Touch screen sensitivity weirdness - Nexus 7 (2013) Q&A

Brand new Nexus 7 here. I have noticed that any action requiring a touch and hold, such as moving an app or widget is often not recognized and I have to try several times. On the other hand, other things seem to be hyper sensitive, like the SwiftKey keyboard where I regularly get double presses.
Is it just me, or are other people experiencing this?

I'm having the issue too. Also when using Swype and when resting my finger on an opened browser page and all of a sudden with one finger it'll zoom in real quick. I think I might exchange tomorrow. I've been waiting to see if this is software or hardware issue. I've also had the chrome browser just lock up.

Same. Takes me a couple tries to hold down on the home screen to get the wallpaper option to come up for example. My initial guess is that it's software related...maybe a sensitivity issue? Like it wants to scroll left/right the second you press down which then negates any long-touch pressed-in options until you let go and try again. If that makes sense.

Hopefully this is just software. If there aren't too many having the same issue then it could be hardware.. Are you guys thinking about exchanging for new one?

Right now I'm not. Everything else seems fine. I really think it's just 4.3 or the new screen or something being more sensitive than the old N7. I just tried it now and about 9 of 10 times i got the wallpaper option to come up, but I was paying attention. So who knows!

I was just reading in another post in the q&a section and someone with similar issue exchanged and new one didn't have the same screen issues. So, I may just exchange tomorrow.

Same but I've never owned a tablet before. I thought it might just be hard to hold my finger still on such a big screen where I have the finger extended further.

Try a different launcher. I'm on apex with no problems

So you had the same issues on the stock launcher?

I have it also. I honestly do not think its hardware related as it was similar to my nook HD+ works great on games but keyboard typing and web page links are spotty. Could be wrong but my personal opinion is its an android thing still lol

to follow up i rooted and installed custome recovery. my screen was registering touches terrible and i was getting frustrated especially within dolphin browser ect. i booted into recovery and cleared dalvik cache and it fixed it right up for me anyway

No problems over here... Are you guys in very humid climates? Maybe that could be making a difference if the screen is over/under-sensitive? Or maybe just bad hardware / connections? My screen is working flawlessly, that's all I know.

No issuies here using nova launcher

No issues at all for me either. The digitizer is working flawlessly. Using stock launcher.

Happens to me all the time especially when typing with double inputs. Being pressed especially. Space bar hence my. Over use of periods

I' m having the same problem, especially on the chrome browser and the keyboard. I'm returning mine today, also because my screen has a black line all the screen from top to bottom.

Same problem here, but doesn't happen too often. Running nova launcher. Sensitivity is otherwise great.
Sent from my Nexus 7

I have confirmed this issue on both stock launcher and Nova launcher. I have not tried Apex.
Sometimes touch and hold will work fine, but other times it's frustratingly bad. Seems like I'm not the only one, which makes me think that swapping it probably won't make a difference. I think I'll just hold out for a software update.

I'm having similar problems here. Figured I'd wait until the official release date to see if they push a fix or something before I return it
Sent from my HTCONE using Tapatalk 4 Beta

I experienced it after initial rooting, but since taking the Supersu update I've not experienced it again. Not sure how many of you are experiencing this on a stock OS, or not.

How many people are having this issue?
Ive had it since purchase and im on 4.0.2 now (manually updated) and still having issues.
I have no idea if google or samsung are aware of this but a quick search on google brings up loads of articles about it.
If you not sure download a multi touch test app from the market and follow as they do on the video.
While in landscape mode with the power button at the top the right hand side of the screen will being temperamental which you try to have more than one point on touch on the screen.
I noticed this issue playing heavy gunner today

oke this is a copy of my thread here :Gnex Game thread
"Oke.
just to point this out and help a couple of people.
the current state of gaming on the Gnex is..rater terrible.
Allot of game's camp with the multitouch error/glitch/compatibility.
Yes multitouch doesnt work how it should work.
The cause of this might be the SB(software buttons)
and an API that needs to be implemented to the game to hide the SB.
"
as this might be actually the issue.. that apps dont have the right API/support for the Gnex.
all the linkts and video's you posted are apps that arent native and dont support the GNex at all.
yes they run.but as soon as you get close to the SB you get issue's.
and there is the problem.
the apps need to include the hide SB api that are in the native gnex apps.
there is your problem.
not all apps are affected by this issue due to apps being programmed differently.
(different API level or coding)
as soons as GTA3 has gnex support, than we can see if i was right or you were.

