[Q] What exactly is "pil-gss"? - Nexus 7 (2013) Q&A

I have a 2013 Nexus 7 and had no problems during the first week. One night i left it at 100% charge, and woke up to 70% i checked cpu spy and the device did not go into deep sleep. I literally tried EVERYTHING: factory reseted, rooted, installed custom roms and kernels and NOTHING fixed the deep sleep issue. Not even the JSS15Q update. I downloaded BetterBatteryStats and the process "pil-gss" and "powermanagementservice" are wakelocking the device. I did buy the nexus on Best Buy but i dont live on the us so its impossible for me to return it. I googled about "pil-gss" and didnt fint anything relevant. Please someone help me, the nexus is an amazing device but with the battery draining i think i will not be able to use it anymore :crying:

After a factory reset... Do you install apps or you have the issue without any app installed?

i even left the tablet on the welcome screen. Tried with no apps installed, even tried cyanogenmod with no gapps installed. Im frustrated at this point and i havent found any information about pil-gss

How are you charging it? There was a recent article on power management causing wakelocks with certain wireless chargers.

This seemed to start for me after the OTA updates were released, because my first week of owning it I had no problems. I even took it out of my new case with the magnetic lid just to be sure it wasn't caused by that to no avail.
Has anyone seen a way to remedy this? Obviously it's going to need a patch from Google, but is there a hack that might stop this?

PaulW from Google is apparently being made aware of the issues, I'm also having it, keep an eye on this thread:

Crashing issues possible cause

I just had another crash replying to a post here using tapatalk. The keyboard had small pink corruptions as if video memory had an issue.
I pulled the battery for about 10 seconds, tried to turn it back on. No dice. I tried again except pulled the sim as well, that worked.
Maybe some of us having crashes are sim related?

I've had to do a second battery pull today. Phone locks up then about 5 seconds later the display goes dark. Not fun.

I froze twice in the past three days. I was using hand cent and browsing. The battery had to be pulled in order for restart.

Yesterday I noticed GetJar was keeping the device awake (in battery stats), but otherwise it was responsive and all good. I uninstalled GetJar and rebooted for good measure. It powered down fine, but wouldn't power back up. I had to pull the battery.
My first 'battery pull' so far!
I had my first crash today while I was replying to an SMS message. The screen produced these broken specs of green.
I couldn't exit from the SMS, eventually the screen turned itself off and then nothing.
I had to perform a battery pull to fix.
When the phone booted back up ICS complained that the launcher had crashed.
Instead of clicking 'stop' I clicked 'wait'.
Phone returned to normal after that.

Did you guys restore old apps/app data from your previous Android device? If so, factory reset and START FRESH.
I can't count the people I know that had issues all stubbornly because they refused to start fresh from a new device.

I didn't use a restore. I just added my Google account and let the phone download my apps that I more or less had from my Nexus One.
Is that OK to do?
Or should I have done something else??
Let me know, Thanks.

This is how it works. When you login all the apps install automatically.
I just noticed this morning that a bunch of apps I had uninstalled already on my GN automatically reinstalled. Odd right?

If you have "force 2d rendering" checked in the developer settings, that will cause many issues.

I don't have any dev options on. I'm basically seeing what others are. Lockup, sometimes with screen corruption, then the display eventually goes black some short amount of time afterward. Battery pull required. I thought it may be heat related at one time but it has happened when the device was relatively cool. Seems like a software driver issue that can hopefully be addressed.

[Q] My Galaxy Nexus keeps re-booting

I was running Paul's custom ROM for the past week or so. I plugged my phone in to a portable charger because the battery was low. This is not the first time I have used this charger on this phone. After a few minutes the phone rebooted. I found this odd so I tried to figure out what was going on. I unlocked the device and went into settings....phone rebooted again. I tried reflashing the MoDaCo ROM, reflashing the original ROM and resetting the device. It still does it. Im still new to Android platform (moving away from a shameful iPhone) so Im lost on what the problem could be. Any ideas?
did you undervolt and tick set on boot without testing voltages?

