Okay... so I did something stupid.
I rooted my new Kindle Fire HD 8.9" ...and every worked perfectly. But then I installed Nova Launcher and encountered a number of bugs--the worst of which was that trying to move icons would result in the screen flipping upside down. So here's the stupid thing: I tried to unroot it without looking online.
So, first, from the Kindle Launcher I restored the system to factory defaults. That god rid of a lot of the stuff I'd added, but the system was still rooted.
So then I looked online and tried a few things to no avail. Then I finally tried the "correct" method to unroot--b4nary's binary utility--but was unable to do so. I looked online further, found nothing remotely helpful, and then decided to re-run the binary utility under the assumption it'd be like reinstalling software... (yeah, guess that's not the case).
So, anyway, that's what I did.
I ran the .bat, chose restore my data, and then the Kindle rebooted in it's super-sluggish form.
And that's where I'm stuck.
After the unlock screen I get a "complete action using" window for Home (default launcher) and Nova, and an error message on top of it saying "Process system is not responding. Would you like to close it?"
If I choose Home to launch, for example, I get another error window saying "Activity System is not responding. Would you like to close it?"
And I can still access all of the directories on my Kindle via My Computer.

So, I've heard that so long as your Kindle is at-all responsive, it's not bricked... but at the same time, I can't seem to find anyone else in the entirety of the Internet to have had the same problem. I was stupid, I know that... but does anyone have any ideas on how I might go about resolving this problem?
Personally I would try reflashing the system partition, because I don't know exactly what broke, never seen the system process crashing. Might be fixable using a different method, but unless someone else knows exactly what happened I would reboot in fastboot and use the kfhd restore utility in the 8.9 inch kf android development the section. It will be pre-rooted though and without the alternate launchers installed, but you can always put those back on.

Okay... I've made some progress. I was able to boot up Nova without getting any non-responsive errors, and from there--slowly, haltingly--was able to wind my way to the settings menu and select "reset to factory defaults." So that whole process went through and I now (finally) have a responsive Kindle.
I can boot into either Nova or Home.
The problem is, I'm missing many of the programs/applications that were part of the rooting process.
At this point I think, since I can't get b4nary's tool to unroot, I'm best off just trying to re-install everything (all that Google stuff post-rooting) and try to make the best of things. It doesn't look I'll be able to unroot without buying a special cable.
Is there any way to... I don't know, run like a diagnostic of the OS to verify that everything is functioning properly?
Okay, so I installed the various Google utilities needed as a prereq. for Google's Play Store... but quickly found I couldn't use ES File Manager fully.
As far as I can determine, the chief problem I am facing now is that the Super User application--the one that's installed on a properly-rooted Fire--is no longer on my machine... and AFAIK the only way to put it on there is to use the .bat utilitity that was the cause of all these problems in the first place.
EDIT:
Messing with the Kindle further, there's some weird stuff going on. In addition to not being able to fully use ES File Explorer, I cannot uninstall the Nova Launcher... which will not function in the first place without rooting... almost like it's only half-rooted.
U can't uninstall it because its on the system partition, and has to be for the kindle to let you use it. The system partition mounts in read only mode by default and needs root to remount in read/write mode so you can delete it.

