[Q] Battery drain - Galaxy S 4 Mini Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, I've got my S4 mini week ago and I was really satisfied with battery life, but suddenly yesterday my battery went crazy and right now, I get over 10% battery drain per hour, with just simple use. I didn't perform root or anything else with my phone. Please does anyone know where should be the problem? I don't wanna go to service with my phone in first week that I have it.
I've attached picture of my battery use.
Thank you for your answers..

Judging by the screenshot, the battery drain seems to be quite ok - you have made some phone calls, the screen was on for longer time as it seems.
Try to test the battery drain without using the phone.
To get more detailed information about battery usage, you can try Better Battery Stats (here on XDA http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1179809 or in Play store) or Wakelock Detector (in Play store) apps.

I have the same problem. One time i killed about 20 apps and my stats looks like below
but when i restarted phone baterry problem come back. Now i don't know what i killed, but i try to find it.
PS
I have 9192 phone. (3G, wifi, gps are disable)

Get an app which offers some better statistics. I would recommend BetterBatteryStats, but since it costs two bucks you can try your luck with WakeLock Detector first (sorry, not allowed to post links). What you want to look into first is, if your phone is going into deepsleep mode when you are not using it. Wakelocks wake your phone from deepsleep and this costs battery life. Install one of the above apps (if it is BBS activate the WatchDog from Settings), reboot your phone and put it away for an hour or do this over night. Then check if there apps which keep your phone awake. Good luck.
P.S.: It seems there is a bug in Android 4+ which causes battery drain on some devices, including Samsung devices. It occurs suddenly and can be stopped by a reboot. Google: android issue 22878
The ticket is from 2011 but was recently marked as obsolete, whatever that means.
cheers

[Q] Battery Drain - Yet another whining thread - CM7.2

Hello all together
I'm browsing xda for a little more than a year now. You guys helped me a lot!
First I want to apology my english, I hope you understand what I want to say
Not a long time ago the battery of my WFS lasted up to 3 days (incredible if I think of it now).
That was with a self rooted stock rom and some changes (bravia, turboboost script, oc-kernel, etc.).
Out of nowhere I had problems with my calendar.sync.provider. Processes htc.bg and htc.bgp used the most of my battery (found out with Battery Mix).
I could watch the percent falling... Battery was getting very hot.
After i killed calendar.provider and calendar itself those bg-processes disappeared and all went back to normal.
Installed m1nd's rom, tried a lot of different settings, used calengoo instead of normal calendar (uninstalled the other)...
But battery life was never the same since then.
We also had a really rough winter and I was outside a lot. my battery began to drain faster. First I began to install apps like "auto wifi toggle" to stop that battery drain, after all I just bought a new battery this spring - 1500mAh.
But other than i expected - battery life did not increase. So I decided to install CM7.2 (wanted to do it anyway - great work btw!).
And guess what, nothing changed...
You will find some screenshots at the end... (did barely use the phone this 4 hours)
So what can I do? I'm desperate. The battery does not hold the whole day...
Please give me some tipps (if you have others than the general battery saving thread) or at least cheer me up
tl;dr: Phone works for 10h (mail, text, no phones, no games) - Changing battery & ROM does not fix battery drain...
Thank you in advance!
it happens to me too unfortunately, i charge it everyday or every 2 days
when i play a small mini game for a few minutes, battery drains like over 10% in a few minutes.
Have you tried calibrating the battery?

No such thing, its a myth!

Hey scilax can you please tell me how to. Calibrate the battery.
Me too get a smaller backup when 3g is used for some 3 to 4 hours.
Please tell about that calibrating
Sent from my Wildfire S using XDA
Thing is, I charge my phone everyday. And I've been using CM7 or CM9, battery life never lasts more than a day. If it's only lasting 4-10 hours. Check your sync settings. Keep it only on 2G networks if using data. Get a battery saving application, in my opinion, it sounds like your using a lot of mobile data/wifi.

what happened to my battery?

