[Q] Sony Xperia ZL 6506 locked from At&t? Is that possible - Sony Xperia ZL

Dear all,
I just bought a Sony Xperia ZL 6506 white on ebay. It is new. I think it was a good deal since it was 455 shipping included. the guy states in the ad that the phone is brand new. I have T-mobile, and I am concerned of only one thing: the seller wrote "At&t" under the voice "carrier" and states: "PHONE WORKS WITH AT&T. NOT SURE IF IT IS UNLOCKED TO OTHER GSM NETWORKS." I googled and I think there is no such an Sony Xperia ZL 6506 locked to Att, or am I missing something? Should it work with my Tmobile sim card? Thanks
It is listed here: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Sony-Xperia...D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557

You'll be fine - the C6506 is unlocked for any GSM carrier. It is the reason I just purchased one yesterday as well: because it has the 1700mhz T-mobile AWS band (unlike the HTC One Developer Edition that I'm now selling).
It will not be locked to AT&T. Now, the T-mobile version of the Xperia Z is another story and it will be locked to T-mobile, but you'll be fine.
Enjoy your phone! Setting mine up now and I just love it so far.

Awesome I hope so. I bought it because it is pentaband. It has the H+ network also on the 900 Mhz frequenzy!! So I am gonna use it in Italy (im italian working in USA) as well if my studies were corrects. Do you agree? And you are gonna travel to Europe sometimes rite?

I actually just came home from Italy on my honeymoon! I didn't have the phone at that time, but I did have the Nexus 4 and it worked beautifully. Too bad I dropped it on the cement after a few too many beers at the beer garden in Prague
Cheers,

Congrats for ur wedding! I bet u were in my hometown (Venezia, Venexiano means inhabitant of Venice in venetian dialect).
Anyway yeah I wanted to buy the Nexus 4, way cheaper...but I wanted to have the option to use a SD card...
May I ask you way you ditched the Nexus 4 for the Xperia ZL? Was Praga's cement too hard and it could not make it?
Cheers

Well, I was using the Nexus 4 on AT&T in the US at that time, and AT&T's 3G network is fairly slow here. It was time to get a phone with LTE, so I got the HTC One. Now, I switched to T-Mobile and they just turned on the LTE service in my area (San Jose, CA) and I needed the pentaband phone. I didn't want to buy a phone from T-Mobile because I prefer to buy unlocked versions and I really liked the Sony. It's so compact for a 5" screen.
Yes, we went to Venezia. It was so beautiful! One of our fondest memories was traveling out to Burano and Murano islands. True paradise.
Cheers,
-Collin-

Cool my mom was born and raise in Murano. I go often there with my boat.
Anyways...did u really notice a big difference between Tmobile H+ and Tmobile LTE?
thanks
A.

T-Mobile has LTE deployed in Chicago. I'm getting roughly the same speeds as HSPA+ most of the time. The only difference is the latency and some peak speeds. I've seen almost 30Mbps on LTE in some areas. Honestly, I turn my LTE off most of the time because I've been using up my bandwidth way too quickly.

I get about 10-12mbps on HSPA+ and usually 25-30mbps on LTE here in San Jose. 10-12 is just fine for me, but I just got one of the new unlimited plans so I see no real drawback. Uploads are WAY faster though, and that helps with my "auto-upload" feature I use when I snap photos I guess. You know, and pictures of my food being posted on Facebook and whatnot

I just SWITCHED to AT&T and get only HSPA/HSPA+. No LTE service at all. Is there something new subscribers need to do? I've only seen existing AT&T subscribers having success with the ZL.
Suggestions? Thanks

Solution to Xperia ZL and no LTE Service

I solved the issue.
First the problem: If you are a new customer bringing an unlocked phone (not AT&T branded), when you register your IMEI, the network will not recognize it as AT&T property and will deny you LTE service.
Solution: Finally, after a week, today I went to the local store, and they put the IMEI of a store phone in and voila, LTE right away. Obviously, this should not be the case, and those who get service right away must be existing AT&T customers with an AT&T phone in their account. This must change otherwise people won't want to switch! HTH

[Q] 4G, Prepaid?

