New google maps always resets to main maps search screen (thus unusable) - T-Mobile, Samsung Galaxy SIII

Hey Guys,
I've searched and searched and searched (albeit I admit I suck at searching), and cannot find anyone talking about this. Thus here I am. Even the Google Product forms seem to have zero answers for me (and no one answering me there), and thus why I'm here. I also don't know if this is the right place to ask, but here goes anyway:
The new (pretty) Google Maps/Nav works on my S3 on Cyanogen mod: as in, I can search the map, use it and start using navigation ... BUT, if I switch to a different app (desktop screen, check sms, mail, settings, anything that isn't the navigation app) while live navigation is running, it'll reset back to the nav search screen BUT live navigation will keep running in the background (voice + GPS still running) and the map will NOT show any navigation.
To recreate for me the steps are:
1) Load up navigation and navigate somewhere, anywhere.
2) Switch to a different app.
3) Go back into navigation. Instead of being presented with the route (live nagivation) I'm presented with the nav search screen.
If I click the 'back' button, I get a regular ol' map. Searching for any route while the old nav is running will cause the Maps app to crash. The only error message I get if I get it to crash is: "Google Maps has unexpectedly closed."
I have tried re-installing the new Google Maps. I have even tried doing a complete phone wipe, also didn't help.
The only thing that sort of seems to do 'something', is if I clear the Google Maps/Navigation cache, force stop it, and then start again. Then I'll be able to use the quick app switch (pressing home button for a few seconds) to switch in and out, but that's about it .. and that only works for one nav route. After that first one if I try again it'll start crashing again.
Has anyone ever experienced anything like this? Or point me in the right direction?
Thanks!
p.s. I did post in the google product support form, no responses there yet

I can't reproduce the issue you are having (I'm on TW 4.1.2, though), but I have had my own set of issues with it. If you disable wifi and network location (to keep the Nlp wakelocks under control), sometimes when the GPS locks it still shows and old location. Only way to fix is to wipe data.
Since the fix is the same, I'm going with bug in the app. Old version was better in pretty much every way.

Don't forget that recently google made a lot of changes to maps. I'd imagine they know about a lot of the bugs people are having and will probably fix in the near future.
When you try to go back to navigation, do you select it from the notification area?

Yeah, I selected it from the notification area.
IF, and ONLY IF, I clear the Google maps area will navigation still work if I reselect it from the notification area and/or the quick switch thingy. But that niceness only lasts for one route :-/ After that, it's back to always search menu for me.
It all really sucks because for work I do get a lot of texts or calls, which means if I'm using navigation ... yeah ... I basically have to reset navigation every single bloody time I get a notification :-/

I've never used it, but what about Samsung Drive Link? Isn't that supposed to provide an interface for when you're driving? Maybe using it will allow you to switch normally. Thats just a complete guess, like I said, I've never used it.
Only other option, and probably the best one, is to use an older version of maps. I posted one in a similar thread to this in the Themes section.

I took your advice and found the old google map APK. <sigh> I already miss the integration and style of the new one, but heck you are so right: the old one works perfectly! Keeping that.
Thanks for the idea!
Now if we could only get Google to fix the new maps app bugs.

I'm under the impression they are working on it.

I have been having the exact same issue ever since the big Google Maps interface update.
I have a Samsung Galaxy S3, stock.

[Q] Google Navigation Troubles Getting Directions

I'm having issues with Google Navigation and I'm wondering if someone can help.
Let's get this out of the way first. I'm running the CM7 Nightlies, but this isn't a GPS issue. I've done the GPS fix. GPS is working fine. I can see myself in Maps to a 20m accuracy even when I'm in my concrete bunker of an office building. Google Maps sees me just fine.
I can scan around in Maps and I'm getting the satellite layer updates. I know where I am and I can see where I'd like to go. I can click on the location and the Places update comes up. I can surf around in there, read reviews and do all that that app offers. So far, so good.
If I click on the Get Directions it will provide me with a list of directions. Awesome. I know where I am, I know where I'd like to be and now I know how to get there. Great!
If I click on the Navigation button Google Navigation comes up. It goes to "Getting Directions" and will just sit there... forever...
I've cleared the app data. I've even reinstalled Maps. It still will not work. Is anyone else having this issue?
Just another piece of information, if I install Waze and all of this works fine. I can even see other Waze users driving around town live. It's not a GPS tracking issue then either. Should I just switch to Waze?
Wow... I can't believe nobody else has this issue. Has anyone else tried this?
Because I really hate it when someone has an issue, fixes it themselves and never lets anyone know how, I bumped this thread to post what the problem was and how I fixed it. That way, if anyone does a search for this problem, they have both a reference and a resolution.
I believe the problem was my overzealousness in deleting apps that I didn't use or didn't believe I used. When flashing a new ROM, the first thing I always do is go through the /system/app folder and delete the crap I didn't want on my phone. One of the things I always deleted was the GoogleQuickSearchBox.apk. I never use the quick search widget because I always pull up the browser for Google searches.
I updated to CM7 Nightly Build 39 yesterday and, instead of pulling that APK I decided to test the GPS, Maps, Places and Navigation interaction. I was able to get an almost instant GPS lock. I could scan around Maps and get the layer updates. I could find the places I wanted in Places. Then, for the real test, I attempted to get driving directions to a local restaurant. It came up in a couple seconds.
So, the morals of the story are to not delete things when you aren't completely sure of everything they are tied to and don't give up solving problems on your own when nobody else is able to help you. I hope this helps someone.
no problems here. i think u deleted something.

