Why would you buy the 32gb model when you can use otg usb? - Nexus 7 (2013) Q&A

Thank you
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app

Because I had the cash to

because I like to carry my tablet alone, not a wire and a usb stick or harddrive so its a ease of convenience factor.

Because I don't want to carry a bunch of extra peripherals and have junk dangling from my tablet.

Because of course no one Will like to have wire hanging out your device and also internal flash is way faster than usb also pendrive sucks huge amount of battery every time you use it
Liked My Suggestion Please Use Thanks Button

Basically what every one else said the price difference is so low why not have the extra onboard storage. I really don't carrying around extra stuff as it is. Its sorta why I refuse to buy a laptop with a DVD drive, because I know I'd end up buying an external one because all my media is not in the cloud, especially the things I do for work.

convenience. Do you really want to have a tail hanging out of the bottom of the device everytime you want to watch a movie?

I think a better question would be, why would you want to carry around extra crap?

Because it'd rather not have to rely on having a usb stick/hard drive plugged in every time I want to watch something

because it was what, 40 dollars more? what a silly question. I have a 16 gig s4 with a 64 gig card. I need space. my old nexus was 32. my HTC dna is only 16 with no card and at every given moment I only have like 700mb free. it's awful.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 4 Beta

I wanted the 32gb, but it was out of stock.
Now knowing that usb otg works i have no regrets though - i think it was a better choice actually!
I'm importing this thing so an extra $40 = more like $60, and i never had any space issues with my old 16gb n7.
Also backed the microsd kickstarter, which is very compact and can store my 64gb sandisk with media on it.
It takes like half a min to copy over a movie to internal and you're done.
Also being able to access and manage files without the need to plug my n7 to a PC (when i want to add a movie) is so much easier, just plug in the portable hard drive and play...
There are some really portable otg cables out there, mine is smaller than an average usb drive.
Unused space = wasted space, so no regrets...

I got the 16GB. My 32GB original N7 was never filled past halfway. All my music is on my phone and when I watch something on it, it's usually via netflix. If I really need that space for some reason (long plane ride or something) I can deal with the OTG cable sticking out.

Nandroid backups will add up, especially since this thing has a 1080p screen. Idk how I'd feel about restoring a backup through USB otg.

Personally, since it has no sd card, I played it safe. My music alone would never fill it up, though i have some ~ 3,900 songs.
When I load up game of thrones, it takes some space. I'd use my otg for long trips or if i won't have access for a while.
Also, you can't use otg without an app that will mount it, currently, until its enabled in custom roms.

Indeed, loading up movies & videos for viewing while travelling, it eats up space fast. For an extra $40 seems silly not to opt for the 32gb if one had the availability and choice.

Because USB OTG requires root in order to mount the flash drive and I'd rather be root free.

Moral of the thread
Different strokes for different folks
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 4 Beta

I am actually a big fan of secure cloud. Netflix and YouTube, Hulu, and other less known sites. I have many devices but I don't think I've gone beyond 8 on any. Just not a prob for me. But I can see where it would be for some. I have like more books on nook than I can readily count, music, games and when it comes to backup's I push to PC, usually wirelessly lol. I find it safer to store on PC plus no room issues. This is a play with device to hold me till the big boys start popping out and I'm frugal. That said I'm coming to like her much more than I thought I would. When this tab gets a few more mods it will really be a beauty.
Like the man said, different strokes.