So I had a Droid 3 on Verizon on a prepaid line ($95 for 450 talk, unlimited text, and unlimited data) but that was 3G.
With the gNexi coming out, I was wondering if I would even be able to use it's 4g capabilities on my prepaid line? I'm obviously going to buy it at full-retail price but will the 4G even work or will I be stuck on 3G all the time?
I can't do contracts...
Should I wait for T-Mobile to get it and use their 4G prepaid instead?
I'm unsure if VZW has a LTE prepay service. That's something you have to look into separately. My guess is they don't. Unless they explicitly say that your prepay covers LTE I would expect to only get 3G.
As far as switching to a different carrier no one can tell you which is better. Its all about where you will use the phone and its your call.
I just did an online chat with a VZW rep, here it is:
Please hold for a Verizon Wireless sales representative to assist you with your order. Thank you for your patience.
You are now chatting with 'Kiara'
Kiara: Hello. Thank you for visiting our chat service. May I help you with your order today?
You: I was wondering if 4G phones like the Droid Bionic are eligible for the Prepaid Smartphone plans???
Kiara: I do apologize for the inconvenience, although the Bionic is not able to be pre paid
You: Are their any 4G phones available for the Prepaid plans?
You: And/or can you tell me if there are any plans to offer any???
Kiara: I do apologize although at this time there are not
You: Ok, thank you for your help
So, looks like you can't, at this time, use a 4G phone on their prepaid plans.
I currently have a Nexus S on T-mobile's $30 month prepaid plan (100 mins, unl. text, unl. data*throttled after 5GB), and I love it but I don't use my phone much for calls... I plan on getting the Galaxy Nexus and using it on this plan once it's available.
Yeah it looks like I'll have to wait for the galaxy nexus to drop on TMobile
WoW this sucksss.... It probably won't even come out until late December...
Maybe I should just import? No idea how it works but I want my nexus asap

Look on the bright side... t-mo plans are cheaper than Verizon. So you'll save money if you switch. But then again tmo reception around your area would play a big role too.

Yeah I looked into it and Tmobile is way better than Verizon. I live in NYC so reception shouldnt be a problem at all. Now I'm just trying to figure out if I should import the 16GB model or wait for the 32GB US model :/ bleh ... I wonder when Tmobile will be getting it

If you have T-mo service in the area then its sooo much better. Just wait, don't import. You'll probably have to buy it unlocked (probably best buy, just like Nexus S) but you'll be better off for it. You don't want to sign a 2year for a Nexus on VZW and get blocked tethering and crap on it.

its all up in the air. As I said above ^, they might not "get it" officially at all. Might have to buy unlocked from Google/Best Buy.
But the winner is that the T-mo plans can be as low as 1/2 the price of VZW.

Actually they have a $30 Prepaid plan with 100talk/unlimited text/ and unlimited data (5gb of 4G) -- available only on new line activation.
Btw can you clarify the "unlocked from google/best buy" part? Would I still have to use a sim card if Tmobile wont officially sell it

yea their prepay options are pretty epic. 100min is a bit low for most though. I was just referring to their postpay options that are pretty cheap too. I've looked into moving from my EM+ no-contract plan to a prepay lately actually.

Well if you want my opinion I think they'll end up just selling it exactly like they did with the Nexus S. They sold it online, and they offered it via Best Buy unlocked. You'd buy the phone, then buy your service and get a SIM card from AT&T or T-mobile (or Simple Mobile, or whatever) separately and plug it in. The GN is pentaband HSPA+ and will work with pretty much any SIM in the world.