So a few days ago I installed Nova Launcher, got root, changed my dpi to 170, applied the screen off SMS fix, and installed accuweather. I feel like battery life has decreased considerably. I usually don't leave my phone plugged in overnight, but did yesterday. Today, I am down to 81% with 22m on screen time -- at this rate, I would get an hour and a half on a full charge, where I've gotten 3 days and 5 hours of on screen time before when the phone was 100% stock. I had the phone in airplane mode for most of the day, but the battery graph still shows a sharper than usual decline. I just uninstalled accuweather to see if that would help, and will do a complete drain this charge cycle. Anyone else seen something similar to this?
I installed nova launcher prime and my battery life is still amazing. Although I'm not rooted, I wouldn't think that root is the issue. Have you installed an app that has gone rogue and is constantly running? For my part devices that was the problem most of the time. Check your battery stays to see if you can identify which app is exhausting your battery and if you can't, my suggestion is to hard reset to get better results.
One of the great things about the note is the battery life. It would suck to have this advantage become a disadvantage. Good luck

Search for better battery stats here on Xda. You can get the paid app for free (though I recommend purchasing it).
It may help you identify the app, or service eating cycles, or draining your battery.
Did you by chance recently enable Google now?
Or do you have maps reporting/updating your location with GpS radio enabled?

Yes, I experienced something very similar, as did at least one other user in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1977476
My battery suddenly went from being awesome to draining about 1% every 5-10 minutes with no apparent cause, even while sleeping. I wiped and re-flashed, which did not seem to help, then tried an odin re-flash, with still questionable results immediately thereafter. The next day, it seemed to be spontaneously resolved - though, I'm not convinced my battery life is quite as good as some people are reporting.
Interestingly, better battery stats did not show any suspect activity.
I know that's not a solution, but you are definitely not alone. There is something weird going on here. That other user theorized it might be a calibration issue. Seems as plausible to me as anything else. If you are feeling patient, perhaps let it be for a day or two and see if it does indeed spontaneously resolve for you. That would be a helpful data point. If you can't bring yourself to do that, at least keep us updated on what you do and the results.

Huge battery drain

.Hello everyone,
Just got my G3 about 3 days ago, and so far the battery is going really bad for me.THis phone would consume the whole battery in just 6.5 hrs!!
I used to have Xiaomi Mi4 before it and it would easily make it the whole day -some times +18hr- on the same usage connections.
I've tried different roms and kernels, limited the CPU to 1.9GHz, set governor to powersave, set brightness to auto and then to 30% manual, and still all the same, nothing better! I don't play games or use huge apps, just facebook, whatsapp, 9chat, calls, and FaucClock.
On average, I lose +10% of the battery per hour, Is this normal for this device? The battery says it's 3000mAh but it's acting like it's 1450mAh!
UPDATE:
Yesterday I tried to drain the battery to 0% to charge it again by watching a Full HD movie. It consumed about 30% of the battery leaving me with 30%, that was on 02:48AM. Today I woke up at 9:00AM and there was 29% left, meaning it only consumed 1% in about 6hrs. using the phone would consume more than 5%/hr but the standby is getting really good and very stable. I'll be draining the battery and try to recharge it later hopefully it can get better than this.

Thanks for the reply. I really don't know how to read it, so I just attached some pics, I hope they're useful for you.
I have the same, if not worse, battery drainage. I got my phone(new) yesterday. Just 40 minute ago o was charging it and after i plugged out o saw immediately how the battery was draining more like a % per minute . I looked in the the battery section to see that it'll stay on for 3 hours and 40 minutes. Now i'm letting it play on YouTube till the battery is empty-empty , do a recharge and if that is not the case, maybe i just have a faulty battery and hopefully not a faulty phone. Although i looked at the apps that were used in stand-by(over night) and i sow that Google services was using 16% battery in stand-by , something that i never had like that. Yesterday when my phone arrived it had already pre installed Lollipop 5.0 . After connecting to wi-fi the software updated once more with a small file, something like 120-160 mb, i'm not sure exactly. Now it says that it has the latest update - 20h . I'l do a few full discharge/charge cycles and if that doesn't solve the issue it must be the battery or the phone. Either way i hope i'll not end up returning the phone for testing , the though is already infuriating me a little.

