Always good to be sure

Hey guys!
Has every body ever checked S4 mini amoled screen in to dark?
The reason why the folowing picture, which was made by 16 sec shutter speed.
Please check your S4 mini's screen and write me your experience.
Why looks like an LCD?

Hi, my s4 mini is in my opinion black.
sorry for asking but does your s4 have a Screen protection on it?
Cu
Snow

I also noticed, that the screen of the i9195 is not really black, means deep black like off. You only see it in very dark environment and it's not as light as an LCD, but it's definitely not completely black. I would have expected an AMOLED to switch the LEDs completely off when triggert with #000000.

The discussion here is getting quite off-topic

[Q] Screen blackness

The Nexus S had a completely black screen - at night black was no different that if it was switched off. My GN appears to have slight screen glow in the backs. However, I thought they were both SAMOLED screens? Presume I am wrong? Can anyone explain?
/R
I noticed the same thing. I just assumed that not all sAMOLED screens are equal, and that the change in resolution could have been a cause. Maybe Samsung wasn't able to perfect it. Just speculation
It is pretty close though.

I was expecting this too and was a little dissapointed, was looking forward to having my night clock on and the only light coming from the screen to be the clock text but the whole screen has a slight glow to it
Same here, I wonder why is it like that. No bragging of true black anymore. Feels like step backwards.

The screen does do true black.
It's just the wallpaper isn't turned to black, it's made very dim.
The "slight glow" is the dim wallpaper if you look carefully.
Hmm, I made own 1x1 black picture for background. Still it isn't true black.

The same here, not nearly as black as my old Galaxy S
The blacks look black as black to me.
Mine seems pretty black. I've only had a Vibrant with SAMOLED before, and I think this is equivalent if not better. Sadly, I've got a small weird green dent on the pixels on the second quadrant though...
I've noticed this too. Definately not as dark as my Galaxy S2 was.
My blacks look as good as my GS2's did to my eye. When you guys open up the app drawer, it's not totally black behind the icons? I can't make out bezel or screen with blacks.
I've also noticed that the blacks aren't as black as on my Galaxy S. The blackness on the GS was even more noticeable since every colour displayed is eye-burstingly vivid. I do miss the true black but at least the general display is nicer on the GN than the GS.

I just used the night display mode on Gentle Alarm.
I put the Galaxy Nexus and Galaxy S2 side-by-side.
The Nexus definitely has a noticeable backlight compared to the S2.

Well the nexus doesn't use any backlight. Which is odd because there is a definite glow, I wonder if some screen tuning can remove it

Nigel Tufnel: It's like, how much more black could this be? and the answer is none. None more black.
I hate black screens I only like white ones....yea i said it!
My screen is as dark as midnight and is peferectly fine with me.
Can people please who say screen is completely black test the clock app in night mode in a perfectly dark place. I have a feeling this is not only in some of the phones but in all. Will contact support to verify this.
I think the black tint on the glass isn't as dark as it was on the nexus s. At least that's how it looks on my gnex.
When the screen is on for an AMOLED display, it's not "true black". If I remember correctly, there's a minimum voltage applied when the screen is on. Otherwise it would draw more power to switch the pixels from fully off to on. In other words, the GN might have some slightly different minimum voltage.

As mentioned earlier, the clock app doesn't use a pure black background. Rather, it uses an dark overlay over your wallpaper.
Also, the default background for apps has been changed to one that isn't pure black

Quality of Note 2 screen, how about your?

Quality of my Note 2 screen is too bad, until there is a newest screen technology but the sharpness and brightness is worse than my NOTE 1 too much, so disappointed. how about your?
Find my screen a total joy to look at, no issues at all, what more can I say?

You have note 1 to compare?, i compared about 5 note 2 from my friends, but there are same result
Yes, acturally the screen of Note II is worst than Note I. Compared 4 times with friends. The wording in Note II is blur.

there is no feedback from samsung about this bug
Ever heard about ClearType?
Now to the real problem.
Turn down your screen brightness.
Go in to a dark room.
Install Screen Filter from Google Play.
Make screen display gray color.
????
nJoy drops like patern on your screen.
Cry.

I have compared it to my sisters and also my brother in law, so yes I can compare.
I still prefer the note 2 screen over the note 1. If its that much of a pisser then get the note 1, simples!!!

My pRon looks great on my Note II..just kidding.
Put your Note 2 display settings to "Natural"...it looks more....well, natural.
Watch the pre-installed Samsung sample movie and tell me the screen is blurred and washed out. It's truly magnificent.
My screen looks perfect, not sure what you are on about to be honest.
I think it's not perfect, but much better than the blurry pentile Note 1. The "natural" setting seems the most......natural indeed, but I would like a setting between "natural" and "normal". Normal is too saturated and natural too much washed out..... Samsung, do you hear me? :highfive:
I give it a tie to Note1.
I see advantages. But Note1 was a nice screen.

