Force/increase 4G connectivity vs 3G, auto tethering when connected to power - Sprint Samsung Galaxy Note II

I've got a two part question for some issues I'd like to address while on 4G (some I've called Sprint about, others I know you guys will have the answer since I'm rooted) that I hope to resolve.
My issues with Sprint is that if I'm on 3G and looking at images via websites, pics obviously load slower, but they're always nice and crisp. I notice that when I happen to be on 4G and go look at images, suddenly they load super grainy. I spoke to someone else who is also on Sprint w/ an LTE 4G phone (not a Note II, something else) who experiences the exact same problem. I've called Sprint about it, but I get the usual run around saying they're addressing the issues, fixing towers, etc. When I first started getting 4G in my area about 3 months ago, it was BLAZING fast, connected the second I came off the freeway and stayed on strong. I realize over time that I'm sharing the same signal with others, but damn.
My issues that I'm hoping you guys can assist with is in regards to the phone staying connected to to 4G more via changing thresholds. As I id before, it was awesome. Now it's gotten to the point where I or the phone have to be near a window, or occasionally I can leave it on the top edge of my couch...but if I happen to handle the phone to answer a text messages, it'll often drop back into 3G. The problem is that I use my phone tethered to my laptop for watching TV....Top Gear, Family Guy, etc that I stream. On 4G it's great, but once it drops to 3G it turns into a buffering nightmare and some shows/sites can't handle jumping around for time frames, so lets say if I'm 15 min into a show, go into 3G and come back into 4G, the show never recovers and I've got no choice but to restart the show. I'm just curious if there's a way to change at what point/signal strength that the phone wants to swap back and forth and basically ask it to stay on 4G more often than not when I'm at home where I actually get 4G.
As for tethering, I'm a stock rooted ROM using TrevEMod tethering because the stock tethering app won't stay turned on, I'm assuming due to using the stock ROM. What I'm curious about is a way to have the phone automated in that once I plug it on, the tethering app turns itself on and then back off again once unplugged from a power cord. At one point I'd used some app where it had me enter parameters to do this, but it only worked to turn on the stock tethering app which won't work.
Bottom line is I'd like my phone to stay connected to 4G more often than not, turn on tethering when plugged in and turn it off when not.

as for the tethering, if you are running the stock deodexed rom, there is a mod you can flash to make the native hotspot work then you will be able to use Tasker or however you automate it turning on. if you are running stock odexed you could always flash stock deodexed, if you were intent enough on making it work.
here is the hotspot mod: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2232553

I truly don't know if the stock ROM is odexed or deodexed, I just did a simple rooting procedure and nothing more so I could install a tethering app. Maybe I'm just being naive, but coming from my Epic days where I rooted, ROM'd, kernal'd, OC'd, etc days where I removed tons of apps, added others, etc I never was able to get battery stats/calibration to work correctly, which in turn wrecked havoc on that phone...phone would get super laggy, bog and stumble, then I'd reset the phone and I'd go from 20% battery life to 3%, then realize why the phone was freaking out. Now that I've got this Note II, it works great, I've never felt the need to OC or anything (I wouldn't mind removing stock apps but the SDX Stock App Removal Tool doesn't work), so I'm kinda hesitant in flashing any sort of ROM for fear of reliving past experiences...right now the phone simply works great, I'd just like a few simple features. Any input to sway my decision?

i hear ya, i too like a nice stable setup with everything working. your system is probably odexed if al you did was root, but if you have a file explorer app, when you go into /system/app, you will see each .apk also has an associated .odex file. the deodexed rom has the odex part added back into the apk, but otherwise is exactly the same, no tweaks or anything, every bit as stable, and with nothing removed, but it is easier to make mods for a deodexed rom, such as the hotspot mod!
the decision is yours. it is always a bit of work to flash a rom, but this is defintiely a way to keep the stabilty and reliability, and have the hotspot working the way you want it to! the rom is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2241930, if you choose to go this route. this is exactly my setup, with the hotspot mod, and it runs great.