So... what do I do now? I've been able to install Chrome, but can't install Google Play Store w/out being able to use ESFE to move stuff around inside the partition explorer, and I can't use the batch file to unroot the Kindle because it's only half-rooted and doesn't have the necessary SuperUser program (and d/ling Super User and Super SU .apks hasn't helped anything)--and, of course, trying to re-root via batch half-bricks the thing.
So... would reflashing the system partition effect anything, and if so, how exactly would I go about doing that?
Well let's put It this way, reflashing the system partition isn't going to wipe many of then apps installed or their settings or the contents of the sdcard, all it does is reflash the system partition to stock rooted, no launchers and I think it also doesn't come with Google play and its framework, so make sure to install kindle free before you do this, makes life easier after you flash it to get Google play back up and running. Since I believe the kfhd doesn't work with a fastboot cable simply plug the kindle in with USB debugging turned on, and run the command from an command prompt that's cd'd into the same folder as an adb command, like the folder binary's root comes in, and run the command in step 2 of the kfhd8.9 system restore utility. On another note, when the kindle boots into fastboot, if your PC doesn't find many drivers compatible with the device, download the drivers from my signature, and go to the device manager and there would be a device with a triangle or something on it, tell it to update driver and point it to my drivers. The rest of the instructions are in the thread the utility comes from lemme get a link to it for you.
Edit: um ignore some of my instructions as i thought the 8.9" version of this tool's page was a clone of the 7" models page with a 8.9" set of images and I was wrong, its even more straightforward than i thought. Just shut the device off and when u launch the tool hit enable fastboot, then in plug you device in. Hm... that seems very promising, but no luck so far.
I run the batch and get stuck with it "waiting for device," even long after the Kindle shows up in My Computer. Guess I'll try re-installing the drivers and retrying the batch file a few more times.
EDIT: Well, re-installed drivers and rebooted. Now My Computer isn't recognizing the Kindle at all, and the tablet is displaying a USB Compatibility error and informing me that some computers require third-party software to interact with Kindles.... it's almost funny how every single thing seems to be going wrong for me.
EDIT2: After playing around with it some more, it seems that the PC will -ONLY- recognize the Kindle (and the Kindle will ONLY not give me the USB compatibility message) when I have the drivers that auto-install from the Kindle Fire itself... using the ADB drivers results in the opposite, and SR Tool does not recognize the Kindle in either case.
Okay, several installations and reboots later and I got the drivers working properly and was able to run the SR Tool.bat utility. I was able to run 1, 3 and 4 no problem, then hit 5 and during the reboot got stuck on the loading screen.
Did it again and just did 1 and then 2 and then ended with 6.
*BTW. the options were:
1. Enable Fastboot
2. Restore-su/Supersu.apk only
3. Restore-su/Supersu.apk, Apex Launcher, phonesky.apk/vending.apk
4. Erase cache and userdata
5. Install GoogleServicesFramework.apk
6. Reboot Normally
0. Exit
Once again, rebooting takes me to the loading screen and I stay there. It's quite frozen.
Since this utility is able to do fastboot, is there any way to just clear the whole system out--get rid of all the rooting stuff and return the Fire to its original unrooted form?
EDIT: the terminology I keep see used with the SRT is "flash the system," but what does that even mean? Which of those 5 options flashes the system?
Odd maybe this isn't the right utility, it was labled the same in the android developments all about the kindle fire HD 8.9" page, lemme see if I can find the right utility.

With that being said, here's my issue;
Got a KF a couple days ago...
Yesterday, followed some online instructions to put GO Launcher EX on there to replace the carousel deal.
Followed instructions to the T.
Restarted. Got to "Choose your OS" screen (or whatever it precisely says...)
Picked GO... then it froze.
Now, when it restarts (yes, its the 30 second hard restart), it gets stuck on the Kindle Fire splash screen.
I have tried the above utilities.
I have hard restarted.
I have fully charged and ran the battery dry and tried again.
When I use the utilities, the problem is, my PC will not recognize the Kindle (it see's it as a removable storage device, but it doesn't click over to 'Kindle', and thus the utilities can't interact with the device itself, I suppose).
I've tried different USB ports and connecters (I have 2 regular kindles in the house, too). But I know all the peripherals work through cross-testing.
Essentially, what else can I do? (I got it from WalMart, and they're currently out of stock, so I can't return it till next week, but I'd like it fixed before then if possible)
I've tried several different methods from these forums too, but I *always* hit the same snag... whenever any utility is 'waiting for device', it simply will not find it, because the PC doesn't see it properly. It sees *something* (removable storage) but not as a kindle, and thus won't allow the utilities to interface with it.
Are there any physical things I can do to hard reset it without destroying any warrantys?

from what you say i think you have a bad launcher on it and the kf tries to start it but can't
first i need to know if you have fff (custom bootloader - yellow triangle) on it ?
then do you have a recovery (twrp) on it ?
what os/bit of computer ?
In kindle utility go to bootmodes and enter normal (4000). Just had that problem last night.

Do you have all the kf drivers installed on your computer? I know that when I unbricked mine I had all the drivers installed but I had to reinstall them for some reason. If you do not have them I can post them later on tonight when I'm at home. However, I have TWRP installed on mine, and Cyanogenmod 7.2, so hopefully yours is able to connect to your computer.

In order to remove the bad launcher, you need to have your device connected to your computer to remove it using adb.

what i had done wrong is that i didnt root the KF before trying to install the GO... software (i think)
b63 had a heck of a time trying to discern the problem with me being about as useful as a dead fish, but get there he/she did
after much fanangaling, b63 managed to install the TWRP and ADP on my KF, allowing it to fastboot, and basically allowing it to be read by my PC, and so fixed.
im sure it would have taken b63 all of 5 minutes in real time, but using the quirky teamview and my slow net speed didn't help
still, thanks VERY MUCH to b63 for fixing the **** out of my KF, and being very helpful and patient all along!

