How is the DAC in this compared to the 2012 model? - Nexus 7 (2013) Q&A

Hey guys and gals, wondering if anyone has any info on the DAC in one of these babies. The 2012 model was just barely better than me trying to recreate the music with my voice so I rather not make that mistake again. Does anyone have any links to reviews or anything, I believe its a qualcomm chip. I have the HTC One and it's acceptable but nothing special either. Anyways lets hope its better, I don't wanna have to get an iPad mini!

Not totally sure, but as you pointed out I'm not sure it could get much worse lol. So I'll go out on an unconfirmed limb here and say better by default?

Better than the ****ty DAC from the Tegra 3? of course!. Better than an ipad mini? I''m not sure, but at least the quality is good.

Well it can't be worse lol. That took away all media aspects apart from youtube..and even then. It should be comparable to the HTC One though right? I mean that isn't particularly amazing either but it is good enough for on the go.

I only had the N7 2012 for a week, and I thought it sounded like crap: amazingly awful!!
The N7 2013 is absolutely better. I am not using good headphones, but can tell the difference anyway. My Nook HD+ has great sounding audio out, so if sound quality is key, I'd steer you that direction (it's super cheap and takes CyanogenMod, but ain't super fast).
Basically I think it boils down to very much improved, and definitely good quality. Not an audiophile device i'd bet, but it isn't geared for that market anyway. If sound was your only hold-out issue, I think you can breathe easy and buy an N7 without worries.

Rogers said they are getting the captivate soon, and Telus announced that they are releasing the Desire tomorrow ($449 no contract)

no it dosent have a better cpu, imo snapdragon is better than hummingbird, but the hummingbird chipset does have a better gpu no doubt about it (if that means alot to you) personally tho as far as 3d graphics go the desire can do enough, if i wanted to play anything better id play my xbox lol
i read that Hummingbird is less power consuming compared to the Snapdragon
looks like im waiting for the captivate

I have the Galaxy S (Captivate) and it has an outstanding screen, really amazing. Excellent audio quality too. In theory the CPU/GPU combo is better but some design decisions by samsung and slow IO mean that you might still get lag sometimes.
It is a fine unit but I am returning mine this week and will probably get the Desire instead... simply because the GPS on the Samsung is totally useless.. if you need navigation it is a useless phone.
I've played with the Galaxy S and I HATED TouchWiz. If you root it and put a decent ROM on there it might be okay but I do love my Desire <3

Thanks for your input. But besides GPS, what else made you want to return the phone? Is it worth the switch over to the captivate for teh better cpu/gpu or is the desire just a better pacakge all togetehr?

Take my comments with caution as I have the SGS (will return it this week but still keeping it for a few days) but have not owned the Desire.
I think the Samsung is superior in general. The screen is just amazing and the CPU/GPU combo has a lot of potential for the future (no doubt better at games and perhaps some interface tricks). Audio is also outstanding (3.5mm jack with audiophile headphones).
My reason to return it was exclusively the poor GPS performance. And I mean poor to the point of not having GPS. It is just useless. It also has the lag issue but that probably present in the Desire too, to a smaller degree.
I'd say, if you don't need GPS, go for the Samsung as it has several advantages (nicer screen, GPU/CPU, lots of internal memory, great audio, BT3, great 720p video recording).
If you need a reliable navigation device, the Desire is a much better option. Plus it has its own little advantages like having a LED flash (the Samsung takes lousy photos at low light) and notification led.
I don't think TouchWiz 3.0 is that bad. I actually like it when it comes to look and usability (not sure about performance). My experience with Sense is a bit limited tho (only know it by playing with co-workers HTCs and from video reviews). Overall Sense might be better indeed, but that alone would not make me skip the Samsung.
When I return my Samsung I still have to decide if I'll get the Desire right away or just wait a bit more for the Desire HD (hope it can record video better than the current Desire).
Sad thing is that the right gadget does not exist. For me it would be a combination between the Samsung and the Desire, mixing features of both.

[Q] Currently got a Desire, would you stick or twist?

