General Website issues thread - About xda-developers.com

Hi all,
Since I was unable to find a thread or stickey (which are the same actually) to report some website issues I encouter I decided to create this thread.
(perhaps it will be closed and perhaps it will stay open).
In here you can post any website related issues. Is a page not opening, is a link not working? Sometimes even specific browsers will give problems.
Post it here and perhaps the staff will take a look
What kind of information do you need to tell before we (users and staff) can help:
- What page were you visiting or trying to visit (Give the url = website link)
- What Internet Browser were you using and wich version (Internet Explorer, FireFox, Opera, Google Chrome, Safari)
- What is the operating system your computer or laptop is running on?( Windows 8/7/XP/Vista Mac OS (Give version) )
- What are the stepps you tried yourself? (cleaned cache of webbrowser, rebooted computer etc)
- What kind of Anti Virus software or Firewall are you using (Avast!, AVG, Windows Security Essentials etc)

So my first issue I encounter was like this:
Tablet: Ipad 3rd generation running iOS 6
Browser used: Safari
Website I tried to visit: www.forum.xda-developers.com/index.php
Problem: Website stays blank and empty. However on my computer (Win 7 Google Chrome no issues)
Any tips?
Performed selfsteps:
- Reboot device (multiple times)
- Deleted date of safari
All the other websits of forum.xda-developers.com seems to work without issues. I've made several posts today with my iPad
(yeah I know this is more of a android website)

recent changes causing continuous refresh of page
I use Firefox 22.0. I have NoScript installed.
About a week ago, whenever I come to XDA, my page refreshes continuously. I have to hit the "stop" button at just the right moment to get the loop to stop long enough for me to read anything.
I tried temporarily allowing all scripts on this page. This did not change the behavior.
P.S. This only happens if I am logged in. If I log out, behavior returns to normal...

I have also been having this issue, both on Chrome 29 for Windows, and Chrome 29 for Android on my Note 2.

Le bump..
Now we need to collect more issues and perhaps fixes

Restarting Firefox 23.0.1 in safe mode stops the looping, but all of the Search for Your Device and QuickLinks drop downs from the menu open behind the ad at the top of the page.

no issues

I would love to be able to fix this issue, but I can not recreate this problem so I can't push a fix. Any web developers seeing the reloading problem who can point out the issue?
The only thing I can figure out is that it seems to happen to people with NoScript or AdBlock installed, but I've run the site with both and it doesn't happen to me (in multiple browsers/os). But then again, some people say they don't have it installed and it still does the reloading.
Changing to the 2013 - 1024 theme seems to fix it for folks.

I use an Adblock and I have no issues with the website in that matter. The only thing I encounter at the moment is that I need to login on every page. It seems like I can't be remembered for some reason. Will clear cache tomorrow tho.

That's a Chrome issue. I don't have to login every time I go to a new thread but it asks me to login every few hours. Loads of people have reported the issue but afaik there's no known fix other than using a different browser.

I even get logged out on Opera Mini, though I get logged in after clicking on any link on forum, so I don't think it's only Chrome issue

Good Answer!

And XDA is crashing my Chrome desktop browser again...
It always happens when trying to load the ads. I'm running a new computer with windows 8.1. No browser extensions.
For such a tech-oriented site, this is kind of sad. You really need to reign in your advertisers. It's been 2+ years of these issues.

This has nothing to do with the original issue. Ads should not be able to crash the browser. I've had them get very slow, we try to weed out any advertisements that are unduly taxing to system resources. We don't pick which ads run on the site. If you are still having issues, you can open a new thread with a full description of the problem. It doesn't sound like it would just be XDA if your computer is crashing.
Closing thread for now as original issue is fixed.

Frostwire apk tester

anyone else a tester for limewire? sign up on their site they emailed me right back. seems ok sofar evo 2.2
Looks like a great thread for the aps forum.
i'm not a tester, the development forum is probably not the palce for this post. I personlally dont use [email protected] programs as they are infested with spyware, viruses and fake files. Newsgroups all the way, still has some but much much less.