Because its not an ICS nor GNEX issue.
Download unity3D put 2 touchpads next to each other.

just have to wait until they update the games.(rockstar is gone update it[version 1.1 isnt the GNEX update])
its conflicting with the software buttons cuz they arent hidden(they should when the games support Gnex just like tablets not having the bottom bar when playing)

I hope it is easily fixed but i hope its in android source rather than apps as thats alot of incompatible apps.

my multitouch issue only happens with heavy gunners. Once I play heavy gunners, I can see the multitouch issue.
I don't have this issue when playing shadowgun or deadspace.
The first time I tried the multitouch issue it appeared, but after that I have tried a lot of times and is impossible to reproduce the error againg. Eitherway, I have played a lot of times to Modern Combat 2 and I have never had any kind of problem with the multitouch.
BTW, when I achieved reproducing the error, it was just in the typical position of the onscreen controls for games and emulators and just in the left side of the screen if I look it in portrait mode, was strange, in the right side it worked fine, but in the left side not
Mine happens just like in the video. Works perfectly fine until I play a game like heavy gunner, then I get issues. Turn the screen off then back on and everything works again.
edit: Actually, toggling the screen off and back on during the game seems to fix multitouch in-game too
I have the same issue in GTA3 and N64oid.. I hope it will work in updated versions of these apps.
this is what happen to me:
If i'm chargin the phone multitouch goes crazy and doesn't work, litteraly impossible to use, if i unplug the power cord, put the screen off and back on everithing goes back to normal, since i' testing the multitouch with antutu so i'm sure of this bug,
So if only battery powered multitouch ok!
With power cord plugged in multitouch not ok!
let me know what do you think.

Slower After Sense 4.1

Hey guys,
Anyone else experiencing their phone to be slightly slower AT times then when on Sense 4.0? Just sometimes my home screen and other parts of the system will just feel generally slower. The camera seems slower and the 'Developer Options' are really glitch now true. Tell the screen to flash when there is an update and the whole system becomes unresponsive. well, you are the first one from whom i have heard that after installing sense 4.1 your phone is slower...
mate 4.1 is lot faster than sense 4.0 and is locked at 60 fps
try factory reset once and check if these problems still exist
have been using sense 4.1 for more than 2 weeks now and just loving it
Actually it is away faster in the screen switching, it is extremly smooth. However the app drawer lags alittle.
But overall it's faster.

Try a factory reset or if your rooted with a custom recovery just format cache and dalvic cache. Then Give the phone 2 full charges from at least 20% in at least a 2 day span.
It could be a bad app or mod that is causing the issues. Usually it's never a bad ota update that slows the device. Also I recommend a backup program.

Not so great after all...
While I don't notice that my phone is any slower after the update to 4.1, the update hasn't solved my WiFi issue. Which I wasn't really expecting it to, but they did say it should even out the signal, it hasn't. I couldn't tell the difference about the 3D widget stacking or whatever on the stock launcher, 'nor could I notice a difference when opening the app drawer or swiping through homescreens.
That is not to say that the update didn't do anything. I know that benchmarks don't prove much of anything, some argue that they do. I don't really care too much for them, but out of curiosity sake, I ran some. Now, my phone is bone stock, I can't unlock the bootloader because my volume rocker cable is broken. So I'm not rooted, nothing. With Sense 4.0 and Android 4.0.3 I scored horribly, worse than the One X in the stats, at about 3900. I don't know what was going on, but I ran that twice and got the same result. Anyway, after the update to 4.1 and 4.0.4 I scored 5928 and that is with Apex Launcher and Holo Locker locked in memory.
Take from the benchmarks what you will! The 4.1 update does not work miracles, but it's a step in the right direction!

I am very serious, I found it to be very smooth to begin with on 4.0... I didn't have my screens filled with lots of widgets or shortcuts though. That might make a difference. I haven't tried using a livewallpaper yet either. I do notice that Recent Apps seems to be a lot smoother, but with the stock launcher, I don't see much. The app drawer might be quicker to open than before.