I just hope it's the first few days of the battery life and it would get better by time, but tbh this is the first time I see something like this!
I don't know if it helps but I had similar battery drain after I install a new update of Android. It happened after every update.
For me the solution was a full wipe.
After it I can reach ~2days with ~4hours SOT.

Use greenify messenger and whats up are causing all those wakelocks....
At the time i posted here(post #4) my battery was at around 60 percent playing YouTube for the first real drainage of battery science i've got my phone. Now it's at 12 % with 26 minutes estimated till complete drain. I mention i have the speaker on mute. If i had it on the drainage would've been a little faster. Anyway, after the drain i'll recharge the battery and let it overnight in stand by with the wi-fi on. Also the location will be enabled so the data connection even though it's somewhat deactivated by the wi-fi on status. I enabled also bluetooth and NFC although those are more dormant than active. It'll be setted just as i'm using it daily . Now it's 12:14 AM Eastern Europe time. I'll post here the finishing time of charging/letting it in stand by. In the morning (my morning time ) I'll post again the battery percent. I'll use the phone normally with a little bit of everything . Wi-fi will be on all the time, so the voice network and from time to time i'll "simulate" a carrier 4g/LTE data only usage(YouTube, FaceBook and Mail). I'll post againt the time when the battery will be depleted completely.
It's now 01:12 and the battery is empty. I'll charge it and talk to you in the morning.
Check the SD card. do you still have a battry drain if the sd card is in the Phone?
i had the same problem. i toke the sd card out and my Phone was normal again and no overheated Phone.
i formatted my card to NTFS and it worked.

I don't have an SD card.
You have stock firmware?? And try to install os monitor and it tells you witch program is using the most!
On stock rooted firmware
I also don't have an sd card, and of course i did a phone reset before recharging. I'm getting a little worried dough. Last night it finished charging after 1 hour and 50 minutes. I immediately started tu setup the phone with the google account , did a google restore . Also i forgot to tell that i'm on Orange Romania and i do have some bloatware but i disabled all of it just to make sure that those apps won't interfere with my test. Already my battery was at 85% before going to sleep. I mention that my google restore does not take to much time . When i woke up 10.45 AM my time( now is 11.23 AM) the battery was at 75 percent. I stayed a little on YouTube and just answered a 30 second call and it's down to 67 % now. I am getting aggravated. I'll call Orange support to tell the about the situation and i'll ask them if i can firstly try to fix my problem alone by rooting the phone. If they don't like the idea of rooting my phone i'll try a few more charges/discharges .
Install OS monitor!
I'll try it. Thanks! By the way now the time is 15:56 and the battery is at 66%. So it lost 2 percent in 4 and a half hours(stand-by).
Ps: now that i woke it up for writing this post, it's at 63%.

Are there any roms that would improve battery life?

I have the Sprint Galaxy s6, which is fine phone, except the battery is awful. If I unplug it from the charger at 6am, it's down to 12% by 1. Would a new rom help? I haven't rooted the phone yet, but if it'll improve the life of it I'll do it.
Just some input, I had an issue with the voicemail app the other day. After googling it, I found it was an issue on Samsung phones right now. You can look under battery setting to see if it's causing you issues. I'm rooted, so I disabled the app. But it killed my battery overnight, which has never happened to me before.
I use the Renegade rom. It says it patches some deep sleep issues, I'm not 100% sure what that means but it appears to help battery drain when the phone isn't in use. I also use the Unikernel kernel. I'd follow this guide to get rooted and install a recovery (this will trip knox, but if you're thinking about a custom rom you probably don't care). Backup your stock set up, then install the rom I named above (or any rom you like). Then use titanium backup to remove all the Samsung/Sprint bloat. I also use Greenify and apps that take advantage of the S6's AMOLED display (awsms, baconreader, etc.) Here's an AMOLED theme, too (use the Black Mod). I know that's a lot of time and work that shouldn't need done to get good battery, but if you want decent battery that should get it done. That's what I did and my battery is better than stock (usually lasts me all day with just short of 5 hour screen on time). Hope this was helpful!
Thanks for the advice. I've read that Android M is going to help with battery life, so I don't know if I should wait or not. (I probably won't)