Hi all
Sorry if the mods think this question has been covered elsewhere but I don't think it has.
I currently have a Desire which has given me 18 months of solid use. I mainly use it for listening to podcasts on the loud speaker, email, Newsrob and Twitter. My main issues with it are the relatively poor battery (although alot better under CM7.1), tinny loudspeaker and the lack of memory for installing apps.
I really wanted a Galaxy Nexus until I started reading all the issues. Given that I want better battery life and a better loudspeaker would you get a Nexus or wait for something better to come along? Given that I'll be on a 24 month contract I'd be willing to wait 3 months
Thanks in advance
Oli
Honestly? I would love to tell you to buy the Nexus, but with all the issues at the minute (the volume ghost obviously being the main culprit) I would have to tell you to hang on to your Desire. At least until we get some kind of response from Google / Samsung letting us know what the problem is.
I was due to sell my Desire tomorrow, but I'm holding on to it for the time being as the Nexus is borderline unusable in low signal areas
I replaced my original HTC Desire with Nexus S ... and now Nexus S with Galaxy Nexus.
I hate the Desire, slow and small storage space.
Love my Nexus S, but ... I want a new toy !
---------- Post added at 03:57 PM ---------- Previous post was at 03:56 PM ----------
Btw, how much will you sell your Desire?
Just wondering if this kind of phone can still make some money

Exactly the same issue....I have a desire too. I am contemplating the GS2 or Razr also...
If what you want mainly is a better battery life, then I would suggest getting an external battery pack. Likewise with speaker; get a portable external speaker. I highly doubt there are many phones out there that provide a very good internal speaker and when they do they are usually "media phones" that are not very useful for much else.
If you really don't want to carry all the extra gadgets around then I would actually suggest getting cheaper phones that are not top of the line. The problem is that top of the line phones just keep getting more powerful and battery-hogging while battery technology is just barely catching up, and you can see that all these new phones are barely getting through a day with heavy use.

I was just going to send it off to one of those online recycling places, one offered my £105 for it.
I still have the box and everything, so when it comes round to it I may try my luck selling it elsewhere. I can't see getting much more for it though, tbh.
Not sure I can be bothered with ebay and Mazuma will give £90 for a working Desire.
I've already got a 5000mah external battery and a portable speaker but they are hardly ideal to carry around permanently.
I'm definitely going to wait until the volume issue is sorted as the Nexus seems pretty unuseable at the moment
Thing is that you will have the same questions in another 6 months time.
My last Android phone was a Desire and I loved it, but sold it 10 months ago because I just use my iPhone more.
But dropped for the Nexus last week and its a real step up. Can't say its better than a GS2, and it does have some downsides, the battery being one of them. But I think this will hold you well for another 18 months.

I'm in the same boat.. gonna wait until google/samsung respond.
I'm only going to get nexus devices now though, as Motorola have annoyed me with the xoom and the UK firmware debacle - lesson learnt is always try to get as clean a device as possible.
It's a shame really, because I absolutely love the device (and ICS) - it's a big step up from my Desire. Everything is just so much faster!
I just couldn't recommend buying one with such a big issue hanging over it. Hopefully we should get at least some kind of response from Google / Samsung today, which might clear things up
For me, the volume thing will get sorted, not a show stopper imho.
I'm sat with my 18 month old desire too wondering whether to make the jump.
I can't be having the sg2 as its got no LED notification, which rules out plenty of other phones too.
Stories coming out regarding battery usage on the GN are promising. Certainly on par and better than the Desire.
The GN camera cannot be any worse than the Desire, so as long as its as good as reported, although not world class, I will be happy enough. I have my dSLR for proper photos.
My biggest worry is the bloody size of the GN. Saw a mock up of it in P4U and it did seem big. LOL.
That's going to be the deciding factor. Size.

I also have a Desire and its been a great phone for me, but fingers crossed tomorrow the postie will bring me a Galaxy Nexus.
I've held both the S2 and and GN, width wise they're the same, the GN is slightly taller. But I actually preferred the GN in my hand, it felt more solid due to it's metal construction inside therefore also making it very slightly heavier. The tapered curves also helped as it felt more comfortable to hold in comparison to the S2 which is a bit square.
The led notification is a big plus for me too.
Im also thorn between the galaxy s2 and the galaxy nexus. I have faith in the software issues being sorted out, but when it comes down to camera quality and what not, I'm leaning more towards the S2 atm. Especially because its quite a bit cheaper, while having better hardware in some aspects as well. Hm...

