I agree. This 30 pin connector, proprietary charging, no HDMI, coupled with no JB 4.2 so no miracast, this is one disconnected, connected, wired and shackled but supposedly mobile device.
I've only had it for three weeks and I miss a more connected, but liberated device.
It's frustrating cause this could be soooooo good.

Hdmi....would never use it....what to shackle it up to my tv? Pretty sure micro USB is not feasible for 2 amp charging. This baby already is soooooo good.

my playbook, and my note 2 use 2 amp chargers. I just lucked or on the 30 pin connector because I had a mini usb to 30 pin connector for my tab 2 7.0, and an extra cable.
The tf300 was a dream to type on with the dock, but honestly, my note 10.1 kicks the crap out of it. The oem cover works great, with the exception of a lot of e's that come out 3.

I had no idea that this was happening.
It would be awesome if Samsung could come up with a transformer-esque type of keyboard/cover, or even a touch-cover like the Surface.
It makes the idea of a "Note netbook/laptop" a good one, but with two separated accessories i.e. stand + bluetooth keyboard, that idea is gone.
Shame :/
The tablet must be a tablet, not a computer if you want a computer buy it separately. A tablet is made for commands through touchscreen, if you want to have a tablet with dock keyboard buy a tablet-pc ( i own one..)

Eh? I can find the Samsung connector (which is actually a standard called "PDMI") just about anywhere (at least in the States), I've got more charger options now than i had with my Moto Xoom, especially if you buy one of these. HDMI and AllShare Cast work on my device, too.
I've used 4.2 and we're not really missing much useful save the multi-user feature.
I have 4 BT Keyboards, including one with a built-in stick mouse and a cover that folks to make a stand; the combo (which is light enough I carry it around in a case with my Note) gives me everything I could get with the KB dock except maybe charging and it's apparently more portable as well.
I'd say we're pretty well-connected

seriously though, the battery life on the note 10 is pretty good, I would like the extra peripherals, like the full size sd and usb ports on the transformer docks.

This. I've been able to travel with only my tablet (on certain business trips even) and have most of what i'd needed to do be accessible that way.
I went to verizon yesterday & saw a Samsung branded Keyboard dock for the Tab10.1. I tried it with the display model Tab 2 10.1 & it fit. I thought that the Tab 210.1 & the Note 10.1 were the same size. I was gutted to find it was not. It works if you pull out the plastic guide/holder, but then it is kind of flimsy in there. Bummer.
Wasnt there a rumor somewhere that one of Samsungs next tablets was going to be transformer-esque? I could have sworn I read something a few months ago about it.

Well, with the GNote 10.1 LTE coming to VZ soon, I'd expect they'd be getting accessories there, too (and likely to be hugely overpriced), so I'd come back again a little while after the GNote's available in VZ stores.
Tempted to grab one off ebay. What can I say, sometimes I get typity.

That sounds sort of narrow-minded in my opinion. Why can't a tablet be both or why can't a computer be a tablet? For an artist like me, I would love the opportunity if tablets got powerful enough to rival their notebook counterparts and offered a desktop view as well as for easy access with a keyboard and trackpad.
With the move of ultrabooks , especially the Surface Pro, converging into tablet territory with full features, one must consider that to be a blessing than a curse. Think about it in this way: Would you carry a radio, cd player , portable DVD player with TV, game system and an ereader just to be able to use them, or would you opt for the simpler solution of an all in one deal? That is the number one reason why the iPod took off: portability. Not only can you get a radio, but a music player and now video, games and reading.
It gets roughly cumbersome to carry every single CD, DVD ,game cart/disc in addition to the hardware , let alone the books for brief reading in commutes in comparison to an all out deal.
For the average consumer and artist, such things are so hard to get that it is pushed towards the rich ,but now similar tech now exists that has the potential to allow for maximal power and capability and the ability to change form factors on the fly. Why should people have to be inconvenienced to buying several different products that can be brought under one device when it can be deducted into one singular product that is amazing and does it all , broadly speaking?
If we went by this flawed logic an mp3 player must play music only, but no radio , thus how would iPods and whatnot be popular if they didn't serve multiple functions simply?