Speaking from personal experience, the problem with T-Mobile in NYC is that as soon as you are a few feet below ground level, you lose signal. When you can get 5 bars, it's great, T-Mobile probably has the least congested network of anyone, and you enjoy superb 3/4G speeds. But you will be frustrated by how spotty the coverage is. Go 20 miles North to Westchester or 20 miles east to LI and you'll often find yourself exiting buildings to get a signal.

Lol that's alright I don't leave the city anyways. What I am wondering is what happens when you deplete your limited use of the 4g data (I'll get 5gb). Someone told me that you get bumped down to EDGE(2G) speeds, but I thought you only go down to 3G.

As I (and many others) explained in the other thread about T-mobile:
- You get 5GB of data, that's 4g/3g/2g.
- Once you use all 5GB in a month, you get throttled.
- Throttled speeds are in the range of what EDGE is, even though your phone still says "3G" up in the status bar.
- Once your billing period ends, you get a new 5GB batch of data.
There's no discerning between 4G and 3G by T-mobile. HSPA+ is just a fast version of T-mobile's 3G network. Its not separate.
Just curious has any one looked into metroPCS they say they allow any cdma phone on their network and they have lte. There speeds may not be the greatest and not the best coverage but the price is spot on and unlimited!

Don't think it'll work. You'd have to unlock it somehow, and even then I think theres going to be inconsistencies with the LTE frequencies they use, etc.

I thought that all nexus devices where unlocked developer phones. also i just talked to metroPCS and they did say hardware wise any cdma ohone will work and so will the LTE but, there might be a problem with software incompatibilities. but if that is true i would think our fellow xda members would figure out how to fix any software problems

It won't be unlocked from the factory because 1) its CDMA/LTE with VZW specific bands, and 2) its being made to order for Verizon to subsidize it (which means they will SURELY dictate that its locked).
The Nexus devices have historically been sold full price without a carrier subsidy (and therefore are unlocked) because google wants them to be used anywhere in the world with any SIM card. This is different because there are carriers involved from the start (and the device is CDMA).
Also, I'm pretty sure the LTE won't be interoperable between the two carriers. Verizon will have their own proprietary network stack for use with their LTE service, and it uses slightly different frequencies from other carriers for LTE, specifically so that their devices won't be interoperable with other networks. They want you to buy a VZW phone and stay on VZW (dirty play, but that's how they roll).
Hope that clarifies things a little bit. Now no one knows for sure how much of the issues can be fixed with new firmware flashes, so I guess we'll see when it comes out. For example I know a lot of people use Sprint and Verizon phones with different custom firmware to run on networks like Virgin, Boost, and Cricket in order to cut down the monthly bill.

[Q] at&t or verizon on san francisco

Hi, i've just moved to san francisco recently and i wanna get a new phone with contract. I know nexus is the best right now but which model should i choose? And i wont be buying an unlocked gsm gnex.
Will thank every post with useful opinions!
Thanks
I believe it was Tech TV, but when the iPhone 4 first came out for Verizon, they did a side-by-side comparison of the AT&T model & the Verizon model in San Francisco. They went to various locations around San Francisco testing signal strength, web page load times, uploads/downloads, etc and I recall that all but 1 of the tests came out as Verizon being the winner.
As far as the Galaxy Nexus goes, obviously, you can acquire it for either service. The plus with Verizon is you get 32GB rather then 16GB, although the battery drain is faster(with LTE on) and I believe Verizon's plans are still the most expensive also. Personally, I'm only on Verizon because I've got the no-longer-offered 'unlimited data' otherwise I'd say bye and go to AT&T or T-Mobile. I kinda miss having a GSM phone due to the ease in phone swapping + worldwide functionality(switching to other providers).

Confused ... You are saying you won't be buying an unlocked gsm nexus and asking whether att or Verizon? Currently the nexus is available only on Verizon. If you want att, you have to buy the unlocked gsm gnex and you have no other option.

