Should I buy the One or no? - Verizon HTC One (M7)

Hey guys,
I have an S4 and am about to sell it for the One. I heard they already patched the unlock work around... is this true? Can anyone link me to a thread with details?
Thanks in advance

I have the s4 right now too and I'm still getting the one regardless of the unlock hack. Feel like this phone is gonna break in my hand. I'll be getting the one on Thursday so hopefully by then someone will have figures it out

The One is by far the best phone I've ever owned. Period. That's all I've got to say.
Sent from my HTC One.

The bootloader is locked. HTC Dev Unlock was shut down by VZW. The only hope now is a hack.
Here's the link to the thread...

I have both at the moment, but need to ditch one of them. Problem is there are great things about both, and they're very different experiences. My main thing is the camera. The S4 can take some incredible pictures... the One is solid and fast, but a lot more inconsistent than the S4. The S4 also allows me to say "cheese", "capture", "shoot", to get it to auto-focus and snap a shot - which comes in handier a lot more often than I thought. The One also doesn't quite match up with battery life, but that makes sense given the smaller battery.
First world problems...

LOL! Right! I have been reading and debating for weeks and I feel no closer...The Camera is the most important feature for me as I am a crazy shutterbug, but that build quality on the One is so nice...I want the One to have the better camera and an SD card slot damn it! Stupid people at HTC!

also have s3/s4 +htc one.
hard to say which i like better.
but if htc one get s-off, ill ditch the s4 as I don't think it'll ever be unlocked..

Are you stuck on ME7? The S4 I bought a week ago had a bad button - it came out of the box with ME7. However, in store yesterday they just grabbed one out of another box brand new to swap out, and it's on MDK. Since the One is locked up for now, and the S4 I have now can theoretically stay that way as long as someone (like yourself ) continues providing stock/rooted ROMs, correct? Making the decision even tougher... that, and as much as I like the speed and quality of the One's camera, the S4 can simply take some amazing shots... S4 also seems to get better battery life, but the One's UI is smoother/snappier.
Blah...

I'm wavering back and forth myself between getting the One and selling my S3. Aside from build, I personally feel the quality of Sense all the way through is far superior to TouchWiz. I think with the camera is 50/50 because I've had some great shots on my S3 but I've also had some horrible shots; interestingly enough, now that I think about it my first S3 had a horrible camera but the CLN I got takes much better photos.
Anyway, for me even if the battery life is so-so on the One I think fit-and-finish will still win out on me if I go through with it.

The S4 may seem to take better shots because of its over processing. I would personally just find as many camera comparisons as you can and even check out Flickr's camera finder to see.

I got mine from a user mikekid7 for a very great price (basically contract price) that already came with MDK when I bought it.

Sense is definitely cleaner and simpler than Touchwiz, and snappier. But TW on the S4 has a few features that become relatively addicting once you're used to them (this isn't my first S4 )... Air Preview is one - it seems gimmicky, but once you're used to using it, it's pretty handy. Using your voice to take a picture is another I use ALL the time - keeps the hands steady and helps with the self-shots with the kiddos.