32GB sandisk microSDHC for $99

just a heads up... did a search on this forum for "32GB" and didnt find anything. didnt bother searching "microsdhc" since so many people would have a different way of typing it out that it would be near impossible to find on a search.
anyways, Verizon Wireless seems to have the SanDisk 32GB microSDHC cards IN STOCK and is selling them for $99 online with free overnight shipping. most places havent had stock EVER since it was released a couple of months ago. original retail price on them began at $240 or something.
unfortunately, these are Class 2 only, but generally it's not the card that's the bottleneck when it comes to speed on your device. i popped mine in this morning when it arrived and have had no problems with reading at all; 350mb XviD avi rips of TV shows like Rescue Me and 550mb XviD avi rips of Top Gear all play back flawlessly on my Samsung Vibrant.
write speeds have a bit to be desired, but i cant complain due to faster cards being unavailable. compared to my Class 6 16GB card, it has no ill effects from what i have so far observed while in the device.
cliffs: $99 for a SanDisk 32GB microSDHC from verizonwireless.com with free overnight shipping. normal price from them is $150, but is on special for now... the original deal was $50 off with the purchase of a Droid X, but that seems to have changed for a limited time. cheapest i can find it anywhere else using Google Shopping is $140 before tax+shipping.
Thanks for the heads up. Do a search on Engadget for an article on it (I can't post the link). Apparently it just hit the store 8 days ago.
Still, I dunno. I'm kind of on the fence about getting it due to the price (just dropped $550 on the phone itself).

I think they meant to point out that unless you want to carry around a tiny breakable easy to lose 16gb card in ur pocket or bag and switch out when you need to, having 32gb in one card is more convenient which combined with how newly available the card is, it is quite cheap for the price. You only pay a bit more per GB in this case, normally you'd pay 2-3x more in the beginning for the new highest capacity in flash memory.

I know at least for me, there's never enough space. Unless they somehow manage to offer Terabyte microSD cards. Even the, I'm sure I'd find a sure for it.
Music, movies, games, ebooks, audiobooks, work files, space for pictures and videos, etc.
Do you NEED to have that much stuff on you? No, but it's nice to have access to everthing and worry less about space.
I know I have 14gb of music on my card and that's mostly just ONE genre of music. I have over 150gb of music. And yes, I do listen to all 14gb that I do have on there. It's good to have access to lots of music for parties and get togethers. Remote access is not always a perfect solution.
Again, I don't NEED all the space, but I sure as heck will use it when I have it.
If I had more space, I'd also partition space on my phone for portable apps. Having access to FireFox, GIMP, Openoffice, 7zip, etc wherever I go is a huge plus.

well yes, I agree, there are things to use the space. I'm just saying given the phone limitations wouldn't it be easier to dropbox and/or grab crap off the pc? The thing does have allshare/server capabilities to make that easier.

Do you need to be plugged into the PC to get the files off of it? I assume you do, but even if you didn't, think of all the battery power wasted to get the files when you want them. e.g. let's say I am on a bus or stuck waiting for something and want to watch a show or movie on my pc on my phone. I'd need to get on 3g, hope it can all stream fast enough, and the battery would run out super fast using 3g and playing a video all at once.
Also as for the 32gb 16gb argument. I might be able to work with limited storage, but I personally could fill about 5tb or more with anime and movies and tv shows that I'd like, and if I could carry all of that on my phone, and be able to select anything I want immediately and have it right there, that would be amazingly convenient. Therefore as far as I am concerned 16gb, 32gb, it's never really enough, people can always fill more space. However I will deal with having only a 16gb card on my Epic 4G when it comes out.
I thought the max microSD card the phone accepts is 16 gigs as per specs supplied in the manual. Guess those are wrong then? Good to know! Thanks for posting this topic!!

i can fit 20GB of movies, TV shows, and music on a single card without having to connect my phone to a computer to add more.
THAT wont fit on a 16GB card. i dont carry my laptop wherever i go, therefore i dont really have access to any data beyond the 16GB card. maybe you are always near your computer, but i'm not.

none.
i set the removable card slot as the save point for the camcorder app and recorded nearly 7 minutes of video with lots of movement. no issues when recording.
i then played it back using both the built-in video player and eStrong File Explorer's built-in video player and experienced no dropped frames, freezing, or slowdowns, nor did the audio and video go out of sync.
i'm a hobbyist photographer so reliable, fast memory cards are something i'm always on the lookout for. because of this, i've sampled a lot of different brands in the past (i'm always testing different brands to try and find cheaper alternatives for my camera) and have found that SanDisk flash memory cards are consistently much faster than their rated spec. this result with the 32GB microSD is probably no different nor that unusual, based on my previous experience.
if i have some free time this morning and will do some read/write tests of the SanDisk 32GB Class 2 card alongside the original Samsung 2GB card that the Vibrant came with, a SanDisk 2GB Class 2 card, and a SanDisk 16GB Class 6 card i used in my HD2.

