough if Samsung didn't keep adding more and more useless features in every new device. Things like smart pause and s health are totally unnecessary for most people.
The only reason I even run TouchWiz is that the battery life is better than aosp. If it wasn't for that then I'd be totally happy with boring old vanilla Android on my note. This is the first phone I've ever had that I can feel free to use as I please and be confident that it will easily get me through the day and even well into the next.
Yeah the Note 3 may improve on that slightly but it's still not much of a reason to upgrade. Unless it has some miracle feature which significantly changes the way I use my phone, I'll wait for the Note 4 or 5. I just can't see it though. A minor spec bump and a raft of useless bloat just aren't getting me excited.

My galaxy note always consumes not less than 650MB even though I always kill game apps but I don't want to always kill apps. So yes, 2GB is a big plus and would be necessary especially for hardcore users.

I dont understand why...I barely use up 1GB and thats just becoming a Standard. I'd think the Dec. '13 Nexus might have it. Definitely not in 2012 though.
Depends on how hard core you're muti-tasking. I can easily hit the 2GB limit if I'm multitasking like crazy (i.e. swtiching between XDA, the web, another forum app, gmail, music, youtube, twitter, google currents, all within a matter of minutes).
Android is so seamless though that I rarely recognize when an app has been closed down.
But couldn't android be more optimize instead? I mean no even Google uses that much ram for their device( and I don't think they will this year) and what's up with quad core ? You think that's necessary ? I haven't rooted my galaxy nexus cause I will go crazy flashing rooms like before but stock feels fast without lag with a duel core

That's like saying NVIDIA Tegra 3's Quad-Core will use more processing power.
It's obvious that mAh batteries are kind of outdated and there needs to be something done with battery to improve its usage.
the 2GB ram could be ondemand RAM or something of that sort. all im saying is that, hardware should not be limited due to battery usages. look at verizon, they're pumping out 4G LTE at the cost of battery life

Virtual memory is not as efficient as physical memory (its slower).... but I do agree 2gb of ram is a little overboard... maybe for tablets with native ubuntu/linux booting, but not android.

Well I surprisingly reversed my burn in.
Anyway amoled non pentile is coming in due time. Samsung couldn't yet make full rgb at such a high pixel density...yet. but it will get there soon. Just look at the time line for their previous development from amoled to plus, and extrapolate that time.
I want at least 8mp camera, 2GB RAM, 1.5GHz Quad Core, much better GPU, microSD support, higher capacity battery and a non-pentile display (I would prefer LCD2 but its Samsung)

-16gb storage is fine, but Google experience phones are also granted 20gb on Google Drive.
-Nexus available on Play Store within 2 weeks of announcement. No carrier lock. Same $399 price.
-Super Amoled+ HD
-better GPU
-Wireless charging or at least car and desk docks with functional 3-pin at launch
-Dual core, or quad core with Ubuntu for Android
-Application settings and data auto backed up
and restored using Google Drive (especially game data)

Everything is just about perfect. I would love to see higher premium build material and larger battery. Dual core SoC and Pentile screen I can live with.
micro sd slot, better gpu, better camera, tegra 3 or better, better battery, and most importantly, please google find a company that has better build quality than samsung like motorola or htc (and if possible waterproff)

Still don't understand the need for 2gb of ram on a phone. There is no app that utilizes that, no arm processor manly enough to thrash 2gb of ram and it's just a battery suck just to have 2gb of ram. The I need my this or that instantly just doesn't justify keeping bigger ram in a phone for the battery drain and almost instantaneous output for a .5 second gain. This is one of those things where efficiency of software, hardware and better I/o from storage need to be hammered down. The whole 2gb of ram thing is just ludicrous for a handheld. Much bigger gains are to be had from discrete gpu ram and faster storage. And those cost more money and suck battery too. But while we're making corny wish lists gddr5 ram and ssd in the next phone. And octo core. Why stop at 4 even though there is no use for it? And just to blow it out I don't want a battery on my next phone. Just terminal leads for a 12volt I can carry in a back pack. That way it solves the whole non/removeable battery thing in one fell swoop, the phone will be lighter and and can accommodate all our ludicrous technology wants. Or is it needs?