Just wanted to drop b63 a note here that I "thanks"ed their post above - not necessarily for the post but for going above and beyond. The people on these forums are (for the most part) really great. (Too bad there have to be a few who are demanding of the developers to get this feature or that fix done faster without taking into account that the devs do this all in their free time.)

okay, I already did that by editing the android sdk(as a prerequisite to rooting, which I planned to do eventually) - so when I connect my fire it first shows up as a kindle, and after updating the software through windows and installing drivers through KFU, it comes up as an android device and the interface is adb composite. Now if I try to install TWRP through KFU it keeps switching between adb composite interface and plain adb. And both KFU and KUFU keep waiting but are unable to find my device.
also, my fire alternately shows up as a usb composite device and an android device. PLEASE help
okay I solved it with KFU (finally!) although I have no clue how I did it as I didn'tdo anything I hadn't tried earlier so, managed to install TWRP and then wiped everything and finally my fire could be read - then I deleted go launcher and now my fire is back from the grave

Tried rooting my KF, but couldn't change permissions and thus could not install android market. Superuser didn't do anything other than show me a log folder that had no logs. Tried to change permissions on /system and /apps with one of the file management apps on amazon and it said the device *wasn't* rooted, despite GO launcher and android interface.
Did a factory wipe to try to reroot or fully(?) root the KF, and that's when it all went wrong. Got stuck on boot loop, but KFU helped me break out of that. Now it's stuck on the Kindle Fire splash screen with no animation. I read somewhere that this was the fastboot getting "stuck."
At any rate, i have TWRP 2.0 installed and can mount and unmount the device in its interface, but it is only recognized as ADB android device, or when mounted via TWRP, USB composite device. As such, ADB commands only work occasionally - all other times it simply says <waiting for device>.
I am running Windows 7 64 bit, and 6.3 on the KF. All restarts on the KF are hard restarts, except occasionally cmd lets me fastboot reboot.
I have spent the past 2 days trying everything I have found online (2 KF unbrick applets, 15+ tabbed browsers with different threads) to no avail. I am finally posting, pleading for assistance.

edit: when rerunning KFU, i kept getting the message that many execs failed because "/system/bin/sh" directory does not exist.
I don't know if that helps narrow down what might be happening, but I saw that coming up a lot in the cmd prompt.

with an emphasis on post #2. You need to know what mode your device is in by looking at the device manager and make sure your drivers are loading correctly for that mode. If you can get to TWRP, you can mount your USB mass storage device, copy a new zip file of either the stock software or a custom ROM and flash it.

I followed the guide and got to a point where the Kindle Fire animation was playing. It loaded up to the unlock screen and then automatically shut itself down - would not stay on when either connected or disconnected. Tried installing a ROM but still shut down. Started the recovery and hit factory reset, still auto shutdown. Tried clearing a partition as described in the tutorial and now it's fully bricked. Will not turn on when connected to computer, to outlet, to another cable.

i only wanted to root it so i could be able to install Google Market, or Play as the kids call it now days. i proceded with the tutorial from liliputing on how to root the kindle 6.3. i cant post the link as im a n00b.
at first seemed like it was ok, but the market chrashed a lot, so i triet to unroot it, again with KFU. bad idea. my Kindle is now stuck on the loading screen, it just says Kindle Fire with the android on top. ADB cant find the device. i already tried using Kindle Fire Unbricker, but it just stays there, waiting for the device. the power button glows, but thats all. nothing happens.
i read something about a factory cable, but 1.- i seriously lack any electrical habilities, and 2.- english is not my mother language, so i didint wanted to risk it... more.
please, help.

Factory cable gets it into fastboot. Easy enough.
Try reinstalling the drivers. Since it's not recognizing. If everything keeps "waiting" for the device.
But you may get alot of read or use the search functions in the forum. =/
There are ALOT of threads with people that have bricked their KF.

