The only way i know of to brick a phone is to flash a GSM Radio and there should be none on this forums
hey whats up. i live in tampa. theres really nothing to the root though, if you can follow the simple steps you should be fine.
I upgraded my evo to .6 update and then ran the unrevoked app and am sticking to that root as of right now for homebrew and wifi tether. There's not much incentive to flash a rom since not much is out there yet. Give it a little time but for now the unrevoked is as simple as can get. Install the app, run the program and it will "root" your phone every time you boot up as long as the app is installed. Uninstall the app, reboot and your phone should go back to stock (i think)
Keep in mind that the nand is still locked so you wont be able to flash custom roms with the unrevoked method but its fine for wifi tether and the sort...lemme know if you got any more questions

PLZ enter for all G2 users or profs

how can i unlock G2 ?? if it free how ? ad if not , what is the cheapest and TRUSTED way by the web ? thnks all
using stock kernal, and use gfree
man what is gfree and how 2 use it ?
look in dev section, there is guides on how to use gfree and root, best is to look at xda vision wiki
No one here is going to hold your hand through it. You have to search and learn a little. Then you will notice a lot more help
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA Premium App
The term "unlocked" is confusing. Do you mean rooted or SIM unlocked?
Either way, it can be done for free. Link has instructions for rooting. If you want SIM unlocked, you need to root AND be Subsidy Unlocked. This method is considered the safest.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=HTC_Vision#Rooting_the_Vision_.28G2.2FDZ.29_and_DHD
Look up rooting g2 no abd required. If you have a new one. You will have to downgrade after u get s-off but no root and then do the same process again. Holding hands is good.

You're going to need to type more than a couple words if you want real help. Did you try any root methods? If so, which one, and where are you stuck. You haven't told us enough to allow us to help you at all.
I've posted the instructions for rooting and getting subsidy unlock in my previous response.

if you dont try, then you wont learn. Read the link and if you have any specific questions then ask.
the wiki is as "rooting for idiots" as it gets. if you can't follow the steps one by one, then pay someone to root it for you.
This is a sticky from here. Follow the directions to the letter. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=928160 It's not that hard. Just follow the DIRECTIONS. Failure to follow the directions will result in a high dollar paper weight. If you brick your phone it was by your own doing. Just know the outcome if you mess up.
Don't pay attention to all these people telling you that you'll "learn" if you really want it done. We were all new at some point, and I never have seen the usefulness in comments like that. Anyway, there are lots of us out there willing to help, post up exactly what you don't understand and I'll do my best to help you out. However, whatever you do DO NOT attempt perm rooting with visionary, your phone would most likely turn into a really pretty paperweight

i disagree with you. I have been here at xda for a long time and I relied first on reading instructions that have been posted a long time ago and when I had questions I specifically ask about the part I didn't understand not shoot first and ask later.
Here on xda since 2008. If he honestly wants real help then he has to make an effort to learn not just look at the wiki and just throw a general help cry. The wiki has the instructions step by step. If you have specific questions about a step or two, then ask that, not "I'M NOT A PRO, HELP PLS"
Speaking of root I can't have a pc so I can't downgrade to stock ota don't really want to either. I'm guessing only way to root is still going to need me to downgrade.

well, based on my understanding (I might be wrong) but I believe it is possible to downgrade from your phone via sd. Again, I might be wrong, but if that is possible then you might be able to achieve root once you do the downgrade. Otherwise, maybe you can borrow a friend's PC to do the downgrade.
Good luck
This should explain how to root.

[Q] Help With Virgin Mobile USA WFS

I just have bought the WFS on Virgin USA and I have some questions.
1.) I wanted to know if the LED Notification light can be changed to a different color.
2.) What is the difference between S-ON and S-OFF?
3.) I don't have like any internal memory on my phone, is there a way to get more? I know I could root and rom it but I have questions about that also.
3a.) How do I root the device. (I know that I can make it S-OFF by doing this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1351409 )
3b.) If I decide to Root and Rom the device, can I make a backup of what it looks like now so if I decided to go back, there wouldn't be any issues?
3c.) Which ROM's are compatable with VM's version (I really would like one that is senseless and has as much internal memory as possible, because right now I can't put anything on it that I would like to.)
3d.) Would I be able to un-root and turn S-ON if needed to?
3e.) If I were to do this, would someone be willing to help me step-by-step with it?
Sorry that I have a lot of questions, but im a n00b. xD
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
*I have attached some screenshots of an error and how much space is left on the phone*
As far as I know about the only thing which can give you a decent amount of additional app storage would be link2AD which requires root. You can get a bit using the built in app2SD off the Android OS so that doesn't need root. You can find info about both here on XDA.