I'm experiencing the same after my ota - its great that the menu bar has gone but the home screen and recent apps just feel a bit sluggish.
For example, when opening recent apps, the current app will appear but other apps to the left of it appear after a slight delay. Swiping home screens is definitely more sluggish here; before ota it was a bit jerky (when swiping, home screen would occasionally jump from one position to another, but in general they followed finger location exactly), but now they lag slightly behind my finger, and instead of jumping positions they pause for a moment and then continue to move smoothly. I think this could be caused by the business calendar app though, it usually only happens on that page...
The problem with the launcher closing when a few apps are open is still just as bad as it was before (and still takes about 15-20 seconds to load the launcher again, which does seem a bit excessive...)
But despite the complaining above, it's really not the end of the world and I don't think it's worth bothering to do a factory reset and see if it works although I'm gradually growing to hate sense and might build up the courage to root and flash some experimental roms soon...

Hi,
Had the same problem. Turns out at least on my device after update to 2.17 the dev option "Don't keep activities" was ticked.
I know it wasn't before.
Wonder if it was a battery saving measure. Anyway made my phone sluggish so I turned it off, all back to normal.

GS3 Suddenly Very Slow

Out of nowhere my GS3 is very sluggish. Swiping between home screens is jumpy. Some games literally run at half-speed. Launching apps can take quite some time. Etc...
I haven't installed any new apps since the last time I noticed it was running smoothly. I'm not really sure how to troubleshoot this. I've tried battery pulls, hard resets and clearing the cache from CMW. But nothing seems to work.
I was thinking that maybe an app had been updated in the background that is now a problem. But I can't think of a way to tell which apps have been recently updated.
Any guidance would be much appreciated.
Many thanks!

Factory reset, restore no apps. Check got lag. Add one app, check for lag. Continue until lag is found
And when you add an app back, dl it fresh from the market (no restoring anything).

One of the first things I thought of was that maybe Nova received an update that I wasn't aware of and it had broken something. So I tried TouchWiz and GoLauncher... all with the same result. Overall, the phone felt slightly sluggish. But some things apps and games became unusable. The new Rayman game literally ran at half speed. Other games would run at full speed but you could tell that control response was just a hair off. So you would end up walking off a lot of cliffs to straight into an enemy before you could get a jump off. It also effected load times on most things. Some apps that would load in 4-5 seconds were suddenly taking 30-40.
I can repeat this problem 100% of the time. I even tried toggling off the CPU option but Power Save still gave me the same issues (which doesn't make sense).
I have a completely stock never rooted GS3 and have had this sluggishness since the update. It happens when the screen auto dims, even though I have auto-dimming turned off. It also happens when I wake the screen up. I can't get the notification bar down or anything for about 5 long seconds; then it's fine until the shadow of my finger covers the front light sensor and the screen dims. It's almost like a hiccup. I'm going to factory reset this weekend. Was hoping to get Jelly Bean before I did so I didn't have to download all my apps again, and set all my settings. This is my first Samsung Android and it's an amazing phone when it's first started but after it runs for a few hours it gets buggy; so I'm pretty disappointed.
A note to anyone trying to solve this mystery: before the update I couldn't get my calendar to accept custom notification sounds, now I can. Since not everyone had that issue I'm guessing the software had issues since the day the phone was built. In manufacturing sometimes **** happens.
When in doubt pull it out . Oh I miss the BlackBerry Battery pull days to fix lag

Note II - Laggy and jerky?

I went to try out the Note II in store today - and couldn't believe how laggy it was... I have the Original Note, which feels much faster in comparison.
I noticed lag on
Home Screen - jerky movement
App Drawer - jerky again
Gallery - Took 10 seconds to open, very jerky scroll
Home Button - 3 or 4 seconds to return to home
My note doesn't lag on any of these, even with the new 3D Gallery app.
This was in the UK, O2 store. I even tried it on two display models and they were just as bad
I reminded me of the horrible lag I used to get on the old Galaxy S with 2.2
Anyone else noticed this?

I hate lag & hope the reviews are correct that the Note2 is a game changer for Android sans the dreaded lag but did notice some YouTube Videos on ways to address stock device lag:

I'd also recommend people reboot the device if possible when testing it in stores..

maybe it had all those app runing in the background since most ppl never close them
Mods please close this thread. The Note 2 is the smoothest phone I have ever held. A pure joy to use.

Totally a waste of time reading this topic..
Fired From My FireDevice.
I have close to 150+ apps and widgets on my home screen and I have yet to experience what you are talking about.
But again in stores everyone mess around with a phone and God knows what they do it.