Try boring into recovery.
1. Power off the kindle
2. Click the power button once to turn it on.
3. When the KF logo comes up and the absurd ontop, hold the power button for three seconds, then let go. You should boot into recovery within five to ten seconds.
4. Scroll down to factory reset. Click it.
If that failed, try to reinstall the drivers like this.
1. Plug in the kindle to your computer while its on.
2Goto devices and printers
3. Do you see "kindle" listed anywhere? If so, double click on it, then uninstall the drivers.
4. Goto where you have the kindle fire utility installed (not the unbrick utility) and double click install_drivers.bat and reinstall the drivers. (NOTE: You must have ADB working with the Google usb driver installed for this to work)
5. The drivers should install correctly. Run the kindle fire unbrick utility and let the magic happen.
Kindle Fire running KANG CM9
New developer, working on my own custom rom
i have done a very similar thing with my Kindle Fire, tried to root it, but google play would not down load any apps. I did a factory reset as I thought i would bring it back to the "out of the Box" state, but instead it wiped everything. I have run the Kindle Fire unbrick utill and managed to get the device to boot up into the CWM recovery, mounted the SD card and was able to read it in Windows after i formatted it as Fat32. I then copied the stock 6.3 Kindle.bin file to the SDcard. renamed the .bin file to .zip and via CWM managed to install the zip file. But when i select the device to boot into normal mode i get it hanging on the Kindle Fire logo. Now I have a message to say that the battery is to low at 24% and wait until it charges, but it doesnt appear to be charging.
If I run the kindle fire util it tells me it is offline, I have to run the Kindle brick utill to get it back to a state where i can run adb commands, but the boot mode remains unknown.
I do have another Kindle fire here (the wife's one) so if anyone has any ideas how I can get the bricked on back either by the utils and a stock image or taking a backup of the working Kindle and trying to install it on mine.
I am knew to this Anroid kindle stuff so sorry if I am missing a simple step, but any help would be great. 3 days trying to get this back

I had my kindle rooted and was trying to install the android market (google play). I previously installed google frameworks or what ever its called, so I didn't worry about that. I went here:

and downloaded the apk directly onto my kindle fire. I used file expert to go to system/app and mounted it Read/Write. Then I copied the apk into the folder. Next, I changed the permissions to Owner - Read/Write, Group - Read, Others - Read. I went into the folder to install the apk, and then file expert crashed. I didn't think it was a big deal, but then it crashed again. Before I knew it, settings crashed, then the home and bar with notifications and times crashes are well. I decided to try to reboot my kindle. When I turned it on, I got a yellow triangle. It said to press the power button, and I did. After a few seconds, it started to turn on again. It's been two hours and the kindle hasn't turned on yet. I tried turning of the kindle again by pressing and holding the power button, but when I tried to turn it on again, the yellow triangle showed up again. Without me doing anything, it continued on to the the boot up screen. And its been stuck like this...it won't turn on...please help me!

Hello all,
I need some help and guidance in fixing my Kindle Fire. Some background:
My Kindle Fire was on 6.3.1 when I rooted it, no custom roms, just root so I can get Google Framework on it since I use Google Docs and the Google Market. After about a week or so, I decided I wanted to go back to an unrooted Fire so I can get access to my stock book reading app and Instant VOD.
I had FFF and TWRP on my Kindle Fire as well, running Windows 7 64bit Home Premium
After much searching, every unroot guide kept pointing me back to flashing the stock rom. So I downloaded the latest update.zip through KFU, booted into TWRP, wiped, installed the update.zip, and rebooted.
After that, I hit the Kindle Fire logo, static, and it hangs there. I power off and on, still hangs. I don't have the blue/white FFF recovery anymore so booting into recovery wasn't an option. I then connected the Kindle to my computer, opened KFU, and tried to change the boot option through option 1, and every time I change it, Fastboot, Normal boot, etc. it sends the command, Kindle reboots, but then hangs again on the static logo.
I tried reinstalling FFF and TWRP through KFU to try and reflash, but it shows as preparing, then waiting for device, and nothing. Again, just hanging.
I even tried the manual shell commands I've seen around the forums and in the Kindle Fire for Beginners Guide, but I keep hanging on "Waiting for device" in the cmd prompt.
I don't know what else to do and I'm becoming more confused with the different types of issues that everyone is reporting, with each one have one detail different from my situation. I had no custom roms, just a root, and it seems I may have flashed a bad stock rom.
Any help is greatly appreciated. I apologize if this was solved somewhere else, but I searched numerous threads and guides, but they all dealt with something going wrong with a custom rom or people getting to the animated Kindle Fire logo, where as mine is just static.

Sounds like it's stuck in fastboot bootmode to this noob. I had the same problem at one point and used command line to fix with the simple bootmode switching commands - can't recall if I used fastboot or adb tools..but either should work. And if I'm reading your post right, you've tried these so this is likely above my meager skill level, heh. You are handling it better than I did, I might add.