i really dont understand how anyone can manage to COMPLAIN about more data space, or that someone bothered to share a good deal they had found. either you people lead unhappy lives or you're lashing out because you're unable to afford one... because there's no logical explanation you can create to support an argument against a 32GB card except price.

the microSDHC spec allows for up to 32GB. it's just taken this long (released in the beginning of this year, or so) for a company to create a chip dense enough to reliably manufacture a 32GB microSD card.
the new spec, microSDXC, will cover sizes ranging from 32GB up to 2TB in the Secure Digital format. 64GB SDXC cards are already available from Panasonic and SanDisk.

is 16gb enough for you.

i was seriously considering this phone, only to find it comes with just 16gb of memory, this day in age comeon google,so basically you would need an extra mp3 player for music?
Mine has 32GB but I use less than 16GB since I use Google Music.
I also don't really watch any video on my phone either, that is what my 64GB iPad is for.
Plenty for me. I don't watch movies on it. I stream all of my music from Google music. I think I have about 9 GB free.

16 gig is more than enough
i still have 9 gig free space
Its manageable
The LTE version has 32 GB, the GSM's only have 16. I have a 16 GB version in Canada where we can't get Google Music and its only ok because I have a tablet with most of my music. If all I had was the phone it would be an annoyance.
16gigs sucks. I have to manage my data. And the speed of the internal NAND is slow. My atrix external sd card was 3 times faster and the internal storage was 4 times faster.

Well in this day and age I believe streaming is king so the only local data you need to worry about are a few photos and apps. The rest you can store on the cloud and 16gbs then looks like a huge amount!
I've been very happy with it and don't see how I will ever fill up this device.
Streaming may be king .... unless you have a restricted data plan like everyone in the uk. So internal memory is a big deal if your phone is used as a music player

I could easily use the full 16gig, however, if I actually moved all my videos, photos, backups and unneeded downloads on to my pc, I could easily run with about 10gig free.

I have the 16GB version as well, and it doesn't bother me much. I am used to having a 32GB sdcard, but that's not an option so I make due. Much like the others, I stream music and watch movies via Netflix.

[Q] Do you miss having a microSD card?

After 10+ years with Sprint, I'm thinking about jumping ship to Straight Talk and dumping my Epic 4G Touch (Galaxy SII) for a Galaxy Nexus when my contract expires. I have a 32GB Class 10 card almost filled up with tunes, pictures, and a few ROMs and backups. The 64GB cards are coming down in price and I was thinking about getting one.
However, I see that the Nexus doesn't have a card slot. How are you guys coping with the lack of extra storage? Obviously you are, but it seems like a big step down for me to lose that capability. There must be enough positives about this phone to overcome the lack of a card slot. I'd like to hear what they are.
My Sprint contract doesn't run out for a few months, so I have time to explore other options. Maybe there will even be a new Nexus with a card slot by then.
I, personally, have the TORO.
32 gig.
But only have half of it filled anyway.
I stream my music...
And have multiple nandroids on my phone (that I really don't need more than one of).
It hasn't bugged me at all.
i dont mind it at all. i dont have to worry about moving apps to the SD card to get space on the phone partition. it works out better i think
It is probably a bigger deal to someone looking to get a 64GB card to go down to 16GB but it isn't the worst. I stream videos from my computer using apps and stream my music with Spotify and after those two large space takers are out of the way 16 GB is pretty big haha

It was a big deal to me at first. I have found other ways to cope. Putting important photo albums on Picasa helped a lot, as does Google Music.

The only reason is for flashing new roms, but I think that doesn't flash certain directories, like the sdcard directory, so would that be the same, to store stuff there?
I do sort of miss it. I miss that fact that i could just pop in my sd card into my laptop and drag a ROM to flash if i couldnt get my epic to boot. It definetly came usefull when i had to test my themes... when one wouldnt work i could find the fix just load it on the sd card and try that. However i think with the nexus.. booting into the bootloader you can just adb push things right? Anyways, i put all the music i had in my music folder which is about 2.3gigs on Google Music.. stream that when i want to. Use cloud storage for most my other things such as .apk's ive themed and tools for apk themeing . But for the most part ive only filled about 2 gigs so far... on the sprint 32gb. I guess it all depends on preference and circumstances. But im sure you could find an alternative for storage.