Thanks.....I think. Glad to hear about the PDMI. Just have to figure out how to use it.
What I was trying too say is everything is an add on so my kit ends up being as bulky as my ultrabook and far more prone to losing some piece that makes the whole thing work. my last tablet logged about 100k+/- frequent flyer miles. Using one power brick with one power end, one multi headed usb, one multi headed hdmi, one universal battery charger brick fit neatly in an airplane amenity bag, and served two cameras, one phone and a tablet. Needed no OTG cable to get the CF card reader seen by the tablet. Because I have a GNex, I already have a data/sync switch on my usb cable.
The cameras are the hardest and heaviest to carry.
So far, I've had to add another amenity kit to add the adapters for the Note. And I still don't have a way of using it to run a projector or tv. My phone ends up doing that.

I'm assuming being able to charge the device isn't a necessity, since you linked to the Incipio stand. I actually bought a black plastic stand at my local TJMaxx(or Ross, or Marshalls. One of those, lol) for only $4.99 or $5.99. I bought it for my Asus Infinity (10.1" tablet), and it works great in both landscape and portrait! Since getting my '13 N7 a few days ago, I've put it in the dock in both landscape and portrait as well. It also works great in either position! I've had my Note 2 in it, and even my Evo LTE before . Though, some of the display is blocked when either my Note 2 or Evo LTE is in this dock/stand. Just stating how versatile it is by being able to hold my 10.1" tablet, 7" tablet, 5.5" phone, and even 4.7" phone, all with perfect stability! If interested, you might want to check online for something similar. Knowing how well it works and how discreet it really is, I wish I would have bought at least 3 of these when the store had them in stock!

Microcenter has those for $6.99.
Another cheap option would be small photo easels. Foldable and prop your tablet up for useability anywhere in the house. They are often available at the dollar stores, so you really can't beat the price.
Microcenter has a nice-looking metal stand that raises the tablet if you want to use it as a secondary monitor.
None of these are docks, of course, but the design of the Cygnett stand would keep the charging cord out of the way.

I wonder if there will be an Official dock that lets you:
1. Charge
2. Expand TV HDMI out
3. USB port for Hard drive access
I really want the Nexus & FHD to be a Home entertainment player...may be a remote/ Or Kinect like gesture control app built in with the dock
Hope this comes true...it will be the best Combo for a home unit!

It is pretty lightweight! It's hollow inside though, so you could easily add some weight to it! It hasn't been an issue for me in the few months that I've had it. My Asus Infinity is a pretty big device, but this stand handles that tablet just fine. Here's a picture of the bottom of the stand showing that it's hollow, but still has plenty of unused space inside of it to add your own weights to it if you wanted.

I completely agree with you with an official Asus/N7 dock!! Charger is a must (obviously), an HDMI port would be great, at least 1 USB port, and a 3.5 auxiliary jack for audio!! If they would release an official dock with all of these features, then I would not think twice about buying it(assuming it's less than $100, should be around $50)!!!! Even without the HDMI port, as long as the other 3 are included then I would buy it! ChromeCast is going to be a pretty common household item for all Android users, especially given the low price point! That said, an HDMI port isn't a feature that I would choose over an auxiliary audio jack! Sure I could just stream music to my home theater system using ChromeCast, but I also have smaller speaker systems that I'd like to be able to use without connecting via bluetooth(Jawbone Big Jambox for example), and they won't be nearly as loud as my home theater for when I'm not trying to have everyone in the house listen to the same thing as I am!!
Also, my Asus Infinity has a mini HDMI port built in to the side of the tablet. I mainly use it for gaming anyway, but especially when I'm wanting to play on my flat screen TV!! Just so easy with the Sixaxis app, a PS3 controller, an having the HDMI port right on the tablet! I have an HDMI - mini HDMI cable hooked to my TV at all times. Basically, I said all of that just to say that this is probably the main reason that an HDMI port on the official dock isn't really that important to me, and why I'd prefer the 3.5mm jack over the HDMI port. That's IF I couldn't have both anyway!