Just traded up from a desire to the nexus. Go for it ! No regrets at all.
Battery bettery than desire.
Screen is fantastic.
Sound via headphones much better than desire.
Feels substantial (like my desire did).... more so than the gs2.
One thing i miss is the optical trackpad but not a dealbreaker.

always found the loudspeaker on my desire quite quiet. nexus seems louder although not as loud as my wifes experia.
headphone quality blows the desire away ! especially with some (built in) equaliser tweaks !
wilbur-force - what equalizer? Built in? I don't see anything...?
On topic though, I've upgraded from the Desire which I've had for 18 months to the Galaxy Nexus and I love it! I've not had any probs with the sound fault being talked about, so I can only say from my perspective, it's not a fair reflection on the phone.
The screen however, looks gorgeous, so much clearer and detailed than the Desire. And the speed? Brilliant! I had apps on my Desire which I thought were running slow due to internet connections.. I realize now that it was the phone. Everything runs so quickly on the Nexus. I also love being able to download all the apps I want without having to juggle what little memory space I have left.
The sound is also great on the Nexus. Through headphones (I use Sennheiser CX680i with my phone), the music's loud, clear and sharp. The loud speaker, though nothing particularly special, does seems louder and clearer than the Desire which I always thought was a bit muffled.
The interface looks good, much smarter and modern than Android 2.3, in part because of the screen quality, but all the layouts have been updated and made to look nicer, and somewhat like the new style of the Google websites. Only problem I do have is sometimes when trying to press an app by pressing the bottom of the screen, I catch the home button instead. Minor problem and it's something I'll get used to, but I do miss my buttons, especially the search button!
Overall, well chuffed with it. It looks good, feels good, and it's great to use. I'd recommend upgrading

Just one more thought to bare in mind, I'm finding a few apps I had on my Desire aren't available off the Market for the Nexus.
I assume that this is just a temporary niggle till devs catch up, but something else to consider so early on in the phones life cycle
Desire-Upgraders.....
Camera far better?
Battery life better?
I can't get over the size of it.... might have to head to a shop and have another hold to convince myself.
battery better even tho its not run in yet or smartass clocked.
Camera better
Equaliser ...... while playing music... settings and sound effects.

evo3d user has a few questions on the gnex if you guys would help me out plz

well sprint is getting the gnex in a few weeks and also the new evo in june, im still leaning toward the gnex but i had a few questions if someone can help me out with that so i can make my decision.
1. Dose the gnex have a good facebook integration?
2. how strong is Samsungs glass? (im coming from gorilla glass, and the new evo has gorilla glass 2)
3. I work out at the gym alot and beats audio comes in handy, was wondring if it can be flashed on the gnex or if something similar is out for the gnex?
I will thank for the help.
Why is Beats Audio helpful at the gym? Does it help you put up more weight?

1. No, however if you flash a ROM with the facebook sync etc etc...then yes.
2. The glass is just as strong as Gorilla Glass, its just unbranded. I have dropped my phone many times and its fine.
3. Beat's Audio CAN be flashed to the phone, but I never can really notice the difference, but I must say this phone has THE BEST audio output.
Honestly........if your going to wait......and be buying it on contract.
Just wait for the new Evo based off the One XL.
Krait vs TI OMAP is a no brainer go with Krait. You might as well get a phone that is going to be brand new and the latest and greatest hardware.....than the no offense, Galaxy Nexus which is beginning to get outdated and has been out for almost 6 months now.
I'm assuming your going to have 4G also and Galaxy Nexus gets pretty bad battery life on LTE/4G.....i'm expecting Krait with its integrated LTE radio to get much much better battery life.
It's nice to have gorilla glass and fortified glass, but it's still not really good to rely on that. If you drop the phone and its naked.....gorilla glass 2 or not, it's got a good chance of cracking or being damaged depending on the height and how it falls.
Pure google = no FB integration which IMO is muy bueno
Beats audio is just an EQ right now, but the Galaxy Nexus in general has a pretty good Sound Chipset. Beats audio is going to be deeper integrated though in the future, idk if the One X has it though.....I think it does where it will affect everything instead of just music player. By that, I mean playing things through browser and pandora etc...
But yea.......wait for the HTC Evo One, it's going to be worth it compared to the Nexus.

I have to say, the Krait will smoke the OMAP, no problem, but the 4460 is in no way "outdated" it still is the ONLY processor capable of perfect HD Video Decoding. My LTE Nexus gets great battery on the stock 1750mah, I get a good 6+ hours a day, you just have to learn to only use the phone when you actually need to. The glass is fine, I've dropped my phone from 6ft and it landed on the screen, no scratches, the contour saved the day. I've seen gorilla glass evo's crack easier than a nexus. Facebook integration, ITS FACEBOOKS FAULT, the Social API has been out for a few months now and the app has yet to implement it. (4.0.3) Beats aint ****. The Nexus has the best sound quality of any phone right now. Hands down.

