Should I buy the Kindle Fire HD 8.9? - 8.9" Kindle Fire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys.
I'm looking for a new tablet with a 1080p display. All the ones I had seen were 10"+, which is a tad too big for me. I like the idea of a smaller screen but keeping the high res.
My question is, after browsing through the Dev section and not seeing too many ROMs and in the Q&A there are a lot of issue threads, should I buy this tablet? How easy is it to flash stock or something to that accord if its bricked/ messed up? If any of you guys can give honest opinions, should I buy this tablet?
Thank you for your time.
-Riku

99% of the issues in the Q&A thread are due to the users' inability to pay attention and/or follow instructions. If you can't do that, then you should probably look somewhere else (the fact that you would ask that question, raises some red flags IMO).
The 2nd generation Kindle Fires were never intended to run custom ROMs. As a matter of fact, Amazon boasted that it could never be done. Considering that, I'd say we have quite a bit of development going for our devices. Our kernel is built from the ground up with a considerable amount of reverse engineering involved...and it's still under development. If you want an inexpensive tablet where everything works and has 100% functionality with no bugs whatsoever...you should probably look somewhere else.
However, if you want a powerful tablet with great value and you don't mind putting up with minor little annoyances while development grows AND you can pay attention & follow instructions, then this might be the tablet for you. No guarantees though.

I know what I am doing, mostly, so I can pretty much fix minor to bad bugs. I am considering this and the Note 8.0. I'm paranoid about specs so the full HD screen is a plus. Having trouble deciding though.

I guess it all depends on what you are looking for. You can get the KFHD8.9 for less, but the Note 8 has better specs. I'm not sure if you would find the same level of support in Note 8 forums that you would with the 2nd generation Kindle Fire forums. One thing's for sure though...they don't have Hashcode. <-- that's a done deal in my opinion

@soupmagnet
Wow, Hashcode knows his 'Droid. My only two things stopping me is the lack of a pressure sensitive pen and no AOSP/AOSPA. Do you think its possible to port/ build either?
EDIT: just seen that there is a PA port in progress.

if you use it for basic activities and bigscreen for reading, you may enjoy it.

See, I wouldn't actually use any of the Amazon services, I would try and get it as stock looking as possible. I also want to play N.O.V.A 3 and others.

I'm now having root 8.9 LTE and playing NFSMW with no problem. Just download the APK and data then install

Some questions about the Desire

Hey,
I'm in need of a new phone, so I googled a bit and found a list of the and the 15 best mobile phones in the world and the first was the Desire, and I have some questions about it:
1. Is it really the best phone (in term of hardware.. not the design because its obvious that it isnt the best), why?
2. Does it still have the Multitouch problem of the Nexus? Does it bother in daily use?
3. Does it have limited space to install apps? How much? Why do they do that?
4. I saw a video of the Incredible connected to the TV, can the Desire do the same?
5. Does it have sensors like the iphone has for games?
I'm asking those questions because the phone that i will buy is going to stay with me for ~4 years so i want it to be good for me.
I will use it for everything - calling,videos,music,gaming,browsing..
any reply? I need help so i can choose

No there shouldn't be any difference. They are the exact same phone minus a few small differences.
Pretty sure you will run out of space. I have maybe 2 new 3d games and a few other basic apps and I am already out of space.
But the phone is great, although like every phone, it has it's flaws. You should read the forum as all these topics are discussed in detail.
The more I read about the phone the less i want it! according to this forum its full of flaws/bugs.
But then I read the "Is the Desire actually any good?" thread and lots of replies were very positive so I hope i will have the same feeling when I will get mine.

Reading forums for information is good. But don't base your decision on forum users.
Consider this: If you think there's nothing wrong with your phone, you wouldn't come here to start a thread saying "Hey, my phone is awesome! There's nothing wrong with it!"
So, forum threads are generally going to be negative. I started a thread on flaws & annoyances. But I love the device. I think it's the best I've ever owned.
Therefore, check out the specs page, read the manual, read reviews, and watch video reviews. Then make your own decision.