Oh 1 more thing i love developing my phone (rooting, flashing n etc,) so which one should be best? I really in need a response. Ill thank every useful posts
National coverage and network: Verizon is the best. I'm happy with AT&T since it has decent coverage in major metros and I can tolerate a dropped call here and there. So if your job depend on phone calls and need network everywhere you go, Verizon is better.
International usage: ATT since you can easily swap sim cards. Some Verizon phones are world phones but I believe nexus is not.
Data speeds: nexus is lte on Verizon so it has faster data speeds compared to gsm model. Generally Verizon lte has much better coverage than att. Att just got started on lte. But att hspa speeds are more than enough. I easily get anywhere between 3 - 5 Mbps average speeds on att which is more than enough for me.
Phone choices: I love the fact that I can import unlocked phones and just pop a sim to get it working on att. But if you only buy contract phones then both network has good phone options.
Also on modding with nexus no issues, otherwise both network force manufacturers to lock bootloader. But nowadays it has gotten better with manufacturers providing option to unlock bootloaders after the device is released in a few weeks.

An entire forum of developers and not one comment about ATT in SF? Amazing!!
TO the OP, other than the above comment regarding National Coverage (verizon is better), which is true, let me speak specifically to SF:
DO NOT get ATT! The network is embarrassing bad in SF, and while I have been outside of SF for about a year now, I am sure others can speak to this. TO be fair, when I left they were investing a few million to patch it up but I am not sure where that was left. I had to move to Verizon for this simple reason alone. There was a reason it was so bad. All the Iphone users during commute hours and the network was not up to par. Lots of anger....
Verizon was great once i switched.

I was surprised as well and yes you are right AT&T service is terrible in San Francisco.
I had AT&T since the first iPhone and just recently switched. AT&T was great at home and where I work but was simply infuriating when I would be in the city.
There are still some low speed areas on Verizon in SF but I have had much better luck.
Cnet covered this and did a video on it

I made the mistake of buying this phone assuming the same thing... Right now the international Note 2 will only get EDGE in the vast majority of places, because T-Mobile runs most of its 3G on the 1700 frequency which the N7100 doesn't support. T-Mobile is in the process of changing to 1900 (mostly for iPhone users), but who knows how long that'll take. I'm mostly fine with EDGE since I'm on WIFI a lot, but I definitely wish I had known before buying.

Thanks. I had the exact same question and you answered it perfectly. I was going to buy the GT-N7100 to use on T-Mobile, but if it only gets edge, I won't. Maybe it would work on another carrier, though, like AT&T straight-talk?
Just FYI, I do get HSPA+ while driving to work here in Northern VA although some sites suggest T-Mobile is work to upgrade their 850 to 1900. I do get pretty good speed (5Mbps down/2Mbps up). Check this site if you want to confirm your area but for sure it will work currently only on EDGE: http://www.airportal.de/
I just ordered a Straight Talk SIM card because I know lots of people have constant 3G/4G connection on it since it runs on AT&T. The only draw back with AT&T/Straight Talk is the prohibit unlimited international SMS which I use A LOT.
"E"??
Hi, I just got my N7100 yesterday and upon booting it up with a T-Mobile sim all I get is the "E" for edge network. Like you guys mentioned I guess this is normal for right now correct? Also do any of you get the "R" icon next to your signal strength bar? I opens up the "Roaming" page buddy and thinks I'm roaming. How do you get rid of this "R" icon or can you? Please help newbie here.
Thanks,
John
glad i live in an area where we have the 1900mhz band. its faster than my ATT speed. with my gf tmobile sim i was getting 7mbps and with my att its like 3mbp

Carrier branded versions of phones are often sim-locked and significantly slower to receive software updates. They're also more expensive in the long-run once you factor in the cost of a contract, even with the discounts. And carrier bloatware is usually a negative, too.
Is the T-Mobile Note II free of any of these disadvantages?
2 thumbs up!