Freaking pricey for a wireless charger though!! QI chargers can be found around $30 pretty easily now. The dock you linked should have at LEAST a 3.5mm port on the back if nothing else for them to have thy audacity to charge that much for it!!! Geez!!!

have you seen the Tylt Vu? thats $100.
But this really isnt that pricy imo...I'd much rather pay $50 to have an elegant dock / stand that will charge in portrait AND landscape than buy a $30 pad that you have to lay the tablet down on and thus lose the functionality of it. Plus it wont slide off on this.
Putting a nice dock with a qi charger warrants another $20 to me.

It looks like it uses the USB port for charging. My experience has not been good doing this.
I was looking for a Qi compatible cardockingstation and i found the Owl Carpad, it looked good and was according the site compatible with the nexus 4, now the question: will it work with a Nexus 5? i found different stories all over the internet, has enyone tried it?
Because i'm a new forummember i can't place a link here..
Or do you recommend a different carmount?
Also i was thinking of placing a NFC-sticker on the inside of the charger so that if i place my phone it will automaticly start my navigation, bluetooth an spotify but will it work? because of the field generated by the charging.
Tomorrow i will be replacing my N4 with a N5!!!(Sorry i'm just happyXD)

i believe as long as it states Qi, that it will be compatible. Qi is a universal standard so it should work with all Qi compatible devices.

Ok true, but the location of the coil for charging is lacated different to the nexus 4 i think, of it's a couple of mm to hight i won't charge i'm affraid

There was alot of talk about this in the Nexus 4 forums, and one of the devs was acting as a US distrobutor of sorts as well to help save on shipping costs. Someone over there probably has a Nexus 5 by now and could probably answer your questions with first hand knowledge.

Hey, I live in Korea so I got mine real quick. I ordered the Nexus 5 bundle kit where they sent a desktop QI charger, the car QI charger with both suction and vent mounts. They've both been great, but also keep in mind I've only had them for a few hours. My daily commute is about 30 minutes so I'll get a better feel of the car dock in the coming weeks. The Nexus 5 slides/clips in real smooth and easy and is easy to get out. We'll see how it holds up to bumps and whatnot.
I've read some people saying it cuts off charging at around 90%, so I'll be testing that plus how it holds up with navigation software running. For my purposes, I don't really expect it to charge the battery while running navi, but at the very least, to prevent drain. So far, I like.

Yeah but wireless is a bit nicer, in the car and you will not make the dock work the first time, you wil spend hours drawing, printing and fitting, and i will probably look not as nice.
I just ordered the nexus 5 charging pack from Owl, it was €80, with taxes from Holland it's €100 for 2 wireless chargers what is a lot of money, i sure hope the Qi standard will work with my next devicesXD

I'll be very interested in your report - if it works OK I'll get one, but I can wait a week or 2 to see how those of you who have one go with it.
I've had one for the Nexus 4 for almost a year now. I'll be getting my Nexus 5 tomorrow so I can update you guys.
I've used the Owl Carpad with my N4 for the past 6 months or so and while it works okay as a wireless charger, it doesn't quite cut it as a car dock. With constant screen-on with nav running it could not increase charge and even lost charge most times unless the phone was completely idle. On longer trips with music streaming and nav running (Waze or Google Nav) I would have to kill the screen constantly to cut battery drain.
Regardless of that, my N4 Owl Carpad does not work with the N5 due to the coils being aligned differently between the phones, something to keep in mind with any wireless charger which doesn't allow for adjusting placement of the phone -Tylt, Nokia Dt-910, etc.
I love wireless charging at the home and office but I haven't seen a mobile solution yet which can stand up to the intensive battery drain phones experience while used as a HUD while driving. My 2cents.