No tv-out for Desire.
It looks like the Incredible uses the Micro USB port to charge and connect to the TV. Could the Desire be the same?

will Android ever be complete?

Not trying to be a jerk, this is a sincere question. I really like my Tilt2 and don't want to get a newer phone with Droid on it. My phone is really, imo, built solid and has almost never failed to perform. I know it's a little heavy, but that doesn't bother me. I really would love to have a fully functional Droid that I could use. Mainly because I really don't like Apple and won't get an Iphone, even though I think the I-4 is a cool phone. Is there anything I can do as a forum member to help get this project further along? I was wondering if we could all maybe tackle 1 thing each and help out. Might not be anything I can do, but I'm willing to help if I can.

I don't think anyone can be sure that Android will ever be finished. The developers have done much for this device, but with the HD2 finally able to boot the Linux kernel, I think most of the support we had will move towards getting Android on better, newer, and more capable devices like the HD2. In addition, most of the remaining problems with getting Android completely working are the ones that were very difficult to begin with. Things like initializing hardware correctly, and figuring out how to get the various parts of the device to talk to each other. I'm honestly kind of doubtful that we will see more development with Android on the Pro2, since AFAIK only one person is working on it (though I hope I'm wrong).
it seemed at first that android for the touch pro would never work but now the only thing that doesnt work is the camera. maybe the touch pro 2 will get to that level some day. who knows.
So from what I gathered, the Tilt 2 won't be having any further development to work with Android? I also still have my Fuze. Is that development continuing? If so, maybe I will keep my Fuze instead of selling it and use it to test with Android?
By the way, what is the real name for the Tilt 2? Is it Rhodium or ?
Thanks guys, this place really ROXS!
I await your replies!

I'm not sure what you mean by complete. New builds are released all the time, etc. If you mean all hardware functioning, here is the list from Reefer's thread:
NOT WORKING IN THIS BUILD:
BT
Sound (in call mic and earpiece work, no ringtones or music)
Camera
Opengles: using software rendering for the time being.
Battery Meter
For sound, look here: http://www.ppcgeeks.com/forums/showthread.php?t=121743
One guy has made an NDISwrapper for Android...amazing.
For HW3D, look here: http://www.ppcgeeks.com/forums/showthread.php?t=125379
Battery Meter is working very well. It's not accurate (seems like it's 10-15% off) but it shows low, which means you can get charged up in time with no problems. I also recall phhusson saying this WILL be 100% some day, it's just very tedious and time consuming, and everyone is more concerned with making things run better and on more hardware.
In other words, development is still very much active and some very smart people are working on these problems. I believe Mr. Steve Ballmer said it best here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8zEQhhaJsU4
If you're patient, more of the pieces will come together soon enough and Android for our device will be more complete (relatively speaking). For the record, I'm very content with the state of things. All development from here is just icing on the cake
Mods, if I'm not supposed to link to outside forums, just delete them and/or let me know. That's just where the more technical info is.
i thought sound was fixed already today there was a new build for rhodium?.
i think sound just got added but not for music. I think they upgraded the sound in the earpiece and speaker works now.

This is also incorrect. TP2 development is moving along faster now than it has been in a while. Not everyone wants a HD2 just beacuse it can boot android. Sure it has a fancy screen but no hardware keyboard, so i'm not even considering it as an option for a new device. Also, for future reference there are quite a few more than just one person working on this...
Also, define finished? The OS itself is in constant development. Will Android itself ever be finished? I hope not.

ok, point taken. When will Android ever be fully functional on the Tilt 2 phone?
Now! Then! No, Then! When it's done. This isn't a native OS, don't go in expecting perfection. Go in expecting nothing and be amazed with every update. The alternative is to port it yourself. Good luck with that.