Your battery is actually 1850 haha but you definitely don't get 6+ hours of display time.......If you mean running time....then yea 6+ hours is easy
I'm not saying the 4460 is outdated.....but it definitely can't compare. Also, its more of the SGX540 being outdated, it can hold its ground. But can't compare to the newer chipsets.
He's waited this long to upgrade....he might as well get the best of the best currently and go for the HTC Evo One, doesn't really make sense to get the Nexus "on contract" it'd be kinda a waste. It's a great phone definitely, but i'd rather have the best and newest hardware especially using the upgrade on contract

[Q] Worth the money?

Hello guys!
I'm thinking about buying the LG optimos G, but some people tell me very bad things about the LG brand. Well, i want to know if the phone it's good, in questions of performace, relation in price and quality and in durabillity.
It depends for how much you can get it?
In general it's a good phone. For me the only downside is camera, which pretty ****ty.
I think LG makes great devices, but their feedback sucks. It seems to be changed since G2, but OG seems forgotten. OG is great device, fast, capable, but camera is very bad. Other aspects are almost perfect, HD for 4.7 screen is perfect, image quality is gorgeous. I would say it's definitely worth money, especially in my country where i can buy it for 200-250$.
Well, I picked a refurbished one for 200$ - great value for the money.
Now it's running KitKat (PA), was surprisingly easy to install.

I saw a video and the camera seems very capable for my needs. Thank you for the feedback... I was scared because it's a low price compared to the specs.
Its low price is due to its age. The device is from late 2012 which easily beats some brands phones from late 2013 and even 2014. By the way, it's a flagship phone and is not forgotten. Kitkat is on the way for it. check my thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2652276&page=8
It's worth every cent

Hello guys!
I'm thinking about buying the LG optimos G, but some people tell me very bad things about the LG brand. Well, i want to know if the phone it's good, in questions of performace, relation in price and quality and in durabillity.

I've owned quite a few smartphones, but have never been as pleased with any as with the OG. What I wish it did have though is FM Radio and an IR blaster, but in terms of performance, this is a beast and rightly so because it was the most powerful smartphone released in 2012.
To be honest, there is few things that really irritate me.
- one of the worst cameras I've ever seen, which should be at least average since it was LG's flagship smartphone. In addition to that lens gets scratches really easily which causes photos to be even worse.
- no 5V output through usb (which means no otg without external power)
- really bad sound recording with microphone (it's ok with normal voice, but anything louder makes distortion).
And because of those, I regret buying this device. It's true, it has nice SoC for it's price, but for me it's too much, dual core would be just enough to handle android without any problem. As for durability, it's rather more vulnerable to drops than other phones because it's got glass in the back. Mine phone doesn't look like new, although I keep it in case all the time.
The best thing about this phone? Definitely screen. Is it worth buying? In my opinion - no, I'd rather have nice camera and/or microphone than powerful SoC, but it really depends what you expect from your phone.

Well dude, i apreciate your opinnion. It helped me. And i won't buy this phone. I don't wanna buy a phone only because his cpu, ram and screen... The other things are realy bad for the opinion of the guys here. And i want a phone with a good camera (not that high quality but a quality that make a good picture) and i just want a phone with a good battery, good cpu (i want to buy a Galaxy SIV Mini, and he have a dual core 1,7 ghz krait) and i want a phone with good features and with a good compatibity for headphones(i bought a Steelseries Flux in-ear and my old sony xperia arc s didn't suport it. Now because of that i'm using a GIO because it's nice to change the rom, don't have blocks and Samsung suports almost all . So it's because i don't want Sony. The phones of sony are realy bad for their price and the system it's realy ugly. Well, thanks for the feedback, i won't buy it like i sad :highfive:
Good camera is only on Nokia devices. Can you find a pleasing device in Nokia phones? I doubt. You still don't know about camera quality after 4.4.2 update. And the eco mode which turns two cpu cores off is there in the device which is so nice. Yet again, As you wish.
I bought ,new F180L (Korea version) for about $180 half month ago.It is a perfect phone for me, really faster than LG P880 ,because of 2GB RAM,Now my system is native f180L V20T KDZ Korean ROM,still perfect, and battery is very good ,I can screen on 5 Hours for a day with brightness 82% automatic.but the only problem is SMS has 80 characters limited, not 140 characters,Who can help me ....