Not sure why the thread would need to be closed. The Op was simply asking a question based on his experience in a store. Some people need to relax!

I agree, some people take things a little to close to heart. But anyway in reply to the OP, I think that it was most likely because of everyone that uses the phone that goes through the store. I guarantee that thing has so many apps running in the background. If you go again, I say try to reboot it, and if you can't do that, try and close out as many apps as possible.
Obvious troll thread imo or the OP is a typical iPhone user in wich case he is not to blame as iPhones prevent you from using your brain
In defense of the OP I would say that I have noticed a very occasional lag once or twice when something has been running. For example running the premium version of printer share caused a massive drain on resources including battery and caused my device to hiccup. Also, I have noticed slowdowns with s-planner and netflix - both have frozen on me forcing at the least a force-close of the app and once a force reboot.
So, before too many people start jumping on the 'It's a troll, run for the hills' bandwagon, perhaps take a minute to realise that the stock device, while being simply awesome, fast, smooth and generally amazing is not completely bug free.
Just a thought.

My point exactly...
I had the same experience in the Vodafone store, the note 2 on display almost came to a halt. I tried holding down the home button to see if there were many apps running but it wouldn't even bring up the task manager. Now I KNOW the note 2 is a beast but an 'average' consumer might have been put off by it.
I still can't make my mind up between this and the S3 LTE version that also comes with 2GB RAM.
Oh come on guys, these in store demo unist are left on for days and days and days without reboot, people mess around with them all day, they are a prime example of a phone at its worse, ram usage will be high, apps won't have been closed properly or at all etc etc.
Dude, turn off Power Saving mode.

I use my phone most of the time with power saving mode, I have about 100 apps and my free ram is about 100Mo and I'm yet to experience any lag at all.

Android 4.2 IMPRESSIONS/THOUGHTS/REVIEW/OVERVIEW

After finally getting the update, I tried 4.2 for the first time. To be honest, I imagined 4.2 to be a needed update to the already amazing 4.1.2.
PERFORMANCE
Like some of the users have stated, there is a slight slow down in performance. After using 4.1, the drop in frame rates in 4.2 is more evident. Apps run slower, laggier, and less smooth. Not all apps though, just some. To name a few would be Apex Launcher, Lock Screen App, Whatsapp (only slightly) and a few others. This bugs me. Project Butter? I definitely do not feel that its faster now despite what people have said.
STABILITY
I don't know how many apps I couldn't run because they forced close. And I'm suspecting its due to this 4.2 update. So now I'm patiently waiting for the updates to hopefully solve the problem.
NEW FEATURES
- Lock screen
I really dislike the new lock screen. It just looks ugly to me. The fonts they used in 4.1 was already great. Why change it to this? Google Now has been placed down at the bottom now, making it slower to access it in my opinion. There were a few times where the phone couldn't detect my swipes - maybe it could just be my fault for not hitting the right place). The idea of having widgets on the lock screen is well...rather niche. There isn't even a lot of widgets that can be added on to the lock screen unless I have to reinstall all my apps that I installed before the update. The worst thing about is, it lags. Even on the lock screen.
- Quick settings menu
I don't really find this helpful. Here's why. I already have an app called 'Notification Toggle' that basically adds toggles in my notification bar. Its minimal, quick and fast. I have no problem with Google adding their own version. Its just that in doing that, they have gotten rid of the settings button at the main notification drawer (one finger pull for notifications). Their own toggles are alright. I'm OK with the look of it, but 5 toggles just isn't enough for me (the others are just shortcuts e.g. settings, profile, battery). Hope Google puts back their settings button like in 4.1 or just improve on their toggles.
- Photosphere
One of the main updates in 4.2. I do like the software and layout behind it. Its really well thought out and its definitely an improvement from 4.1.I can access things faster, capture pictures faster and do photosphere - which is googles new 360 panorama that is similar to Google maps Street View. It isn't exactly perfect but I'm guessing its also the users part to take a well-stitched photosphere.
- Keyboard
This is probably the part where I won't complain. This keyboard is the keyboard I've been waiting for. After using Sense 4's keyboard with 'Swype' gestures, I couldn't find any keyboard that could outmatch it. Everything was perfect for me with that keyboard. But now finally I can say that I have found a better one. Not only aesthetically but also functionally. I type faster and smarter now. Google has done a great job with the prediction engine. Almost 90% of the time I'll get the word I want. And even if I don't, the word will more than likely to appear next to the main predicted word. But I believe that the upcoming updates will improve on that.
CONCLUSION
And no, if you're wondering I'm no apple guy. I prefer Android over iOS. These tiny little things just tick me off sometimes. Especially when it comes to performance issues. Most probably either jumping back to 4.1 or flashing another ROM. I think the only thing I wanted from this update was the 'new' keyboard and probably photosphere. I could've just got it separately and not complain. But anyway, that's my thoughts on 4.2. Quite disappointed as you can tell. If you're thinking of updating, think again before you do.
UPDATE: Replaced lock screen with Widget Locker. One problem down. Weird, but it seems a tad faster now for some reason. Battery life is about the same or maybe a little worse.