Im sure this question doesnt really get thrown around alot considering the Note 2 is still a relatively new release. However, im curious to know how long before it starts to feel "outdated" just like the Galaxy S3. Im sure im not the only one who feels that way towards the S3 Int version. I mean one of the reason i switched to a Note 2 was because of the bigger screen and the extra 1GB Ram...feels like this could be future proof atleast for some time but thats also what i felt about the S3 when i first got it until they started releasing phones with 2gigs and full HD screens. What do you guys think?
When samsung releases note 3 I think.. and thats about 3rd to 4th quarter next year..

I have both note 2 and one x as well as an s3, and the hox screen is by far the best amongst the 3 in terms of crispness in my opinion.
But back on topic haha, i think it is good that technology is moving so fast. Just means better stuff for us to upgrade to in a year. The note 2 is powerful enough to withstand the changes that will occur in the next 12 months at the very least.
Try not to look at it as being in the spotlight, because regardless of what samsung or anyone else bring, the note 2 is still so unique that it can stand on it own until something else of similar size and with a stylus comes along

I see it a bit more than just a device..It should be able to work as fluidly as it was when I first had it at least for the few years ahead, and keep up with newer apps that demand more hardware resources. I like to have the greatest and the latest or at least try, but that's me

I've used the note (1) for almost a year and wouldn't have bought note 2 if it wasn't for my kid needing a new phone (my note 1). As I still feel the Note 1 is still in the game, especially when JB is released, I don't think I will feel my note 2 being outdated for atleast 2 years.

Hehe. In my case it was Mom who got my old HTC Desire. (She loves it.)
The Note 2 has just the right size for me and - compared to the Desire - more space than I'd even know what to do with, so my guess is I'll still be happy with it in 2 years. But who knows what they'll throw on the market in the near future...
When the s4 is released, my note 2 will probably become a secondary device.....depending on the actual specs released on the s4.

Until Note 2 keeps getting updates and new features I'll be more than happy to be with it.
The moment ,say Key Lime Pie(unlikely) or a later version, is not released for us, the phone will feel outdated. Cause the quad core specs should hold up for a couple of years and all that is needed are constant updates giving way to new features.

It will probably be awhile before we start seeing more cores utilized properly aside from games. There aren't that many heavy duty apps for mobiles. Even apps that take up a lot of ram don't need a lot of horse power. We need some distributed networking stuff and some real Photoshop and video/audio conversion apps to utilize the cores.

My thoughts exactly.
There are a few aspects which I consider when buying a phone, and for determining if a phone is outdated or not.
I'll give you my thoughts on when the Note II will be "outdated" - keep in mind this is relative and subject to your own opinion.
The Note II is a great device and in my opinion, it will still be great to use for the coming 2 years (which is standard contract length).
The following aspects are which I use to determine if a phone is outdated:
Battery
The Note II has a decent battery, 3100 mAh is very good for any phone. But the capacity is relative to the hardware of the phone; because of the screen size and quad-core CPU you cannot compare this 1:1 with, say, a 4 inch dual-core phone. The hardware of the Note II drains alot more battery capacity than a 4 inch dual-core phone would. Nonetheless, you can get 36-40 hours out of the battery, which still is better than most phones nowadays.
Screen
The screen of the Note II isn't it's strongest aspect. Sure, the 5.5" 1280x720 screen is nice, but what is important is the ppi (pixels per inch). The Note II has 267 ppi. In a few months there will be some phones with a 5" 1920x1080 screen, resulting in 443 ppi. This is alot better than the Note II. For now the Note II has a good screen, but it will be less attractive once the 5" 1920x1080 phones are released.
The screen won't be damaged by normal use, which is good.
CPU
An Exynos 4412 quad-core CPU at 1.6 GHz is a very good CPU. One of the best at the present moment. However, the coming Intel CPU's in Android phones will give it a run for it's money.
GPU
The Note II comes with a quad-core Mali-400MP GPU clocked at 400 MHz. This will provide the Note II with all the graphics processing power it needs and won't be surpassed soon. It's supposed to render as well as the PS3 and XBox 360. However, NVidia's Tegra 4 (not released yet) will be better.
Memory
2 GB RAM is very good, and any phone won't need more for quite a while.
Build quality
It might feel a little cheap, but it is quite strong and well-made. I am using it without a case (but with flip cover) and after about 2 months, it is still undamaged. This may vary between users but for me, it's a plus.
Development possibilities
The Note II is easy to root and there is active development going on. No downside here besides the fact that once rooted on stock ROM, you can no longer recieve OTA updates from Samsung.
Camera
The 8 MP camerica is ok. There are already better camera's in some other phones, but alot of the currently available phones have worse camera's.
Update likeliness
Samsung will surely keep the phone updated with the latest Android versions available. No worries about not being able to have the latest Android version on your phone - and if Samsung decides to stop updating, the active development community will probably provide you with a custom ROM of the latest version.
In conclusion: in the coming few months the Note II will be surpassed by other phones. However, it is a decent phone and can surely last you 2 years without losing much of it's power. So, yes, in terms of specifications, it will be outdated by the end of 2013. However, it will still be a great device and in terms of consumer satisfaction, it will not be outdated for atleast 2 years.