There are apps in the Google Play store that will temporarily remove your root status so you are able to use services that detect and shut down when root is detected. OTArootkeeper.apk is one that I've heard of.
And don't ever chose to lose fff once you have that as this is your lifeline to unbricking.
Hopefully someone with better chops than I on this will post up - continue with your patient reading and take a little comfort that this is most probably fixable.
First off, I applaud you for trying to figure out and fix the problem yourself using the guides available. Thank you. The information you provided will go a long way to getting the help you need.
So far it seems you've done everything right, but to be sure, you should check to make sure your drivers are in order (most likely the problem). The second post of the Beginners Guide will help you with that.
Once you have done that and you still can't change your bootmode, try using recovery to flash a custom rom. It's possible the stock boot image you have has been corrupted. You can use the "mount" function in recovery to push another rom to your sdcard. If that works you can stick with a custom rom like MoDaCo. It's the same stock stock interface with Google apps and services installed and you don't have to worry about OTA updates. OTA Rootkeeper will let you easily switch between "rooted" and "unrooted" so you can take advantage of Amazon's VOD.
And if you still want pure stock you can d/l a new copy of the update and try again.
Thanks for the suggestion. I did try OTA Rootkeeper, but when I went into my Instant VOD, it still had the buttons grayed out. I tried temp unroot, reboot Kindle, and still grayed out, so I assumed Rootkeeper wasn't working for me, thus, the looking for the unroot tutorials.
A little bit of extra information, when I hook up my Kindle Fire, my drivers says Android Composite ADB Interface. When I try to switch to Fastboot to have it switch to Android ADB Interface, it doesn't switch. It just stays as Composite.

So far it seems you've done everything right, but to be sure, you should check to make sure your drivers are in order (most likely the problem). The second post of the Beginners Guide will help you with that.

I followed the advice in the Beginners Guide, uninstalled whatever drivers I had, rebooted my comp, then installed the ones that came with the KFU download.
Are there any other drivers I should be looking for?
Also, a little bit of more information, I tried switching to Fastboot through KFU, received some messages to the effect of "system/some file name file not found (2)", (I apologize for not being specific, typing from memory), it then reboots my Kindle Fire, then I execute the commands:
fastboot getvar product
After that, it just says <waiting for device>
In fact, after any command I do in cmd, I get that message. So I believe it may be a driver issue, like was suggested, or my Kindle isn't far enough into the boot process to be found.
It definitely sounds like a driver issue. Keep working on your drivers.
If that doesn't work, you can try it on a different computer OR set up a Linux LiveUSB for issuing adb/fastboot commands.

I tried reinstalling FFF and TWRP through KFU to try and reflash, but it shows as preparing, then waiting for device, and nothing. Again, just hanging.
I even tried the manual shell commands I've seen around the forums and in the Kindle Fire for Beginners Guide, but I keep hanging on "Waiting for device" in the cmd prompt.
I don't know what else to do and I'm becoming more confused with the different types of issues that everyone is reporting, with each one have one detail different from my situation. I had no custom roms, just a root, and it seems I may have flashed a bad stock rom.
Any help is greatly appreciated. I apologize if this was solved somewhere else, but I searched numerous threads and guides, but they all dealt with something going wrong with a custom rom or people getting to the animated Kindle Fire logo, where as mine is just static.

I think twrp got deleted when I reinstalled the kindle update. So I can't do what you said. When I turn my kindle on it gets stuck at that kindle fire logo. I can't go into recovery or anything. I can't re install twrp because it KFU says my kindle in online but when i click install twrp it says waiting for device.

I am stuck at the very same place you are. I was in an endless bootloop after trying to flas back to the Stock Amazon ROM using TWRP. Once i got the drivers sorted out and ADB could see my device i used KFU to "Install permanent Root with Superuser". The KF went to reboot into fastboot and the screen said "waiting for device" for about ten minutes. Now the KF is stuck at the white and orange "kindle Fire" boot logo. Windows will no longer see the KF as an android device. It only shows up as an "unknown device" in the device manager.

Ok, I dont know, how to fix this (as I was not in this situation). Try following the steps - Download update.zip through KFU. Connect your Kindle to PC and install the android driver. If your PC detects the kindle copy update.zip file to kindle and try to install that.

