[Q] Micro USB Port - Nexus 7 (2013) Q&A

Is the size of the micro USB port the same on both versions of the Nexus 7?
Can I use any adapter that was available for the Nexus 7 (2012) for the Nexus 7 (2013)

Micro USB is a standard and is a standard size so all Micro USB chargers should work fine. The only thing to watch is actual output from the wall wart, just make sure they're the same. (they should be).

The voltage needs to be the same. The amperage needs to be equal or greater. The device will only pull as much as it can/needs. The new N7 charger is 1350ma, but you can safely use a 2000ma charger.

You'd need the slimport cable to do it, which I currently do not have, but they're mad cheap on amazon.

Never tried the charger but cable work when I bought mine, seller misplaced the cable and I had to run to Verizon store to get a cable and it was 7" tablet.

I'm wondering this too. Is it a new name for MHL through the micro USB port or something? I've been through pictures of the Nexus 4 and I don't see any other ports.
slimport
look up analogix slimport. Can't post link since I am a new member
product page
Technology behind SlipPort looks good and promising. Besides it means new type of connector, I like and welcome it.

No this is an adapter you would buy to ADD functionality that you didn't already have Not quite the same thing...
I like it.
Odd that the Google site says the Nexus 4 uses "SlimPort" technology for HDMI out while the LG Optimus G (on which the Nexus 4 is based) uses a normal USB MHL connector. Seems like an odd thing to switch?

I guess the advantage is you can still use the USB port to sync etc while hooked up to your HDTV. If the nexus 4 supports usb host (Stick mount on the GN) then maybe you could play movies off a usb drive onto your HDTV using your N4!

Unless there're two microUSB ports on the Nexus 4, I don't see how you can use that port while it is occupied by this SlimPort. The SlimPort adapter does not look like it has a secondary port on it for USB OTG as well
Only way mirroring and USB OTG can work simultaneously is via Miracast?.

That is very nice but darn it, the adapter is available only on amazon us ! nowhere else

The nexus 4 only has one slot and it works for both.

This is the first I am reading of SlimPort as well, but it has a couple advantages over MHL from what I can see
- It does not require external power. This was always a PITA with MHL cables, you had to "power" them from another USB port, usually on your TV. With SlimPort it is just a straight-through cable since it needs no extra power. Much more elegant.
- It can not only output HDMI but also DisplayPort and possibly other formats. Not a HUGE use per-se, but there are some monitors that only have DisplayPort nowadays.
All in all, SlimPort seems to be better than MHL... although I too feel a bit "Appled" by having to buy another cable..
Amazon sells the adapter, and it looks to have a microUSB port on it: amazon.com/gp/product/B009UZBLSG
Also, their informational site for SlimPort: slimportconnect.com

The Analogix PDF describing the Slimport chip in the Nexus 4 explicitly states that the USB data and Slimport Video out are mutually exclusive. One or the other, much to my dismay. It DOES support charging, as stated in plenty of documentation. It also supports display out without power. This is something that in my experience (Galaxy Note & MHL) that MHL does not allow.
so anybody got the slimport working? or USB OTG? or miracast?

OTG USB HUB Charging

So i ordered USB HUB and OTG cable and made this: http://shrani.si/f/3m/Qg/JfkMcsx/20130808144649.jpg
Everything is working fine, just the battery life is short.
So i was wondering if I can connect USB HUB with A-A USB to USB Power Adapter (http://image.made-in-china.com/2f0j00CefTLRdzJBgP/5W-USB-Power-Adapter-MEU-.jpg) and charge my Nexus 7.
Greetings.

You won't be able to charge the nexus that way - you'd need a custom kernel for that (there's one for original nexus 7).
I'm planning on doing something similar, I'm wonder if a powered USB hub would at least power your USB accessories (I'm going to plug in a DAC and Hard drive).

Not for a few months at the very earliest would be my guess.
They make a otg cable that has a power port on it to power the flash drive so it don't drain your battery. I know amazon has them.

[Q] Slimport & USB OTG dongle

Hi All,
Has anyone tested the new nexus 7 (2013) with a slim port and tried USB OTG at the same time?
I am very keen to find out if i can use a Nexus 7 as a portal Media machine to play back movies from a thumb drive on Hotel TVs when i travel without the need to move the file.
I understand I'd lose ability to charge the nexus 7 using USB OTG (OTG limitation) but I can live with that.
Thanks for any results
Tony.

AFAIK the Slimport cable needs to be directly plugged into the USB port so it can switch the Nexus 4 from standard microUSB to Slimport broadcast mode on negotiating with the hardware. If you attempted to run the Slimport adaptor through a hub or Y-cable it wouldn't work.
Thanks,
I was wondering if I could plug an OTG cable into the female on something like:
(sorry if direct product links aren't allowed)

Yeah, the microUSB port on the Slimport is for power only, the data pins aren't even wired up.
Suppose I connect Nexus 7 to a monitor through SlimPort. This monitor has USB ports built in. If I connect a keyboard or mouse to this USB port, will it work with the tablet?

No - this wont work.
As stated above the data pins on the slimport are not connected so the USB can't be used for anything other than power.
ie. Tablet can't do anything else over usb when the slimport is in use.
Bluetooth keyboard + mouse could work for you though

Thanks. My intention was to use the tablet as a PC alternative for my parents. I have dropped the idea. Now I am thinking about getting one of those Android mini PCs instead (thread here).
The issue is the limited number of pins on the Micro USB port are multi-purpose.
A Micro USB port has 5 pins, one is power and another is ground, that leaves 3 for data. These 3 "flip" (for want of a better word) between USB mode and Slimport mode, So it can only do one or the other at any time.
So the lack of data pins on the slimport pass-through port (as stated above) is not the issue. They didn't bother wiring them up because they share a couple of pins in common and so wouldn't work anyway.
[Edit]
Just to clarify a slimport Micro USB connector has 5 pins. Samsung on the other hand are now using MHL 3.0 and they are pushing on with an 11 pin connectors that open up all sorts of options such as simultaneous data connections and even multiple displays! nice!

USB-C to Micro USB Adapter question ?

Getting a 5X and was wondering if USB-C to Micro USB Adapters
are ok to use on my Car charger that is Micro USB
Getting tired of buying a new charger and cables all the time.

I bought TechMate ones. According to Benson Leung (a google employee) they meet the usb type c standard. Below is a link to all of the units he tested. The TechMate one is near the bottom.

I got a USB c otg which meats the safety measures, that I use for everything.

This way you shouldn't have to worry about it ever again

That's what I'm assuming. I used it on my old 2013 Moto X cable to flash TWRP without issue.