It only has viruses for the people that don't know what their doing. But such is true with any aspect of the internet. This is why I have a job in tech support because people will always be dumb enough to click on just about anything and open the floodgates to infect their computers.
if anyone wants the apk just msg me. io have it on my evo 2.2 and my moment 2.1 and runs great really.. just not many people on there yet. also yea if you are dumb you can get viruses from going to google. people that know how to use computes really shouldnt worry about too many problems. also its should stay in the development cause its trying to develop the features and this shows that we can totally open these things up for some wicked stuff.

It has viruses for everyone however if you know what you are doing you can weed out about 95% of them this is true (i mean come on i thought all mp3s were 5kbs and made you go to a web page to "acquire a license" first.). this doesn't mean you aren't at risk of getting particularly clever virus or spyware no matter how much you know.
still like i said much better ways then P2P. though i haven't found a decent newsgroup program for android yet.
Besides the fact that this is in the wrong section, I'll post the newest apk link here: http://dl.frostwire.com/android/0.3.10/frostwire.apk

AppFinder on Windows Phone 7

Check out my free app in the Marketplace: AppFinder
AppFinder is the fastest way to find apps by name bar none.
Start typing the name of an app or publisher, and the search results are shown instantly.
tap one of the results to go to the marketplace page for the app.
Check it out and let me know what you think
Been using it last couple days, its a big help! Thanks!!!
I'll check it out thanks!
Thank you - it's very fast like the marketplace search should be. Good for quick looking apps if you know the name.
Are there any improvements coming? Like the Top Downloads or anything else?
appfinder feedback
thanks for the feedback - I'm on it
Great app, thanks!
BTW I can't find HTC Hub...

does this fix the crash where it closed and wouldn't reopen for me (even after soft reset)?
I had to uninstall, reinstall to get it working again.
I don't think so.
Although I think I know the cause. I will have to roll the fix into another update.
I think there is a small window where the downloaded data file can be corrupted if the writing to flash is interrupted. It will be simple to fix. For now, if you hit it, uninstall reinstall is the only option.
nice find. but did you know while in maketplace you can use the search button to find apps as well?

Of course I do
AppFinder is all about making apps discoverable in the fastest way possible.
I think if you're not in the top 20 apps in the marketplace under any one of the categories, then as a developer you're invisible. AppFinder seeks to make it easier to find apps via search, and with the update, via browsing as well.
Update is in the hopper, still waiting for testing to complete...

the annoying thing is that it searches music and video as well. i can't just search for apps alone
locales
Ok, so I just figured out I've only been indexing the en-US locale
I've updated the data to include
{ "en-US", "en-GB", "en-IE", "en-CA", "en-IN", "en-AU", "en-HK", "en-SG", "de-DE", "fr-FR", "fr-BE", "de-AT", "de-CH", "it-IT", "en-NZ", "es-ES", "es-MX" };
this change is effective immediately as it is a data update. Still waiting for the update to make it through the approval process. It seems that the holiday has slowed things down a bit
The update finally arrived
Nice new features and still very fast. But unfortunately, in my case, it wont load after the second app start (even at first start if I switch the section). I always have to deinstall/reinstall again once the app was started.
Maybe you can take a look? Feels like a caching problem or something like that. I'm using a Samsung Omnia 7 in germany - if that helps
Feature wishlist:
1. add a settings screen to edit:
a.) the number of list entries on one page (10, 20, 50) to keep the app fast enough
b.) the section on loading (and maybe you also can set this to no section just for fast look-up app search - I used the app for this before the update)
2. Maybe you can use the OS-typical "left-to-right-scrolling-loading-dots" instead of the big ones?
3. New logo if there is enough time