I'll read the thread, thanks for the link. Any suggestions for something that will enable the tethering app automatically based on being plugged in, and I've had no luck finding anything in regards to people changing thresholds for the 4G connectivity.

no problem. the app Tasker from the market does things like that, i think it costs a few bucks but it's well worth it. and perhaps there are others.
for the 4G thing, i don't see any setting for that. there are other people who know a lot more about network stuff than i do. there might be a dialer code menu where you can set to receive LTE only, but sorry i can't be of more help there. good luck and have fun!

In HDR menu there is a LTE only mode..... beware you wont receive calls or texts so if you have google voice set up then perfect

[Q] rooted 3g drop on wireless tether.

Im running Skyraider 3.5 sence with s-off radio 2.15.0.07.28 build 3.26.605.1
Im running into a problem with wireless tether 2.0.5 pre 14 or any version will stop working after a few mins. i have looked for something on here but I have been unable to find a fix. So I'm wondering if there is one. If there is im sorry for the repost. i can't seem to figure it out.
If any knows the right way to fix this im all ears.
This was one of the biggest reasons for rooting my phone. It worked great before 2.2 came out. Once I went to 2.2 rooted it stoped completely. I rooted into 2.2 using a method from Mejdam on youtube. I even tried the stock method that was on here to go back to 2.2. Then rerooted with unrev. still nothing.
Thanks.

I seldom ever use my wifi tethering...but when I noticed the version number in your post, I decided to upgrade, and found 2.0.5 RC1. I decided to test this new version out because last time I used wifi tether, it worked fine. I think I was using pre-10 (it came with SkyRaider 3.3). Well, I am noticing the same problem. It starts out just fine, really fast & responsive, then after a minute or so it goes intermittent, the 3G icon comes and goes and it just becomes worthless. We are both using SkyRaider 3.5. My baseband radio is newer though.
Anyone else?
UPDATE: if you have a file: "\system\etc\sysctl.conf" then rename it, reboot your phone and try wifi tethering again. This fixed this problem for me.

Rename the "sysctl.conf" to what?
I've also been having this problem for a long time now and so far haven't found any fixes.
I looked for the file you are talking about and cannot find it using Root Explorer, either I don't have it or it's hiding really well.
Also does anyone know where I can get the stock 3G Hotspot app?
VZ has blocked you on certain tethering traffic due to 3g abuse without the tethering contact ($20/mo).
I have experienced VZ blocking various 3g tethering activity on my previous phones. This block is based on the phone's EIS#.
When I changed phones, the block was gone until I spent a couple solid days on my corporate vpn.
I've recently been blocked from my corporate vpn again. I don't know what steps I'll take to get it re-enabled, but I suspect I'll enable their tether contract, to open my access, but shortly cancel (pro rate cost).
I don't know when i'll take time to do this..
Let me know if you have success with this.

I had a gut feeling that VW had something to do with it once 2.2 came out and they offered the 3g hotspot for $25. Ill keep looking to see if anyone is able to get around it. I'm not gunna hold my breath though.
It's not a 2.2 thing our a smart phone thing. This has existed since my first experience in 2004, on a basic cell phone tethering with 1X.
It's easier for VZ to block us rather than hold us to the End User Agreement.
I should be able to call VZ soon to enable their tethering, see if it opens my access, then cancel the tethering service for a prorate charge of 1 day.. By the weekend.

From what I recall reading in the past, Verizon cannot tell if you are tethering when using the 3rd party wifi tethering application. Are your comments based on your own experience, or can you supply a link that suggests Verizon is blocking our tethering applications.
EDIT: Just FYI, I found another thread, specifically on this subject:

I just renamed mine to "sysctl.conf.bak"
The file above was added by myself back when first posted that it would "increase your 3G speeds." And it actually did for me. But I suspected it when I tested the latest version of the wifi tethering application. When I renamed the file, things got instantly better as far as tethering goes... I have been using my wireless tether application for a little over an hour now with absolutely no problems.
So this was a guess on my part, but my tethering is now working fine and not dropping my connection. I hope this works for you as it has for me. If you don't have the file on your phone, then it's time to look elsewhere.
(don't forget to reboot after renaming the file)

My comments point-out that VZ can safely assume you're abusing tethering by the amount of data used within a certain timeframe. -- an amount that is not typically possible when only using phone and apps (non-tethering traffic).
Thinking back on the first time I encountered this in 2004, I did call VZ tech support. This was their answer.-

[Q] No Service, No Data, WiFi Slow...