This isn't my first S4 or my first One - it is on Verizon, though. I've tested them both extensively, and honestly they both do a lot of processing. The One's camera is really fast, especially if you're using touch-to-capture, and has some cool features like "events" videos. The One has a tendency to wash out in lighter scenarios because it lets so much light in. The S4 keeps lighting more balanced, but if there's a shadow in the foreground (like on someone's face), doesn't bring it out as much because of that "balance". Honestly, the S4 takes better low-light shots than the One does when it's in Night Mode - which it can recognize automatically, but doesn't always do it. But it's also a slower shot than the One's low-light shots. Flash-based shots are hands down to the S4. The One's are good, don't get me wrong, but the S4's shots are bright and balanced with little to no washout, and very crisp and clear. You can really take advantage of those 13mp with the flash. Outdoor shots, especially in good sunlight, also go to the S4 most of the time. If all else is equal, and you're snapping a photo of your kid going down a water slide 30 feet away, they'll both do great - but the S4's will actually be croppable, while the One's will get noisy really quick at that distance.
So in general I like the quality of the S4's shots better, I like the feel and speed of the One's camera better (less the lack of voice control), and I like the feel and speed of the One in general, but also miss some of the voice controls that the S4 has. I also don't hate the S4's feel - it's very thin and tight... just not the nice brushed aluminum feel of the One. I also like that I can root/rom the S4 if I want - I don't do it much any more but would like the option. I can hope the One will be able to soon, but who knows... If I ditch the One today, it'll probably get s-off tomorrow. If I don't, it'll probably be 3 months...
edit: and I also tried out a Droid Maxx for a few days and besides battery life and an incredibly smooth, stock-like UI, found it lacking in almost every other area compared to the One and S4
Holy essay... goodness, sorry - went off there for a bit.

Ha no worries! I never use the voice features or any of the Samsung TW features on my S3, so that's a non-issue. As long as I can control aspects of the camera like metering, exposure value, iso, etc I can work with the camera.
My brain is going so fast trying to think this one through.

I absolutely agree with that sentiment! Months of reading and my conclusion is that I want a mash up of the 2 phones. The One with the S4 Camera & an SD card slot! In the long run, I am an amateur photographer and the S4 will probably win...

I've been wondering this same thing but for me the tricky thing is the lack of the software buttons I'm so used to on my Galaxy Nexus.
Though between the s4 and the one there isn't much a difference although the one's offset home button is kinda odd to me.
Hoping one day I'll be able to flash a rom that ignores the hardware buttons in exchange for software buttons, but that might not be as nice either. So still a tough decision.

I had the s4 and went with the one. The camera is barely better on the s4. No cellphone camera is going to take good shots in low light conditions and I think the one does a bit better than the s4. In normal to great light conditions the cameras are pretty darn close to me. I like the Zoe feature of the one.
Battery life seems to be pretty much the same as well. I'm getting just about the same amount t of screen on time.
I think the one ui is much more fluid. And the big winner for me is the screen. Wow does the one look way better!!
The build quality is amazing on the one as well. I love how it feels like its a solidly built phone he plasticy. I out a case on mine so it kinda doesn't matter but you can still feel that the phone is solid.
Of course that's just my opinion.

The One's camera is also wicked fast, especially if you enable touch-to-capture under shutter options - tap where you want it to focus, it adjusts lighting and focuses and snaps very quickly. And I love being able to make a short video montage with preset audio and effects and share that easily... pretty cool feature with the kiddos.
I think the main areas the S4's camera will win out are large scenic shots that you want to crop or zoom at all, for obvious reasons. And also shots where there's a lot of contrast, it tends to balance things out better, while the One seems to wash out the light areas when focused on the dark areas, and vice versa.

Of course, I have Dslr, but I don't always have it with me, and I have found that 50% of the time, the Phone can equal it...The other 50% it doesn't come close!
BTW, I took the S4 back and got the One! Was not happy with the Camera and that was the only reason I bought it...

That's what happened when you have high expectations of anything... you get disappointed. Personally, I think they could have done a better job. Yea they have some cool new features, but there should have been more. And that siri like voice thing is a fail.. they should have copied that.

Had no expectations and I'm still disappointed.
I don't need a phone to tell me which of the captured photos is the "best"
one.
I felt certain things can be better but that eye recognition & pop out player was amazing to me (if you can do it with all videos like YouTube, etc.) I'll sell my other SII today...
But I might hold off til they get a 1080p display because I'm not jumping ship for a 720p display
I'm debating whether i should wait for the GS3 to be released and export it, or to buy the galaxy nexus now. It's kinda disappointing that its almost the same screen as the nexus, and the back of it looks like SHI*.