My initial question was pretty point blank. Don't expect perfection, just would like full functionality on my phone because I like the AnDroid OS. The question was never meant to be a gripe, not sure why it struck a chord with you. I don't know how to port it, so luck is not needed. Thanks anyway

Are you serious?!?! What you are asking is very disrespectful because You obviously haven't even read the FAQ/WIKI because it states:
5) When will the next release be out? I can't wait to get more features on my phone!
The next release will be out when the developers are able to get it ready. They are contributing their time for free and can't work on it full time. If you want to help speed development, make a donation to one of the main developers to help encourage them, don't pester them by asking a million times when the next release will be out when they won't know until it is ready.
hope this helps clear things up.

You might as well wait a few months, there will be a bigger, better, brighter android (as we have seen the last few months) - if you can't wait, the HD2 is very nice.

you didn't have a clue mmh ? what where you thinking ? that those people are well paid for doing it, and because of that your in position to come here and whine ?
and it's nothing about wearing hearts on sleeves, since it's only repeating the obvious like breaking in open doors.
however, I have some question :
Is it possible to have a feedback from some developer if it is a question of money to make things go further. if yes, what would it be approximately.
because, it is nice to encourage people to donate, but I didn't read anywhere from some person actually working on the project that it is indeed a question of money.
maybe this would be the first thing to find out ? from the developers side, is there anything that "non-aware" people can make to get things go further ?

giving up on this device

im giving up on this optimus lte, im selling it, or trading for a galaxy nexus,
the dev community seems slow, and not any CUSTOM roms, just de-bloated stock roms, there isnt even a real promise of ICS, just a TBD... and i just feel i like the nexus overall better then this anyways, to much hassle over rom flashing and potential corrupting of the filesystem which cause's softbricks and me alot of headaches....
the nexus just seems so much more custom rom friendly
Thanks for letting us all know. I'll alert high command of the situation.
was a smarta$$ reply really needed... typical tho, shoulda been expected from a newbie to the forum...
You were mistaken in thinking anyone here cares. What does making this thread accomplish? Are you trying to make other people give up too? I just don't see the point in posting this. You're just going to get negative replies from Nitro HD fans. And it's not like you've contributed anything, either.
why the need for bashing eh ?
does it make you feel better??
the point was to just state that this particular device was no longer of interest to me, and for some that have maybe read my issues with device and the fact that there is not many that are dev'ing for the device, that maybe some would reconsider getting one, not everyone needs 100% POSITIVE loyal fan love bs, some would love to hear and see the truth about issues and such as they wouldnt want to be stuck with something that would cause them problems in the future,
and for another " youve not contributed anything either " comment... for your personal information, im learning android coding, apps, and os information right now, ive been to college for video game design and development and web design... and its people like you that make me not want to contribute anything.. negative remarks, rude comments, and overall bashing of a person is not helpful, nice, or deserved...
so maybe in the future... YOU should think first before typing and learn that everyone starts somewhere... and stuff like this, makes me not want to contribute,...
anyways, point in case, im trading my lg-p930 tonight with my friend for his galaxy nexus, im sure ill be happier with it as ill be able to code for it and learn to dev alot easier with an official google branded device...
if you dont like this thread... DO YOURSELF A FAVOUR... DONT POST IN IT
BTW, I've been around in this forum for a while now, since early days of htc's and win mobile rom cooking, ive made some of my very own personal winmo roms for my htc diamond and previous oldies,
and i do know what im doing with this stuff as its been a sort of hobby for me to mess with stuff and not keep it stock, something always has to be messed with in my collection, and all i was basically trying to state was that i gave up on this device for learning to dev with, ok,

Now why does my post count matter? This is my last post in this thread as it should probably be deleted by a mod anyway. Have fun with your Nexus, nobody will miss you.