Syndicate Rom google search issue

First post and would just like to thank everyone on here who has paved the way thus far in modding our phones. I was very skeptical at first but i have gotten the hang of everything since last week.
Anyways just flashed the syndicate EB13 madhouse rom and it works great.
I am having issues with my google search widget. Every time I try to do a search a pop-up window asks if I would like to use my location.
Agree or Disagree
Either way i choose it pops right back up.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
I have know posted a video. I really do not want to have to reflash this ROM. The first few times i did it my phone kept going into airplane mode.
Message: Use My Location
Do you want to allow Google to use location for improve search results and other services.
It keeps popping up over and over. I really want to use my google search instead of pulling up the internet. Any suggestions would be aprreciated
PM me for link to vid since I am too new to post and outside link. I have searched and searched for anything close to this and I would its as simple as possibly deleting the app and reflashing it or something.
Maybe try going into your settings> locations etc and turning location services on. Search and then turn off. Maybe that will work around it? Then try searching again without services on and see if the pop up still comes up. Otherwise, you can always search through the address bar in the browser. Set your search engine through the settings in the browser...

Turn by turn navigation on wp7.

Part of my upgrade from orange was free orange maps. Obviously had no need for it with android by decided to check it out.
What surprised me is that its actually a workable sat nav, fully voice guided and it orientates itself via the compass too, same as google navigation (only slower as the accuracy of google navigation is better)
My main point is that why can only orange do this on wp7 and no one else?
Some other carriers do it. They say its officially coming with Mango.

I did read that this morning and im sure with nokias help will be very good. I was just wondering why orange and some other carriers have got apps that do it, yet theres no third party apps that do it properly.
Look for Drive on in the marketplace... i think it may support europe. It's still beta but does turn by turn and voice.
You really need on board storage for pan EU use

Drive on is horrible. There is no landscape, no compass orientation, the voice is so low, you need to hold it to your head to hear it, the voice is unintelligible, the voice gives the next turn too early, the Speedo does not work, no 3d, there is no search by name (you can'tsearch for a business name, you must enter an address.
honestly, bing maps is better than drive on.
/rant
sorry about that. On the plus side, it's free. It is in beta, so maybe these problems will be sorted out.

Anyone try the new "Turn by Turn Navigation" app (released 26 May 2011)? I just downloaded the trial version. I am planning to give it a go on my way home tonight. Looks promissing!

So far has the cleanest UI for any of the nav Apps. A - B is still my favorite but Morton (the developer) pulled it from the marketplace in lue of copyright stuff...
A - B had 3D view.... I dont know why but for some reason I am hung up on that. Before my Samsung Focus I had the Touch Pro 2 and was running tomtom and then also would use android on it from time to time. I LOVE Google Navigator. That's sort of what A-B reminded me of with the 3d view using the sat/aerial view
I've spoken with the developers of Drive on, Silver Nav and Turn by Turn Nav and they all say 3d view WILL be implemented just not for at least 3 to 4 months. Pretty much right along with Mango. I dont know anything about coding but if an app that has one guy alone working on it could impliment it how could a team of developers working on these other apps not. Unless, again its some copyright stuff which I wouldnt be suprised of.
Just my 2 cents. Right now turn by turn is the best available on the market.

I tried "Turn by Turn" by GPS Tuner and found it fantastic.
The UI is clean and polished.
Voice is loud (English only)
The app is really reliable and fast.
You shall not hesitate.
Turn By Turn = WIN!
Just downloaded the trial 'Turn By Turn' and it works in Australia... The UI is the most polished of all the navs I've seen for WP7 and is WP7 worthy...
After a minute of playing around I committed and bought it...
Turn by Tirn
Turn by Turn is great. Voice is nice and loud and I find it to be accurate. I have also tried Silver Navigator and find it to be OK. I have now loaded the trial version of GPS Voice Navigation and will be trying it today.
I'll be interested to know how GPS Voice Nav works for you. I tried it yesterday, and it had some real problems (I described them in the other thread).