On a 4.8in screen, I don't think the eye can determine the difference between 1080p and 720p. The difference is literally microscopic. On a 60inch TV you can for sure tell the difference though.
I was impressed with the eye sleep option, liked the continuous flash that determines the best photo. Like that you can pick up the phone while texting and it automatically calls someone. Also like the quad core processor. It apparently has gotten impressive benchmark scores. The ICS with touchwiz looked pretty good to me, along with the additional toggles as well. All in all I was happy with what they released.
Honestly, it would be my absolute dream phone if only it had two things: a NOTIFICATION LIGHT/LED, and of course AOSP. Fortunately, one of those can be fixed with ongoing development, but BLN just doesn't quite fill the void for me. I miss that notification light. :/ otherwise, I like the curvy simplicity of it, and the dark blue finish rather than flat black is a nice choice!

Even on a 60 inch screen it is nearly impossible to tell. Its just all part of marketing and wanting to have the "best"
As far as the phone, I am honestly not that impressed, I think the GN is still the better choice, sure it may have nice specs and all, but when it cokes down to it. We need a phone that will have the latest software and this will he no different than the pickle we're in right now. We'll be behind again in about 3 months with next OS. Nexus all the way for me from now on.

Of course, samsung did a great job; however, i think ill just be sticking with my gs2 for now. In the US, it'll most probably get a Qualcomm dual core processor so besides a few improvements from the gs2, its nothing major. but definitely a nice phone!
Reply
I dont feel theres nearly enough improvements to justify upgrading sure would be fun to have something new tho haha
im torn, I like alot of the new feature the phone offers, but the phone looks like a nexus/gs2, nothing drastic like we all hoped for. Kind of like a iphone 4s imo. What do you guys think about the upcoming nexus phone? that might be the game changer, since rumors has it that it will be a upgraded version of the s3.
when does google usually unveil the nexus phones? at their google io thing in june?
just my 2 cents
Disappointed
Overall - disappointing.
Great performance and features - absolutely!. 2100mA battery should = longer usage times (even with 4 faster cores). HD res is great. Improved UI. Some very nifty accessories. 8mp camera is fine as improved software & performance makes the picture - though Carl Zeiss optics would have been great.
4.8 screen getting too big for a phone. Was hoping for an ultra thin bezel hence reducing size.
But pentile matrix? Heavier? Thicker? No quality materials? Old Mali GPU? No LTE? 1Gb RAM? And featureless design? Very, very poor for a flagship phone that's meant to be setting the standard...
Heavier I understand (bigger battery weighs more). But there's HD Super Amoled plus on tab7.7 - why pentile here? Competition has phones 6.9mm thick. HTC, Sony, even Motorla & Huawei have better designs (not to mention Apple) and materials. So it's not as if any of this wasn't achievable.
I have a SGS 1 & 2. The S2 was well ahead of the competition, bar materials and uninspiring design. Was looking forward to a groundbreaking S3 on all fronts. It's very good, but good isn't good enough these days.
Samsung needed to tick more boxes to place this phone undisputably out in front leaving others to catch up & not easily surpass.
In no rush to get one now, and possibly might not. Will wait to see the competition - eg: Sony Ion, HTC, even (lord help me) Apple; or maybe wait for SGS4.

Today is the Day!