So, i rooted my phone today, bricked it a couple times, then fixed it(this doesnt matter)
Ok, so i was really excited to get this rom:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=864445
(I got the trinity, NOTthe Frozen one)
Long story:
So, I install the rom on my phone, no problems...but it seems I'm missing something and I've looked everywhere because i can't sign into Gmail, even with WiFi...Then again, I have no service...3g, or 4g, or for calling. Absolutely no bars in one of the strongest areas of my house. I'm thinking I'm missing some type of modem... I cant find it, I think i found it previously but from a different website, and they didn't even give instructions. Please help me because this is an awesome rom and I don't want to go back to stock rom.
Short story:
-no service, or data service, either.
-Missing some type of "modem" to enable data
-Airplane mode wont turn off. When clicked, it keeps going on and off. Please help!
Thanks in advance.
Not sure if this helps but I was getting major signal drop on 4g. Come to think of it 3g too. I don't think you are missing anything if it boots up and opens. Sometimes devs make tweaks internally that may not be known to us. I know when signal is constantly searching you get major battery drain
UFE (Unidentified Flying Epic)
Well, at least it's not just me.
For me the only way I've found that reliable works is to Odin back to DI18 and start from scratch.
Unfortunately, I basically can't touch CWM afterwards, because doing anything in it seems to bring the bug back.
Hopefully there's a fix out there for those of us that are continually plagued by this rather bizarre issue.
Seems rather strange that reflashing the modem with Odin doesn't even do the trick.
Just to.let u know you said you bricked your phone a few times. If you brick a phone it doesn't come back. You can't brick a phone a couple times. To answer your question sounds lime you need to reflash the.modem. go into.settings and about phone and see what your baseband version is. It should the same as the software you are on. If you are on dk28 then it should be dk28. Also I would upgrade to eb13 since dk28 is ikd school now and to many bugs that were not fixed. Just my 2 cents. Good luck

Wi-fi broken after root.

Hey guys. I just rooted my E4GT and didn't install the kies application first. My phone is rooted and everything seems to be functioning except for the wi-fi. Whenever I go to turn on the wi-fi, it turns on, scans for a network and then the wi-fi turns off again. Am I boned? PLEASE HELP!
epic 4g wifi broke
Same for me, after Rooting with oden the wifi searches and then turns off, any help?
I'm sorry you're having the same issue. I haven't found any solutions yet. Would you please keep me in the loop if you find one? Isn't there an IRC channel where some of these guys go and help answer questions?
Something went wrong with your flash. No worries tho you just got to go back to stock and root again. Are you familiar with Titanium Backup? If you are back up all your user apps + data. Then ODIN back to factory restore. Then auto-root with this method. Lastly restore all your apps with titanium
this happened to me but i fixed it easily
forget your wifi
connect again with password and repeat it again until it works maybe 3 times

This is good advice. Do what Kogama recommends and you should be up and running. If not, hit the "HowTo's" link in my signature and follow the steps for a Hands Free Reset. Fast. Simple. Effective. Probably a good idea to do one anyway when you make major changes such as rooting or ROM hopping.
after i rebooted the wifi stopped working and i cant get it work again actually..where is this hands free reset i cant find it only the activation which I also did again
Just_s and Kogama - That method did not work for me. By time I had typed in the WPA key, the wi-fi antennae had already shut itself off.
BUT
KelvCast - your method totally worked. Is it me or does this antennae get piss poor signal strength? But I thank you VERY much for helping me. I'm all good to go. Now on to trying to figure out my write permissions on my Kindle Fire =/
for kelvcast's way you have to completely change your modem back too right? ....damn
im running a completely different rom btw...