What he said.
Streaming music/video + having google drive/picasa makes me only use the storage for some photos anyway.
My old phone, Defy+, had about 8GB so the Nexus is an improvement.
However I select my music I carry with me and I don't even watch videos. If I had 64GB or more I would put alot more music onto it, but I don't miss it. Just nice to have, but there is no point of "oh gawd, what should I delete...".
OTG + USB-Stick is also an option, if you want to watch a movie at a friends house or something.
I do miss it a little...
I do think it's interesting that The phone manufacturers seems to be pushing us to use the cloud more, resulting in more bandwidth being used, and the carriers are pushing people off of unlimited data plans unto tiered plans... Something has to give...
I miss it because I like having all manner of videos, music, etc on tap for entertainment. I've learned to deal with it by streaming music and uploading videos and pictures rather than storing them all on the card.

miss a bit an scard slot (i have the 16gb version,in my country gnex 32gb it doesn't exist.if i have a 32 gb version,i don't think i've miss the microsd.
I'd just gotten mine and the lack of micro sd isn't a deal breaker, plus like some said you could get an otg cable and flash drive. Personally i got this as my keychain, it's gotten expendable memory and has both a regular and micro usb side to it a bit pricey though.

How you justify not getting the 32gb for $40 more

I went with the 32, I was actually running out of space on the 16 and as you pointed out the price diff being so minimal, why not.
The cloud =þ, I don't use a lot of internal space, and I rather have a lot of my documents sync through out my other devices. $40 can still be a lot for some, but I'm glad they aren't charging $75+ like on other devices. Kind of wish they had expansion slots just in case you needed the extra space.
Because with that $40 savings I bought a Chromecast and still had $5 for a milkshake
well you could plug a 32GB SD card for less than that........ owh wait you can't!!!!
I just never needed it on my last one. I only load up videos when i know I'm going to need them. even on my last trip, with 6 HD movies i still had 2GB free.
I'm not a big tablet gamer though....and that extra cash will come in handy for other, more important things in my life....like a chromecast...or you know, baby food or something
IMO you only need the space for music and videos.
My kids, I keep with tablets with MicroSD - so I can slap a bunch of video/TV on there for trips and stuff.
Me, I don't need the space because I don't watch movies or TV on it, and music goes on my phone. I'd rather read wherever I'm at.
I use it for browsing / email / DOS and console emulation and the occasional pdf. I read on my e-ink nook. I watch movies and TV on my plasma/HT setup. 16GB is plenty enough.
I don't game on them either - I have only minor interest in the occasional tablet game. If I game it's DOS emulation, NES, SNES, or something like that. 16GB is plenty of room for that stuff.

IMO you only need the space for music and videos.

This exactly.
I have a OTG cable that I used on my Nexus 7 when I was going on trips for movies.
Because the only ones I could find available today (in Austin) were at Bestbuy and they were only selling the 16 G and I wanted mine NOWWWW!!

Because with that $40 savings I bought a Chromecast and still had $5 for a milkshake

what he said, I scored both as well.
Because I never filled up the 16GB on my S3 and $40 is a decent amount of money. With most media apps using the cloud now, the only thing I'd use space for is the apps I download and any pictures/videos I take, and I can't see using the Nexus 7 for its (inferior) camera when I always have my phone with me.
All my apps just got downloaded when I signed in to my Google account, the phone shows 11.94GB total usable, I have 10.84GB available. I'm just over 1GB, after I sync some music and put some eBooks on it, I'll still probably have over half the space free.
they say the N7 has 9 hours of HD video play back battery life. I better have enough storage for 9 hours of HD contents. So I went with 32gb.