Regardless of that, my N4 Owl Carpad does not work with the N5 due to the coils being aligned differently between the phones, something to keep in mind with any wireless charger which doesn't allow for adjusting placement of the phone -Tylt, Nokia Dt-910, etc.
I love wireless charging at the home and office but I haven't seen a mobile solution yet which can stand up to the intensive battery drain phones experience while used as a HUD while driving. My 2cents.

I'm actually toying with the idea (working with several ideas actually, this is just one) of picking up the Owlpad and swapping out the half bridge coil most of these qi chargers use for a full bridge and balance out the power to increase output slightly so that I can actually charge the phone effectively under heavy load. If I end up doing it then I'll obviously post a tutorial and required items, but it feels like there's a really weak spot in the market for effective qi car chargers. Either that or I'll crack it open and adjust the coil positioning for the N5 and use the new board they offer to make it work with the N5 and offer a tutorial for that. We'll see, still exploring ideas and seeing which ones come out on top for time vs. cost of materials.
I like the mount for the owl pad but the charger is worthless. It overheats the phone unless mounted over a vent and only slows the drain if navigation is on along with the screen.
I was trying to find a small charger I can tear down and insert into the owl pad mount. I know that they offer a new PCB but there's no way I'm going to give them more money for their crap.

I've had the Owl CarPad for over a week now and after seeing some other complains and comments and running my own tests, I've come to the conclusion that it's perfect for me. For my uses, it's exactly what I want.
Mount: Excellent
The phone is super easy to slip in and out of the holder. Being able to get my phone in and out with one had was really important for me. With my old car mount, I always had to lean over and use two hands.
Performance: Acceptable
As others have said, and as they say on their blog, with navigation running and screen at 100%, the phone does lose charge, but a lot slower than it would without any sort of charge of course. I find this acceptable because:
1) A byproduct of wireless charging is wasted energy in the form of heat. I've used four different QI chargers now, and only two have been able to increase the battery's charge while still running navigation software. The problem? While using both of those chargers, the phone heated up to about 47 Celsius. Not good. Using the CarPad, the highest I've seen it go is 42. Still high, but when running navigation + USB charging, it got up to 39, so I'm okay with that. I'm sure the CarPad could probably charger faster to prevent drain, but that would get way too hot.
2) I use navigation about once a month at most. The main reason I wanted this car dock was for convenience. My daily commute is about one hour each way, so it's nice to keep the phone topped off. I opened it up and added an NFC sticker to the inside so that it turns on Play Music and Bluetooth when I slide it in the dock. So, 99% of the time, I'm just using my phone to stream music to my car stereo, and the CarPad is able to charge my phone while that's going on. I still have the old USB charger from my GNexus, so I can use that in a pinch. Again, I'm okay with this.
Conclusion: I like it; I'm happy.
I've used a few other QI car mounts (borrowed from friends, didn't spend/waste money), and this is the best one I've come across. I think the customer service I've received has also been excellent. Due to time zone differences, it may be about 24~48 hours before hearing back, but they're happy to answer any questions and concerns you have. I can see why some people have complained about the charging performance of the Owl products, but for what I use it for, it's perfect.
Quick Edit: Forgot to add, they do have an upgraded version they send you for the Nexus 5. It's not the same internals as the one for the Nexus 4.

Why not design a holder that the LG pucks can sit in then you will have wireless and a holder.
Ok, so this is a really silly idea, is there a way to use my Note 10.1 as a secondary monitor from my graphics card? I'm using an ASUS MARS 760 with a DVI converter and was wondering if it was possible to plug it into the HDMI to MiniUSB on my note and use the note as a 2560X1600 Display. The main reason is so that I can have a 299 DPI while playing Watchdogs/Skyrim. The Operating system of the display computer is Window 8.1 SP1
A further question is, while using this set up is there a way to use the Speakers, Wacom pressure touchscreen and the front camera built into the note as well? Essentially making this thing a hybrid of a Ciniq and an all in one monitor and an intended touch screen for Windows 8.1. The graphics card also has a Mini Displayport output.

