Tether mod not working - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S 4

Is it just me or do the Wifi Tether mod not work on the GS4? I've tried the Dirty Flash mod and the Treve Mod and neither are working. My Hotspot Counter just keeps getting higher. All I remember from the other phones I've had before were to look for hidden APNs and delete them. But I'm kindnof baffled here. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Sidenote: Just bought the GS4 after reading about Wifi Tether working. My dumb luck, it doesn't work for me. Using the original stock rom with the auto root and twrp.

Nevermind. I figured it out. Edited my xml files and deleted the tether APN altogether. It seemed to pop up 2 tether apns. I tried changing the apn address and that didn't work. So I deleted them and now I'm sailing.

So I went ahead and tried the hotspot all morning. Between the way to work and now, I used 300mb of from my Unlimited Data bank and 2.5mb of my Hotspot Data bank. So it seems to be taking a little bit of data from the Hotspot bank everytime I start the tether and the rest of the data is taken from the Unlimited Data bank. Has anyone else notice anything similar?
Sent from my SGH-M919 using Tapatalk 4 Beta

So I just got done chatting with T-Mobile about the Hotspot usage. Asked them why my Hotspot Data bank of 500mb keeps getting used when I'm not using it. They told me that any data used by my phone itself with the Hotspot turned on will consume data from my Hotspot Data bank. It would explain why I see a jump of 4 or 5mb when using the hacked Hotspot.

So to help myself out... My conclusion to this issue is that Wifi Tethering works fine. There seems ro be some weird issues with it, but I managaed. I'll write it all down later today.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app

So after a couple of days, I have come to the conclusion that Wifi Tethering works, but it can still use up data from your Mobile Hotspot bank. What seems to be happening on my case is... When I have the Hotspot turned on with Sync turned off, no data is used from my Hotspot Bank. Any data usage from my phone itself will cause it to deplete from my Hotspot bank. So in other words, it is kind of useless to me at the moment.
What I am trying at the moment is Wicked rom v5. So far so good. The issue I am having is the known Brightness Bar disappearing at random. But other than that, I installed Wifi Tether and it works fine. Still seems to have the same issue. It'll take a few more days until I can be sure.
But for now. Those that have been asking, I am tethering with Wicked Rom v5 by using the Wifi Tether apk.

How do you even access the xml files from the PC to edit in Notepad++. I've been going crazy trying to find out how because my GS4 only connects to the PC by MTP mode and I cannot get to the folder. Please help or direct me to the correct tread.

WIFI (Hotspot) Tether After ICS Update

Anyone found a work around the wifi tether issue? Rooted phone stock ICS.
If you can use Bluetooth then FoxFi + PDANet Tablet works well between me and my tablet. Not sure if it works with a laptop.
Go into titanium backup, and either freeze or uninstall tethering provision.

I don't know if that was exactly the tethering file i uninstalled with TiB, but that one isn't listed for me.
Actually, if i did remove it then that's probably what lets me use the built in tethering (under wireless settings). No redirect page for me... hm...

Wait, what's issue you're having? Are you trying to get back free hotspot for turning your device into a hotspot, or you can't connect?

Unsure if device management was needed.

I deleted the apk to the HotSpot, and now I have to go all around settings to activate it. Unfortunately, I don't remember the name of that APK, and either I'm blind, or none of them have an obvious name. If someone could point me to it, it would be awesome. I downloaded Mr. X's zipped rom, but can't find it there.
I could go to the market, and download one of those shortcut thingies, but I don't want those, I want the stock one.
Also, FYI, the only thing that has to be frozen/deleted is the Tethering Provision.