OK tried GPS Voice Navigation and had some issues. Alerts are given in feet rather than tenths of a mile. I can't sit there and try to determine how far 2360 feet is. It also tells me to "turn" about 50 feet before the turn. These are two behaviors that are different than a dedicated GPS and NOT an improvement.
Ok,
After one week of use I can say I find Turn-by-Turn Navigation' really great. It works well.
The only bug I notice is the following: when there is a rundabout, it says "At rundabout..." and nothing more, no direction, it does not tell which exit is the right one (?!) Am I the sole one?
I can't find Turn-By-Turn anywhere in the Marketplace. Any help?
Just went onto marketplace then... Turn By Turn is now at the top of the 'Navigation' section so you shouldn't even have to search...

[Q] Working Navigation Software?

Do you have any suggestions for offline Navigation that actually likes ICS / the GN?

Google maps with navigation works fine in the UK at least... but having it all "on board" is, I guess, a bit more reliable if you're heading into areas you may not have a data connection. I know you can now pre-cache map areas, but does the navigation part cache the whole route? I doubt it, and if you happened to go off route where you had no connection, you're a bit stuffed!
That's why I also have Copilot 8 installed... which works BTW.
Copilot live however does not :-(
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA App
I thought Copilot Live didn't work either but... when I first installed it, it would load and go through some of the initial setup and then either give me a black screen or force close, so I reported it through the android market and left it installed nevertheless.
Today I tried to open it just to check again that it wasn't working and for some odd reason... it loaded up and asked me for my account password and downloaded my maps.. and it's still working.

I think it does cache a bit, as I've used it in areas where there's no connection.
It also has a low-res version of the maps that it flips to if it loses data for too long (no detail, just lines for roads IIRC). I think that's small so it covers a much larger area.
sygic does not work as well
Never mind, Copilot Live loads and you can select destination and it calculates the route but as soon as you say go it force closes...
Huh....so copilot and navfree works?
Hm at least 2 alternatives..
CoPilot Live Pro 8.2.0.368 seems to work ok.
The first time I installed it, it went through some setup stuff, but then kept minimising itself to the background. Trying to start it again didn't help.
I rebooted the phone and now it runs fine. I haven't tried navigating with it, but I've entered a destination and pressed "go". It correctly calculated a route, showed my current location, and was ready to go.
I'll try it on the road tomorrow.

Well. It was working. Now it just keeps dropping into the background again.
It doesn't "force close" it just waits in the notification bar saying "tap here to maximise Copilot". If you tap it maximises for a few seconds showing the splash screen then drops into the background again.
Anyone know any workarounds?
I discovered that if I am just patient and keep clicking "tap here to maximise Copilot" that eventually it will work on the third or forth attempt.
However, I have just tried turning on "force 2D acceleration" and so far Copilot has started up perfectly every time. It's also starts up much quicker. I don't know if that is just coincidence and it will go back to playing up.

I turned force acceleration off again, and Copilot is still starting up quickly first time every time. No idea what I have done but I hope it stays this way! I've tried rebooting a couple of times and it seems to be fine.
you can tell all Google Maps to cache all of the route. Works with GNavigation too.
Navigon is working now. just downloaded the map by Wlan. and the app started. did not had a chance to test it on the road.
Ndrive works just fine
Navigon installs - but when you get to the end of the 1.8GB Europe map download, it says download failed!
I logged it hoping to find a solution!

Use of offline Google Navigation possible?

Hey guys,
I was wondering if it's possible to download the Maps from Google for some countries to use the Google Navigation without the need of a data connection. I'm driving down to Italy from Germany in a couple of weeks and would love to use Google Navigation but I don't want to pay for data roaming in Germany, Austria and Italy.
Alternatively I also have Navigon on my phone, but it seems like Navigon isn't compatible to HTC Car which I'd like to use as I am going to listen to music through my phone as well. Also tried https://play.google.com/store/apps/...CwidHcua2Vuc2hpbm4uaHRjY2FsZW5kYXJmaWx0ZXIiXQ..

You can hit the sub-menu menu (3 dot) button in google maps open and select "Make available offline". Then you simply drag the rectangle over the area you want to cache, click done and it will download what you have selected.
Not sure if there is a size limit to what you can cache, but I believe in the settings you can specify some cache options.
I tried that, but it can only cache the size of London which is like 60 MB, if I try to select a whole country it always says "Selected area too large. Please zoom in."
I remember from my old Windows Mobile phone about 4 years ago, that it was possible to download all the maps I wanted, even whole countries.
Try Sygic. Offline navigation tool, 7 day free use.

You can save a country, but it will be saved in sections limited to a size similar to the one you mentioned.

You can cache maps for offline viewing, but unfortunately Google navigation still appears to require a data connection to work. I've tried many times to navigate in airplane mode, but doesn't work. A quick Google search revealed that many others are experiencing the same issue .
I think there would be some potential risk by using google maps offline.

No.
I don't know why Google just doesn't give us proper offline navigation already. Its probably to protect the other developers. After trying all the others I think it's still the nicest nav software in form and function. When you enter a destination it does seem to cache the route but if you deviate or exit the program you are screwed. Not sure if they improved that in the latest versions though.