So an update:
TwoMon and iDisplay work great as a second monitor if you're using the graphics from the processor via usb, so games that are meant to work with intel graphics go without much of a hitch (save for the 40FPS of the programs... but I don't know much about modding apk files. Let alone screen refresh rates). So far no go with the graphics card. I still haven't figured out if there's a way to get a tablet to accept input via an HML cable. Does anyone know if this is possible? Or am I just wasting my time on a futile effort?
MHL etc on Tablets and Phones is strictly for output. Which is a shame, as using it for such things could be cool.

I'm not quite sure what you're trying to do, but I've been thinking about using my tablet as a second screen or remote display for Win8. I plan to get Microsoft's Remote Desktop for Android, but need to get the 8.1 Pro upgrade to make it work. I might also try JUMP Desktop, which also requires 8.1 Pro, and has full touchscreen support, making it just like using a Win 8.1 tablet, but remotely. I have a good university network so it should work well from all over campus. I'm just hoping I can get the full resolution and can do it headless with just a desktop with no monitor and my old GTS 450 in it. Almost definitely not good enough lag-wise for gaming though.
Remote Desktop?
How about just running a remote desktop like Splashtop and using it like a windows tablet.
Try and get the fastest wireless connection you can setup and it should work pretty reasonably fast as a remote desktop.

Dangit. Well at least that's what I was looking for. Do you think it might be possible to find a cable that could take an HDMI and put it to USB micro? Or perhaps Mini Display Port?

I need it to be wired. Doing gaming via wireless is really laggy. Basically I'm trying to use my tablet as a 1600p monitor for gaming. Wireless would cause too much latency. I'll look into JUMP desktop and Remote desktop to see if the pressure sensitivity can work for drawing.

From far enough away I should be able to make out what's going on my tablet without grain and just see the polygons. Making the most of Anti Aliasing.

Are you going to be gaming on the 10" screen at your desk, or you want it as a portability option? To play while you're connected to the school LAN from across campus?

You do realize that when your as far away from your monitor as you should be, that dpi is pointless? Its the same reason why only really huge tvs need 4k.

Wired. I want to take the output of my graphics card and put it into the 10" screen. While playing across a range would be sweet, there's only a few devices that Iknow that can do that wirelessly, and that's because they have TEGRA 4 chips but they don't have high enough resolution. Doing a wired connection means that the tablet doesn't die from power drain and has direct reception from the graphics card.

Yes, I do realize. I have eyes. However, your questions don't really help. I'm trying to get the output of a graphics card and use my tablet as the monitor. IT's not a matter of pointless DPI, it's a matter of using a table as a display for high end graphics.
The reason for the 10 inch real estate is to cut down on space as well as the effect of tunnel vision. Having 2560x1600 pixels in a smaller real estate enables me to see everything on screen in one view instead of having to shift my gaze momentairly to glance the corners.
I used to think that too. But I saw data on what DPI humans could perceive at a given distance. It's definitely way higher than I thought at 1-2 feet. We still have a ways to go past 300 DPI, regardless of what Apple might say about Retina.

As far as I know, there is no native solution to make the tablet act like a regular display that accepts input, you could try taking it apart and hack something together I suppose. To the best of my knowledge, sitting the recommended distance from 27 inch monitor let's you see all of it in one view easily. Basically unless you really just want to have a tiny tablet monitor for the sake of having it, there really isn't a reason. I could definitely get behind having a cheapo wacom slate tho lol.

