Best Kernel for Overclocking Galaxy Nexus - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

I'm thinking of flashing a different kernel to my Samsung Galaxy Nexus so I can overclock the CPU/GPU. I've noticed that franco.Kernel and Trinity seem to be among the most popular kernels, but I'm not sure which one to choose. In your opinion, what is the best kernel for overclocking and why? FWIW, I have the Verizon model of the phone (toro) and am currently running CyanongenMod 4.1.2, which is based off of Android 4.2.2.

Antutu or CF bench are good apps.. And a warning: overclocking will decrease the life of your phone! Be careful! If you want to use your phone a little longer I wouldn't do it (I wouldn't anyway because I think this phone is very fast especially with Android 4.3)..

Hi,
I've decided to bump this thread because all other GNex OC threads are very dated.
I recently received the extended battery 200mah and I'm ready to overclock. I wish to retain battery life to have screen time 3-4 hour on moderate usage.
I'm current rooted on stock ROM, and I wish to simply stay with stock ROM provided battery life will remain the same (perhaps I have to undervolt)
I want to hit 1.5GHz CPU and 384MHz GPU...which is what the OMAP and PowerVR SoC's true default clocks.
Given my circumstances of stock ROM, which kernel would give me the best stability/battery life? Any kernel that somehow has OC settings built in or do they all require me to buy setCPU?

They all use setcpu or trickster mod. Regarding the kernel you just should try some out.

What type of OC are you running?
Do you actually notice it day to day usage? I cant think of any apps that could benefit from it besides gaming which I do very little of on mobile.
How has it affected your battery life?

I don't OC myself. I want my gnex to last some longer. OC will wear out tour CPU.. I die it once for a day maybe two but didn't notice any improvement. I was at 1.5 GHz or something.. I think it may have some speed improvements but your battery will drain like a maniac. If you don't game I suggest you underclock: even more battery life with no speed loss!!

Battery Tweaks

I come from the Eris forums, where battery tweak threads were plentiful. Can anyone direct me to such a thread concerning (rooted) INC2s? I'm on CM7, and battery life is so-so on heavy usage. I like to think rooting brings opportunities for ridiculously good battery life, but not w/o some tweaking. Help?
For the most part a majority of devs include there own tweaks into their respected roms. Most will flash a custom kernel which allows overclocking and undervolting. Like I am running miui with areos kernel oc 1.2 and undervolted -50. It is now 9pm and I have been unplugged since 8 and still have 70% with medium heavy use.

I'd rather not pay $5 for something that is only simplifying what I can do myself for free, ya know? I know in the Eris forums they had recommended CPU settings that I could do myself in the CM settings; do we have stuff like that for the INC2?
i usually get at least a day in a half with heavy use. You just need to experiment with custom kernals and different voltages. Not really a simple answer, you need to do the research yourself.
How do I alter voltage? I don't remember that feature on the Eris...

On cm7 you'll need aerovans .8 kernel which you can get on rootzwiki. Then install incredicontrol from the market. I undervolted mine 75-100 on all and had no issues with excellent battery.

You should really advise someone that doesn't know to try both and see which one better suites the device in particular. All devices are not created equally and they all react differently to different kernels. While you may get better battery life with that kernel I do not. And so on and so on down the line.
Thanks guys. I have it flashed and I am giving it time to settle and see how it does...

[Q] Highest Stable Overclock? (On JB)

Hello, I'm dumping my most amazing phone ever (Dinc) that I've had since the day it came out because Verizon are greedy *******s, and I just ordered a Gnex GSM from the Google Play Store.
When it arrives, I was wondering what I can expect to achieve via an Overclock and have the system still perform rock solid.
Thanks!
subjective. different for everyone and depends on temp, usage, stability of app youre running etc etc. just bump 5% at a time until you crash then drop it down one notch
You also need to disable smart reflex to hit the higher clock speeds without random freezes or crashes. I am running the trinity kernel at 1520 MHz stable with mpu smart reflex disabled.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
i can't provide any input on overclocking because this phone performs so well without it that i haven't found a need to. plus, the battery life is bad enough.

really, its different for every phone. I run 1.804ghz(trinity) stable after a little voltage adjustment. and you would have to turn off smart reflex for that. you will have t read up about smart reflex.
As said above it varies. Fastest I ran that was stable (at least for me) was 1.9 GHz (Franco Kernel) but there wasn't much benefit. I'm currently on Trinity at 1.4 GHz. Trinity on 1.7 GHz crashes for me.

With Trinity kernel for JB, I'd guess that 1420MHz CPU / 384MHz GPU would be stable for most phones, and it gives you a good little boost in benchmarks, fwiw. That's about the highest you can run without having to remember to tweak other values. And you can knock it down to 1036 or 1190 MHz if you need to save battery. My phone tests ok with the 15xx/5xx MHz kernel, but there isn't much additional oomph in the benchmarks, so I just use the 1420. Also don't want to abuse my phone too much.

Congrats on dumping Verizon. They are the worst. I am happy to be rid of them. Trinity 1344 and Franco Milestone 5 have been the most stable for me. You have to see the battery issue as well, if not to its will end quickly! In my opinion, use it in Stock is enough. But sometimes I get to put on 1.4Ghz CPU, and I reduce the voltages using the app franco kernel.
I was running Franco milestone 5 at 1536 nice and stable. I think I'm going to drop it back to stock-ish speeds and undervolt it a bit to save battery.

Thanks for all the input everyone.
I guess my last question now would be, if I root and keep the Stock ROM, has anyone experimented overclocking the stock kernel?
And if I decided to install CWM, and keep the stock ROM, would Trinity or Franco work on that? Or would I have to install something like CM10 or AOKP to use those other Kernels.
I would rather just like to stay stock without CWM and overclock the stock kernel.

So far I think staying stock is just as good as running a developed kernel for this particular ROM imho, especially when you want to get the most battery. I use SetCPu and will run min 486 and Max 1350/1404. SmartassV2 and Zen or cfq governors. I don't play many games on my phone, I have tablets for that and they are tweaked as high as I can go and be stable. It's all about what you use your phone for, most times when I benchmark it seems the higher frequency I push my score actually will get worse, might be I'm need to up my voltage, but I don't mess with voltages much. I will follow the developers guidelines for undervolting if I'm trying to squeeze that extra life, but I don't worry about it that much. Best way for me to extend my battery life is start turning things off when they're not needed. All the things I try with my devices I have learned by reading on the XDA forums, and by far the developers for our GS3's are the best and I'm very thankful for all they give up to give us these awesome roms, kernels, and not forgetting about the theme developers to make or phones run fast, operate smoothly, and look great. Without them might as well buy a fruit product, just kidding I would get a flip phone before I would do that. .... a benchmark is basically a set of tests to see how fast your phone is running
here is the dictionary meaning...
bench·mark
/ˈbenCHˌmärk/
Noun
A standard or point of reference against which things may be compared or assessed.
Verb
Evaluate or check (something) by comparison with a standard: "we are benchmarking our performance against external criteria".
if you want to compare your device to others
go to playstore and download Antutu Benchmark and run it
I know my device would score low...I'm setup for stability and battery life.
Those with really high scores are tweaked for Max performance and probably carry an a/c charger in their pockets!