It's a security feature in the radio that prevents writing of unsigned images to the NAND flash.

You mean internal (flash) storage? Memory would be considered RAM, unless that's what you mean, because you have a lot of services and apps running. Either way, you need a ROM with apps2sd/data2sd/link2sd/etc., or you can download it separately, but you still need to be s-off'd and rooted first. (unless you find an official RUU with that already in it.)

Rooting and s-off are two totally different things.. but rooting is the same procedure for almost every phone.

Yes, you must first s-off your phone though, then flash clockwork mod custom recovery to backup everything on your phone, without any issues.

You can do both, but the second requires a serial-to-usb cable (max232 or dku5, etc.) so you can talk to the radio in AT interpreter mode.

Ok, I'll answer as much as I can.
1) don't think so, just orange and green.
2)s-off just means htcs extra security is off, without it, no root or recovery.
3) until we get either cm7 or vm stock with a2sd support, we're screwed. You can root and pull some bloat. But sense is the real problem.
3a) in the development index (I'm lazy) there's a tut on rooting and installing Su after s-off.
3b&c) there's NO ROMs for the cdma version. But yes you can nand backup.
3d)I honestly don't know. I haven't heard of doing it .
3e) if you REALLY need help with s-off, pm me. But the threads short and the instructions are well written so you should get it.
Edit: I type sllloooowwwwww.

You can flash ROMs, but only 4.4.2 based ones as you have old firmware. It will break your wifi if you try to flash 4.4.3/4.4.4 Roms.
First use this guide to get ADB working on windows 8.1
Then get Sunshine S-Off. You'll need it to update your firmware to run newer 4.4.4 ROMs, and can only do that with an OTA or S-Off. You can find it with Google. It cost $25, but is totally worth it. And if it doesn't work, you don't pay.
After that, update your firmware. If you need help with that, quote me here with a reply, and I'll help to guide you along.

Maybe the developers felt the same way. What's the point of spending countless hours and many bricked devices(thousands of dollars) to give S-OFF to people that probably don't even know what to do with it, for free ?

You have two choices that I know of. Pay $25, or remain S-On. The choice is yours.
HTC patched the Firewater exploit, so it won't work. Sunshine is made by the same team, and with all the time and effort they put into it, $25 isn't too much to ask for.
But there is a way to get it for free, you are correct.
Find the exploits on your own and develop your own S-Off method.

Are you kidding? You don't NEED s-off, so don't get it. Stick with the 4.4.2 ROMs. Or, pony up the money, stop being so cheap, and run the newest ROMs. It's really that simple.
If you expect people to work for you for free, then come over to my place. I have some leaves that need raking, and I expect to pay you nothing to do it..
Anyways, I'm glad you got ADB working. :good:

I copied and pasted this from Sunshine's website. Maybe it will help you understand why it isn't free:
"Simply put, it isn't free. SunShine is the cumulation of years of research, hundreds of hours of development, the sacrifice of many devices (R.I.P. bricked test phones), and the blood, sweat and tears of multiple developers. Just like how a mechanic charges money for his time souping up your car, the only feasible way to devote the time and energy to this is to charge for it. The income from SunShine allows us to recoup the time lost from other projects, to invest more time into research and development of new solutions, purchase new test hardware, and to allow us to enjoy a few bottles of wine at the end of a hard week.
Well crud, how much are you asking for?
The initial price of SunShine is set at $25.00usd per device, payable via paypal or credit-card from within the application itself. Our hopes are that SunShine is successful enough to allow us to find or purchase vulnerabilities, and to develop future solutions at lower prices. If you want to see additional payment options become available, let us know in support!
Are you crazy $25?!?
You may be right. We may be crazy. Considering our costs to develop SunShine, we feel we are justified. Most of our customers purchased heavily subsidized devices, instead of opting for a more developer friendly product. SunShine solves that situation, at a much lower cost than purchasing a developer device."

Thanks for the offer, but I don't think any of us will need anything. Fortunately HTC makes it really easy for us to return to bone-stock with RUU (minus re-locking the bootloader etc). Enjoy your 10!