No. I didn't change any of that. My phone is unusable
I think one of my apps is causing it. Is that possible even though I'm not running the app?
I have no idea. I think youre leaving out something.

After i restore to factory everything works fine. It starts again (doesn't matter which ROM I'm using) when Google syncs the apps I've downloaded to the phone. It's stable right now until I figure out what the hell is going on.
I would say app but you said you wiped everything..

Right. It works fine until Google starts to sync my data from my account. Is there a way to pinpoint which app is causing the damage?
Nevermind. It does it anyway. Hardware issue? Overheating issue?

[Q] Screen Suddenly Turn on (GNEX)

Hello,
I have an issue with my Galaxy Nexus, After i upgraded to 4.0.4 it happens that when in standby mode, the screen turn on for 3 seconds and then turn off by itself many times.
The phone is rooted, and not few applications on it, same when i had 4.0.2
Does anyone know what is causing this?
Thank you,
Is it saying its charging when it does it?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
Nope it doesn't say charging.
Hmm. Wondered if it was the charging port problem... I had it n done some Googling to find its quite common, fixed it myself. I'd check what's causing wake locks.... alternatively a factory reset should help..

Had this issue on my xoom and nexus. Uninstalled a few apps I had on both to try and narrow it down and haven't had the issue sense. My rouge app was a tablet wallpaper app.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus
Some apps use the FULL_WAKELOCK to do certain tasks, and that turns the screen on. Check some apps that might do that, the permission for that is "Prevent device from sleeping"
Thanks guys

Screen automatically turns on!!

Hi!..I have an issue with the screen. Sometimes when I keep my phone aside my phone screen suddenly lightens up shows the pattern unlock page and automatically turns off. This happens 4-5 times in succession. First I thought its because of the antivirus app so I uninstalled it but still the problem persists. Does anyone know why this is happening? Any suggestion will be helpful.

I think we'll probably need a lot more information than that...
It could be anything. When I have mine plugged into my computer and the screensaver kicks on or when the laptop falls asleep, it does the same thing to mine because the USB power is cycling but it could be anything. Are you rooted? What ROM? What kernel? What is the battery state? Go into settings > apps and see what's running, start testing those out.
If your rooted, the problem with the screen waking is possibly superSU granting an app root access. Its usually a toast pop up saying that an interactive shell has been granted. At least it has been for me in the past. You can turn the notification off in the superSU settings.

my gf's HD2 used to do the same thing after she dropped it on its bottom right corner.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
My Nexus does that from time to time. Running AOKP JB preview builds. Latest franco kernel. Screen just turns on. No popups, no notification, just shows the lock screen until it times out again. Doesn't do it enough to worry me but it is a little odd.
No I have not rooted my nexus, using ICS 4.0.4. My phone is yakjuxw so haven't got the JB update yet..I have general apps like Facebook, whatsapp, power toggle, etc to name few.

Next time it does it see if your phone says charging even though not plugged in. Could be a bad charge port on your phone.
Had the same thing. The culprit turned out to be folder sync.

Battery drain on idle

Hi, I just got a nexus 7 (its been a month now) when the device is on standby it drains all the battery, in fact it only lasts 6h. In the battery usage, all there is is 'tablet idle' and 'WiFi'.
Till now I have tried clearing the cache partition, restoring factory defaults (more than once) and even signing in with a different user after factory defaults, nothing helps!
I managed to get proper battery usage maybe once or twice.
When this happens the top right part of the tablet gets really hot!
Any clues? Should I return it back to the US?

man it could be anything....more than likely though you have a rogue app that likes to kill your battery. The best thing to do is go through your apps, and delete them one by one to see if you can pinpoint the app that is hogging the battery.
Just an update on this. I found out which app was draining my tab, believe it or not, it was the official google now launcher!

After some 2 months the issue is back!! I installed no new apps since the time I said it was sorted. I have also tried to boot in safe mode but even in safe mode the battery drains in a matter of hours
