Can't use s-pen side button with third-party software? LAME! - Galaxy Note 8.0 (Tablet) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooti

Papyrus has a cool feature where you can assign functionality to the side button, such as the eraser. But it won't work with the Note 8 because:
"Unfortunately, Samsung does not currently allow third party applications to access the S Pen side button. We really hope Samsung will change this in the future". http://papyrus.uservoice.com/knowledgebase/articles/118053-why-doesn-t-my-s-pen-side-button-work-
That's terrible! Is there a way around this by rooting and installing a tweaked ROM?
Thanks

Well, as far as I understand it, Samsung released an SDK called S Pen SDK already when the Note I was released. This SDK can be used by any third-party app.
The description of the SDK says:
What is the S Pen SDK ?
By using the S Pen SDK, you can easily add various S Pen features to your applications. It provides the necessary
functionality to take 100% advantage of the S Pen, including checking if the S Pen is activated, checking coordinates,
sensing pen pressure, detecting the on/off status of the side button on the pen, and handling hover events, which is supported on Android Ice Cream Sandwich or later.

And really, part of this SDK is a class called SPenTouchListener, which has methods for touches with pressed side button.
See this: http://img-developer.samsung.com/onlinedocs/spen_2_3/index.html
The onTouchButtonDown and onTouchButtonUp methods seem to be what the devs of your third-party app need.
It's definitely not true that third-party apps don't have access to the S Pen side button. Maybe if you point the devs of that app to this page, they will add it :fingers-crossed:
Checking out the app's description they already praise "Active pen" support, which seems to equal S Pen support on Note devices. Considering that, it's even more strange that the side button does not work.

i know in layerpaint on the gn10.1 you could use the side button and tap to switch from pen/brush to eraser and back. only bad part was that if you didn't time it right you'd end up taking a screenshot too. i haven't used it a all with the gn8 yet.

I use the side button as an eraser in Lecture Notes. I don't know why that can't be done in Papyrus, they are both third party apps.

Sketchbook Mobile is a nice one. Takes a little getting used to it though. I also like the Wacom Bamboo pad but for whatever reason it's now coming up as not compatible with the device.
more s-pen apps
Infinite Painter (S-note), Papyrus have proper S-pen support. Hope to see more good apps add support soon. I really like Papyrus, it is a very well designed notes app.
PhatPad and its companion WritePad are alternatives to Samsung keyboard and handwriting recognition, but far from great. The keyboard for Writepad is fuzzy, not up to par for the Note's hi-res screen. I used them on large phones & on tablets before I got the Note.
There are a few really good note apps, but so far they don't support the S-pen's pressure sensitivity, hoping they will soon: LectureNotes and Quill stand out in this category. For drawing & painting, also without pressure support try Sketchbook and Infinite Design.
@teandro: LectureNotes should actually support pressure sensitivity for all devices with S-pen running Android 4 or later, you can enabled it for all standard pencils in the app's input settings and individually for the custom pencils in the custom pencil settings.

[Q] Disable My Magazine Shortcut?

I rooted and was trying to remove apps I didn't want... On trying to use the My Magazine app, it had no options to disable the shortcut. I have since deleted Flipboard and My Magazine, but the swipe motion to bring up My Magazine instead brings up the Google Play store and the phone saying it can't find the app.
I was wondering if there's any way to disable the shortcut (swipe up from the home button) completely or if there's a way to remap it? I have tried looking in the options to no avail and it's a minor inconvenience I would ideally like to get rid of or (failing that) remap it to Google Now. Thanks in advance for any help anyone can provide.
I'm with you on this. I'd rather have Google Now as the swipe since there is no search button. I'm so used to it on the GSII. Hopefully it can be changed. I don't even use the Magazine app.
I must pull up that dumb magazines app a dozen times a day because I'm used to checking google now for sports scores
bobbyphoenix: I'm definitely with you on this... I'm not much of a Flipboard person anyhow and I would much rather have Google Now remapped to it if I can't get rid of the function. The upside is that I could get rid of the Google search box on the home screen if I had to remap the function.
I would love to no how to fix this to ...