Im curious though, since when was dual core never enough that they had the need to increase the number of cores. Not that im complaining but isnt the main issue with experiencing some sluggishness is due to the apps running in some sort of a virtual environment( forgive me if i use the wrong terms here)? I figured why not just increase the clock speed and improve the OS to be able to fully utilize what resources are available from the hardware to its maximum potential. The way i see it...hardware wise they have taken huge leaps where as software needs alot of catching up to do...and that gap is still ever increasing.

Same goes for x86 architecture. There are a lot more apps that use it, that really benefit from it too, but some of the lesser apps that utilize use it in a faux way that doesn't really benefit from it. A lot of it is education and engineering but the other part of it is storage is still the bottleneck. Ssd's are still kind of slow unless utilized in good raid array. The current Intel core CPU's can decimate all the bits thrown at it in most mainstream systems.

I got a note 2 for myself and an S3 as a present to my mom (she didn't want the big size at all) for me the note 2 specs are top notch.
For CPU I think the exynos 4412 quad is the best second to that is probably the snap dragon s4 quad
Ram 2 gigs is pretty much the standard for smart phones now and don't think will change in quite some time.
screen is beautiful. Tbh when you look closely with note 2 and s3 side by side the s3 is better but that's because of the higher ppi
Don't forget the s pen is a huge selling point no other phone except the note 1, 2 has it. Especially with all the awesome Features of It.

So in other words unless there aren't many apps being developed that require more powerful processors and ram then there's really not that much to look forward to with the upcoming s4 performance wise other than an increase in display size, pixel density and perhaps battery life... I can't imagine how much more improvements can be done over the current performance of the note 2. This thing is literally by far the best phone experience since my last iphone device.

For me, it's the best phone i bought. I had a iphone 4s and the Zenfone 2 rocks.
Fast, great screen, 64gb plus another 64gb micro sd, i love the camera quality. The only downside is the battery size. I wish that it would last longer but right now, it's not a big issue for me.
Definitely a great phone to buy.

This is a flagship phone with a small price...
There are little problems here and there but that can be said about ALL phones... Battery is always a problem with the newer phones, the higher screen resolution really eats up battery, and the memory leak from Android 5. 0 probably doesn't help. But saying that, we have 4gb of ram that pretty much kicks arse and, when it came out, was the largest amount of ram in a phone...
I be had my 4g/64 model for 3 months and I can honestly say it is a great deal for the price. Very fast and responsive.

Easy to root and by the magic of Linux Deploy I'm running 64-bit ubuntu 15.04 alongside android. I can take notes in emacs while talking on the phone.
I do recommend upgrading to a quick-charge charger wherever you can. I'm having good success with the tronsmart chargers on amazon.

Before my phone went brick, I was not happy with its memory management. I was starting to run slow after a couple of hours of usage, and it didn't help much after killing apps. Is that the memory leak from Android you refer?
I was just using the stock ROM.