I get my shiny new 6502 today and I am sooo excited I am coming from a Note II.
Reasons I switched:
Love the fact that it is a 5" screen but compact, tired of lugging around such a huge phone but love a bigger screen.
Love the clean UI, almost Nexus 4'ish.
Love that it's not all glass like the Z because I use my phones naked so less chance of damage there.
Love the fact that I bought a factory unlocked phone and that I am actually going to finally give T Mobile a try (coming from AT&T), will save $70 a month.
Love the fact that my phone will be different than the other 90% of the population because its not an iPhone or Samsung.
Love the fact that paired up with my shiny new black Pebble watch, this will be a sick combo!
Love 13MP camera so i can zoom into everything. (use phone a lot for engineering work and take pictures of things for notes)
Also love the fact that I bought an HTC One (still waiting for it) and will probably use both as my daily driver (I get bored really quick haha)
Concerns:
I hope that the camera is good and if not that we can either tweak the software for the original camera app, or get a custom camera app that will work better.
I hope the display doesn't wash out as bad as everyone says (or that I don't actually use the screen from a different angle, because I have never thought of it)
Hope the external speaker is at least decent enough that if I watch youtube videos I can hear them ok.
Hope I can tweak the heck out of the phone.
Hope I can get the camera app to launch faster. (might just have to keep it loaded in memory before I know I am going to use it, but what happens when you need it quickly...)
Just some of my thoughts for now as I day dream of my new phone today.
Come on mail lady, please be swift today!
If you have any thoughts on any of these things, or your own reasons you switched or concerns, I would love to hear them.
I will post back on here as soon as I get the phone in my hands (my precious will be with me soon) haha
Guess what I just got in my hands! My little precious!!!
Congratulations! I find that my zl battery got so much better after about 5 days, also I find it gets less warm these days. I have action launcher, lmt launcher and the phone is great. I find the camera launches pretty fast using the shutter key.
Absolutely love the screen and the feel of this device! Cannot believe how small this is with a 5" screen, amazing. Excellent build quality, screams elegant.
10x faster than my Note 2.
Will continue to download all my apps and get it fully customized and write more later on it.

After using this phone for a full day I am so in love with it. I really was unsure and thought it would just get me by until the HTC showed up.
This might actually become my new daily driver.
Been messing with camera app all day. It is hit or miss.
Everything about the phone is great. I can also go a whole day with moderate use.
only downfall of this phone is the camera software. Pictures are hit or miss.
I have to say i'm very disappointed.

This phone is a flag ship. Sony may be behind on processor and screen but the difference against the competition in real world use is not visible. If you read all the blogs and believe everything you read you may believe this phone is inferior. Actually the ZL holds its own. Just sold my htc one for it. Horses for courses.

Great phone!
I'm also waiting for my HTC One in the mail. My carrier was offering a ridiculous deal for the ZL so I went for it, and will make my decision when it comes. The ZL is awesome for many unique reasons and could very well become my DD
Elegant design - great feel in the hand!
Can use one handed because of compact design and small bezel
Display is gorgeous. Yeah we know about the poor viewing angles...but we mainly look at our phones straight on...right?
Sexy and visible LED notification light (HTC take note)
Power button has perfect placement. It's just accessible no matter how you pick up the phone (again take note HTC)
Expandable storage
Dedicated camera button
Clean and unbloated Android experience. Super fast ui response!
IR blaster works great with other devices
Great sound with headphones
No point in outlining negatives here. Either way you slice it this is a fantastic phone....enjoy it!
got it....love my 6502
It came today, haven't had time to play too much with it so still setting it up.
So far I am loving it.
Don't have to enable data to receive pictures in my texts (that always annoyed me on the Nexus 4). Also I am torn between all the updates vs giving even more info to Google. I picked the Sony route for a bit.
Love the 5 inch size, with the screen taking most of the front it is just right it seems
Went with the unlocked 6502, won't pay $200 extra for LTE (I'm on WIFI all the time anyways)

Exchanged HTC one for s4 OMG AMAZING

Ok so I have had the s3 and the note 2 prior to switching to t-mobile, when I switched I figured id get the HTC one since I didnt or wouldnt have had that option with verizon, I must say I hated the phone. The hardware is nice dont get me wrong but the software SUCKS. The camera SUCKS. even the camera software is no were near as nice and useful as it is on the S4. I am so friggin happy with the s4 I dont know why I thought I would like the One. It may be the best device in the world for some but Id have to say to go from a samsung to an HTC Is like going backwards, and I even thought the gestures and smart scroll and all that would be to gimmicky and never get used but honestly, I love it!
Anyway, I just had to vent this. There were so many things wrong with sense in my opinion and if I can make anyones choice easier and allow them to be satisfied then hope I helped.