"Hands free"is the same as "activation". Sorry that didn't work for you. The only time I had an issue with WiFi, "forgetting" the connection and then logging in fresh was what worked for me. Any other data/ connection issues I've had have been resolved via the hands free reset.
As far as your other question, you don't need to change modems, but it won't hurt if you do.

I have the same problem as OP. Rooted using the Zerg exploit, running stock ROM. When you turn the Wifi on, it only gives you like 5-10s before it turns itself back off, also the MAC address field shows unavailable.
Assuming it's an issue with the root process. The odd thing is mine worked fine for over a week, and just randomly died today while trying to connect to wifi at school. Was going to reflash stock kernel with ODIN, and see if it effects it at all.

My WiFi is working fine with the method I used. Rooted phone and everything.
Not sure if I will be keeping Sprint anyway.
Did a speed test on my moms old LG Verizon phone running at 600mhz. Compared it to my Sprint SGSII running at 1.2ghz dual core. On the LG, I get a little more that 1/2 a meg per second (which is decent in this area) as compared to .01 - .1 meg per second on my SGSII. So there is a BIG difference in speed. I know its not the phone, but the network. Going to do my due diligence and keep the sprint phone for at least another day. But if it goes as it is now, I will be going to a Verizon store Sunday and switching carriers again. Sprint doesnt seem to be better that TMO. Sunday is my 3rd day so if I return everything to sprint, I get a full refund.

Yeah it's hit or miss. In my neighborhood, my buddies with Verizon pull down 1/3-1/2 more bandwidth, but my phone works in any basement in the area and theirs doesn't, go figure. In the mid-town/downtown areas both carriers perform about the same around here (Omaha, NE).
Now if you're talking WiMax and LTE thats a different story altogether.
As for the Thread topic: I think I know what broke mine- I restored a bunch of apps using Appextractor, and think restoring the "Settings.apk" in the system section toasted it. I tried flashing a few different kernels to no avail (Did not try the rogue kernel, however).
Lost WiFi after rooting Epic 4G Touch
I have been fighting this problem for a week now, finally I installed clockwork mod following a youtube video titled (How to Install Clockworkmod on the Samsung Epic 4G Touch - Latest) sorry cant post link new user arent allowed to post links. my phone was already rooted. I now have my WiFi Back.
Hope This Helps
I have tried every method I have been able to find.....Still no wifi. I rooted via this guide (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1265429). After following that guide my wifi did not work. Just scans and then turns off. Does not even see any networks. I flashed the stock kernal. Still no wifi. I don't know what else to do. I am going to try a factory restore. If that doesn't work I might need to send my phone in.....This blows.