Private Joker,
Thanks for the feedback.
First - there was a bug that only impacted the German locale! I was trying to save bandwidth by truncating unnecessary leading zeros in the price and this caused an exception when the locale was set to German. I've updated the data to include the leading zeros and this fixes the problem for Germans. You will have to uninstall and reinstall though to get it to work. I am very sorry for the inconvenience, and I really appreciate you taking the time to give me your feedback even though the app was not working for you at all. I hope you will try again given that the data has been fixed.
Regarding your feedback -
I think you are right on the mark for #2 and #3
I don't understand 2b.
regarding 1a.
perf should not be impacted by the number of items that are shown -
Appfinder actually transfers the marketplace data to the device and indexes it locally. I do this because the network is really, really slow. Aside from having artists and albums mixed up with apps in the marketplace search results, I also was tired of waiting for results to load. Scrolling through the apps means waiting.
The delay at the beginning is caused by reading the marketplace data from flash and indexing it in RAM. Occasionally the loading dots will appear after launching (like the first time that you use it) because AppFinder has transfered a new data file and needs to parse it again. Instead of delaying every 10 or so apps in the list, there is one delay at the beginning (which is relatively small). Right now parsing the file takes about 4 seconds.
Perf could be greatly improve if I had access to memory mapped file APIs. Further compressing the data would help as well - The really slowest part is really reading from the flash. I can improve perf when a network update occurs by reading from the flash in the background before blocking - this would drop the update delay from ~4 seconds to ~1 second.
I could also not query as you're typing -- Waiting until the enter button has been pressed would reduce CPU load and any chunkiness - pressing search would just render the apps instantly.
Anyway, really appreciate your positive attitude and willingness to give feedback in light of what must be a frustrating experience. Please give it another try.
Thanks,
Eric

downloaded it.... havent yet flashed.... ppl give some changelogs or reviews about it pls. the samfirmware one is freaky....
update!
This the latest beta firmware of bada 2.0 for the Wave I & Wave II. Samsung has compiled both firmwares on Monday 8th August. Below you will find a short list with some things that has been changed or improved:
- New icon (Sound & vibrate) in the statusbar
- Better Graphics startup screen Chaton app
- Slightly changed keyboard
- New startup screen Twitter app
- Slightly changed Youtube icon (Menu)
- Faster scrolling through photos
- Voice output, you download German test voicefiles. With voice output your device can read incoming sms text messages, email and more. I haven’t test this feature at the moment.
- Can’t log into my Samsung account.
Problems:
With this firmware I faced for the first time some real problems, because it will crash on some (stranges) moments (mainly using the twitter app). I advice you to set the debug level on low, so you won’t get a blue screen with detailed crashlogs instead your device will reboot automatically.
For the ones who are using KIES for backups, I can advice you to backup only the contacts and sms text messaging. I won’t suggest to use a full backup, I’ve tried it 2 times but both times my device crashed and it got stuck into a reboot loop.
Overall I can say that the devices are a bit faster (snappier) but it also crashed often than before. Since this is just a beta firmware its normal that it crashed.
Once again I’m warning people that they should be aware of these things. If you want a stable 2.0 firmware you should wait till 2.0 is ready!!
- How to fix Samsung account problem...
There is a new Samsung Account login in this beta Firmware and it doesnt work, users cannot type in passwort and after klicking on logon bada crashes. But there is a workaround, so everyone can use the downloads in samsung apps.
At the first startup page to configure language time, and samsung account there is still the old login page.
You can trick the wave by removing your simcard starting the phone with it, then it forgets that it was already the first time started.
After that simply add your simcard and logon on the first startup page, after that you will not see in settings/accounts any account but you can use them as always.
Email accounts can be handeled over the settings/email and so on.
You will see Samsung Account over samsungapps.
Things I've seen already:
- much faster and smoother than before
- font much easier on the eyes (clearer)
- bootsplash black again (no blueish like in XPKH1) / dialogs still blue
- the 3 info pop-ups after first-run have been revamped
- several icons revamped
That's nice, but based on what I have read on the SamFirmware changelog, I decided to NOT flash my phone with this firmware, mainly because I don't particularly like (frequent) crashes....
I'll stick to XPKH1 for now...
20 more min of downloading (hotfile is piss slow as usual .. 100kb/s )
Then i'll flash as well