Well it's been a while. I manged to get the tablet to work up to 40 frames using the USB to Micro cable However this is using a third party app and it's laggy as all heck when it comes to gaming (Display wise it is pretty, so movies are a go-go). It does however work great for non intensive things like Office or internet browsing.
I'm trying to figure out if there's a way to create a driver that will enable me to have it preform the way I want (by reversing the input of the HDMI to Micro USB)

The upcoming Tab S3 is the first tablet that I've seen that seems like it would be a good replacement / upgrade for the Note 10.1 2014.
Here are some PROs and CONs as I see it:
PRO:
- battery life
- processor
- "HDR"
- USB-C
- Fingerprint Sensor
- Low weight
- look / feel
- magnetic keyboard option
- 4096 levels pressure sensitivity
- larger rubberized s-pen
CON:
- portrait button orientation
- price
- pen does not fit inside tablet
- pen doesn't have eraser (not important for most, but leaves me using old pens that don't take advantage of the heightened pressure sensitivity)
- Big one: early reviews suggest s-pen input lag
The main con for me is really that custom ROMs have made my Note snappy enough that I don't feel like I really need to upgrade (aside from my aging battery life). With 7.1.1 ROMS (currently on LiquidDeath, but Lineage is great, too) I finally don't get s-pen lag when drawing or writing and would be frustrated to have to deal with that again.
I don't think I can justify the expense right now, but if I had the cash this would seem like a solid choice. Opinions?
I agree with everything you've listed.
I was a bit worried about losing screen size so I calculated some stuff.
Note: 8.6 x 5.4in - 46.44 sq in
Tab: 7.8 x 5.8in - 45.24 sq in
The tab loses a bit of length but gains it back in width. Not going to be as big for widescreen movies and such but hopefully not too bad.
I'm also not a fan of the reduced PPI but I'm going to Best Buy sometime to compare.
The pen not fitting inside is a big issue since it's easy for me to lose them (and the replacement is $60). I would probably put something on its belt clip to keep it attached to me.
However, the pen's gained size may feel nicer in the hand and make it more difficult to lose.
We'll get ROMs eventually. Except if the bootloader is tied down like on the S7 (is it?)
IMO it has 3 big cons not listed here.
Aspect ratio. It's bad for for android. Most iOS apps are optimized for 4:3, so it's a good fit for iPad. Most android apps actually look bad on 4:3 (used Mi tab, apps didn't look good). 4:3 is bad for media consumption. Websites are optimized for widescreen.
Lack of MHL is a big con for me too. I frequently use my tablet as my portable computer (booting linux) or portable media center. I don't find wireless a good alternative (things like chromecast), too much input lag and requires live Internet connection most of the times.
The smaller battery. Sure Note 10.1 has a more power hungry screen and SoC but the difference in battery capacity is so great that with a power efficient rom you always get better autonomy with Note 10.1

Does it not support DisplayPort over USB-C? If not, on Reddit there is a guy with a solution that works for the pixel, which also doesn't support DP over USB-C and that may work. Can't post the link since I'm still new but you can google "google pixel is wired output possible" to find the post.
Went to Best Buy recently and tried it. Couldn't do much since it was locked in demo mode (so I couldn't see how badly apps handle the 4:3 screen) but it seemed like a nice device.
Have you guys seen the Chromebook Plus/Pro? It's a Samsung Chromebook with an Spen, Android app support, and it folds into a tablet. It supports DP over USB-C. Downside is no button on pen. Might be a better fit if you are using the tablet as a portable computer and it will run Linux even better than the tab.

I think only S8 supports video output over usb C at this point. Display output over usb 3 (as per the reddit page) is buggy at best. Tried it to one of my laptops, it's good for quick work, I wouldn't trust it for real work.
Chrome book plus is better for work. But an ultrabook is even better.
It's very bad as a tablet though. I've found out that the further away we are from 500 grams / 1 lbr mark the less people use the said device as a tablet. There is a reason , most books do not weigh more than 1lbr for easier reading. A tablet plays a similar role, the heavier it is the more unusable. Note 10.1 2014 is on the heavy side (would prefer if it had 100 less grams) but still very usable. 1KG tablet/laptops are not though. You may make the occasional tablet use, but no way you get it in the couch for media viewing or reading, or on a trip as a handheld, pretty much why the 2in1 idea never flew (people find that they don't use them as tablets so prefer to go the ultrabook route all the way).