I can't believe how annoying this is to get rid of. Why not have a setting to turn it off in the myriad of settings menus that is Touchwiz? This is driving me nuts! Pleaaase someone figure out how to get rid of this, preferably without root. I'd be eternally grateful
I figured it out! I started playing around with the app for a while, and I didn't realize everything it could do. I think I may keep it there now, but for those who don't want it, press the home key on the home screen to open My Magazines. Once it's open press the menu key. Go to settings. Then un-check "Open using the home key".
EDIT - Oh, and of course that is just to disable the home button from opening it. I haven't figured out how to disable the swipe up yet, but I'm looking for it.
Never seen the magazine app yet.. I'm using nova launcher I use the swipe up for my recent apps

Yes, only in touchwiz. Will figure out a way to replace this with Google now if possible, if someone else doesn't/hasn't

Oh you're great! thanks for the tips! finally i managed to get rid of the annoying My Magazines on the home key.:good:
So, is there something new about replacing swipe up with other app?
What's this menu key you speak of which lets me turn MyMagazine off? I don't need to agree to the terms and conditions and actually start using this odious app in order to turn that off, do I?

Yes you have to agree to the terms and usage to be able to get to the my magazine lobby then the settings menu. Just because you agree to the terms and usage doesn't mean you have to use it lol

It seems the binding to the up-swipe is controlled by touchwiz. I would suspect there is some registry setting or a config file in the system.
I rooted my Note 3 tester using (SM-N900W8) and froze the Flipboard app and the My Magazine app, which Samsung has decided to prevent users from disabling it (stupid move). I get errors and Touchwiz crashes. Both are re-enabled now, and I'll be looking to see how Touchwiz determines which app to run on the up-swipe and how to re-bind the home button.
A friend shared a clip from Family Guy with me today after hearing about this issue... Peter is giving some tech support to Quagmire, and an Agreement comes up on screen. Quagmire says 'let me read through this' and Peter says 'just click Agree' so he does. 3 seconds later some dude in a suit shows up and punches Quagmire in the head knocking him to the floor and smashing the laptop. Quagmire yells "ow, what the hell was that for?" and the suited fellow replies "well you agreed to the terms and conditions, didn't you?". That guy in the suit should be named Sam Sung.

The upswipe stuff is all in the TW launcher. You can go in and code it to do something different though - like open Google Now for example

Yeah I figured as much. We're not allowed to browse 'personal' websites from our corporate networks... we have had a lot of 'unauthorized use' triggers and notifications from various firewalls due to Note 3's being issued to users. So far, every single user with a Note 3 has complained about this.
Even more unfortunate is that I have had to take back the Note 3's and reassign them iPhones.

You let your wireless connections access to your inside corp network? Here, the only way to access corp would be via some sort of VPN connection.

Not quite (wish it was that easy).
Essentially, we have people that travel from site to site. Many sites do not have cellular connectivity in certain areas, however use of handheld devices on a secured segment of the network IS allowed. What is NOT allowed is attempts to access non-work related content, i.e. facebook, youtube, news/political web sites, and the like. They are all blocked, but what happens is each attempt to access an unauthorized site is logged and reported. The Note 3's trigger these alerts a LOT because when you run any of these apps (which on our current Galaxy S4's can be disabled easily WITHOUT rooting), they immediately reach out and start attempting to download content (even when started by accident). Wireless devices are permitted to access the Internet (work purposes only: voip, some web portals / web apps), and limited corporate resources (email, etc).
I have notified Samsung and they are looking into this (REF ID: 2122396737 for anyone at Samsung reading this thread).
I'm more than happy to root my own personal Note 3, but I can't do that legitimately with any corporate owned handsets.
I installed Nova Launcher (free). Seems to offer 99% of the Touchwiz features, plus a lot more. It is certainly faster as well. Got rid of the ridiculous my magazine activation (upswipe/home button).
You do not need root for it, and for the most part, it will look/feel the same.
Temporary work around for my personal Note 3. Still waiting for a response from Samsung support.

[Q] Writing on desktop

Howdy gurus,
Is there any apps out there that would allow me to write on the actual screen on the Note 8? I mean, can I use my S-Pen to highlight, take notes on the actual screen?

Hoping I understood your question correctly :
If by desktop you mean like windows or mac, then you could use a remote client like splashtop remote/vnc etc.
or there is another app called virtual tablet that makes your note a virtual tablet for your computer (though pressure sensitivity does not work, but other features can be used)
However if what you are asking is all to do on the note itself then there are a plenty of apps that let you do that and have pen support.
for example in pre installed s-note you can switch between writing pen/pencil/ highlighter / eraser.
I mostly prefer handwriting recognition in the samsung keyboard as with that I can do a lot more in most of office like apps.
Search for 'Snap Pad Free' on the play store. You can set the paper transparency to 100% if you wish so it looks like you are drawing directly on the desktop or within any app (it's always available)... then to save, simply make a screenshot. Done.
That's the closest app I know to what you're asking for.