A friend of mine at work just got the HTC One and I must say, yes hardware wise it's a nice looking phone and the speaker quality is the best around no question. Other than that, the software was Meh, no 4.2.2. Thank God I went with the GS4, made the right decision.
A lot of people probably hate TouchWiz too until they got used to it. Count me as one of them (well actually, I didn't hate it). For me, I'm a Samsung guy and have had in succession the Note 2, S3, and now S4. A family member of mine has the Nexus 4 and while the phone was so debloated, so stock, I felt it was missing so many features. Yes, some people will love it that way, no bloat and pure Android. I'm so used to TW and all its (fancy) features, I feel any other phone is not as powerful if they don't have the same features.
Obviously, Sense is a different launcher/style than a lot of us are used too (by us, I mean the Samsung folks). That doesn't mean it's horrible. I for one would love to try out the Sense theme, if I can get my hands on an HTC One. I'm all in for new/different features - like Windows 8. A lot of people hated it from the start because it was so different, so not intuitive they say. In response, I have to say, get used to it before making the judgment. It's taken me a couple months just to get used to Windows 8. Certainly, the Metro I don't care with, and would prefer Win7. Until I can do the same thing with Sense, I can't say whether the difference with TW makes it better, worse, or it's just different than TW.
I feel you made the wrong choice. Those additional features will only be used for showing off and you only have about 8 GB of storage compared to about 28 on the one. Speakers are the best and I'm sure HTC will do a good job pushing out updates. Lastly, the one's screen is better and not as big so it is easier to use. I was going to get the s4 at first but then I asked myself what I really wanted. That's why I routed for the one

Good for you, I'm happy I had an sd slot so i can switch from my 64gb to my 32gb where I store my movies to my 16gb where I have my tv shows. Am also glad I am able to have an extra battery in case I will be able from my charger for an extended period of time. But if you dont like having those options then good for you!

Dont turn this into a One vs S4 thread, both phones are amazing. I'm a Samsung guy and i fell in love with the One, as long as you're happy with your phone then its all gravy. This thread is kinda pointless too btw.
To each their own.
Me personally, neither phone could sway me away from the N2.

Neither phone impressed me. Samsung pulled an apple trick it's the same freaking phone! HTC did the same thing, no removable battery and no expandable memory! I'm waiting for the S5 or the next Gnex. Just my 2cents. Meanwhile I'm wearing out my S2.

Honestly, if the htc had expandable memory and removable battery I might, MIGHT, have gone with the one. It really is a beautiful phone and I would love to have those front facing speakers. But for me no exp memory and nonremovable batt = fail

Why all the hate?? We're all here for the same reasons, regardless of what phones we choose to buy. Different things are better for different people.

It's interesting, I recently purchased a TMO Galaxy S4 coming from a 2.5 year old HTC Sensation and I have *almost the exact opposite experience. The hardware (screen, form factor - obviously - it's just plain insane) and the camera software/interface is top notch! But the remainder of the experience felt like I was put back onto some odd looking, super sized font version of froyo - and not just by looks, I immediately noticed a drop in usability in some key aspects of the OS (e.g. email, sms, dialer, launcher) vs what I had gotten used to with HTC Sense.
Either way, not trying to be a troll. It's funny what we get used to and come to expect based on past experiences. The S4 will have to go back (thanks TMO return policy!) and it's gonna be me and the "old" HTC Sensation for a while longer. (I'd get the HTC One, but have to agree - no SD cards slot? wtf lol)