I got the 128 gig version and honestly have not been happier. Battery life is decent, camera is so so, but multi-tasking is really awesome. The UI is a bit bit cartoonish in parts, but with Nova launcher and some judicious changes in Nova/Dev settings (minor), it never lags, never stutters and is the only android phone outside the nexus family, where twitter for android scrolls properly.
It's an incredible device, for its price point. Enough said

What model?
The 551ML 4gb ram model I use has no issues with memory management and seem to power through anything but there was a few people saying their 550ML model was a little piss poor due to the 2gb they have.
If you have the 550ML then you probably aren't going to have anything improve much due to the physical limitations...
Certainly not junk! I only got the 550 (720p, 1.8 GHz processor, 2 GB RAM, no NFC and although fast-charging capable, no fast-charger). But even with this cheaper, lower-spec model, and inspite of some software niggles and could-be-better battery life, I am really enjoying this device. Love how it feels in the hand, love the big screen, love how smooth it is to use. It benchmarks on a par with last-gen flagships but I think the Intel SOC actually performs even better than those figures suggest in actual real-life use. A higher mid-range device's power for low-budget device bucks! The camera is very good, not great but way better than it should be considering the price. As I said, there are little niggles and problems and things which could be better, but they all seem very insignificant when you take into consideration the price. The cost performance ratio of this phone is pretty mind-blowing! It is also great that we have an active xda community and plenty of dev support for our device. I enjoy both the stock ASUS experience (tweaked to my satisfaction, naturally) and the CM experience - so much that I have been flitting back and forth from one to the other with regularity. Overall, not a device I'd recommend to luddite noobs who aren't prepared to put some effort in to get it set up right for them, but for anyone who actually knows a little or is prepared to learn it is a fun device and a great value proposition!

Actually, my cell phone has ressurected today. And I have the rare 551ML with 2gb ram. It has only 400mb of free RAM right after booting up. So, 1.6gb is consumed with "basic" (bloat) stuff. My phone came rooted. I'm trying to stop and uninstall some stuff, but I didn't have much luck yet.

Hello. I am debating between the Nexus 5X and 6P. I come from a Galaxy S4. I prefer the size of the Nexus 5X, and I am fine with the Snapdragon 808 and 1080p display, but the 2 GB RAM worries me. I know that 2 GB RAM will be enough for today, but will it be enough 3 years from now? Will it slow down or not be able to get Android version upgrades due to having less RAM? Is Android becoming more demanding of RAM, or less demanding? Is it worth it to get the 6P for the "future proofing"? Am I being paranoid? Thank you.
It will be OK untill next year I think. Still the more ram the merrier, as always. Today 3 gb is ok for skinned oem and I think a barebone nexus takes less ram initially than ex Samsung or LG. My Z5c has two ram and you can't open very many apps before you have to reload, and Sonys ui has less bloat than many others.

RAM on smartphones these days is a completely different beast to just a few years ago. The OS is much better at optimizing and using what is available and works in a different manner to to desktops and laptops.

The Nexus 5 is still a well loved and well used device and 2GB ram is not a problem there.
I had no hesitation about the 5X and have come across no issues yet.
I'll tell you what, my S6 edge had 3gb of RAM and the available RAM on that phone is the same as my 5X. Unused RAM is wasted RAM. But if you want to future proof your phone, find one that offers 4gb of RAM and has good development for 3rd party ROMs.
So you think you'll keep the nexus 5x for three years? Also it would get at least 2 major updates so I wouldn't be worried about ram.
One of the reasons i got a 6p and not 5x was the 2GB of ram.. And max 32GB space. My nexus 5 has 2 & 32.. I am almost out of room for files.. And my available ram is 150MB.. I think it was causing slowness i had to constantly close apps. So to answer your question YES it is an issue. I am shocked and disappointed that after 3 years they came out with a device with pretty much the same specs

The storage space is a legit concern, but unused RAM is wasted RAM. If you have 150 MB free of RAM, then 2 GB is more than plenty.
I agree.. But i was starting to experience mini crashes in camera app.. And sluggishness in general.. Closing background apps helped fixed it... So i assume 150 Ram left is not enough
I would say it's fine as long as you don't play RAM hungry games and expect to multi-task (ie. your apps are still loaded after starting the game, your game is still running if you check a couple of other apps). If you do expect to multi-task like this you'll be disappointed.
That 150-300MB free is 'wasted' if you don't have anything else to do on your phone, but if you want to open a 500+ MB game on top of that then things are going to get booted and then the game will get booted if/when you open those things again.
Also even if the phone needs to dump a few small apps when things get full most things like camera or browser or reddit app reload quickly, games can take forever to load so that when I was playing one (Uprising) I was loath to switch away from it in case it would get closed and need to load again.