Fellow Austinite here. I can confirm that this is true and I have to go all the way to Bee Caves to pick mine up.
I got the 32gb, but yeah I read somewhere that the difference that it costs companies to make thier tablet a 32gb instead of a 16gb is $4.00 for them. So there you go.
Even better, not $40 - try 15. Pick it up from best buy on amex with the current amex sync offer and the 16gb won't make the cut of $250 for the $25 back (unless you live in CA) but the 32gb does. Makes the choice simple.
Then add on the staples coupon and BAM!
I just use mine to stream so Im good. 16GB all the way
OTG is all I need !
I have some many flash devices besides MicroSDs.
The adapter doesn't bother me 1 bit. Rather I prefer it (as a reminder to put away my data).
I have the TF101 (w/microSD) and I forget the card in there all the times.
Now all my microSDs are in the USB-adapter --> harder to get lost.
Because I have a 64G microsd in my Droid Razr, a 32G in my Samsung Note 10.1 and a 64G on my keychain. Plus a dozen others of various sizes.
Once I get my OTG cable for the Nexus 7, I will be able to swap 224G between my devices. (no, its not a math error. That $40 is going to pay for most of the $48 that the new 64G Sandisk costs on Amazon. (for the OTG dongle)

Eh OTG is not nearly as reliable and easy to use as internal storage especially if you travel much out use your tab on the go.

This! I did this earlier today. 235.09 out the door including taxes after 25$ AMEX sync!

Should I get 16gb or 32gb - 60€ difference

I assume this has been discussed somewhere but I really need a quick answer. I have a chance to get the 16gb model for 242€ do to a discount or the 32gb for 299€ on regular price. I have to order today though. I would have initially got the 32gb model on sale for 269€ but they ran out
I would use it to watch series and movies on the go and at home. Probably books too. Not really a huge fan of games though. I currently have a 16gb phone with 2gb SD card and still have some room in that. Not watching movies with it though.
So is the price difference worth going for 16gb model?

If you can afford it I would take the larger model given the lack of an SD slot. I want all the storage I can get because I don't want to think too hard about what's in and what's out when loading up media and apps. You can use USB OTG but its not a perfect solution IMO. (I do intend to use external memory as well though).

Go with the 32 GB model. Regardless of whether you play games or not, you will most likely experience storage issues. If you intend to play movies, and if the intent is to copy the movies locally and then watch, then you will need a high storage device. I play 720p movies on my N7 and each movie file is massive.
You will need storage depending on your rooting and installation of custom rom preferences, along with using applications like titatnium backup,
Go with the 32 Gig, you will not regret it.
32gb

Storage space is like money. You can never have too much! Definitely 32Gb.
Over the years, I have had 2x TF101s (16GB + 64GBmicroSD),16GB Nooks (1x Color, 4x HD+s .. all with microSDs), 1x Gtab 16GB (microSD, USB), 2x 2012N7s (16GB & 32GB) and now 1x 16GB 2013N7.
The 32GB 2012N7 is my only 32GB device ... it never gets to under 20GB available.
I store MP3s and eBooks on the internalSD. Also I have navigation SW (with large offline maps) and a few large games on-board.
I have large movies on external storages. I actually like the OTG (on N7s) much much better than the actual microSD slot.
Why ?
* I could quickly swap the flash devices. They don't have to be the small&expensive microSDs.
* I would never forget to remove the external storage, when I leave my tab around. If it gets stolen ... I just get another.
It's just me. If you can afford it, go get the 32GB version. At least you feel better.
For me, the 16GB extra doesn't help much. I need a ton more anyway.
Keep in mind the is takes up space too. When it says 16 it's not all free space. I went for the 32 if you are opting to have something nice go all the way. Just my opinion.

That should say os takes up space so keep that in mind.

You get 4GB less of usable space. 12GB of usable space on the 16GB model and 28GB on the 32GB model.
I'll get the 32gb one for 299€ as soon as they go on sale. I'll probably keep it for 3 years or so anyway. I'm going to do compulsory military service for 6 months soon and I'll pack my tab full on vacations
Thanks for your input everyone! The only thing I fear is that they release nexus 8 as I think that would be the ideal size for me.