I'll wait for HTC X One and Samsung Skyrocket HD to come out then select one. I don't think I'll stick with Nitro even if ICS released tomorrow...I need my compass and Skullcandy earphones!
thanks [email protected] for some understanding...
if it wasnt for the fact the LG has put me thru so much BS, i might be happy with its hardware, but is just not as friendly as a HTC or Samsung....
htc's and samsung's i know i can recover from super easy, not have a bunch of hassle and be able to come and go quick and simple from any type of custom rom i want...
i still havent figured out if this device has a fastboot mode or anything other then recovery and download mode... ive wanted to find out how to mess with ics... but it refuses to let it boot, and where as the nexus or even my old atrix for that matter have ics, my friends gs2 has ics, and our device has been " promised " ics... but ive heard tell of lg not holding up there end of the bargain on some devices..
might also help if LG was a lil more DEV friendly with their devices as well...
HTC even gives the chance to unlock your bootloader just for that purpose
now i know that the lg p930 does have an unlocked boot loader, but the filesystem seems to not be user friendly to CWM
which makes it difficult for some work to get done if you happen to make mistakes in code or whatever
Bye bye

You've definitely proven that you have the attention span of a 12 year old. We all know about one developers' attempt to make ICS available, yet is unable to do so as he is nearly the only developer that works with LG devices. In other words we won't get an ICS ROM any time soon, as he is putting focus into other LG devices. Now if you also notice, he is working on a ROM for the AT&T Nitro HD, not the Bell Optimus LTE. Where does that leave us Bell users? Dumping the phone up on for-sale websites in attempt to recoup what we lost after LG screwed us with the release of the 4X. Yes, that's right, LG released their quad core phone with ICS on it... hmm...
Now you may love the IPS LCD that this phone offers. That's all fine and dandy, but when you have a $500 device in your hands, you'd expect to have some manufacturer and developer support behind it. One developer and a lack of initiative from LG to release the update has pissed off quite a few of us. We're already into March (Q2) and ICS has not been released as LG stated. As tn stated, LG devices and LG themselves are not friendly to the developer community.

I have a Bell Optimus LTE using kernelpanics rom and I have had no issues to speak of. So I'm confident that the CM9 release for the nitro (whenever it ends up releasing) will work on my phone.
I must say that LG's marketing is 2 blame in this poor situation. It's been 1M pieces sold in 2 month BUT it could be 3M to 5M if they have it in shops in india, china, europe and c.i.s.
P880 4X HD is gonna be available only in summer, way too long to wait. LG is digging hole for themselves, they give up market share to samsung Nexus and Note and HTC, & Xperia S
Nitro is a perfect piece of android, way better then Nexuses & other amoled s*1t and poor LG makes nothing to spread its popularity
i agree whole heartedly, the lg p930 is amazing hardware, with crap all for proper dev support and lg's track record does not help them in this matter at all...
well... this phone is as stable as an iphone !
coming from a galaxy kingdom " S S2 note" i can honestly say i always used to flash custom ROMs for a couple of hours but at the end of the day when i go to sleep i have the original one again for stability most of all
at least for the first time in so long i don't waste hours on flashing and restoring data and finding bugs and so on ..... till it end up restoring my backed up original rom and settings !
sure custom roms have their ups and downs but..... the phone is stable guys !
it doesn't have the crappy touchwiz or the need of lagfix ... etc
deploating fixed the lag and the battery..... what else do i want ?! since its not sense UI from HTC nor MIUI or even a worthy and heavy tweaking then i really cant see the need for Devs or to flash our phones !
but thats just me... someone enjoying one of the best screen there is on the rarest high end phone with a quality specs
BTW: anyone else tried playing MKV on this phone and galaxy note ?
trust me u will be surprised
is your lg gets really HOT when using gps and car charging?
or playing game and car charging? the freaking phone get really hot and it would STOP charging! you know you will run out of battery cus the freaking phone stop charging when it' HOT!
so this lg is not reliable! i switched back to my old phone samsung skyrocket! no, my skyrocket never get hot like this.

First off, how does me saying, basically, "stop *****ing and be patient," make me have any sort of lack of an attention span? We're all frustrated about this phone but most people who frequent here have seen enough *****ing. It's our own damn faults for buying this phone anyway. However, the phone goes a long way when you wipe the internal storage and let the battery break in. It's pretty snappy with GO Launcher and I get a full day of use now. The only problem is the lack of devs, but we've heard this a million times now. Just 21 more months to go... hopefully we'll get ICS by then.

probably portable charger doesnt output that much power, that why it' doesnt overheat.
but when i using car charging, the LG does overheat. i also have samsung skyrocket, it never hot like that.

[Q] Where are the custom ROMs???

I was so beyond elated when I got my Galaxy Note 8 (N5110) last night... couldn't want to flash this puppy and ROM it with some Cyanogen loveliness; but to my incredible surprise, I can't find any custom ROMs that don't have the Touch Wiz crap on it. WTH? This tablet was highly rated and I know it's not abscure so I'm wondering why there's so little development on this little wonderous machine. Ideas? Links that I've missed? Winning lottery numbers? All are welcome.
instead of asking what are others plan on doibg for your tablet wouldn't it be morw productive to ask and learn how to do it yourself?
it seems rather rude to ask for someone else to donate their free time with no compensation.

There's already a few threads like this, so not sure there's a point to another one. Either way, there is CivX custom rom and kernel, but yes it's based on stock TW. Emwno is working on a cm10.1 port too, and beanstown was supposed to develop a custom rom but that has now been delayed. Hopefully he will do it though at some point in the future. Aside from that not many devs seem to have the device which is a shame because the Note 8 rocks.
nothing more annoying on XDA then someone complaining about the lack of free software...quick whining, and learn how to do it yourself, so you can spend endless hours of YOUR personal life creating something that people can post complaints about, request things that you dont put in the rom, and just generally expect you to spend all of your free time upgrading, and improving for them every time they want something..
I agree with you it does rock. Just xame from a Lenovo A2109 where there was a LARGE dev community but no support for Mac users. Thought for sure there would be a crap load of devs here given the Samsung brand and its answer to the iPad mini. Personally, I think its much getter then the mini even though I'm a Mac girl... note: not an Apple fangirl... just a best in class user.
Anyway, thanks for telling me what to look for and which developers to keep and eye out for. Its painful to read post after post and subsequently page after page trying to find answers to my questions. I do appreciate it.

First and foremost, this post wasn't about *****ing... it was asking a question and expressing puzzlement. Second of all, I asked no one to DO anything or develop anything for "my device". You added nothing useful or enlightening so who's the one *****ing now? Hint: it's not me!

For every ROM that has worked for me, I have donated monetarily. For one device, I actually BOUGHT a unit for development. I've been on this board for several years and have never asked for anything except answers to my questions.
Second of all, I'm a web designer/developer who donates LOTS of time to those who don't know or ask for help. I don't ask for compensation; I ask for them to carry the info forward. It seems rather rude for you to assume and judge rather then ask.

"puzzlement"? what are you puzzled about?
You've been a member here for SIX years; you know where the dev section is in this thread; the roms that are there are what we have at this point..
dont try to "veil" your complaint about so "little development" by saying you weren't complaining, just "asking a question"
We lose enough fantastic developers here when people start threads like this, so please don't encourage the few folks that are dev'ing for this device to leave as well..
end of discussion
Gentlemen please stop making personal attacks.
I am sure she knows where is the place to find a custom rom although she doesn't mean this.
So if there is nothing constructive to add in this thread then just don't post.
Thank you.

maybe I just misread your enthusiasm for the new tablet as cracking the whip on those hard working guys who do what thwy do and ask for norhing back. so If I mistook you excitement as a demand then I apologize.
the gnote 10.1 took a good while to get some dev work on it. for a good while all we had was root, which really wasn't bad at all. It's still not as active as say the s4 or gn2 development, but it still looks like qualiry work. I'd suppose it wouldn't be too hard to port a rom over, but then again what do I know, I ain't no dev.

I was under the impression you have to keep a lot of the Touch Wiz to keep the pen enabled. Otherwise it's just a generic 8" android tablet.
Thank you... I appreciate that; very much.

I was very pleased that rooting was so easy. I had to unlock the bootloader in the HTC was a flippin' pain in the arse so I was THRILLED to learn we didn't have to do that on the Samsung. So, clearly I'm very glad to have root... and have deleted a lot of the Samsung crapware as I'm sure most of us have as well. Though I do have to ask... what is a "gnote"? I had a GTab once which was actually the Viewsonic GTablet. However, I've never heard of the GNote...
I'm not a software/hardware dev either... just web... and so wish I had time to learn. I'd be all over it like a gnat on poop!

Isn't the Touch Wiz on regular non-Note Samsung devices? For example the Galaxy II & III phones? Though I am just guessing as this is my first Samsung Android device.
*smile* Thank you. However, I am a she.

yep, pretty much all samsung devices, except for the nexuses and the s4 developer ed have touch wiz. the big downside of using cm or aokp is that you'll lose pressure sensitivity with your pen (or at least that's how it was a few months ago and i haven't really check up on it).
I think its fine the way it is....

Will there be any development for the pixel c?

I know this is a question no one can answer at this point, but what do you guys think? Will there be at least as much development for this device as compared to the nexus tablets?
I've never owned an android tablet before, and was waiting for this opportunity, but if there will be very little development, i don't see the point of getting the pixel c.
Any thoughts?
Where do I start?
1. A question does not belong in general
2. Asking this sort of question is disrespectful
If you want development then pay someone to develop for you. Or take a crack at it yourself.
For all we know some badass dev is working on a badass rom for us in the background.

1. Thought i is for general. If it is not the case I would like to ask a mod to move it to the appropriate place.
2. How is this even remotely disrespectful? This is a general question, directed towards no one specific, and not being judgmental what so ever.

Your questions is about the equivalent of asking a a dev when there will be an ETA for an update to his/her rom. Its almost like an unspoken rule, that Googles devices will be getting custom roms, and some of the BEST ones at that. I am sure the pixel line up will be just like the nexus when it comes to having a great development community.
@Jhonys I think people are being a little harsh to you, man. It's a legitimate question that I have been wondering myself. There has been a lot of negativity towards the Pixel C. There are a lot of people on here complaining about issues with the Wifi and touchscreen. Also, it hasn't been getting great reviews. I don't know how I feel about the reviews because, save for PC Mag, all of the reviews just poopoo the fact that it isn't great for productivity. I understand that it is more focused on productivity than general tablet use, but that doesn't mean it isn't an absolutely fantastic tablet. I just use mine to read and play games while I poop, as well as the occasional in-flight entertainment. I think it is by far the best Android tablet for my usage scenario and I really want there to be a large community for it. Regarding ROM development, I know that @BeansTown106, who makes the absolutely fantastic Pure Nexus ROM's, has said in these forums that he plans on getting a Pixel C and developing for it. I am really looking forward to his ROM. I also hope TWRP releases a recovery soon and we can get a basic root going.

Thanks for your answer. I too think it's a legitimate question and was quite surprised with the attitude, but that doesn't really matter atm.
The thing is I really don't want to get a tablet which will die slowly because of lack of development. I already did that mistake twice with my smartphones (most recently the HTC m9 which has 2 great AOSP roms but that's about it). Just got the nexus 6p for that reason exactly and want the same with a tablet.
Regarding the usage, I'm also not looking for a productivity tablet. More to read pdf books (student), and watching movies while flying (which I do quite a bit). How do you find its performance? Does it lag or stutters when you try to watch full HD movies or browsing the web etc? All the reviews I've seen so far focus more on the productivity aspect of it.
Thanks again :good:

Performance wise, it has been a dream for me. I have streamed some high bitrate 1080p x264 movies over my wireless network using Kodi 15.2 and it was smooth as silk. Web pages scroll just as smoothly or smoother than on my Nexus 6P or when I had my Nexus 9. I have some issues with the design of the tablet, namely the placement of the speakers and front facing camera, but otherwise, it is by far the best tablet I have ever owned.
I'm assuming it won't be long before there is a full linux distro running on this - as well as a way to run chrome. Hard to be sure if or when though - its not something to _expect_ when making a purchase now...

This post single handedly pushed me into hitting the "submit order" button on the Pixel C. Had it in my cart for two weeks... was just waiting for a sign. Thanks man, if it does half of what it did for my Nexus 6 I am a happy person.