I think the OP is right. Today I went to T mobile and finally had a chance to compare my Note 1 to new Note 2, set all settings same, and the result was very dissapointing, the brightness is really bad on Note 2 vs Note 1, colors not as rich as Note 1. I like saturated colors of Amoled screenns. Anybody else has same observation? Please don't tell me that it is better than S3, I don't care about that. Even test from GSM arena put the brightness way behind Note 1. wtf Samsung, why?

if you want a nice screen , keep note 1 and wait for Jelly Bean.
My screen looks beautiful even in a dark room with the lights out and the screen on black or Grey I see no marks

My screen is fine. No issues with brightness at all. I have compared it to my dad's note 1 screen and I would say they are about the same. No noticable difference.
The brightness and sharpness is nowhere near that of my HOX, but it does well enough

white balance comparison between ZL and galaxy s3

I read lots of bad reviews on ZL's LCD (viewing angle, washed out color..etc)
I switched from Galaxy S3 to ZL a week ago. S3 had been a decent phone, smooth, lots of custom roms
(of course everyone uses S3..many developers)
I am a photographer and have duel monitor setting with 2560 x 1440 S-IPS panels, I use Spyder 4 pro to calibrate displays
(very sensitive to accurate and consistent color)
AMOLED was too blue and red is too much red , made my eyes tired
I agree with ppl saying ZL and Z's LCD screen has really poor viewing angle.
My girl friend actually preferred S3 because that reason.
(we often watch youtube video on S3 and it was fine)
So, basically ZL's screen is only visible for me
(cannot share with my girl friend cause of poor viewing angle) and made us very disappointed.
However, assuming viewing angle is alright, I love the accuracy of color on the screen.
White balance is good (we can even calibrate it).
I will let the picture explain. Default setting,
same browser (white background), and same bright level.
sorry for bad English, it's not my first language.
I agree! Give me LCD any day over the over saturated screen that is AMOLED. However I don't get why you included a pic of the back of both phones
Oh actually I didn't mean it.
Tried to delete the 2nd pic but xda didn't allow me(guess because i am new here )
I also wonder if the viewing angle problem is due to its pre applied screen protector.(some films often make viewing angle very limited ) anyone tried to remove the film?
(Of course hopefully sony logo will go away with the film..)

AFAIK the Sony logo is in the glass unlike on the Z where it's on the shatter proof film. I have yet to remove it though

Sony logo does not go away with the pre applied SP. And FWIW, I dont think Sony would put something that makes the screen look worse. I think you mean a privacy SP. They dont make the screen look washed out, just darken them when looked at from an angle.

yeh. I meant that privacy SP.So, I thought Sony used to have decent displays (I had Sony's z-series long ago and it had a great LCD..).
just still do not understand why sony did not put IPS level display on their flagships..
anyhow, I will be OK with that except when the phone is on my desk and want to check a notification without grabbing it.

Screen quality for watching movies vs s4

I currently have an s4 and while I love the amoled screen for its blacks, the s4 has a definite yellow tinge to its screen that makes movies look warm all the time and it really bugs me.
Just wondered if anyone has got both an s4 and a G Pro or has come from an s4 and can compare them and say whether the screen quality of the LG is good enough that you don't miss the deep blacks of the s4 for watching movies.
For me getting rid of the s4 and getting the LG would be a downgrade in many ways (being stuck on 4.1.2, worse camera, slower cpu) but as my main uses for the phone are internet, movies and reading magazines, the bigger screen is tempting but I really just want the best quality screen for watching films -the s4 is almost there but the yellow tint ruins it. That said am worried to give up the great blacks so if anyone can confirm whether it is worth it or not, that would be great!
I know the note 3 is due to be revealed shortly but if it still has amoled my guess is it will also suffer the tint as most previous oleds seen to have done.

I have/had Note 2, s4 and Gpro. Advantage of GP is bigger 1080p screen... so they say. Actually I find the color a little washed out. I enjoyed Note 2 for video much more. S4 is good but too small for me.
Camera is fantastic IMHO on this device. So is speed, no lag, battery is better than s4 (i generally get 11-12 hours which is about 1-2 hours less than my Note 2). Shape makes it easier to gold than note 2.
On specs it's great. Biggest barrier to me is that there is no real development community. I was addicted to XDA on my Note 2. Now I'm. Having withdrawal.
That's why I'm getting the note 3.

I'm pretty sure the GPro is faster than the S4! As for screen, hands down GPro much better than S4.

I found that i liked video better on the lg optimus pro g than the note 2. I will not be getting a note 3. my note 2 had memory issues and I did not even have the insane chip. Pos. unless samsung makes a better quality product I will stick with lg. I would like to also try out the sony xperia z ultra, as that's the best device thus far in my opinion.

S4 mini i9195 and true black amoled

Hi,
I'm wondering if the s4 mini has true black screen values when in total darkness. Mine seems to be a faint glowing gray when showing black colors. On my S4 (the big one) black is truly black, my Note 3 had this as well. Now i'm wondering if this is because at one point my s4 mini's screen was replaced, and i got a bad screen, or has samsung used older amoled screens like the one on the S3? What are your screens like? Also, has the VE (i9195i) edition updated the screen? I can only see the issue when in a totally dark room, under normal light i can't detect it. Would like to know, cause i love reading at night
the s4 mini was one of the first to use a s-stripe technology if i remember correctly and that is superior than the pentile on the other devices you have and most other Samsung phones as of late.. that is except for burn in and degrading. The screen on my 9195 had screen burn in within months of owning it and after the first year had a solid yellow tint permanently on it. Oled degrades fast and maybe that what you're finally noticing?
I do not notice a yellow tint, just a faint glow in the dark, as if there is a backlight active.
I have 2 screens here, from I9192 and I9195 and both don't display true black
Ok, thanks for confirming this. Anyone with a i9195i (ve) here? I reckon they probably used the same screens.

I have rebuilt all models, they use the same(ish) screens. the ribbon cables are different but the displays appear to be the same.