I've had a similar and also slightly different experience. I also came from an HTC Sensation which I've had for about 2 years, previously owned the og Galaxy S (Vibrant), and instead of the S4 I chose the HTC one, and got the GS4 for my wife instead.
Here are my observations since I actually have both phones and can compare them with NO bias...
-A lot of the online mainstream reviews you'll read between the two hit the nail on the head. The One imo is a better "phone". It does indeed have less features then the S4 (although many of them are gimmicks like the eye scrolling/tracking, airview, and a few others) but the speakers are far superior, which obviously aids for anyone who ever uses speakerphone or plays music and videos, the call quality is also a little better, the phone is more fluid and faster than the GS4 with basic functions like scrolling screens etc, and the phone of course has a MUCH more "premium" feel. Sense 5 is MUUUUUCH better than past versions of Sense and like a lot of review say, it *DOES* improve over stock android in actual useful features. The look is subjective of course but it's flat, useful and fast, and to me that's all that matters. The camera is better than any past smartphone I've ever used (Tmobile Dash>G1>Vibrant>Sensation>One) so I like it personally, but compared to its rivals like the GS4 I guess it's not the best, but does everything I've ever asked of it VERY well so no complaints from me.
The GS4 on the other hand has a superior camera. The camera on the One isn't bad at all, and kills the Gs4 in low light conditions and the aspect ratio and wide lense captures waaay more in each frame, but the GS4 has more camera features, packs a crapload more detail in each shot, has some pretty useful camera modes the One doesn't have, and is just generally better. The Galaxy might not be made of aluminum like the one, but it's lighter and imo actually feels better in my hand (without a case). Once you add a case in the mix, hand feel is null and void obviously but if you like to go commando the Gs4 feels better and will probably hold up to abuse better than the One due to the polycarbonate body and gorilla glass 3. The screen on the Galaxy is bigger than the One while the actual phone altogether is lighter and smaller so that's pretty nice, but it's not really THAT noticeable to be honest. One huge, huge advantage the Galaxy has over the One is removable storage and battery, which *USED* to be a deal breaker for me back in the day, but I've learned to live without them since I got my One, so either way it's a definite advantage but I guess how much so is up to the user. The Galaxy also has native quick settings built in which the one doesn't have (yet), so minor issue but another positive for the galaxy.
As far as negative for each, I'm actually on my second One already. Somehow my camera lense glass cracked even though I keep the phone in case and have never dropped it or bumped it. It just appeared one day in addition to the top speaker grill starting to separate from the body. Weird, but I got it replaced and the replacement is doing fine and actually stands up to overclocking and undervolting better than my old unit, so that made me pretty happy lol. That's really the only issue I've had with mine, but on the whole, the phone is definitely more fragile than the Galaxy WITHOUT a case. It scratches easier, dents, chips, etc...while the Galaxy doesn't.
The Galaxy feels better in hand (caseless) than the One, but it's slippery as hell and slides around easily and can be more prone to being dropped. Again, only an issue without a case, but this is my observation.
Touchwiz...personally I think it's a mess. I don't care for the look, as many have said it feels like your still running Gingerbread 2.3. The look hasn't changed much since I had a Vibrant running Touchwiz from 3 years ago, and while Touchwiz DOES have some unique features and generally does more than Sense and stock android...it's just ugly as hell while doing so lol. The Galaxy also does feel a tad slower and microstutters every so often while the One is almost always fluid and seems much smoother even tho it's running a newer version of android and has slightly better specs on hardware...it just doesn't "feel" like it. Other than that it's a fantastic phone and we haven't had any problems with it whatsoever unlike the One.
Between the two...if I just had to pick one, it's a toss up. I prefer my One honestly but I can see the advantages of the Galaxy S4 with it having more features so I'll just break it down like this...
Usefuleness as an actual phone
One>S4
Camera
GS4>One
In hand feel, portability
One=GS4
Usefulness as a multimedia device
GS4=One
Expandability
GS4>One
I will say that between the two if this even matters to anyone...I get WAAAAAY more props and questions and even jealous stares directed towards the One lol...

Thanks for the read, as a photographer I'm still on the fence after reading it though. I already knew all about the sensors etc. If they had just found a way to maybe use a larger lens and squeeze in a 6 or 8mp sensor I'd have gotten the One a long time ago.
And just to help contribute to some digital photography knowledge: a 6mp camera translates into about an 8x10 print without having any loss in photo quality.