Im in the same boat you are. I have tried everything stuck on same logo device is recognized in devices as android phone and adb interface but cannot connect to unbrick utility or KFU and doesnt show as a drive either. tried to search devices in cmd using fastboot commands and nothing shows either. I decided to purchase a factory cable today on ebay. Keeping my fingers crossed because after reading everything I could find I think it is my only option.
No, your problem is as "simple" as fixing your drivers so the computer can communicate with the device through adb and fastboot. KFU relies on those two tools to do pretty much anything. Unfortunately, Windows is stupid and is not very effective when dealing with certain USB devices.
In order to, say, install TWRP, you need adb to change the bootmode to accept fastboot commands, and use fastboot commands to overwrite the recovery partition. In the process of going between different boot modes, Windows had a hissy fit and decides not to communicate with the device at all. Hence the need to fix/reinstall the drivers. It doesn't always work out that way and you get stuck where you are right now. A factory cable will put you in fastboot, but it wont make Windows communicate with the device. You can continue to fight with Windows drivers and hope to get lucky, or you could try other, more effective options...

I run into " SoupKit" for Linux ... install it... mess around with the Bootloader .. change it to 4002 I believe the value was ... my Kindle that I've been working on for literally 6 hrs is back on! ... now on the figuring out how to root it / remove demo software. I'm not a stupid person, but I am a slightly distracted widowed father of a three-year-old, and I've become so frustrated that I can't think straight!
I'm not a developer, but I've always easily rooted my devices by following the instructions. Until the Kindle came along.
I had all kind of trouble, wrong drivers, general mistakes, etc. Finally, everything appeared to be working, and then I had a hard drive crash during the root process. TWRP was installed, but, apparently, nothing else.
Took it to a second computer, downloaded KFU, installed drivers, ran. Partial success. TWRP appeared to be running smoothly. Downloaded ROM (Don't even remember which, Kindle has been thrown in drawer for weeks!) ROM appeared to install, but wouldn't boot. Here's where I got extra-stupid:
Obviously, something is already wrong with my Kindle, but at least I can see it in device manager. At least I can access it through KFU. For some insane reason, I began trying everything I could think to do, and eventually got TWRP into a recovery bootloop. Yay, me!
Now, I've screwed around on multiple computers, in Windows and Ubuntu. I'm completely confused as to which drivers are loaded where, Kindle shows up in Device Manager as a phone, but does not show up as a drive in Windows Explorer, and KFU, while it runs just fine, alternates between between telling me that it's "waiting for device," or "the system cannot find the drive specified."
Help on the Forums has been wonderful, but I am beyond that. My last post was answered with "Which drivers have you installed?" Well, crap! I don't know. I probably knew a month ago when the problem started, but I can't think rationally (where the Kindle is concerned, I seem to do OK in real life) anymore!
Now, I know that I've got so much crap going on, that most of you don't want to trash up the forum by trying to address my multiple issues. Please do not post "Have you tried the search tool?" Re-read my far too long post. I don't even know what the crap to search for anymore!
So, finally, here's my question? Anybody want to try their hand at fixing my F-'d up Kindle? It's not doing me a bit of good as is so, even if I mail it to someone and they just keep it I haven't really lost much!
All I want is a nice, stable (STABLE!) Gingerbread or ICS ROM that my little boy can watch Netflix on. I'll gladly pay anyone a reasonable amount to anyone willing to take this problem off my hands...
If you have TWRP installed can you mount the USB drive in it and then flash what you want?
When I mount usb storage in twrp, it does allow me to access the device on the computer, which is much better than I was getting. When I run KFU it still stated that it cannot find the device. If I run Kindle Unbrick, it open the command line, then just hangs up.

No need to run KFU... Just copy FFF to the Kindle and flash from TWRP. Then copy what rom you want and Flash from TWRP.
And, make sure you flash the FFF version (1.4a) in this thread:

Your download should be named: fff-u-boot_v1.4a.zip.
You will see some notes in that thread about NOT flashing this file, but those are for an older zip. This is a flashable .zip ... I just installed (flashed) it last week from TWRP.
(P.S.) Your KF is not in as bad of shape as you might think. This is a quick fix with the right setup.
I had a similar problem. First you should download Kindle Fire Drivers(the one that came with KFU didn't work...) and install it. Then in TWRP mount the SD card. Update the drivers using that Kindle Fire Driver folder(I will upload it and give you the link). Then with KFU press 1(bootmode) and then 1 again(normal). I think this should get you out of bootloop. If that doesn't work, just flash the Kindle Fire Stock Rom.