It's related to your network.
I think it's wonderful despite its downsides
Hi there,
I just got this phone after some research. I was considering Sony Xperia Z, Galaxy S3 and this one. All of them within the same price range due to they are all now kind of obsolete, and despite its not-so-good camera I got the Optimus G. To be honest with you, I was going to buy a Moto G in the first place, but although I know some people who are quite happy with that, I think it's quite low range still.
To me, camera is not the main thing of a phone. Of course, I can't always take my DSLR with me, so at some point, having a phone with a decent camera is important. But I am going to use the phone mainly for Internet, apps, and so on... and I appreciate a good design as well, so having an S3 just because its camera is better?... no thanks. I've used an S3 for a little while (a couple of weeks or so) and I didn't see it as a huge step forward (but that's my impression). Lots of people have an S3, and it's not that I want to stand out, but I want to buy a phone that I like.
The camera is definitely its worst feature, but it's not that bad. It can take better pictures than previous generations, the problem is (in my view) that it's not as good as other high end devices. And technically speaking, the dreadful megapixel war, it happens on digital cameras as well. When you put a lot of pixels in a tiny sensor it sometimes creates more problems than benefit as each individual pixel may create electrical noise that will be translated into more "grain". And regarding videos, to me the most annoying thing is the micro-stuttering that sometimes happens. Maybe the bandwith needed for processing is too much for the encoder...
Anyway, so far I'm quite happy!
(BTW, there's a mod that apparently improves video/stills quality, although I couldn't install it properly on mine)
Regards
Congrats Dadivx! I also had the same choices as you did + nexus 4 + G2 16g! I chose G and I'm quite happy with it ^_^. I can't find anyone not pleased with it. Catching 4.4.2 wikk add to the pleasure for sure.

Well I buy this phone just a month ago, true the camera not so good for 13 mp. But there's camera option to choose HDR, it helps you get better picture. For me camera not most important, because I use my phone mostly for internet, Movies and games and this OG never upset me:good:
The screen also very nice for watching movie even hd video in youtube look very crisp. That my opnion about this phone, now I should go before you call me salesman:laugh:
camera...
but...what version do you have?
I have E975 (european version) with 13 mpx camera... and photo have a really good quality... way way better if compared with phone like htc one m7, glaxy s3, galaxy note 2, xperia Z, nexus 4, nexus 5, iphone (version < 5), moto x and all the other phone before 1/2 2013......
naturally last sony, nokia with 500mpx camera, s5, iphone 5 or other newest (and much expensive) phone have better camera.... but really don't think that without magnifying glass you can appreciate them....

Troll?
Sorry but people say even optimus x4 takes better pictures than our G. If it comes to camera our phone is real mistake. I know it won't have quality like normal camera, but at least in daylight it should capture some details, but it doesn't (not to mention when contrast is too big it looks awful). Photos might look good on 4,7" but not on something bigger or when you zoom in a little.
Phones you listed take the same or better pictures. Before posting stuff like this, check it earlier.

well I do agree with nobooya, the camera is the downside. even when I change the camera xml file.
If you are using this phone for everything except using the camera, this phone is really good.
but if you do taking picture most of the time, you probably can get G2,
at the end, of course if you can get this less than $200, I think it worth the money
I bought the Galaxy SIII. Thanks for answering

Pixel and Pixel XL Audio Quality

I'm on the verge of picking up a new phone. I originally wanted the Note 7, but waited and then heard about the LG V20 with its Quad Dac. I'm still holding out hope that the Pixel XL has some really nice audio out capabilities (at least better than my Xperia Z3v or Galaxy Note 3). I prefer the quicker updates the Pixel will get, but still. My main use right now would be the 128gb model as I use my phone everyday for listening to music (as well as typical phone stuff). I refuse to carry a DAP and a phone. So basically, what do you guys think? I haven't seen anything discussing the audio capabilities.

I have heard anything in particular with respect to audio quality either.....but if your looking for headphone quality I doubt it will get better than lg v20....if you looking for speakerphone quality then you may as well save some money and get the 6p with the dual front facing speakers and still get pure Google experience and updates.
Either wait for the V20 ( slow updates, hard to root, no development...I have a v10)
Or get the Pixel and a outboard DAC/like a Opportunity HA2.
The 6P with the dual front speakers is obviously the better option for video without headphones.
The best all around solution is 6p and use viper4android to get the quality audio experience you seek plus ffs plus current Android updates
Well, I was looking for a device that had a decent DAC built in. I'm not sure what the Snapdragon 821 brings to the table. I do not subscribe to using software/DSP/EQ to make the audio sound good. I use nice headphones to listen to my music so I don't want to muck it up with software that "fakes" the sound. I don't want to add external devices (such as my Cambridge DacMagic XS or Oppo HA-2) as I'm trying to trim down to a single device.
The best sound by far will be the Htc with viper4android as it rocks I doubt you will find any smartphone that has as good of audio as the Htc 10 with viper4android.