1.) SIM Unlocking is dirt cheap (even free sometimes).
2.) ROM upgrade availability is just as quick if not quicker if you use custom ROMS (and if you're on this site you likely know how to flash them).
3.) Carrier branded devices can be bought off contract.
4.) Carrier bloatware can be frozen and/or removed quite easily.

[Q]Traveling to Italy, should I buy a SIM card?

Hey guys,
I'm looking to travel to Italy for 2 weeks in the summer. I have an unlocked tmous note 2, and I want access to data during my vacation. What company should I look into to get a SIM card from while in Italy? Should I order one before going or when I get there? I really just want access to look something up real quick if I need to, or make a quick call.
Thanks!

sorry no input directly on Italian mobile companies... but I can say to watch out for the frequencies of the phone, t-mobile uses some weird 3g/4g/hspa frequencies that tend to differ from what the rest of the world uses... which translates that you'll get edge/2g speeds... this is the one place that the unlocked GSM nexus phones has us on (or an international note 2) this page http://www.gsmarena.com/network-bands.php3?sCountry=ITALY shows umts 1800/2100 in italy
also to be able to use the sim card you'll need to have your phone sim unlocked (call tmobile and see if you qualify or pay a bit of $$$ to have it done online)
in my time in europe (U.K., Germany, France, Norway, and Spain) as long as you are in or around a city you can find WIFI fairly easily (might have to buy a drink or something to use it though)...
if you REALLY want 3g service you might justify buying a nexus phone (4 or galaxy) device or a nexus7 tablet
Thanks for the input, especially on Italy's umts bands. I should have no problems getting it sim unlocked, done it before through them. specs show the note 2, supporting umts 1700/2100.

Make sure you get the apn settings from the carrier your going to use before you go there... Last time I went to Europe I had to set up my own APNs for data and mms because the companies had no idea what APNs were... Just do a little research with all the phone carriers of the area you'll be traveling

good idea, thanks.
I had no problem using my tmoUS sensation with local card in Germany, Poland on their Tmo network, both voice and data were ok.

The only place I know about is Ukraine. And I would get one there every time I went there. Data is expensive but text/talk is cheap.

My Xperia ZL review

I was fortunate enough to get my hands on a final release Black Sony Xperia ZL from a very reliable source. This phone is expected to be released around the middle to end of March. This is the unlocked C6506 model of the ZL which comes with UMTS HSPA+ 850 (Band V), 900 (Band VIII), 1700 (Band IV), 1900 (Band II), 2100 (Band I) GSM GPRS/EDGE 850, 900, 1800, 1900 LTE Band I, Band II, Band IV, Band V and Band XVII. For those of you who are not sure what that means this is a penta band phone that will work with Tmobile and AT&T HSPA + network as well as AT&T's LTE and Tmobile's soon to be released LTE network. I am currently using it on Tmobile but i have also tested it with AT&T.
This phone has the exact same specs as the Xperia Z minus the dust and waterproofing. However what you lose in extra protection gains you a very compact phone. It is actually smaller than the Galaxy S III as far as length and width are concerned, it is slightly thicker but not by much. The back casing is made of a poly plastic with a durable textured back that actually gives you a better grip over a 5" screen that was made to be used one handed.
The screen is bright and crisp and the viewing angles are great if your one of those people that look at your phone dead on (Why people want a phone that can be seen by the person sitting next to you is beyond me). I will take some pics comparing it with the Galaxy S III as well as the Xperia TX. But the screen is amazing and watching the walking dead on it has been a joy.
Battery life has been pretty decent. Im averaging about 13-14 hours of light to moderate use and 6-8 hours of heavy use witch include browsing the net, youtube, facebooking and watching movies. Mind you i have done all this without using stamina mode. i wanted to see what my results where without it so that i then have something to compare it against. i will report back.
The Ui is pretty slick it has some neat animations but its not heavily tweaked like sense 4.0 or cartoony like Touch Wiz. there is nothing about this phone that has lag or stutter in anyway. It is FAST, and ive attempted to bog it down opening and closing apps as well as switching between apps with not so much as a problem. Another nice touch which had me thrilled was that i was able to download all of my old Nvidia Tegra games that i purchased back when i was using the G2X (im really enjoying gaming on this phone GTA3 and Vice city play great as well as 9MM, Order and Chaos, The Dark Knight, Spiderman, Backstab, Max Payne, Dead Trigger, Dead Space, Vector and Angry Birds). Music sounds excellent provided you have decent headphones and the speaker on this thing is pretty loud.loud enough to allow me to have conversations on speaker while driving around town.
Things im not crazy about...Im not digging the fact that the background has switched from black to white in the stock messaging app as well as contacts but thats just personal taste. Also the lock screen requires you to do a full swipe up and down with this neat little window blind effect but its annoying at times because it really does require you to go from top to bottom and vice versa for it to unlock the screen. The camera takes great shots but i feel that the burst shot should really have its own button rather than me having to go looking for it in the menu or perhaps do like HTC has and register that fact that i haven't taken my finger off the shutter. Especially considering it that theres unused space in the left hand menu options that would make for a good place to put a burst shot button. The notification area has the easy access settings buttons vibration, blue-tooth, wi-fi, data connections and settings, but they are not customizable at all and that reallys drags away from their purpose in my opinion as it should be up to the user to set. the placement of the front facing camera while interesting does mean that if your a right handed user you may be holding it with your left hand or looking at the person your chating with sideways because your palm may get in the way.
None of this is deal breaking just my personal take. If any one has questions or request ill try to accommodate so ask away.
Thanks for the review! Looking forward to when this will be available on the Sony online store. Can't wait!