When I said install Kindle Fire Drivers I meant download. Then manually install the drivers(My Computer, right click,
properties, hardware, and open up device manager. If you get android device or something, click on it. If you see Kindle with a ! then click on update drivers and select the kindle fire driver folder. If you don't see kindle, or if you see Android device, then uninstall. Then go to disk drives and find your kindle fire and uninstall. Close and re-open, and you should see Kindle! Then update the drivers. Open up KFU and change bootmode to normal. Do a 20 sec. hard reset and see if it boots. If your trying to install a Custom ROM(ICS or honeycomb) put the .zip file on you kindle fire. Then open up TWRP and choose Wipe, and Factory Reset. Then wipe Cache and Dalvik Cache. Then go to install and select the ROM. After install the boot may take awhile. You said you tried this but you got stuck in bootmode, so make sure you follow these instructions. Make a backup if you ever want to go back. Move the backup to your computer as it takes up almost 1.5gb of space. Please inform me if this doesn't help. Sorry if I'm not good at giving instructions,but I'm only 14.

RobWoodall - hang in there, because a lot of us were exactly in your shoes. For the life of me I can't get most of the ubuntu stuff to work, and windows was a bit of a nightmare for drivers until sorted out. I bootlooped, thought I bricked, etc etc but all sorted out in the end.
The fact you can see it in device manager is good. What you need to do is to replace the drivers with the 'Android Composite ADB Interface' - this video may help you out
I'm sure folks here will try to help you out without taking your money

Thanks, but the link appears to be unavailable at this time. I'm not hopeful, as I have been quite able to install ROMs. For all I know they are running perfectly. My most immediate problem seems to be that I'm trapped in a bootloop, and no matter what I do, the Kindle always boots into TWRP. Apparently I'm in boot mode 5001, and I should be in mode 4000 or some such. KFU should be able to change the boot mode, but it only gives me "waiting for device."

Use sudo command in ubuntu power it off type sudo fastboot getvar product plug your kindle in it should return kindle as a response your kindle then your kindle will be in fastboot then type sudo fastboot oem idme bootmode 4000 hit enter then type sudo fastboot reboot it should boot in normal mode

Thanks! I think I love you! Worked perfectly. I'm now running CM7 Barebones, because that's the last ROM I had tried to flash. Now that I understand the process, I'll certainly experiment with other ROMs, but Bare Bones looks pretty darn good after staring at the TWRP menu for a month and a half!
P.S. Nope! My system wasn't bad, the operator was!!! LOL!

I really appreciate everyone's help! I've been sharing the nook with my three-year-old. He's a pretty smart kid but, once he learned how to change icons and wallpaper, install and uninstall apps, it's a completely different experience every time I turned it on. I bought the Kindle so I could have MY OWN tablet!
If anyone is still reading this thread, please give me some recommendations for ROMs. I typically only use Google Play Books, Contacts and Calendar, Aldiko Reader and Netflix. I'm not in the market for fastest or fanciest, but most stable. I don't care if it's Gingerbread or ICS (Heck, even Honeycomb if it's stopped sucking!) So what do you all say?
What's the most stable ROM out there for a person who needs Google compatibility on the Kindle Fire?
My kindle fire 2 rooted was working fine until I launched this program called GOLauncher. I didn't like it and tried to uninstall it, but the darn thing wouldn't remove and the the next time I turned on my kindle, all I would get was a flashing loading screen. Nothing else. I soon thereafter discovered (when the 1-step program I had previous successfully used about 10 times before) would go no further that daemon starting. I noticed that instead of a Kindle in my device manager, there was now only a Portable Device with E: showing as active.
I've tried every solution I could find from here, but 90% of them assume you have the whole driver .exe to install or some other such stuff. Every driver that doesn't, doesn't work for my computer, and won't put the kindle device back on my computer. So now, I have no way to communicate between my kindle and my computer, which I need to do frequently.
I've uninstalled each adb between installs, I've tried all the drivers I can find, I've deleted hidden devices (there were no kindles there either)
Plus, I can't get these apps I installed on the third party sites (which I miss) to uninstall. All they say is "move to favorites" in both my app folder and in the cloud. I am assuming it's because I no longer am able to access those sites.
Could someone please help me? I'm pretty computer literate, except where it comes to DOS commands. Sigh, the one thing I didn't learn in high school.
I promise I've been spent the last 5 days and nights (and even restored my device to factory settings just to get it to work) searching through so many pages of this site that I'm starting to get confused. Will someone please help me?
OK lemme get this straight, you are stuck in a boot loop at the kindle logo and want adb access but nothing is showing up( except maybe a portable device)? If its showing up as a portable device during a boot loop that strikes me as odd, usually you don't have adb access during a bootloop , much less and mtp connection. If it's stuck in a boot loop you will typically need a fastboot cable to get out of it. Also what os are you running? I might be of more assistance after I get a better idea of what your kindle is doing exactly.