As a photographer, I'm surprised that a phone camera would be a breaking point for your purchase. There is currently no phone on the market that is of enough quality to reliably provide pictures for anything other than social media and email transfer.

Well I wouldn't use my phone camera for a job, I'm not saying that all. Maybe it's more the perfectionist in me than the photographer? I've been pretty happy with my Rezounds macro capability and I like having a little wiggle room for cropping. I'm not sure if I can upload a full res example, but maybe that's for the best. It might be seen as bragging or potentially argumentative and that's not my intention. It's also the lack of microSD memory card, and non-removable battery stuff, you know. I'm probably getting one pretty soon anyway though. My phone has started acting up. I'm just one of those people, indecisive and hesitant for the most part (nothing to be proud of).

I use a high end DSLR for most pictures I take, but when I want a quick picture of something, I don't find the HTC One camera experience enjoyable at all. I don't enjoy the process of using the camera, and I generally don't enjoy the end result.
Maybe I'm just spoiled because I have an amazing DSLR, but personally, I have found the camera to be the weakest part of the HTC One.

Out of curiosity, what do you find unenjoyable about the experience of using the camera?
I think it's safe to say that many of us use DSLR's for our most important pictures and I doubt anyone expects the camera of the phone to be either a replacement for a DSLR or nearly as good. I use my One mostly for pics and videos of my kids when it's the only camera I have on me. As long as the pics are clear and natural looking, I'm pretty happy. The most disappointing aspect of the camera to me is actually the camcorder. I agree the camera is the weakest aspect of the HTC One, but with such a great device otherwise, this doesn't mean I think the camera is bad by any means.
On another note, I'm surprised by the users who have said 4.3 has offered no improvement in camera performance. My pictures look much better since updating.

I agree with using the One when it's the only camera I have, same here. However, I don't know what it is, but I just find myself not even bothering taking pictures with my phone anymore since I've gotten the one. I was using an iPhone 5 for almost a year before the One (alongside a GS3), and I wouldn't hesitate to whip out my phone and take a quick picture. But since I've gotten the One, a lot of times I think "Hey! I should take a picture!" then I just... don't feel like it. I can't pinpoint it exactly. I take probably 1/10th the amount of pictures with my phone than I used to. And I LOVE photography.
I feel that such an amazing phone should have an equally amazing camera, but for me, it leaves something to be desired.

This is a really interesting point and I think I somewhat agree. While owning an iPhone 4s, I snapped pictures all the time. Many of these were of my newborn in good lighting so image quality was generally very good. When I decided to go back to Android, I decided camera quality, ease of camera use, and likelihood of camera use were all very important considerations. I bought the HTC One EVO on Sprint and right away realized the camera wouldn't cut it. The image quality and experience left me inclined to leave the phone in my pocket rather than catch a moment on camera. I returned it and bought a GS3, the camera on which I loved and used all the time, both confidently and happily. I switched to VZW and got the S4. Maybe I'm crazy, but the S4 camera left me disappointed more often than not and again I felt less inclined to take pictures. I sold it and bought the One. I don't use the camera as often as I used the S3, and I'm not sure why though many things are different now. Maybe most significant of those differences is the fact that my once newborn is now a very active toddler who is very difficult to capture on camera in general. However, and despite this, I generally don't have as much confidence/likelihood of use of the camera on the One as I did with the S3 and iP4s.
Not trying to hijack the thread, I just wanted to share my experience and a possible reason for the hesitance peopleare having with using their cameras.
So....I really really wanted to want the One. Stayed up watching YouTube reviews last night and finally thought "ok, I'm sold." I even went into a Verizon store today and messed with one for 30-40 min just to make sure...I wasn't feeling it, I wish I did. I think they tried to make the camera more user friendly and simplistic so the general public and iPhone users might be willing to give it a chance. I think it backfired. I kept thinking "Am I in video mode or photo..ok, zoe on/off got it. How do I...why can't I...where are my options? Is that all I can adjust?" I know there are 3rd party apps that are great and roms etc. I just feel like I'm able to do things on my stock Rezound without having to jump through so many hoops. I think the One's version of sense is more limiting than I prefer. I like my options. Some of you Mac users might understand what I mean: I have snow leopard and I refuse to use lion, mountain lion, or even the new free Mavericks.
I love the One's screen, form factor, the way the memory is basically just one partition (the Rezound has it split up into 3, it's very frustrating), speakers and how snappy and fast it is.
This is just my opinion, I hope it doesn't rub anyone the wrong way. I know how taboo it is to not like the newer sense versions, almost blasphemy! Don't chew my head off!