Can we cut and paste like this?

I use Mantano reader for textbook reading and lecture notes for my note taking. I keep them both open in multi window and it works well for me. iPad just can't do this. The kid next to me uses some windows tablet with some DRM reader and one note.
I was watching him today during a lecture and he takes his stylus, selects a section from the ebook reader (e.g. a sample problem) and pastes it straight into one note. I really liked watching that and would find it useful.
Sadly I cannot figure out how to do this on the Note.

as far as i remember, you can do the same thing with GN10.1 but you need to press the spen button to select an area
Press and hold the spen button, then draw on the screen. You will see a selection line. It sometimes takes a while for the popup to pop up, but then you can share the selection with any app.
Yup! I was being a total idiot. I was holding the button too long and the spen application selector was popping up and I was trying to use scrapbook. A short press just before drawing on the screen worked great. Just had to figure out which option to pick in LectureNotes to paste and the answer was to paste from special clipboard (or special something or other). The selected text flows into Rakein and that was my whole problem. I was just expecting it to go to the clipboard like on a regular computer.

Yep. I use it all the time. Just highlight what you want to move from one window to another and then long press it with S Pen or your mouse and drag it to the other window. Both apps have to support drag-and-drop but not all do. Most of Samsung's apps and those they include (EG: Hancom) do.

Totally unrelated to my question, but since the update, I cannot believe how much smoother these two are when both are running in multiwindow. For my A&P II class I also have HShow 2014 open and the three of them all run silky smooth.
Edit: So sorry, forgot I posted this in the 2014 forum. Disregard the above as it is about the 12.2 update.

[App] sMouse : Use your Note 10 S Pen as an air mouse

Hi,
I'm happy to present what I think is the first Air Mouse app for the Note 10: sMouse.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=io.kinesthetic.smouse
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SZI6yBJ3u1c
sMouse is a virtual cursor for your Note 10 that you can control with the S Pen.
sMouse uses the Gyro embedded in the S Pen to detect movement and move the cursor.
To navigate: Hold down the button on the S Pen while keeping the mouse still. This engages 'Warp mode', where you can re-position the cursor, or go back or home.
To scroll: Hold down the button on the S Pen and quickly flick the S Pen up or down to start Scrolling.
Permissions:
The app needs two permissions to operate, these are:
* Overlay permission: This allows the app to draw a virtual cursor over your screen
* Accessibility Service permission: The app needs to be granted the Accessibility Service's 'Gesture' permission so that it can perform clicks, navigate Back and to Home on your device.
Current limitations:
* The S Pen Gyro only works well when the S Pen is held horizontally. If you point the S Pen down (vertically), the gyro can not detect movement, and your cursor won't move.
* The virtual cursor can not move/draw into the system bar at the top of the phone. This is an Android OS security thing where Android will not let apps draw in this space.
This app is just a bit of fun that I made after playing with the S Pen SDK to see what the S Pen could do, and to my pleasant surprise it has a functioning gyro sensor that is readable from the SDK. I've made a good attempt to make this as usable as possible, however it is limited by the hardware in the S Pen.
Thats it. The app is free, no paid versions or advertisements. If you like it please leave a nice review, and maybe checkout my stuff
Hope you enjoy!
Very useful app that you have created. It is very useful. Brilliant work.
ironic that i spoke to someone weeks ago about having an app made like this, wish i was quicker, well done looking forward to test it.
This is great. Seems to work well so far.
This would be a great addition to Dex Desktop while working on a TV. I haven't tested it yet but it seems like a fit made in heaven.
I will try! Great work! Thanks!
Great app and work. Anyone could post a new video showing all the functions?
It could be used like a regular mouse ... Pointing, moving, right and left click ... Except toolbar?

Looks interesting
thanks for your great work, can you please provide us a link for the apk file, for those of us who can't access the play store?
This app save me; I was looking for all kinds of alternatives to use the Gear VR on my note 10 as a cardboard viewer but couldn't remap neither the spen nor the controller to trigger a screen touch (click). With this app I can finally do it.
Only one request, would you send me an apk wich doesn't write the mouse on screen? I always end up putting the mouse on the right and setting the sensitivity to 0 in order to hide it, but when I restart the App it puts it on the center.
A suggestion, make something like this app with the settings I'm telling you and put it in the app store with something like "Spen VR clicker" or something, I know it would be really helpful and many users would download it.

I don't manage to get it working on my note 10+. It's running Android 10.
I think it has to do with the permissions or the s-pen. Can anyone tell me exactly how to set them correctly?
