Question about replacing Kernels - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Bit of a noob question, but how do I replace my phones Kernel ? Is it something built into the ROM I download or can I reaplce it independant of the ROM ? I am wondering if this may fix my gyro / accelerometer problem..
Thanks
Ian

Just flash your Kernel.zip from CWM or TWRP.

Yes, it is something built into the ROM, every ROM has it's own stock Kernel.
And yes, you can replace your ROM's stock Kernel. Be careful though, you have to choose the right Kernel for your phone's ROM.
Not sure if changing the Kernel will fix the gyro of your phone.
Better watch a video guide about flashing kernels and rooting :/

JellyBean isn't fully stable on our DHD/I4G just yet. There are always going to be some issues because HTC didn't give us a full 3.0 kernel for ICS. That could be the reason you are experiencing some lag. Kernels could also help you, try the KangBang performance kernel, although the kernel is leaning towards performance, so it could cause instability
I bought the xda app. Problem?

I can't link to the kernel (cause I'm lazy and on the xda app). But when you install a kernel wipe your cache and Dalvik Cache and then flash. That's the proper way of flashing a kernel

Hey thanks for the reply, yeah i successfully installed the stable and performance kernel from this thread : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1931386
But the gaming performance still lags compared to 2.3.5. I guess its due to not being fully stable yet.
I had an idea, what if i flash the stock 2.3.5 kernel? Would i get stock performance back or not?

You'll ruin your phone. A 2.3.X kernel I'd meant for that specific version of Android. If you mix versions (e.g. a Gingerbread kernel with a Jelly Bean ROM) you'll most likely get bootloops and your phone. At worst you'll brick your phone. Don't ever mix kernel versions. Also don't flash a Sense kernel on a AOSP/AOKP/CyanogenMod based ROM (or vice versa), you'll also have a phone that won't boot.

Hey, thanks for the reply. Yeah I was guessing it had something to do with the kernel. I tried a kernel yesterday not sure which one it was from memory, but when I put the kernel zip onto the phone and installed it through recovery it said install complete. But when I rebooted the phone it gets stuck on a black screen. I can't do anything else unless I take the battery out. I was wondering if anyone can give me a link to the kangbang kernel and instructions in how to install properly if the recovery mode isn't the right way, even though it said kernel updated successfuly. Thanks!

The only compatible alternative kernel for JB is the KangBang (at least that i know of). If you flashed another one, that might be why it booted to a black screen.

Yes, you can use any kernel. No need to reinstall the ROM.
Kernel and ROM are placed separately, changing one will not harm the other one.
That also means, you can change kernels at any time.
But make sure, that you use ICS ROM with ICS kernel, GB ROM with GB kernel and JB ROM with JB kernel. Otherwise your phone will not boot. If such things happen, try another kernel.
especial thanks ,for ur especial answer my bro

[Q] CM10.2 Kernel Choices?

Quick question if I wanted to install for example TripNDroid's kernel on a CM10.2 (4.3) ROM should I repack the kernel to get it to boot. I haven't tried a straight install yet, and the reason I ask this is the Kernel's don't explicitly state support for any AOSP version greater than 4.2.2. I've searched this but can't seem to find an answer.

Try both...if you have a backup you cannot really screw up. You can always restore and flash stock boot.img.
I would recommend a repack to accommodate possible/probable ramdisk changes between 4.2.2 and 4.3.
Lastly, the kernel DOES NOT officially support 4.3 so it may not work at all.
Thanks for the help to both of you I will try the repack if that fails I'll just restore the nandroid or attempt to reflash the CM10.3 boot.img

Original Kernel on custom rom possible?

Dear friends,
I have flashed resurrection remix 5 on my N7100.But i have battery drain and Bluetooth earphone connection problems. Can i fix theese by installing original kernel on this custom rom?may them work togehter without any problems? Thanks.
I don't think so... since RRemix is not sammy based but AOKP/AOSP... so you will need to find another custom kernel.

i dont have these issues with RR..!!
IF u want 100% stability try a touchwiz based rom.. That is your best bet..!!
Omni rom if you want to try a kitkat rom..!
I always use agni kernel..!

I flashed Omnirom 4.4 Kitkat.Everything is ok exept bluetooth. There is a adaptation problem. And when i try to call or answer a call, phone freezes and i have to reboot it.So can i fix the problem by flashing AGNI kernel?I think it has two versions as Pure Stock and Pure CM.What is the difference between them, and which one do you advice me to flash?

of course Pure CM.. Agni Pure Stock is for Stock based touchwiz ROM..
if problem still there, then maybe its a bug from the ROM itself..

Here you go. Link
@Zayn1 your request is incorrect.
Because kernel is also constituted by custom libraries, residing in /system.
By flashing kernel, you would mess up the device with incompatible libraries.
The solution is much simple: you have to reflash the full rom from recovery.
Both kernel and system libraries will be replaced with official ones.