[Q] Wifi loses connectivity after period of inactivity

Hello,
I've searched around the Epic 4G Touch forums as best I could, but sadly I couldn't find anything that was exactly this problem (although I found some interesting articles about wifi sleep time but they don't seem to apply). I'm experiencing an annoying issue where I can connect Wifi just fine, but if the phone is left for a small period of time (~10 minutes), wifi appears as if it's still connected, however it cannot send/receive data. When this happens, the wifi status says it's "connected", but there is no data connection. The only way to to get the data back is to turn off wifi, wait for 3/4G connection to initialize, then turn Wifi back on to refresh it...then it's fine again until I set the phone down again.
I had this problem on stock EL29, so I rooted and flashed Phantom Blazer ROM (very cool ROM, but I'm still experiencing the same issue). After reading the threads on here about wifi sleep times (apparently they're backwards with ICS roms), I've experimented with every setting, yet I still have the same issue--Wifi is fine as long as I'm using the phone, I set it down, after about 10 minutes pick it back up, says it's still connected, but no data connection.
has anybody experienced this problem with this phone? I'm about to unroot my phone/go back to factory so I can take it in to a Sprint store, the problem is they (trying not to be offensive) don't seem to know very much about this device. I thought I'd ask the pros before I return it, get an iPhone, and have to eat my words about how cool Android is vs. iPhone in front of all my friends. I'm hoping there's a reliable ROM or app that can resolve this vs. having to just replace the device!
Thanks for your help!
I'm not the only one
I'm not the only one with this problem:
edit: I can't post links to androidforums.com or anywhere else, but this same problem is all over the interwebs and nobody has a solution.
I'm sure it's not my router as my ASUS tablet/laptops/girlfriend's iPhone experiences no connectivity problems. I'm thinking this is a hardware problem with some of these devices. I will unroot/reset to factory tonight and let you know what happens.
What channel is your router on? And what type is it A/B/G/N?
This is s known TW ICS bug, most likely kernel related. Almost everyone is having this issue and there is no fix until Samsung decides to repair it. There are quite a few posts similar to this one. If you're using XDA's search function, it's not very good. Try using Google next time and search XDA that way.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Xparent ICS Tapatalk 2
Hey guys, thanks for the response. Just before I unrooted/reset to factory I tried one last solution--download an app called "Wifi Fixer". It has resolved a lot of these problems. It's not 100%, but after testing it for a day so far, I've only had to manually refresh the connection once or twice. It's a lot better, even liveable, and I won't be resetting to factory afterall, at least not until Samsung provides an update. So if anyone is having the same problem, try Wifi Fixer, hopefully it gives you a similar level of success...I'm not super happy about having to run another background process all the time, but it doesn't seem to affect battery, and the fix it provides is worth it to me.
Cheers!
Huh - a couple of things. Noticed this problem crept back in FF18 and didn't know why until I went back and checked the wpa_supplicant.conf that I'm using. The line ap_scan=2 was missing; after adding it back in the signal strength is back to full and stable.
I'll bump the thread but it appears the config changes here still hold after all:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1569348
This should also avoid having the WiFi fixer there as you can specify the country in wpa_supplicant.conf manually.
Thanks for looking in to this! A couple questions from a noob like me though:
When you say the problem crept back in FF18 ... what does that mean? Is that something that exists in the "stock" version of the Epic 4G touch from Sprint?
The manual config file tweaks you're describing ... is that something I can perform myself?
Basically I'm wondering if it's "safe" to revert to stock in order to get consistent wifi signal, or if it's something I'm experiencing because of the ROM I'm using.
Thanks!

GNEX Without service

First I would like to thank everyone on this forum. Being a Noob to rooting I have learned so much here.
I will be picking up my new Galaxy S5 tomorrow and I want to keep my GNEX for a music player. I believe I will still be able to connect it to wifi and load it with music via USB. Any suggestions as to how I should configure it before I lose service?
I have Vanir ROM running 4.2.2 with DirtyV kernel.
You don't have to do anything. It doesn't matter if you have service on it or not. It will still work on Wi-Fi
Sent from my Nexus 5
yea I have been off of Verizon service for long time now(almost a year)
what I do is Google on airplane mode. then you can just turn on wifi(bluetooth.and wifi are able to be toggled on/off without affecting airplane mode)
I get actually good battery life on this thing that way lmao!
but yea, you can always change your setup later by just using wifi to download your Roms/kernels.
not having service won't affect ability to install roms.
but make sure you do toggle airplane mode on lol. cuz without service(i don't even have sim in anymore) it will be constantly trying to connect to a tower to get a signal, and will horribly drain your battery very fast.
(I've also removed BIP.apk and the stock messaging apk since they always show as running apps and I don't need them anymore I figured just remove them to free that ram up. you will have to remove them every time you flash a Rom though remember, if you decide to go this route as well)
Someone made a flashable zip over at Rootz that disables everything that makes your device a cellular device.
The OP is for Jelly Bean, but comment #50 made one for Kit Kat.
I know it's taboo to link over there, but I don't see anything in the forum rules:
