Does ip5 require a tethering plan with your carrier to be able to do Bluetooth tethering?
Sent from my Nexus 7

I had tethering on my ip5 with my grandfathered unlimited data plan from at&t... Now i have that same grandfathered plan on my galaxy s4 and i tether through wifi all the time, but i can't get it to work through Bluetooth.

I've been trying to BT tether on my S3 and it pairs but it won't stay connected. It just connects for less than a second.

BT tethering sucks up much less battery than wifi tethering? (dont tether much, but this would be useful to know)

Yes, low power bluetooth would waste much less battery to both the tablet and the phone. Also with Bluetooth it wouldn't broadcast a wireless SSID which is better when I'm around other people looking for internet.

Aren't there speed issues with Bluetooth? Anyone know the max speed rate?
Update
Bluetooth is limited to 1.5mbps without the BT3.0 HS speed boost, which... uses BT to just establish an AdHoc WiFi network to do the dirty lifting.
So not sure if using Bluetooth is even lower powered if it activates both radios, unless, of course, you're fine using 1.5mbps.
I'm no expert in the dark arts of Bluetooth spec, but I'm pretty sure how this works and the article I just found kinda confirms that. Doesnt BT4 further the use of WiFi radios for faster speeds? Bluetooth just becomes the authentication method vs a traditional SSID and password. Bluetooth passes the needed info so the other device can find it.
I've been using WiFi tethering on my Nexus Galaxy and N7 with no problem. Range is also better. So I crank up 4G, WiFi tethering, and plug it into a wall.

Yes. Doesn't it redirect ?

I'm not going to give you a 100% sure answer but here's my interpretation.
The built in wifi tether on CM or AOSP ROMs should be just as traceable as using Wifi Tether as in, they could monitor your data usage and see large usage or large spikes in data flow, however this is highly unlikely unless you're one of those people that use 30GB a month.
From what I've seen with the built in wifi tether for the stock Verizon LTE GN when you click turn on the hotspot it goes through a validation / verification thing in which it communicates with Verizon and starts some log of data, when you turn it off it appears to then give that information back to Verizon to say the connection is closed. As the built in one on custom roms doesn't do this it should be just as in the clear as wifi tether.
Again, not 100% sure but I'm just using built in on CM these days.
It doesn't even have to be spikes in data.. they can see what type of device the data is being sent to/from. However, they never said a thing when I tethered my Thunderbolt. The spikes in data is what causes them to investigate.

Short Answer: They could, but won't unless you become a problem for them.
Long Answer: Tethering goes through the same APN as cellular usage, which is why they have the phone-home feature on stock. They really can't tell without packet sniffing to figure out specifically what usage came from what device. That is a lot of work, but even more importantly, is that they need a man-in-the-loop to 1) maintain the automated systems. 2) deal with customer service issues arising from people that have been billed for off-plan usage.
If you don't know why #2 is so important, think about how much it costs when an angry customer calls in and takes up and hour of a rep and his manager's time. You could be looking at $20 of wages wasted trying to wrange $10-20 out of a customer. That's in addition to building the servers to handle the data, and the network infrastructure to sniff the packets.
It's just not worth it, unless someone is downing 20GB on 3G, or 50GB on LTE. It's even less worth it now that everyone is moving away from unlimted data plans (for now, just like voice, it will come back when the technology outpaces the demand). Why sniff packets, when the network hogs will just roll into overage charges anyway? Expect the tethering plans to dissappear in the next few years.

[Q] Using my phone to redirect wifi

Hey guys. I need ideas on how this would work. I'm staying at a hotel this weekend with wifi where you need to accept the terms of use before you can actually access the internet. I have stayed here before and tried using Xbox live through the wifi. It does not work because I must accept these terms. Would I be able to connect to the wifi through my phone, accept the terms of use, and then direct the wifi through my phone to the Xbox? Tether is a no go because the area has horrible coverage. Any ideas would be awesome. Thanks!

Cant you just use the XBOX browser to accept the terms and conditions and then use the wifi from your XBOX directly?
Xbox does not allow you to browse the web like the ps3 does. But thanks for the suggestion!

With a laptop you could join the wireless network then right click the network adaptor and share it with the ethernet card. From then on, ethernet from the laptop to the xbox.
You shouldn't need a cross over cable as almost all network cards are smart enough to figure things out themselves these days.

Seems easy enough. Thanks I'll try that.

That'd be the best bet here. Don't think the phone can help much in this situation.

[Q] Using the Verizon Nexus to tether.

Has anyone used their VZN Gnex to tether to their laptop? I was just curious to how well it worked, if the phone got super hot, etc. Is it worth getting? Just explain your opinion on Gnex tethering if you will. Thanks
I should also add that I will be using the VZN mobile hotspot data package.
I have used my Gnex to tether my laptop and my friends laptops (Macs and PCs). The speed is okay. I did a speedtest.net run on it and it was around 10mbps, about the speed of any average, home wifi connection (4g). It drains the battery fairly quickly in my opinion, so only if I am without Wifi and I need to use the computer that absolutely required data connection (that my phone couldn't do), I would use it in that situation. Otherwise I would just always use wifi if I needed to use my computer. There is no problems with it though. The phone doesn't get hot, slow or buggy.I would say if you're in areas where you'd like to use your computer, but don't have wifi regularly, then get it. If not, just carry your phone around with you and use that, it's a mini laptop!
Well, getting back into school and my job requiring me to travel a lot, I planned on doing most of my classes online. Everywhere we go, i have great signal and hopefully this will be my solution to getting my coursework done before I get home. Thanks.
While not the CDMA version, I have used my GN for this and it worked flawlessly with my Wi-Fi-only tablet.
I appreciate the input so far. Anyone that reads this, I ask to write your opinion and experience using your GNex has a mobile hot spot. Preferably the CDMA version. Thanks again.

I've used my VZW nexus to tether (using Android Wifi Tether app) occasionally, mostly using 3G, and it works like a charm.
I use it almost daily with no issues. Speeds rival what I get on the handset, but I'm also running a custom ROM and not paying to use Verizon's Hotspot Service.
I use roughly 10 gigs a month, half of it is via tether. I don't have issues with heat. I will say that if you're using WiFi Tether on LTE and having a phone conversation on a BT headset, the charger can't keep up with power consumption. Small price to pay for awesomeness.
Thanks for the input so much guys! So far nothing negative. I'll definitely have to put this to use then!

[Q] Tablet: Wifi or Carrier?

If you plan to get a tablet, would you get one with a cellular network, or one only suited for wifi?
I think it sounds silly to spend cash for a 'tablet line', but to each their own.
Stories/experiences welcome.
I bought the tab 10.1 wifi only... if I am ever without wifi access (which is rare) I just use my nexus to wifi tether.. saves money and works great

Ditto
Wifi, if you ever need data access just tether
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
i thought the same initially, get a wifi tablet and tether to phone if needed
BUT wifi tether sucks up too much phone battery - and it's such a shame to have an awesome device that you can't use properly
i ended up replacing my TF101 (which was too big for me anyway) with a 3G 7" and got a $5 for 500MB per month sim
I'd rather have my balls chopped off than to buy a carrier tablet. I can see the usefulness for some people that need to be connected all the time but it's just not for me.
I have the GT 10.1 wifi only. I usually have it tethered to my phone. Root > WiFi tether app > win. Screw Verizon, they take a lot of money as it is from me per month. Not giving them extra to add my tablet. Just thank god I still have my unlimited data plan. Cause 4G eats up data like a fat man in a donut shop. I hit 15GB usage the other month.
I bought a unlocked t-mobile galaxy tab 7. rooted and running cm7. i pop in my 30 buck a month prepaid t-mobile sim card when i need to.. works out. but would never sign a contract for a tablet. etc..

agreed...fortunately i don't live in a place where carriers control technology...and also, i don't have gonads
Glad that everyone has reached a consensus. Also, can you use USB tether?
I have the 64GB 3rd generation wifi only iPad and I manage fine tethering when I need it. Even if tethering sucked as bad as some people claim, 500Mb is nowhere being enough data for a tablet.

I tether my WiFi tab using AOKPs built in tethering. I get about 20 mb/s on average over my 4G connection.
My wife even used it when she was out to watch her slingbox with no issues. used about 15GB in 3 days...LOL...gotta love that unlimited..uncapped...4G data.

sounds like one of these things:
you're connected to a crappy router (like an Amped branded router). i have an Asus (NT-N66U) and a Linksys (WRT54G) that doesn't have those wireless problems.
you MAY have a faulty phone. emphasize on MAY.
you're out of range.
the antennas on the router isn't putting out a strong signal anymore because it's dying.
my money is on the wireless router you're running. if its not the hardware of the router itself, then its the crappy firmware on it (which might be remedied by DDWRT or Tomato, which can also boost the signal output in exchange for more heat/shortened lifespan).
Are you using the 5G wireless band (if your router even has it)? I've have nothing but problems using my 5G band on my Galaxy S3 and now my Note II. Like you, it connects and disconnects often, sometimes multiple times a minute.
I switched to the standard wireless band and I no longer have any problems. Honestly don't know if it's my router (Netgear N600) or something with the Samsung phones. The only other device I have that sees the 5G connections is my laptop and I have no problems remaining connected to that.