I was thinking about the HTC 10, but Viper4Android is something I wouldn't use. It seems to just be an EQ. I don't use EQ nor do I have any interest whatsoever in doing so. It doesn't increase the quality of the audio coming out of the device.

I'm in the same boat as you. I used a HTC m8 and purchased a Nexus 6p for pure android. The Nexus DAC was terrible so I traveled with both phones. Last month i sold my 6p in anticipation of the event because of HTCs history with audio. I'm regretting that now: I'm sure if the Pixel had a dedicated DAC Google would have played it up during the event.
I'm currently researching a phone to replace my m8: It seems like best are the LG G5, v10 upcoming v20, Axon 7, and of course HTC10. The HTC10 will probably be my next phone: it sucks because it seems like you always have to compromise something.

Agreed! To be honest, I find the Xperia Z3v merely acceptable. It is a little better sounding than my Galaxy Note 3 was. I'm not even looking for something "powerful" as I have 25-32ohm headphones. Though they are quite resolving and I enjoy using them around the house and when I go out in general. If in the end, the Pixel doesn't have good sound (ie... needs to be at least 24/192), and the V20 isn't going to work for me. I'll just keep using my external DACs.
Nexus6p or V20 would work for now...

This is the same reason I am still using Nexus 6 as my daily driver, i tried many phones (Note 4, N6P, Note 5, S7 Edge, Note 7 SD820 version etc..) in the last 2 years and no phone has better audio quality thru audio jack than N6. HTC 10 has some what better audio quality but I don't want to downgrade screen size below 5.5".
It infuriates me whenever people suggest Viper/Arise etc.. to make up for the poor DAC in the phone.
Hoping pixel phone has decent DAC.
I'm going to get the V20 due to the audio quality of the Note 7 (and I'm guessing it's not great on the Pixel either). Quad DAC is going to be amazing.

Funny how people criticize a phone for not having front facing speakers, but the HTC 10 doesn't have them and it is one of the best sounding phones out there right now... and yes, I have a 6P as well. I encourage everyone to save their judgement for when we actually get to hear it or someone gives a review on it.

As for the others who continue to suggest V4A or other software EQ/DSP... enlighten me on how painting a smiley face on a turd of a DAC makes it sound better? It doesn't... it simply alters the sound. I have multiple headphones that I use for different genres of music. THAT is what I use to alter the sound that I'm looking for. EQ and DSP are only meant to cover up the shortcomings of the headphones native sound signature. How would I know if I'm making things worse by polishing a Turd of a DAC by warping the sound signature? If I wanted to make things more "bassy" or "echoey" or whatever you want. I'd just pick up a pair of Beats headphones and call it a day. I'm sure it is a fantastic piece of software, again... it is completely opposite of what I'm looking for. Though, thank you for letting me know that it is out there. The 5 YouTube videos I watched let me know that it wasn't something I'd be interested in beyond a novelty.

I've used it. It helps, but it's still lipstick on a pig. The amp and DAC make a much larger difference. I liked Viper4Android on other devices but there will be no comparison to a phone with a vastly superior DAC. The HTC One M8 was by far the best audio quality I'd ever heard before because of its DAC and amp combo. Did much better than my other phones paired with V4A.

It's already known the pixel phones won't have a DAC and your interest level in pure sound quality is high and clearly outweighs the custom Roms or pure Android experience or early updates you get with Google phones...so I'm not sure what the hesitation is.... Get the phone with the DAC. Honestly the pixel phones are over priced and hardware specs are not comparable to the price.... I'll be keeping my 6p

You're right. I'll keep an eye on them, but the more I find out about it, I don't think it is the right device for me.
Thanks again!
There is some potentially good news here, Guys. I just read the hands-on with Anandtech and while they didn't mention much about the audio quality, they did say that it has the Qualcomm Aqstic audio codec. So, yes, it's Qualcomm, but it's of much higher quality than the "normal" Qualcomm. The Aqstic is the same DAC/codec used in the HTC 10 which I find little fault with. I think the V10 is still a tad cleaner with a better noise floors, but these are extremely minor differences. For pure Google, fast updates and a nice design, I can easily settle for a Qualcomm Aqstic audio solution rather than an exotic "quad DAC" which still hasn't been released or heard by any audiophile reviewers I don't think. I'm all in for this phone.