hey I think about how Sense 2.1 would run on the HTC One all the time, lol
Sense has changed in many ways for the better, and some for the worse.
Sense 5 is a great leap from 3.5/3.6 and 4.0+ IMHO, but I do miss 2.1
That was my favorite up until now. Sense 5.5 brings some amazing battery life.
I personally like.. NEVER use my camera, so to me a camera is the last thing I need working.
For someone with kids though, and wants to document things, or travels, I'd imagine it's the first thing on the list.
Everyone is entitled to their opinion, and yours is just that, yours.
What would you like to see? It won't do much of anything but I can make a new post on HTC Elevate about suggestions to change.

Like 4.3 camera too
I honestly don't remember too much about the Sense 5.0 camera because shortly after I got my One I had it rooted and running CM 10.2. I run a used car lot so I'm constantly taking pictures of inventory for the various websites I post to. I have found the camera in HDR mode on CM to be fantastic. I had a 10MP regular 'point and shoot' camera that I retired because the photos from the One turn out so well. My guess is that people just have different expectations of what a CELL PHONE camera should produce. But if I was able to retire my regular camera, the One camera can't be that bad.

My s3 was best phone camera. My ONE is pink, so much pink and focus is hit or miss. I'm on the fence between waiting for an update or sending it back to htc to fix. I use to take pictures daily, now it's just a frustrating disappointment.

Camera question

So i am going to be getting rid of my Note 3. Ended up being too big. Thinking about the One. How is the camera really? Read mixed reviews. And how is battery life? Any input would be appreciated.

Battery life is good. Not the best, but still pretty dang good. The camera as long as you're not relying on it constantly, is also good. Its less MP but is also still pretty good. I absolutely love mine, and highly recommend it to anyone.

Worst part about the camera is that it seems to be hit or miss. First One I had, the camera was amazing. Had to warranty the phone due to blown speaker, and this camera won't focus to save a life! Going to try another. Many are having purple tint issues, noted all over the web. Might want to do a little more research if the camera is that important to you.
If the camera is hugely important, I might check other phones out. I'm on my 5th One, and finally got a camera hardware version, along with the 4.3 update that finally made it usable in low-light, etc.
But, other than that.. amazing phone. Battery life is pretty damn good.

It'll be really hard to recommend anything coming from a Note 3 since it has the best camera (overall) of any smartphone right now, not to mention the 4k video recording. You'll be happier with the S4 if camera is really important, as it's close to the quality of the Note 3. The LG G2 would be another good option as it has OIS.
I own an s4 and the one and I must say that one is a much better device. Although the two catagories you're asking about are a close call the one is a much better device imo. The battery is pretty damn good but not as good as the note 3 obviously and my camera works great unless you need to zoom and want great clarity because the low mega pixels will not allow for it but other than that I have had no problems and I prefer the photos on one over the s4 for the most part. Only other device I would recommend would probably be the g2. Hope this helped. Good luck!
You might end up with one with a purple tint, one with bad focusing, or hit a perfect one! Its a hit or miss deal with the camera. I would go for the LG G2, or S4 (locked bootloader beware).
Had previous HTC and loved it! The camera isn't that bad, but not too perfect.