thanks for the clarification, nevertheless I rely on the twitter client... Anyway, I'm sure the next beta will have these problems fixed, and I feel safe enough with XPKH1...
thanks again!
what i want to know is does it installs all apps? is it worth the download?
Seems SocialHub - at least here - (changed CSC to DBT) doesn't show my set-up Facebook account, though it properly display the feed and posts status updates.
You'll see that it actually added the account by checking feeds or "add account" there facebook won't show up anymore (obviously).
More I noticed:
- phone faster reacts after boot
- you can't switch pages by swiping in the gap between the bottom two rows (on menu, not homescreen)
SamsungApps always tells me "network not available", also I can't see any string in it's UI.

oh man, DAP??? it kinda reminds me of... 2000/2001 times and stuff!
But you're right, Hotfile is very slow generally...I paid for a premium account some months ago, and had been cursing every moment after I did that... Filesonic works for me like a charm for months now.
I also noticed:
- CPU usage in "About phone" is shown in real-time now
It was always in real time.
Is it safe to flash this one ? All the people who flashed.... are they experiencing loads of crashes ?
as other 2.0,, once get into contact.. then to get back to main screen will be difficult ... few home touch needed

Its exactingly the same as all the others. Nothing visually changes at all in the versions it just becomes more stable and less crashes and faster
Other than that nothing ever changes.... just sayin

There are crashes as before. But I was able to restore my yesterday's backup (with Apps ) and some of the stuff worked from the backup. Apps, background, internet connection settings. I tlost however my bookmarks, the homescreen settings, accounts and the ringtones...
But the biggest selling point of this fw is the SPEED. It's much faster. The browser flies compared to the KH1.

XDA forums almost unusable with NoScript

Hi - My internet browser is Firefox, and I have been using NoScript for years.
There is only one website that causes me constant problems when browsing: XDA Developers.
I use NoScript constantly with a lot of stuff disabled by default: Everything Facebook is always disabled, along with doubleclick and a bunch of other tracking websites.
With NoScript on, the XDA screen is constantly jumping around, with various websites constantly trying to refresh about twice a second. It is so jumpy with embedded websites continuously refreshing, that I can't even control NoScript well enough to enable whatever disabled website(s) are causing the problem.
I wouldn't be frustrated if this happened to me all the time, but XDA is the only website I see this problem on. I would expect a high-tech developer website like XDA to have less problems instead of more problems.
Sigh. I wish somebody at XDA could fix this.

NoScript has a whitelist feature. If you don't want to use it, you can't expect it to be "fixed" (actually, modified to fit your needs would be a better choice of words) anytime soon, as the forums (and many other forums, in general) rely rather heavily on scripts.
I personally have XDA added to my whitelist.
As for the refreshes, did you make sure it's not another add-on that's conflicting? Start FF in safe mode and check if the issue persists.
Don't know if this helps, but I just tested XDA with NoScript without any issues.
That being said, a lot of features rely on JavaScript, so no guarantee what would happen if you only turned on some of them.
Huh.. I use NS on FF, and have seen no issues. To be sure it is NS, have you told it to temporarily allow all, and see if that fixes it? It could certainly be another issue..
What he could be speaking of is the portal constant refreshing (not on the forum), which also occurs on my differents computers with NS (with xda on whitelist).
For me, everytime I scroll on the portal main page, it refresh itself.
It's weird - Something changed between yesterday and today. Yesterday, this page wouldn't sit still until I was able to do enough "Temporarily allow all this page" button presses (about 5 or 6) to get the page finally stabilized.
Now, everything was stable when I entered XDA with the same "allow" list I had yesterday.
I'm not a big fan of "White List"ing sites, since so many sites have Facebook embedded in them (amongst many other tracking sites I don't like). Ever since Facebook violated my privacy and sucked up my personal contact information without my explicit approval, I ... ...
... well, let's just say I won't "Like" Facebook.
I appreciate the feedback from y'all, and I wish I knew what changed.
Thanks!

Some forum features won't work: dropdown menus (e.g. "Go to Page" next to the page numbers, "Quick Links", "Rate thread") search boxes not being cleared automatically when you click them, username/device completion in search boxes or using the new mention feature, share buttons (they won't show how many times X got shared), etc. The WIYIWYG editor obviously doesn't work as well.
The portal's layout is a bit messed up, too.
It's all fixed by adding xda-developers.com to the whitelist. I think you both already have it added (I removed it for testing), which is what you're supposed to do for websites you trust anyway.

I would suggest using something that will block them on all websites, then. You can probably do it using NoScript's advanced filtering options, but I personally already use AdBlock Plus, and there's a neat list you can subscribe to that will block all those buttons. Get the "Annoyance Block List" from here.

I have the opposite problem it seems, in that if I white-list the site then quite often one of the scripts goes haywire
and refreshes the page repeatedly for several refreshes or until the server complains with an error message about being overloaded.
It has been suggested to me that this may be a 2013 theme problem, so I'm trying the 2010 one for a few days to see if that fixes it.

@Nameless One: Yes, I've been seeing the "Server Overloaded" error message as well. I wasn't sure if it was NoScript related, though I was beginning to suspect it. I would open the same XDA pages in IE or Chrome without any problem, but see the "Overloaded" error only with Firefox. Usually (but, not always), temporarily enabling all sites fixed that problem for me.

I have the same constant refresh problem.
The site only works if I set noscript to allow everything globally or if I use IE (ouch).
It feels to me this site is overburdened with ad/tracking scripts and blocking them forces the site to break (admins anti block?).
I will try the 2010 theme idea and report back, also I do have the main domain whitelisted.
--edit--
2010 theme fixes it, so I guess a 2013 theme issue.
Yep - Dumped the 2013 Theme and went back to 2010 Theme.
Everything's groovy now.

2013 relies heavily on javascript so I imagine that is why you are having some issues. 2010 uses it much less but you may still see some issues relating to Javascript being blocked, such as menus not working and that sort of thing.

Gesture authentication gateway (Android)

Hi, there!
App allows to log in with discrete gesture to apps and web-sites that accept traditional text passwords.
I need volunteers to try it out, so that I could get data (gestures that people choose) for research - to anayse method potential problems and conceptual soundness.
If you would like to try this app and same time ok to install study version that requires Internet access permission (to send to me data about app usage) - please check it out.
Traffic used is minimal (app sends 1-2 Kb of data for every gesture, depending on its complexity, but guess you will know better from your traffic monitoring apps).
Instructions / how-to are here:
jo.jaborandi.org.ru
(sorry for not-active links, forum forbids posting links for new members)
apk is on Downlod page
Couple of known problems described on Known Problems page. However, app was tried on only few devices yet, so it's not impossible you'll encounter new problem - would be great if you report it.
There's Contcat form on site.
Just play with method in "Practice", or try it with accounts (not your mobile baking of course , or create test account on my site, if you don't want to use it with your personal ones.
When you fed up with the app, please visit Post-participation form page on site and fill form (12 questions + optional your own feedback). To access this form you will need to enter "Feedback code" (it is displayed in app's main menu).
App itself has help page, but it is not up to date. Site is - please read help there.
Please check at least beginning of text on homepage to figure out what is difference from any arbitrary gesture you like (to avoid confusion when starting to use it)
!!!Please don't use this app for tasks of critical security!!!
If you have any questions - let me know - I'll be checking this thread too of course
p.s. Of course app sends only data about use of itself, nothing else, sends it encrypted with my public key, I'm not a hacker etc. But I'm sure if you volunturely test android apps you know better than me that regardless of trustworthiness of app, you should have no sensitive data on your sdcard when you install app with Internet access.
p.p.s. I tried to optimize info-site for mobile, it should look ok in stock browser and in Dolphin, but I couldn't make it look good in Opera Mobile yet. Sorry for inconvenience.
Thanks and have a good evening everyone!