This is what happened. I installed a program from the Google Play store, wasn't happy with it, and botched the uninstallation. I was messing around on my computer to see how I could fix the problem (after just rooting hubby's kindle fire 2nd generation and discovering I had not ADB drivers and my device manager wasn't recognizing my requests). I notice that once again the kindle is missing on device manager when plugged in to the computer. What is showing up is a Portable Device labeled E:. So I go looking for answers here.
One of the things I noticed I could do with the broken kindle was that about 1 out of 5 times it was on, I could swipe the top of the screen and have the settings menu come up. And out 1 out of those 5 times, I could actually get a setting to appear by pressing on it. So I literally spent 17 hours trying to time the swipe, press, press to get the restore to factory settings program to work. And when it finished, I had a useable device, but all the kindle programs were gone (they were still on my cloud) and I could run all the programs installed from other android stores (but I can't uninstall them). And, of course, I can't get my computer to recognize the device. But I do have program called file manager that allows me access to shared files on my family's three computers so I can transfer files over the LAN if I need to.

I am running an Intel i5 with 64-bit Windows 7 Home Premium Service Pack 1. It has all Microsoft updates and it is my pristine baby that I bought 18 months ago (my last computer was 9 years old that I built with an AMD processor and an 17 and 20 GB hard drives that were donated to me. It was a real POS, but it's still running to this day as a backup.
I know the feeling, before i got my new laptop from a friend a few weeks ago i had a pc with a pentium 4 and 2gb of ram, and like 3 hard drives. Anyways I'm assuming at this point you want to try restoring the system partition? Have you tried the drivers in my signature for adb access? If you can reboot into fastboot you could restore the system image from kindle fire first aid, should fix any problems with the os. It all depends on if USB debugging is turned on on your kindle, and if you can get the PC to detect it as such, usually I would just uninstall the MTP device and try searching for drivers on the new device detected and point it to my drivers.

Thanks for both of your information. I did get the ADB drivers to show up - in the most stupid of ways. I changed from by brand new monster gold plated cable to a Wal-Mart special. Suddenly, everything worked perfectly! I use KFFirstAide to restore the device to the #1 setting, and then rooted it using the #23 setting. I also installed the Google Play store (though I installed the wrong, more complicated, version of if the first time.
Now I have a problem I can't see to fix. Ever since I got everything set up, there are certain programs on my kindle (cloud and device) that I can't get rid of. They are No Lock, Talk, News & Weather, Majic Locker, Google Voice, and Gl Launcher HD. I've tried downloading both ES Task and File Manager and deleting or startup disabling these apps, and while they say they are deleted, they reappear back on the active list as soon as I turn on my device (yes, I've rebooted), but I can't get them off my kindle Apps pages. And Go Launcher starts up every single time I turn on my device, and I hate this program, because it is not what I was looking for. Now I always have to look at it.
These .apk's are all in the system/apps folder. That's why I've tried to use the above file apps to get rid of them.
Also, my Silk browser doesn't work (I can open it and it immediately closes), and while I know I can download dolphin browser or firefox, I want the browser built for tablet speed and efficiency. Plus, when I had multiple browsers before, I always got the popup asking me which app I wanted to use to perform that function. But I can't find an apk for silk anywhere, and my device won't uninstall Silk.
Can anyone help? I feel so stupid about the cable issue. You wouldn't think a 3 day old cable would not properly transfer data.
OK to fix your launcher, go into the setting>apps and find go launcher and clear its defaults. That's kinda unspecific but I haven't been on amazon os for a while. To get rid of system apps, use es file explorer, enable root access, if on the older version, mount the system, if you have a panel on the left its the new version. Anyways from there you can simply hold down on the app and hit delete. Not too sure why silk isn't on the list. Though I though I might say consider this, you have no way of using flash with silk, so other browsers are kinda useful because you can. Then again I like flash. Kinda sounds like silk got deleted.

If its showing up as a portable device during a boot loop that strikes me as odd, usually you don't have adb access during a bootloop , much less and mtp connection. If it's stuck in a boot loop you will typically need a fastboot cable to get out of it. Also what os are you running? I might be of more assistance after I get a better idea of what your kindle is doing exactly.

I have gotten several tablets to respond to ABD commands while soft bricked or not booting all the way. This is actually how I became an authorized MID repair facility. I have repaired a few kindle's that would only boot the to logo. If the device is loading as portable device, go to device manager, update driver for portable device, manually update the driver to whatever ADB driver you have extracted and it should at least respond to adb wipe command. once done you should be able to use the KFU to restore the tablet to factory state.
At least this is the process that has worked for me several times.