Yeah the one Negri is the C6502 model which has the HSPA+ bands but the one i reviewed is the C6506 which has all the HSPA+ bands as well as the LTE bands. Just wanted to point that out.

Would you say the viewable screen real estate is about the same as the GS3, seeing the XL has onscreen navigation and the GS3 does not?

Yes the screen size/real estate is almost identical to the Galaxy S III. I have pics that i would like to post but, forgive my ignorance, i haven't been able to figure out how to do so.

Yup, just checked Negri and he has the C6502 for $645.00. I'd wait for the C6506, since those LTE bands is a must. I'm gonna go ahead and guess, that the C6506 on Sony store will be sold for $549, since they have the Acro S on sale for $499.99. Would be awesome if they have it at that price. I personally, will be buying the white version, once it goes up on sale, at the Sony store.

I'm hearing mid March, or end of March. But, after seeing this, might be mid March. http://store.sony.com/webapp/wcs/st...10151&langId=-1&productId=8198552921666543654 shows the Estimated ship date: 03/15/2013 but, yesterday I saw that it was March 7th. Guess they changed it.
Hmmm Interesting. I want to order on Negrielectronics so bad! But I`d rather have white haha
The C6506 will have 3G Tmobile, AT&T and LTE right?

Yes both HSPA+ and LTE on both At&t and Tmobile. That's why i believe that Sony will only release the ZL in Canada and the US. The Z will not support the full spectrum of bands like the ZL will. Its a bit disheartening as the Xperia Z is beautiful, but it will only play nice with HSPA+. I had a friend who almost cried over the Z but after he saw how compact the ZL is he seeing that its the better choice for him.
HSPA?
Running AT&T Straight Talk on a N4. The ZL C6502 has the 850/1900 frequencies to run 3G. Will this be the same HSPA 3G that I'm getting now?

your partially right the Z thats on negri will not play nice with HSPA because its missing the 1900 but there is a model according to the white papers of the Xperia Z the C6602 that will have full HSPA but not LTE.
It seems to me that the Xperia ZL C6502 has the right frequencies to run faux 4G on AT&T, or as I understand it HSPA. Am I right or wrong? I do know that it will not support LTE like the upcoming C6506 US model.
Thinking about placing an order. I really like how this phone is all display. Just hope development supports this phone.