Hi All,
I am having a slightly different issue. I'm rooted and have frozen the 'TetheringProvision 1.04.02.TM'.
When I was broadcasting, my computer wouldn't connect to the network. My workaround was to delete the connection in Windows Network Manager and reconnect.
My tethering icon is different than the above screenshots, I have a T-Mobile branded icon.
Now that I'm able to connect, I'm getting a message in my webbrowser to sign up for a tethering plan. I've tried a User-Agent switcher, but that didn't work... anyone have any suggestions?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This is the message:
Turn your Smartphone into a Mobile HotSpot!
Share your smartphone's high-speed internet connection with your laptop, iPad®, iPod®, or any other Wi-Fi enabled device.
it sounds like you did everything right that is weird. What browser do you use chrome? try a different browser first. Even though a different user string should have worked. Maybe they are catching on. Dont forget that all the carriers have people in here as well so they all know what we are doing.
Try using a phone or ipod to connect to your hotspot and see if that works.
I'm having similar issues with mobile hotspot. I have tried freezing and deleting Tether provisioning, device management, and a number of other stock services. However no matter what, the T-Mobile icon always appears when I enable hotspot or wifi tethering and I'm limitted to the stupid WEP access with generated keys.
Anyone have a functional workaround for enabling the ICS hotspot service? currently i'm using FoxFi, but would rather have the real deal
I deleted the tethering provisioning directly from system/app and mine is working fine both the usb tethering n hotspot tethering. I used root explorer to do so
ROM manage has a tethering app. Seems to work fine.
I am running rooted stock ICS and could not get tethering to work by freezing tethering manager. Then I installed the WIFI Tether app (the one made by the Titanium Backup people) and was able to tether via that app. That worked for about an hour and now I am getting the TMO upsell screen even when I try to tether through the WIFI Tether app. Any ideas?
You should freeze/uninstalling TETHERING PROVISION.
It's included in my plan as well and I'm on AT&T. Not sure if it's a Premier thing though, but my data plan came with hotspot as part of it, and it's not the data sharing plan.
When I tried to enable it, it told me to call 611 to activate it.
+1 for foxfi on ATT.
AT&T will force you to give up unlimited data plans to enable this from them and it's another $15 USD / month. I believe the context of the OP is without carrier plan.
If you have no unlimited data and can stomach the $15/mo, more power to you.
Foxfi doesn't work for me but I found a way to get native tethering work on this phone but your phone has to be rooted to do that:
1. First you need to delete TetherProvision.apk system app. Either by root explorer or TB. Removing this might cause a FC when you try to turn Mobile Hotspot on in Settings (happened to me) but keep on reading.
2. Go to Google Play store and install Power Toggle and add the Wifi tether widget to your Homescreen.
3. Boom ^_^.
Excellent! Thank you for finding this.
Or flash 15 toggles from the Development thread. Mobile Hotpot built in + flash light and others
Try doing it with Open security, change the SSID and if you are using Win 7 make sure you select a profile (home, work, public) it will take a few seconds before it will work even though it is connected and assigned an IP. Also try it on something else, it make be your computer and not the phone.
Also, I find it odd that it only shows up as an Ad-Hoc Network? not an actual AP like normal
Hmm, I'm have the same problem with my Nexus 4. I'm with rogers and I used the sim from my Galaxy Nexus in my Nexus 4. Using the built in tethering Wifi and USB works on my Galaxy Nexus, but the on the Nexus 4, devices can connect but no data is transferred even though data is working.
The only thing I can think of is because I'm using the rogers LTE APN on the N4 but the normal APN on the GN.
Could this be caused by the straight talk APN that I am using? I am having he same type of situation. It connects but no data is transferred.
if you tether LTE plan, will you get LTE speeds on the other connecting phones? or just the original host LTE phone
so anyone else have Straight talk and get this to work?
I had the same problem (with T-Mobile), adding "dun" as mayastig suggested did the trick.
Specifically, the APN type for epc.tmobile.com now reads "default,supl,mss,dun".
Sorry to be off the straight talk topic.. don't know about that but I am on the $30 tmob plan.
I just really need to tether maybe twice a month and I can't see spending $15 on that. My question is, of I do it using fox will tmob find out and ban me or something?
ViperOne 4.3 Hotspot problems [SOLVED]
I have upgraded to this Rom and have not found any way to get hotspot working. Is there a different kernal I need to flash or something. I have unlimited and native connects, but no data. Tether with TrevE mod keeps starting with errors and won't create a log file to see the error. Does not broadcast SSID. Really didn't expect to have these problems on a rooted Rom. Any suggestions??
Thanks to Carm01, I was able to compare my default.xml file with the one he posted and found something to try. I believe it was a Tether_Guard setting that was 0 (zero) in the ViperOne Rom and it was a 2 in the version posted by Carm01. I simply used Root Browser to edit the value on my phone and no other changes. Rebooted phone after saving file and BINGO! Working great with the native Hotspot & Hotspot Toggle widget.
Hopefully this can help someone else running ViperOne 4.3 and wants tethering to work.
I'm on Effortless rom and have unlimited tether. Just flash the rom and the SD and tether fix zip. Then, follow the instructions. Go to APN and reset to default and restart your phone. After that, turn on your hotspot and go back to APN and click on the T-mobile Tether APN. Give it a few seconds and it'll automatically switch back to the T-mobile US LTE APN and you should have unlimited tether. You'll have to click on the Tether APN every time you want to tether. This method works for me.
THAT is exactly what the problem is and I cant understand why nobody on this website (and on these similar threads) have no clue about this, all suggesting 50 solutions, none of which work cause tmo already turned OFF their hotspot after 5g.
NONE of these suggestions are actual "hotspots", they just reroute, or mask the tethered data so it's not reported. These "fixes" do not fix the fact tmo turned off their hotspot after 5g tether.
Once ur new billing cycle starts, ALL these suggestions will work, but until then, NONE of them will work.
Fortunately for myself, I have an unlocked att N3, and I use the att hotspot (which of course does NOT talk to tmo), so I can tether to my hearts content without jumping thru all these stupid and frustrating hoops that the OP is going thru right now -
So OP, u can keep trying all this crap every month, or simply flash the ATT rom on ur N3, and then turn on the blue att hotspot, (instead of using the metered pink tmo hotspot). Then u will be truly unlimited with no tethering limits -