I applied the OTA as soon as I was presented to it, and I have to say that something must have gone TERRIBLY wrong! I had an extremely fast and responsive device, now my gnex is really unusable. Slow, hanging, lags is not the proper word, we are talking about geological eras, here! Instead of going back to stock, I want to test some custom roms (I have to reinstall anyway, so what the heck... I will seize the occasion) and see what could have happened, but I am really desperate. I am trying to understand if I really have to go back to 4.1.2...
I did ota and dont have any sort of lag(camera orientation only), i have over a 100 apps installed and none of them have force closed or slowed down

guys.. Looks like u r Talking about another phone.
Have you tried a clean update?
I flashed takju 4.2 and everything is Better, my phone has only one issue: no december on peoples APP.. Even camera has Better features..OK there is no shortcut to see the pics...but man!!! Really!!! try a fresh start with stock 4.2

Yes, that is what I have to do.
I have resistances to doing a full reset because I have made a backup of the SD, but I am happier if my data stay where they are!
For the moment, I will experiment with a couple of ROMs, so I can wipe everything but the SD via recovery.
I'm mostly disappointed with 4.2. A few nice additions I guess: lock screen widgets though it's more or less personal preference, native swipe texting and photosphere. I also like the foundation for multi-users. In the future I think that will be a big thing.
But there are too many downsides. Performance lag compared to 4.1.2 (yes, even after clean install) and my issue with my cheek still pressing things despite the proximity sensor having shut off the screen (I've pressed random numbers and even managed to hang up on people during calls because of it). These are the major things bothering me.
I'll probably be downgrading to 4.1.2 in a few days.

I think the bugs are because something is wrong with the OTA update itself.
I did a takju factory image flash with a clean storage and no performance issues or bugs at all (Except december), but when a friend of mine did the OTA he got most of the bugs people complain about.
Advice: wipe your phone clean and flash the factory image or wait for 4.2.1
I'm quite happy with 4.2
The lock screen is the matter of preference, I like to have the access to the camera when using PIN or gesture lock. In the future I see having some news or weather widget there but definitely not gmail or messaging. I'd quickly regret that if my phone would get lost or stolen.
I love swype functionality. It's a nice blend between two keyboards and it doesn't lag.
Photosphere is big, with some patience you can get amazing results. Try using some kind of tripod for best results.
Gmail pinch to zoom is the long awaited update and works great but also thanks to scaling your emails you can now scroll between emails more easily.
There are parts where the device feels more laggy, less responsive (camera orientation, multi task list) but these will hopefully be fixed with the future updates. And knowing there is no December in people app Google is probably working full speed to bring that 4.2.1 to us

I agree with you on most post points.
What I really wanted to say though is that I'm really impressed that you wrote all this on your phone!

I installed the OTA, and it slowed the phone down. Then I wiped the device clean and flashed the 4.2 image, it was still the same. Google messed up with this one.

No issues here....love the new update

Try flashing a costum kernel, could help out a lot. I prefer Franco Kernel.

I was having the same issues, when I installed it, but now I flashed a ROM and they changed these things. Try it yourself!
One more thing: white is really white on 4.2

One annoying thing, that you haven't mentioned, is that I'm able to change the notification (calls, texts, etc) volume from the lock screen.
Edit: As soon as I get enough time, I'll downgrade to 4.1.2 again.

4.2 made for nexus 4 which is quadcore device,so is it feel any different in gnex with dualcore??
I feel no difference between the two performance/battery wise. No dramas with it or whatsoever. I see no reason why not to upgrade to 4.2 but that's just me