in my experience the best thing that you can do to increase battery life is to remove bloat. That is why i use a heavily debloated ROM, and even with that I remove apps that I don't need.
Beyond that, I use Greenify and Wakelock Detector.
Except for heavy use, I typically can run my phone all day without needing a charge. That is all that I really need.
I've got a similar problem.
I factory reset recently, and just let my phone sit with nothing but Google Messenger and Facebook. It still dies from a full battery in ~4-5 hours, without me touching it. Thing is, all the battery stats show less than 5% usage. And there's no crazy crap like games, etc running. I can't figure out what's eating the battery.
I just put the phone in Airplane mode, and enabled Wifi. I'm getting all my emails, fb messages, gmail, google voice, so on. Battery only went down 30% in 28 hours. I turned off airplane mode (it's not connected to Sprint at the moment, I took it off the account), and I have an Airave...battery dropped 15% in about 30 minutes. Went back to airplane mode with Wifi on, and back to a really slow drain.
Right now, I'm planning on packing up my phone tomorrow and sending it to Samsung for a battery replacement. Because my standard 2A-5V can charge this phone from 10% to 100% in an hour...which isn't right.

Huge battery drain even in airplane mode (yes another battery thread!)

Apologies if this seems well travelled path, and I've certainly led a lot over the internet. But I just wanted to describe my issue and see if I've missed anything!
I've had chronic battery issues, and had a spare and I'd swap them in/out but I came to conclusion that wasn't great as it may not read battery stats well doing two different batteries. I was getting less than 12 hours between batteries. So now i have Powerbear 6500mAh battery and have been using it for a week. Apart from a heavy usage day I can now get 24 hours out of it. Superb.
Then as if by magic, trouble returns! The battery drained 11% overnight in seven hours. That's in airplane mode. 11% of a 6500mAh battery! Battery stats shows nothing has used battery in particular, just phone idle. Wake locks there was nothing significant. Now 5 hours later it's dropped another 43% with not a lot of use, just web and some maps.
Things I've tried:
Making sure the option to store activity logs is off.
Location turned off for all but most vital apps, like maps.
No automatic syncing of anything.
Greenify - and I shut down anything I can.
Wakelocks - ensuring nothing is abnormal, got rid of CityMaps due to excessive wakelocks.
Airplane mode at night - no cell, no wifi.
I rooted and reset the OS about six months ago, so that is my logical next step... but I'd rather understand what could cause 11% of 6500mAh to be drained by doing nothing!
Any thoughts of what I might have missed?
Stats: LG G4. LG-H815. Android 6.0. Build MRA58K. Software V20g-EUR-XX.
Thanks
Antony
What root method did you choose? SuperSU or Magisk? With Magisk my phone was hot (~70C) and got only 1.5h screen time, when i switched to SuperSU, it was gone.
Install GSam Battery Monitor app from the Play Store and see if it helps show you what's using up the battery.
I know you are not going to like reading this but
I don't use these extended batteries for a reason. Phone wasn't made for it.
Try your original battery
These extended batteries are also known to crap out after 500 charges
Use battery monitoring app to help you determine what's happening

I removed it as it never provided me anything worthwhile. I think it used to just say Android used the power or something vague. I can reinstall it, but there was never one specific identifiable reason I remember that.

Then I have to put up with a phone that won't last 6 hours, which is what led me to get additional batteries and now the PowerBear.
That said the following night, it used about 2% overnight... so erratic to say the least! And I have 59% left after 10 hours use. It's just the randomness the other day that spooked me. I did learn it was low on disk space, could have that caused that particularly bad event?
Did you try switching kernel? I can suggest you to try Imperium Kernel, that will reduce the system's usage. Other than this i have no idea. :\
